How CBS Blew It
The journalism enthusiasts at the Washington Post have a reasonably competent account of CBS News’s disastrous, politically motivated rush to get the forged Killian memos on the air despite warnings from their experts: In Rush to Air, CBS Quashed Memo Worries. (The Post has obviously decided that the blogosphere’s contribution to the story was minimal; there’s quite a bit of mainstream media self-congratulation here, but none of the blogs that really broke the story are credited.)
I especially enjoyed this paragraph:
These software experts say differences in font widths and printing styles make it impossible to replicate the CBS documents using the printing technology available in the early 1970s. By contrast, reasonably competent computer enthusiasts have created nearly exact replicas of the documents in 15 minutes employing default settings for Microsoft Word and the widely used Times New Roman font.
