The Great Wall of China has a very long history, but those who built it did so for near term purposes.

The Hoover Dam could last for a very long time, but it very quickly returned value on its investment.

Humans do engage in long term projects, but again, these projects have near term positive feedback.

Pharaohs and Emperors engaged in their funerary and final resting places decades before they were needed, but with a definite personal goal, and the constructions were also national work projects.

Climate change mitigation is about benefitting people long after we’re dead. That’s a hard sell.
