We could have let those corporations go bankrupt and simply tried to cope with the social consequences of their economic failure.

GM and Chrysler (two of the biggest employers in my part of the country) did go bankrupt. The only thing the bailout accomplished was to push their own pension debacle down the road a few years. We’ll be having this argument again in a decade.
