47 | karmic_inquisitor Thu, Jan 22, 2009 11:37:55am |
BTW - BlackBerry is not easy to hack.
All of the com going to and from is going over a 3DES pipe. Even straight TCP connections get encrypted using 3DES. That is just the off the shelf variety. Then you have to catch and assemble the signal packets if you are trying to intercept what is going over the airwaves. Steven den Beste could better explain, but all of the BB carriers are on digital networks that spread a signal over multiple frequencies. Add whatever extra encryption the Secret Service has added along with a dynamic key and you have a big hacking challenge.
The big concern most IT depts have with BBs is when they get lost or stolen - can someone get the data off of them and (even worse) use the device to hack a VPN / network? The device that GD made has features to protect against that which I won’t post.

Obama will be giving new meaning to Executive Privilege before long.
As an FWIW, Sarbanes Oxley has already gotten RIM to put in “logging” features in the BES servers (the servers that BlackBerry communicates through) that pretty much captures everything on the device. So if Obama writes in the memo application “Get Bill Ayers a grant” it will be in the records. Even his brickbreaker score can be captured.
The real thing to ask is if his aids will turn on those features. Given that they didn’t turn on the security features for credit card donations to his site, there is a track record of “selective oversights” that Obama’s IT gurus are capable of.

Yahh. Oh-pium now has a Crackberry. Its all going according to our master plan. For those that are un-aware on the real story here, RIM has made a number of big time at-home investments in softwood lumber, and quite a other Canuck commodities and goods and services.
The truth is, my American Lizards, is that now that O has his Crackberry, we in Canuckistan are privy to his every secret - because we control the Crackberry servers. Now if Opie decides to mess with NAFTA or piss us off on any other matter of concern to us here in Canuckistan, well — what can I say. We’ll be looking in at all times - and we can pull zee plug on a moments notice.
Opie, you’re on notice.

OT: The irony of defending Geert Wilders….
Today The International Free Press Society (no link - it’s a Spencer/Diana West venture) issued a statement defending Geert.
The International Free Press Society believes this court-ordered prosecution against Geert Wilders, a central figure in the fight against the Islamization of the West, amounts to a dangerous concession to the strictures of Islamic law, which prohibits all criticism of Islam, over Western traditions of, and rights to robust and unfettered debate. As such, it is tantamount to a surrender to totalitarian influences that undermine all Western freedoms. And as such, it must be resisted.
Not a hint of irony that Geert wanted to make possession of a book a crime.

This letter was sent by Wal*Mart’s Head Office to a customer in Peoria:
Dear Mrs. Murray,
While we thank you for your valued custom, the manager of our store in Peoria is considering banning you and your family from shopping with us, unless your husband stops his antics. Below is a list of offences over the past few months, all verified by our surveillance cameras:
1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in people’s carts when they weren’t looking.
2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.
3. July 7: Made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to feminine products aisle.
4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official tone, ‘Code 3’ in housewares….. and watched what happened.
5. August 14: Moved a ‘CAUTION - WET FLOOR’ sign to a carpeted area.
6. September 15: Set up a tent in the outdoor clothing department and told shoppers he’d invite them in if they would bring sausages and a Calor gas stove.
7. September 23: When the deputy manager asked if she could help him, he began to cry and asked, ‘Why can’t you people just leave me alone?’
8. October 4: Looked right into the security camera; used it as a mirror, picked his nose, and ate it.
9. November 10: While appearing to be choosing kitchen knives in the Housewares aisle asked an assistant if he knew where the antidepressants were.
10. December 3: Darted around the store suspiciously, loudly humming the Mission Impossible’ theme.
11. December 6: In the kitchenware aisle, practised the ‘Madonna look’ using different size funnels.
12. December 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed, yelled ‘PICK ME!’ ‘PICK ME!’
13. December 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, assumed the foetal position and screamed ‘NO! NO! It’s those voices again.’
And; last, but not least:
14. December 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited a while; then yelled, very loudly, ‘There is no toilet paper in here.’

One of the offices I deal with had reported they were having problems with a printer taking forever to print. At first they though it was just taking forever to warm up, but they went thru all the diagnostics and the printer was working perfectly. So then they started looking at the print queues and everything looked fine. Then someone checked the logs, uh-oh.
Turns out that for 2+ years, the printer was set to forward all documents sent to it to an IP address in Russia, then it would receive the documents back from that same address to print locally. Turns out the printer was working fine all along, the delay was coming from the traffic having to go thru Russia first.

George Mitchell is half Lebanese, he is related to the problem, not disinterested. He did kick the can down the road once before but now things are much more serious. His buy them off approach in Ireland was not a disaster but there is no reason to empower Hamas that way. The IRA want at there maximal deman level to get the English out of Ulster, even if the majority in Ulster disagree. They do not want to get the English out of England. This is a minor niggle, but it depends on the network. If he’s on Sprint or Verizon, the communications with the cell towers are in fact spread spectrum, so it’s pretty hard to get the individual packets. If he’s on AT&T or T-Mobile, it depends - on their 3G networks, he will be spread spectrum, but on their 2 and 2.5G networks, it will not be. Regardless, it’s still hard to hack - it’s just a question of whether it’s hard or even harder.

Dear President Obama:
Please this is important and very urgent I have an urgent transaction of $1.2 billion USD used to transfer to your nominated account. I am a soon to be Treasury Official, who after going through some old files in the records, I discovered that if I do not remit this money out urgently it will be forfeited for nothing. The owner of this account unfortunately died in a plane crash.
No other person knows about this account or any thing concerning it, the account has no other beneficiary and my investigation proved to me as well that his company does not know anything about this account and the amount involved is $1.2 billion United States Dollars.
I want to transfer the $1.2 billion United States Dollars into a safe and trustworthy lockbox account, I am only contacting you because this money can not be approved to a local bank here, but can only be approved to certain banks within your circle of friends because the money is in US dollars and the former owner of the account is a foreigner too I know that this message will come to you as a surprise as we don’t know our selves before, but be rest assure that this is life time business for both of us even for our generation to come,
With believe in the Almighty that you will never let me down in this business. You are the only person that I have contacted in this business, so please reply urgently so that I will inform you the next step to take urgently. I need your full co-operation to make this work fine because the management is ready to approve this payment.
The transaction, although discrete, is legitimate and the money will be transferred successfully with all necessary back-up official documents showing legitimate source/origin of fund. The transfer will be affected within a period noting than two weeks as soon as we reach an agreement and you furnish me with a suitable response indicating your interest for processing the transfer. I plead with you on one issue, whether you are interested or not, kindly do not expose this information to any one else. I confirm that the transaction is legitimate and without any risks either to me or yourself. Please, give me your response immediately
With Regards,
Mr. Tim Geithner

Its not like you need a Blackberry to speak to someone off the record.
If he wants a private conversation with someone, he can just call them to his office…
Or just talk to them on the “batphone”.

re: #196 Ariel
This is a minor niggle, but it depends on the network. If he’s on Sprint or Verizon, the communications with the cell towers are in fact spread spectrum, so it’s pretty hard to get the individual packets. If he’s on AT&T or T-Mobile, it depends - on their 3G networks, he will be spread spectrum, but on their 2 and 2.5G networks, it will not be. Regardless, it’s still hard to hack - it’s just a question of whether it’s hard or even harder.
The operative word is HARD, not IMPOSSIBLE. And hacking the POTUS communications would be the crown jewel of hackerdom so a lot more effort will be expended now that the locus has been revealed.

Special envoy for middle east peace is George Mitchell.
Didn’t the Mitchell report in 2001 partially blame the 2nd intifada on Israel?
It said although Ariel Sharon’s visit to the Temple Mount wasn’t responsible for the Intifada it was and unwise thing to do. And went on with yada yada yada about 2 states etc, but never addressed the fact that the Palestinians were lead by terrorists and had no desire for peace.

Okay, I dunno just how qualified he is — but, what message is his appointment really saying? He is, after all, 75 years old. Is this Opie and Her Majesty’s best effort? How can he possibly be a long-term appointment to this important post?
Or … is this a post no one wanted - a career killer? Or is the Dem bench so thin that this is all they’ve got?

Sure the photo went around the world as a Palestinian man being attacked by a rabid Israeli cop!
And that photo started the intifada.
The fact that the cop was trying to ward off an entire mob of Muslims who had already stabbed and beaten this Jewish-American man in the photo (along with his Jewish companion) was beside the point.
So, you see, it sort of WAS Israel’s fault!

re: #47 karmic_inquisitor
Even so, there are thousands of Chinese on it even as we speak.
Their intelligence has the time, manpower, and resources.

He already has access to NSA, MIL, State, and all the secure networks we have. Everyone on his access list can be provided a secure unit on those nets. Using a crackberry as you suggest would link the commercial Blackberry net to our secure nets.
It’s a security hole the size of the Lincoln Memorial because Barack wants one. That’s the problem, He wants it, screw all other considerations.

So far he has whined about not having any “privacy” and about not being able to keep his blackberry. So, now, regardless of what security says he is going to get his way.
All he is doing is creating more security headaches for the people who protect him.
Funny how he thinks that he should be given everything that HE wants but he has also revoked an executive order that protects health care people who do not want to provide medical treatments that they morally oppose. Yes, that will bring back American morality! He can force his view of morality on others but he does not have to follow rules himself.

I’m gonna talk about something very practical and technical about our new President’s Blackberry. It has nothing to do with intercepting communications but is probably much more threatening.
It’s obvious once you think about it. Nearly every wireless communication device operates on radio frequencies (the exceptions are the ones that operate using infrared, which does not apply here). Every wireless communication device will send on one frequency and receive on another.
As a general rule, a wireless communication device will continuously send a pulse to a receiver to maintain contact.
When I was in the Army, we could track and locate almost any cell phone in the local area. In fact, we did this to track down terrorists during Operation Desert Storm. And this was almost 20 years ago. If I understand it correctly, the old TRQ-32 (affectionately called the turkey 32) has either been upgraded or been replaced by better equipment.
So, all I need to do is get a receiver near the President and figure out what frequency is Blackberry is using. Then, using radio direction finding equipment, I can figure out his exact location (back in the day, we could figure out an antenna’s within 10 meters). Then, I can send some sort of mortar or artillery shell his way.
I could care less about intercepting the President’s communications. I can imagine that if it was something really important, it won’t be sent via e-mail. However, if I were the Secret Service, I would be worried that while that Blackberry is with the President, anyone can track his exact location.
Yeah, that’s a smart move, Mr. President.

Can the blackberry have the MIC turned on remotely like the Motorola phones can?
kinda scary considering the kind of conversations that must happen in the presidents presence.

What’s the nation’s security matter when little Barry wants his toy?
Unbelievable.

As I pointed out in my post, secrets are not a real concern. I imagine (or hope) that the NSA will provide an encryption for the Blackberry. People in the White House use cellphones all the time and they’re encrypted. It would not be difficult to encrypt the signal and then encrypt any messages being sent by the Blackberry.
You’d be surprised but the encryption used for internet financial transactions is really high. If there is any breaking of the encryption, it’s usually because the computer itself has poor security, not the messages being sent (a person sends his credit card # over the internet via a secure system but stores the number on his computer in plain text).
As I mentioned above, my concern would not be the encryption, but the direction finding. Worst case scenario is that he goes into a combat zone with his precious Blackberry and a smart combatant buys some RDF equipment and tracks his every move. Then, when the time is right, attacks via a remote controlled aircraft. Such an attack will probably not kill or even hurt the President, but may hurt others who are protecting him.
In my opinion, that’s the most significant problem with the Blackberry.

No, I heard he is closing the WHite House bowling alley and installing a basketbal court. Seriously, Magic Johnson said he wanted an invite to play 1 on 1.

I have Blackberry — can I be President?

My guess is he’s not going to be messaging directly off his phone.
They’ll have a daisy chain to secret service decoys who will then send the messages. Nobody will have a direct connect to Obama’s BB under that system, they would just have a contact number that could be routed the way it would if you called the oval office.
At least, well… that is what I pray is going on.

Is anyone really surprised that Obama isn’t concerned with matters of national security?

I am told the Pentagon was very careful with what it shared with the Clintons. I cannot imagine what must be going thru their minds just now.

re: #47 karmic_inquisitor
Wasn’t there something a while back, like a few years ago when there was a huge problem with all the blackberries, and they all went down. And about that time it was revealed that all their servers were in Canada, and that all the communication data from all of them was routed back through Canada and backed up there?
Seems to me there was something odd like that in the news.
I have a feeling that eventually this will come back to bite him in the arse.
I just read somewhere that Bush stopped using email the day he stepped in to the WH, as he knew that would be a weak link and those servers could be subpoenaed.
Then there was Palin’s email and the private v official communication.

Our new “tech savvy” president doesn’t even post press briefings on whitehouse.gov?
[Link: www.whitehouse.gov…]
GWB had a full transcript, MP3 audio, and a video up within hours of a briefing.
The Chosen One has zero available for today’s briefing, unless I’m just unable to locate it…

Just a year ago the Left were demanding answers regarding Cheney’s use of an RNC email account to keep VP records secret.
But when a Democrat POTUS gets to keep his private Blackberry account open and used, not a peep from them regarding the legal issues of maintianing records and “secret convesations.”
Hypocrits.

re: #307 William
That’s because his briefings are only available telepathically to true believers in The One. So unless you REPENT and cease your heathen evil conservative ways and praise Lord Obama (Peace Be Unto Him), you will never get those transcripts.
And worry not about hackers hacking in The One’s Blackberry, as anyone trying to hack into it will be struck by lightning and cast among the minions of HELL! Obama be praised!
