Tech Note: Back to JQuery 1.2.6

Science • Views: 1,877

We’ve had too many reports of problems with AOL browsers, Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox versions earlier than 3, etc., so we’ve reached the reluctant conclusion that we must revert back to jQuery 1.2.6. We haven’t been able to duplicate most of the reported problems, but our development systems are pretty fast high-end machines with lots of RAM—which suggests that the problem may be a matter of “downward scaling” to less capable machines and browsers. The release notes for jQuery 1.3 say it has completely eliminated browser sniffing, and this could also be the source of lingering issues.

Dutch canals freeze for first time in 12 years.

Global warming and pollution to blame?

In the 19th century, when Hans Brinker, the hero of the novel in which he tries to win a pair of silver skates, coasted along Holland's ice, the canals froze almost every year. But water pollution and climate change have made this so rare that today a boy of 15, Brinker's age, may never have seen a frozen canal, or at least remember one. Until, that is, this year.

I think climate change is having a comeback - in the form of cold weather. /where are my insulated undies?

Obama Inaugural Strains Lincoln Comparisons While Inviting Them

In ways big and small, Obama is trying to summon Abraham Lincoln’s spirit to the proceedings.

Obama will roll into Washington’s Union Station today by train, duplicating part of Lincoln’s railroad journey from Illinois for his swearing in. The president-elect is to appear at a concert tomorrow at the Lincoln Memorial, and will take the oath of office Tuesday with one hand on the Bible that Lincoln used in 1861. Inaugural planners drew so many ties between the Illinois legislators-turned-presidents that Obama may risk straining the comparison.

“Everyone wants to be Lincoln,” says Harold Holzer, who has written or edited more than 20 books on Lincoln and the Civil War. “Is Obama overdoing it? Maybe.”

What about the hat?

/Obama is a total Lincoln fraud unless he wears a Lincoln hat

Charles - one suggestion is that you might establish a "longer path" test set up to simulate the delay inherent in internet transactions. Use a distant proxy server >14 hops out to simulate coming in through www. I say this because my machine is pretty upper end, and I experienced some of the issues

Global warming and pollution to blame?

The article says:

But water pollution and climate change have made this so rare that today a boy of 15, Brinker's age, may never have seen a frozen canal, or at least remember one.

Pollution would raise the freezing point of the canal water. So the frozen canals seem to suggest that 1) well, it's cold, and/or 2) the water is cleaner.

Both of which are hard to reconcile with the "global warming is accelerating out of control!" and "we're killing the planet!" memes.

Charles! What is it with javascript? It is such a pain in the ass.. Often apps will only run with a certain version of JS..such as shipping with company X on their website and other apps require up/down versions of javascript..
I can't believe that if you are running the lastest, greatest version it is not compatible with an earlier version.. This weekend we are upgrading to Oracle R12 from 11i. And I'm getting errors on workstations that they need to downgrade their version of Javascript..So now I have to push a version over the network to 3000 workstations.. I have Dealt with Sun for years.. And they continue to disappoint me.. They could have run the PC world with vision and a good code base.. And Oracle should have forced this issue since their code depends on JS libraries..
Java libraries are a joke.. I could make a sweeter program in VB5 10 years ago than Java. I think Sun dropped the Ball...

Maybe someday you should just dev for FireFox and Safari and let the others die. You are playing a game of "whack-a-mole" and having to compromise across browsers.

NOTHING good EVER came from AOL, very screwed up and non-standard and really didn't serve any purpose, and I've been in the biz since the 70's (technically, I suppose, the 1960's).

BBC pushes their antisemitic agenda by using self-hating Jews:

Fault-line between Jews over Gaza

Some of the strongest language elsewhere has come from British Jews, notably Gerald Kaufman - a leading figure in the Labour Party.
He accused Israel of exploiting the guilt felt by non-Jews in order to continue its offensive in Gaza.
Sir Gerald, who has been a stern critic of Israel in recent years, said: "The present Israeli government ruthless and cynically exploits the continuing guilt from Gentiles over the slaughter of Jews in the Holocaust as justification for their murder of Palestinians...."

...."Jews such as Gerald Kaufman feel that because of their Jewish identity they have the right to berate Israel and her supporters with this comparison without any concern for the truth.
"It is quite simply inexcusable..."

Which won't exactly stop the BBC from using these capos in order to libel other Jews....

Javascript is the language built into browsers, to let developers manipulate page elements dynamically. On January 20th, I will, for the first time in years, fly an American flag from my front porch in the standard upside up position. I have been intermittenly, in reaction to one or another particlularly egregious event, flying Old Glory upside down for the last eight years.

My neighbor across the street hates it when I do that. He's a Vietnam Veteran and a Republican and flies his flags rightside up on all the appropriate dates. Oddly enough we have remained on friendly terms for the last fifteen years.

Hello All.

We need to find the silver lining in this long hard struggle ahead of us--whether we are here in the USA or in Israel or elsewhere.

We cannot spend the next several years like deranged unhinged idiots waiting for a "savior" like many around us spent 8 years of their lives blaming one man for their real & imaginary problems.

Scharansky and countless other successful escapees of totalitarian socialist utopias must inspire us to never never give up, nor lose our heads while others around us drink the Koolaid, give up their lives, children and property to these truly "illiberal" control freaks--or to their islamic jihadist mirror image.

I love you guys & want us to support each other & stay strong & positive for the fight ahead. Be like the USAir pilot Capt. Sully Sullenberger--above all let's not lose our heads.

There's gonna be another election in 2012, we agree there. It is way too early to make predictions on the outcome. In fact, 2010 may turn out to be very intersting. We'll see.

I hope Obama loses but not at the expense of the American Way of life.
I pray for somebody better in the Republican party not necessarily for Obama to really lay an egg
If Obama is a dismal failure on all counts, America loses.

I just don't see a single Republican out there who can carry the traditions of Reagan. They are all RINOS, wimps or wackos.

Can we talk Steve Largent out of retirement?

UN Chief calls for timetable for Israeli withdrawal from Gaza
Published: 01.17.09, 20:19 / Israel News
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Saturday if Israel declared a unilateral ceasefire in Gaza, it should also be accompanied by a timetable for Israeli withdrawal," from the Hamas-ruled Strip.

At the same press conference, held in Beirut after meetings in Lebanon, he also condemned an air strike on a UN school in Gaza. (Reuters)

So a unilateral ceasefire ain't good enough for this useless little piece of shit. Without making mention of Hamas's vow to fight on no matter what, this putz who's best parts dripped down his father's leg, wants the Israeli's to also agree to a time table?

It's way early to be worried about who the opposition candidate will be, but I do see possibilites.
1. I warmed up to Mitt Romney last time too late. Depending how events unfold over the next 4 years, he could emerge in a strong position.
2. Sarah P. has work to do, but she may also emerge in a strong position.
3. Also, the Governor of S. Carolina (Stanton?) seems impressive.

There are others, too, but that's a short list to give 'hope' for 'change'

PS, pray & stay vocal about brave Zimbabwean Mr. Morgan Tvansgirai, travelling back to Zimbabwe for the first time since the fake election Mugabe stole from Tvansgirai last November or earlier. May Mugabe die of a heart attack soon and let Zimbabwe LIVE again.

I have even looked in the Israeli papers online...Googled his name...no really new news. It does not sound good, but prayers can always help.

Hope y'all have a great time!

Beer, like minded friends, what's not to enjoy ? BTW, after a few weeks on LGF, I'm better equipped to debate my far left friends. I'm as sick of their knuckle dragging right BS comments, as I am of the Commie left crap from a few on h right.

Its the one big city in the South-East, Cardiff, Capital of Wales.

No tiles have come off the roof yet ...

We have winds like that here in Lexington. I've lost shingles and siding just from the wind. We had a big hail storm couple of summers ago, 35,000 houses had to get new roofs (including mine)
Wales has long held a fascination to me.

Patriotism is in again. It was "racist" somehow to expect a man running for President to wear a flag pin.

Now, he just can't get enough of the good old red, white and blue. His dog and pony show of an inauguration is pretty sickening.

These idiots who were so anti-American during the past 8 years have suddenly seen the light. Gag me!

Is it possible for Olmert to get anything of importance right?

Any cease fire had better start with the sight of Gilad Shalit being escorted safely back across the border. And continue with further painful-for-Hamas concessions from there. Or else it will be a fubar.

Haven't been dancing in a LONG time. Used to all the time. Glad to hear you have DD.
My two best friends from grade school and I get together every year to hang out and have some fun. This year we went to Cincy to see Billy Joe Royal at this 'nightclub'. We had the front and center table and had a good view of the local dancers. Must say, after many drinks we were dissing the dancers. Laughed so much my face hurt. We all agreed later that we wished we had taken video of this one pair and posted on youtube. They weren't dancing for the joy of dancing but for the audience and they were way too funny.
So just remember while you are dancing, others are watching. LOL!

Have fun and dance for the pure enjoyment of dancing.

* * * *

Impressive Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina. Republican who dislikes pork, pork barrel & bailouts. Went to his statehouse with two piglets to illustrate that fact.

Maybe it's just me -- but is anybody else irritated by the way Obama whistles through his "s" letters when he speaks?

It's called "sibilance"--it's a dental thing, you wouldn't understand. I imagine you also made fun of President Bush's verbal issues? Niiiiiiiice. NOT.

Who peed in your cheerios, pal? I just said I was "irritated".

He whistles while he tells us of his plan to foist trillions in new spending upon us. "Irritating," to say the least.

Oh, and I understand far more than you think, friend.

It's called "hauteur" -- it's a superciliousness thing.

You wouldn't understand.

Once you have a mindset, you look for issues like picking on GW for the way he says nuclear, or Obama's dental issues. There are bigger issues to deal with IMHO.

Here's an odd tech note. When I go to a user's Recent Comments, those that have been posted in an "Overnight Open Thread" are lumped together, even though they come from several different nights' open threads. Not a problem, just odd.

2 of my 4 kids had already been born.

The symptoms for me was th CPU hitting 100% every couple of seconds with Firefox 2.0.0.20 (The last one) and really locking up. Also, it would take forever to close tabs on threads with lots of posts (Sometimes generating the Stalled script error), but that was a problem before the newer jQuery.

So I went to FireFox 3 just now to find that the jQuery has been stepped back. And now the processor is loafing along at 10-40%

I noticed IE7 runs LGF with around a 50 mb footprint. Last night, I noticed it blew up to 130 mb with excessive cpu cycles. Switched to IE 64 bit and LGF was very responsive with around a 60 mb footprint.
