BTW, Charles--you might want to look at something in the coding of Pajamas Media.
For not the first time, after I have viewed a PJ Media video, I find that other vids, such as those on YouTube, either do not work at all or run without sound. It's necessary to clear cookies and restart to get things to work properly again.
Ibook G4, OS 10.4.11, Safari 3.2.1 here.
I have had the same problem.
Windows XP, and it happens with Firefox, safari and chrome.

India Failing to Control Open Defecation Blunts Nation’s Growth
Until May 2007, Meera Devi rose before dawn each day and walked a half mile to a vegetable patch outside the village of Kachpura to find a secluded place.
Dodging leering men and stick-wielding farmers and avoiding spots that her neighbors had soiled, the mother of three pulled up her sari and defecated with the Taj Mahal in plain view.
With that act, she added to the estimated 100,000 tons of human excrement that Indians leave each day in fields of potatoes, carrots and spinach, on banks that line rivers used for drinking and bathing and along roads jammed with scooters, trucks and pedestrians. Devi looks back on her routine with pain and embarrassment.
. . .
Devi, who installed her neighborhood’s first toilet, a squat-style latrine in a whitewashed outhouse, created a point of pride in a village where some people empty chamber pots into open drains in front of their homes. Like most of Kachpura’s residents, more than half of India’s 203 million households lack what Western societies consider a necessity: a toilet.

I would like to apologize for what I am going to tell SpaceJesus the next time he insults a lizard. I know that this is not the suitable conduct, decorum, manners, spelling or even grammer expected of honored lizards. I know that, in the future, I will, in a fit of blind rage, be unable to stop my fingers from typing a blazing line of smoking insults and slurs unbecoming my station. Can you forgive me?
You are good people..I caught spacejesus in the lounge..I said some things..He ran off like a little wuzz..
I think we can all disagree to disagree on politics or life in general..But to insult some fine lizards pisses me off...Of all the thousands of lizards I have met here..only a few have pissed the hoopster off...Not because they insulted me..Hell I've been trashed talked to the point of tears..
No because they unfairly said hateful words to fellow lizards...And I know..hurt their feelings...I don't like that..at all..And because this is Charles's Blog I will never embarress his site...Charles totally rocks..
I just ask to go off-line to express my fury..
Spacejesus..Just say you are sorry..humble yourself and play nice with the lizards...Just because you slip on the rock sometimes doesn't mean you can't make it to the top.

I think about some custom knife-makers, for example, who make excellent products, but at some point you start to pay for the beauty and the name, not the literal, functional quality.
And I think about people who modify their cars with crappy, ostensibly aerodynamic plastic cowls and wings and whatnot. Or wheels with enormous diameters. I always want to shake them and say, "If it really improved the car's performance, don't you think the engineers at Ford would have discovered so themselves?"

Have you checked into having a bidet installed in your existing bathroom? Aren't there combo toilet bidets available?
I live in an apartment. Five hundred sq feet. The bathroom barely has room for, well, Tidy Wipes.... Ta da, which bring the subject around full circle. (It's like an episode of LOST)

The nice thing is where I live. It's not totally rural, but Golden Colorado is tucked into the base of the Rocky Mountain foothills. If I look north, west or south, I see mountains. And the place has a small town feel.
It use to be the state capitol of the Colorado Territories.
If I had the same sort of place in the mountains, it would be 1500 or so, and the utilities and gasoline and food prices are much higher "up the hill."
And, I'm only two miles from the theatre where I work.

DAYM...I pay $1100 for a three bedroom townhouse with a backyard and a two car garage. The living space is 2000 SF.
Good grief!
Reading these rents here . . .
Makes me glad I have my house, small as it is.
1600 sf, but it sits on two lots on a corner - my note is about $570 a month.
Bought the house in 1987.

Good evening, all...
So, as you all know, I am a bit of a history buff...
I knew my great-great-great grandfather (of whom I have a pic in his Civil War uniform) died during the war in a POW camp (he was from NY and held in the South). That and his name (not very common at all -- Barzilla, which I "remembered" as a kid as being "Briscilla)) was about all I knew...
I searched the internet for my mother's lineage and found some hints. In one evening, I was able to identify his unit. I knew he had died in the South but had no idea where nor where with what company. I sent off for his military records ($3.00) and was sent a couple of photocopies of his record -- they indicated that he died in New Orleans "of disease." (The story I heard from the family was that he had died of dysentary).
So, once I knew his date of death and where, I searched, after e-mailing, found his grave in Chalmette National Cemetary in New Orleans. I'm going to submit a paper to a conference down there next semester and go pay my respects...

reine, 1600 sqft is not small.
Well, my neighborhood - it has very large lots. Mine is almost 1/2 acre, and it's one of the smallest lots. It's an old neighborhood, but right in the middle of town.
The lady across the street has 3 acres and a very small house. Lots of folks are buying up the small houses on the larger lots, tearing down the houses, and building 4000 - 5000 sf homes.
So when I look around me - we're small - but I'm very happy.

Yes, I have occasionally tried for years to find his grave. I forgot to mention -- I knew his last name as well. My mother and her only sister were estranged before my my mother died, so I really didn't have an opportunity to ask the family about the details.
I am really psyched about being able to visit his grave and say a prayer for him...

re: #345 reine.de.tout
I sent for a book through inter-library loan that had the names of the dead from Andersonville and it wasn't there. I bought a book or two about Civil War POW camps but had no luck (none really had cemetary rolls). Was a bit discouraged -- again, I had no idea what unit he was even in. The Web allowed me to search for his name and I found it relatively quickly, and it was a short haul (plus a few weeks waiting for NY Archives to send his military record so I knew where he died) to find him.
Again, I'm really psyched! It still amazes me to look at his picture, and know where he is buried, after he died in 1864.
