It's amazing how 5 billion years of evolution and innumerably vast chemical reactions have, at best, produced a species capable of slowly killing itself off (if their penchant for spontaneous violence, or the universe's penchant for grandiose cosmic energy phenomena doesn't do it for them at any given point) and then depending on some supernatural extraordinary power to save them.
Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, just like "Together in Electric Dreams" by Phil Oakley!

Thanks for that. I've loved Harryhausen's work since I was a kid, and it never gets old. There's something compelling about it, even in today's era of hyper-realistic effects. And the skeleton fight is one of my favorites.
According to his Wikipedia entry, Harryhausen is still alive and involved in new projects.
Tim Burton is also a huge fan. In The Corpse Bride, a long panning shot of one of the character playing a grand piano slowly zooms into his hands, and as the camera travels along in close up, the piano maker's logo is clearly visible for a moment. And it's a "Harryhausen".

Click the chain-looking thing and enter your URL; then replace the highlighted "Enter your text here" section in the resulting tag.
Could be a problem with the URL; if it contains anything that looks like a phone number, for example, Charles' filters will chop it out and it won't work. If this is the case, try using TinyURL.

The American was involved in a new USAID program aimed at helping the U.S. government "implement activities in support of the rule of law and human rights, political competition, and consensus building, and to strengthen civil society in support of just and democratic governance in Cuba," Boomgard said.

The citizen was detained on Dec. 5 while distributing cell phones, laptop computers and other communications equipment to Cuban citizens.
Under Raul Castro’s regime, the Cuban people are supposedly allowed to own the communications devices.
“This is clear evidence the Cuban regime continues to stifle dissent and oppress the basic human rights of its people," LeMieux said. "Unfortunately, the dictatorial regime of Raul Castro is choosing to harass and detain American citizens while also limiting the Cuban people’s access to digital technology."

"Now more than ever, we need to maintain critical democracy funding in the midst of this crackdown by the Cuban regime," he said. Stenake Johansson, chairman of the Residential Association on Faglaro island, told the Associated Press on Saturday that Elin Nordegren became the owner on Dec. 1.

Nordegren's property is among the biggest on the island. Johansson said negotiations most likely started shortly after the house was put on the market in August — well before Woods' car crash last month at his Florida home touched off the scandal.

Anyone who held a good thought for her, I humbly thank you.
My other friend got a surgical date in January. She quickly got tired of the waiting and asked the surgeon if she could reschedule earlier. Now she's set for Nov 16

My vote for best quote from your link:
If a kid picks up a candy bar and runs, you give him a warning before you cuff him. Same with those mindless teenyboppers who go to the Hickory Farms store, and then take double samples of fruitcake and cheeselog, you warn them that they will be charged with a felony(grand theft), and that if they attempt to fight and run, they will be, unfortunately, first tazered, and if they continue to resist violently with intent to maim, then wounded. Fortunately, wounding fire to suppress teenage kleptomaniacs is relatively easy, they all run in straight lines, and a hit in the knee will be relatively simple from the second floor.

Ya know the really fun part is when one of those guys (often several in their own squad) come out to IDPA of IPSC to compete with well trained civilians and cops. The first thing they get told is no combat clothes.
Anyone want to guess how ell these guys do under time clock and movement pressure? Keystone cops comes to mind.

exaaactly. go read the whole thing, but put your beverage down first.
As I was reading I found myself involuntarily adjusting my green body armor and fidgeting with my helmet chin strap.
Very disturbing.

A buddy of mine sent this a few days ago for yesterday's Army-Navy game. Good to see the streak continue ;)
The game takes on new meaning now with my son in Army ROTC. Go Navy!

Mall cops and security...
When I was in college, I was an office manager at the apartment complex where I lived. So I had keys to the rec room and would basically get high and shoot pool at night when I had nothing better to do. We had a 'security guard' from 11pm to 7am--a young overweight guy who did patrols (unarmed, of course) to look for vandals or people breaking into cars. It wasn't a high-crime area, so having a rent-a-cop was really all we needed. He'd shoot pool with me some nights. One night as I was coming home from the bar, I saw him on patrol...walking around with some guy who lived in the complex who didn't work, but loved to talk tough. I thought I'd play a joke on him so I hid in the bushes and when he walked by I jumped out and shouted 'Hey!'
Sonofabitch turned and drew down on me with a 12 guage shotgun. I said, "Whoa! It's me, asshole! What the fuck are you doing with a full choke shotgun!" He explained that he'd seen some kids running around and wanted to scare them off, and that the gun wasn't loaded. I was so pissed off after staring down the barrel of that thing that I chose to take his word for it and did not ask to verify. I simply said, "Put that fucking thing away before you get yourself arrested and fired." and went to my apartment.
The next morning, I told the GM for the complex, she called his boss, and I never saw the idiot again.
Anyway, Gecko45 sounds a bit like this guy talked...oy.
