re: #953 Kenneth

What is the UN waiting for? Deploy a strong force to Gaza
by Maj. Gen. Lewis Mackenzie, from Tuesday’s Globe and Mail

McKenzie is no fool, and he makes a good argument for a UN force, but there are two problems with the idea. The first problem is that if one agrees to start negotiating with the UN to provide a force with aggressive ROE, by the time the force is deployed caveats from contributing member states will undermine the original idea. The UN force will be reduced to monitoring the borders but forbidden to act. The second problem is the question of who exactly will form the force? US troops? European? Arab states? US troops will be views as allies of the Zionist enemies. Europeans
will be hobbled by caveats and have “mixed” loyalties. Arab states will simply help Hamas.

A UN force is not a realistic or viable solution in Gaza, no matter how well it worked in Cyprus. In fact, UN peacekeeping missions have only ever worked when both side genuinely want peace, but need help learning to trust each other. That necessary precondition does not exist in Gaza.

Israel should allow a UN force inside Gaza AFTER they have destroyed Hamas and AFTER Israel has annexed the Gaza-Egyptian border.
The UN’s job would be to administer international aid ie do nothing other than to .
