Yes, it did. But at the same time, the Musket Wars also allowed them to develop the tactics and defense that let them take on the British with some chance of success. A high price to pay, to be sure, but that payment did let the Maori survive as a people and culture. Many aboriginal peoples in nearby Australia, by contrast, were not able to adapt (in some cases simply because they didn’t have access to firearms) and were ultimately destroyed.
