Winter Solstice: the rational reason for the season?

I dunno. I’m thinking that ‘holidays are great and good excuses (regardless of what their original purpose was or is to other people) to get together with other people to eat and generally try to be merry and happy because life without any sort of celebration would be exceptionally dull’, is a quite reasonable reason.
