A “It could have got ugly when the cops showed up” story.
I was working at a nice gold refinery in a bad, bad neighborhood. I hear a helicopter in constant orbit over us. I go out to look and as I round a corner of our building I see several cops with guns pointed right at me. They tell me to approach them, as we are on opposite sides of a locked iron gate. I do as instructed and I have to then tell them about the gun I have on and that I work there. Right that second another guy who was in charge of the place comes strolling out wondering where I went…

Some smart and careful LAPD cops disarmed me without harm and asked me to open the gate. Except I did not have the key in my pocket. The other guy did. Whew! As it turns out a backhoe had cut our phone lines a few blocks away and triggered the red alert by our alarm company. The cops rolled up on a locked secure facility worried we had been taken over. Their professionalism kept me alive that day.

In the end we gave them a tour, and they eventually used our place to watch a crack house across Jefferson Bl. Which they eventually took down. A few months later the Rodney King riots broke out and that neighborhood had many, many fires.

You were really fucking lucky.

This poor bastard in Long Beach never had a chance. He was playing with a sprinkler nozzle last December and he was shot to pieces by two officers who were concealed in bushes nearby after they were called by a neighbor who thought the guy had a gun.

He had a damned sprinkler.

The Long Beach police spokesman admitted the two officers did not identify themselves or demand that he drop the object, and it seems the guy had no idea that the police were even there at all. They opened fire with a shotgun and a semi auto pistol.
