I cooked a pork meat loaf tonight that had a layer of almost-opaque white bubbling on the top—I thought it was gonna’ grow an arm and reach out to grab me. Never in my life have I baked anything that scared me.

I’ve bred some interesting stuff in the refigerator—like the left-over 1995 Thanksgiving turkey I found in late February that had a pink fuzz on it and appeared to be breathing. And, I’ll never forget the 1999 black-eyed-pea-and-tuna salad—it produced such interesting colors and shapes of mold that I shot a whole roll of film.

But, this creation bubbled and burbled. I actually leapt into the air sideways when I got it to the sink so that I could hit the disposer’s switch at the same time I dumped it down the drain.

What did humanity do before the garbage disposer?

That sounds nasty!

I wish I could have saved you some of the lamb tagine that I made for supper. But the pot was scraped clean.
