Traffic sucked, y'all. Left San Francisco at 2:15, and got to our ski house at 10:30. Multiple accidents had the highway closed for about four hours....got around some of the traffic using back roads...still, I'm glad to be off the road.

BREAKING: Jenny McCarthy 'Fixed' son's Autism.
She prayed for the strength to "fix" her own son Evan, who has suffered the symptoms of autism for years, and she tells Time that her prayers have come true.
And to think, all of those doctors with their "degrees" and "science" wasted valuable time, when all they needed to do was pray.

I'll bet you twenty bucks that, if she were to break her leg, she'd say, "Screw the prayer, give me a fuckin' doctor!"
I had a freshman high school student, back when I taught, whose father was ill. They were Christian Scientists, so they had daily prayer vigils. She was an honors student (International Baccalaureate English was my class)...very bright. She knew her dad was dying and that the prayer wasn't worth shit to him...he needed medicine. It was depressing to watch, but she was a real trooper...probably my favorite student...ever. Seriously. Great kid.

I guess so. I read just now in the NYT about the one in 1960.
In 1960, Chile was hit by the world's biggest earthquake since records dating back to 1900, USGS data shows. The 9.5 magnitude quake devastated the south-central city of Valdivia, killing 1,655 people and sending a tsunami which battered Easter Island 2,300 miles off Chile's Pacific seaboard and continued as far as Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines.

Hooray Homeland Security!
How the FBI Saved the Mormon Olympics from Feminist Terrorists
We are just now learning how close the nation came to an abortion disaster in 2002, when Planned Parenthood terrorists plotted against the Salt Lake City Olympics. Thankfully, the Pentagon and FBI were collecting intelligence on the pro-choice threat.
According to newly released documents obtained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation under the Freedom of Information Act, the Pentagon's Joint Forces Command and the FBI collected intelligence on Planned Parenthood as part of their preparations for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. It's unclear from the records precisely what that entailed, but we can all sleep a little easier knowing that people who advocate for reproductive autonomy are never far from the watchful eye of our benevolent security state.
Also, what better way to protect abortion providers from the hundreds of people who are trying to murder them every day—and often succeeding—than to monitor their movements constantly? Everybody wins.
Yay.

Fuckers.
Get a police report. The police won't do anything, but you'll need the report for any insurance claims.
Most likely, it's someone local, who's been watching your place and knows you're not there during the day.
The items mentioned, especially the jet ski and lawn tractor, are odd choices. Check dealers in the area, and just keep your eye out in the area for them. Might be worth checking the want ads, too. Or Craig's List.

EVERY SINGLE BIKE I have ever owned from age 6 onward has been stolen. ZERO EXCEPTIONS. I wish I were kidding or exaggerating.
It's probably been the same guy each and every time. Following me around from city to city, as the years stretch into decades, just to steal my bike. Friggin pervert.
I was just thinking about getting another bike the other day, but then I remembered that damned kleptomaniac is probably still watching me, just waiting for me to give in and present him with another target.
Maybe it's for the best. I'm not real sure what I would do with a bike these days; probably nothing good. Remember that kid you knew in your childhood who always found novel death-defying things to jump his bike off of, or 90-degree slopes to ride down so that he could achieve uncontrollable speeds that took him across a busy street during rush hour? I was that dumb-ass. I never sustained any injury more severe than the occasional bit
of road rash on the knee.
Of course, if I tried any of my former shenanigans today, I would instantly pulverize every bone I have; I would end up on a table with surgeons hovering over me, each of them thinking about the glowing write-up in the medical journals they'd get if they're able to save at least one of my limbs.
Still, I think I'd like to get a bike this summer. I'm much closer to 40 than to 14, and that would preclude a normal person from thinking about popping wheelies and seeing every incline as a potential ramp from which to get some gnarley air, but apparently I have the dumbass gene and it probably can't be suppressed forever.
Maybe that guy has been doing me a favor all these years - stealing my bike before I have the chance to do something that can't be undone...

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We're digging out from that massive Nor'easter from yesterday and I still have some shovelling to deal with, but it's not nearly the backbreaking stuff from two days ago when the concrete worthy slush/heavy wet snow came down. It's still pretty in these parts, which is a stark contrast to what's going on down in Chile, where that massive 8.8 quake struck outside Santiago. Tsunami warnings are out for much of the Pacific Rim, and one can only hope that those in the path get to higher ground when the warnings locally are sounded - or that if people notice the ocean receding abnormally that they get to higher ground as quickly as possible.
Some of the footage from Chile is reminiscent of the scenes from Kobe or San Francisco - collapsed elevated highways and cars tossed about like toys, buildings pancaked on garage areas, buildings aflame, and people worried about aftershocks (6.9 and 6.1 among the stronger ones).
Expect humanitarian relief to begin as quickly as possible.

Worst commute of the week - a group of passengers were stranded on a train on the line I used to take - first had delays departing by nearly 3 hours; then had another problem when their train got stranded after getting struck by a downed tree damaged air lines. We're talking nearly 7 hours of delays and being stranded. Hours more before they got rescued because they were a mile from the nearest road and rescue crews had to go on foot through two feet of snow to bring supplies and jury rig a fix to help the train make it to the nearest crossing.

Tempting but I still have the option to trade it in for the storm2. The pretty screen, coming flash support, and all the apps suckered me. I've had to find a different email client since droid only seems to care about google mail, bought an app to be able to change my font sizes since my eyes are starting to go south on me, an app to be able to set ringtones to groups, and another app to be able to set individual sms tones for my contacts, all options I never thought to check before I bought because I assumed that kind of minor crap would be standard options. So far I'm very unimpressed.

Morning, folks. Happy bday Rogue One!
This might have been posted yesterday-- exBush speech writer talks in the WaPo about the Teddy Roosevelt hate (and tangentially the Lincoln-hate) at CPAC. Thought it was worth a read, anyway:
[Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]
it was [Teddy] Roosevelt's political purpose to avoid a revolution. He sought to preserve the market system by regulating its health, safety and fairness. This is not laissez faire, but it is an authentic conservative tradition -- the use of incremental reform to diffuse radicalism. And few today would wish to return to 19th-century labor, health and antitrust standards.
All those few, however, seemed to be in attendance at CPAC, determined to sharpen an ideological debate. In the name of constitutional purity, they propose a great undoing. Not just the undoing of Obamaism. Undo Medicare and Social Security. Undo the expansive American global commitments that proceeded from World War II and the Cold War. Undo progressive-era economic regulations. Undo the executive power grab that preserved the union. Undo it all -- until America is left with a government appropriate to an isolated, 18th-century farming republic.
This is a proposal for time travel, not a policy agenda.

Here's the response we received, verbatim:
"Thank you for your kind request. Unfortunately, Mr. Gore's schedule is extremely overbooked and we're unable to offer any availability. It's very difficult to decline invitations such as yours, but it's an unfortunate inevitability of the growing influence of the climate crisis message and the demand on Mr. Gore's time. After repeatedly asking for an interview to address Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe's request for former Vice President Al Gore to testify on global warming, FoxNews.com finally heard from Gore's office.
We do apologize, but thanks for your interest."

Why? All he's had to face so far is attempts to slime him and he's used to that. No one has laid a glove on the science.

A Presidential first:
THIS WEEK IN GOD.... First up from the God Machine this week was a rare White House meeting, between Obama administration officials and prominent atheists. (via Ron Chusid)
Coalition leaders are billing their visit as an important meeting between a presidential administration and the "nontheist" community.
The Secular Coalition for America called the meeting "the first time in history a presidential administration has met for a policy briefing with the American nontheist community."
The Catholic League, which is offended for a living, condemned the gathering. "People of faith, especially Christians, have good reason to wonder exactly where their interests lie with the Obama administration," professional complainer Bill Donohue said. "Now we have the definitive answer." Donohue described attendees as "anti-religious activists" who would like to "crush Christianity if they could."

re: #236 RogueOne
Out of curiosity, I wonder what issues a theist lobby would have that aren't already covered by someone else like the ACLU? Are they against religion in schools based on anti-theology or the constitution.
Protecting Children from Neglect and Abuse: Liz Heywood will describe her harrowing childhood struggle as she was refused medical attention when stricken with painful, debilitating illness. While there are federal standards to protect children from medical neglect, there continues to exist an exemption to these minimum standards when religion becomes the motivation behind the neglect. Parents whose children are physically endangered by so called “faith-healing” and “Faith-healing treatment providers” must be held responsible by law for participating in the denial of proper medical treatment. Similarly, religious child care centers, for the sake of the children for whom they are responsible, must be subject to the same health and safety laws as secular child care centers that receive federal funding.Ending Military Proselytizing: Ensuring that the rights for which our men and women in uniform fight—among them freedom of conscience—are respected at all levels of the U.S. military, so that no service-member is ever coerced into religious participation, subject to proselytizing, or discriminated against because of their beliefs or lack thereof. Kathleen Johnson, Vice President of American Atheists, and Jason Torpy, President of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers will recount their own experiences with religious discrimination in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Fixing Faith-Based Initiatives: Taking all necessary steps to make certain that religious organizations receiving federal funding for social welfare programs cannot discriminate in hiring on the basis of religion, that program beneficiaries are never subject to proselytizing, and that secular options are made equally available to those in need.
"There has been a movement toward theocracy in America that is too often overlooked," said Faircloth. "As a result, good Americans, including children, have been harmed, and men and women in uniform denied their rights. This strikes at the very core of American values. The Secular Coalition for America seeks justice for every citizen, regardless of creed."
Happy birthday, RogueOne!

Nice post man. I had just put up a link to the Raw Story article above. Another quote I found to be telling was this:
"It is one thing for Administration to meet with groups of varying viewpoints, but it is quite another for a senior official to sit down with activists representing some of the most hate-filled, anti-religious groups in the nation," said Council Nedd, chairman of the religious advocacy group In God We Trust.
Gotta love the whole "not believing" = "hate" equation. Completely unsurprising.

I never sustained any injury more severe than the occasional bit
of road rash on the knee.Of course, if I tried any of my former shenanigans today, I would instantly pulverize every bone I have; I would end up on a table with surgeons hovering over me, each of them thinking about the glowing write-up in the medical journals they'd get if they're able to save at least one of my limbs.
Still, I think I'd like to get a bike this summer. I'm much closer to 40 than to 14, and that would preclude a normal person from thinking about popping wheelies and seeing every incline as a potential ramp from which to get some gnarley air, but apparently I have the dumbass gene and it probably can't be suppressed forever.Maybe that guy has been doing me a favor all these years - stealing my bike before I have the chance to do something that can't be undone...
Maybe I'm easily entertained...

As a result, U.S. pediatricians are calling on hotdog manufacturers to put a warning label on hotdogs to explain the choking risk, or better yet recall them as the highest risk food until they can be redesigned to reduce the choking hazard

The water itself is barely moving at all. It's transmitting the compression caused by the earthquake from on molecule to another, but each bit of water hardly moves at all, and doesn't move very fast. In fact, since the compression is followed by a corresponding extension, the net motion of any given bit of water is zero.
Until the water gets shallow. Then, all that energy being transfered has nowhere to go but up, and turbulence ensues.

DESPITE the pressing need to cut government spending, under President Obama’s spending proposal all the nation’s military services are set to see their budgets increase — all, that is, except the Coast Guard, the nation’s chronically overburdened maritime force, responsible for everything from global search and rescue to port security.
Under the president’s proposal, the Coast Guard’s budget will decline by 3 percent, to $10.1 billion, smaller than many medium-sized agencies under the other services. It’s a puzzling decision, considering the increasingly critical role the Coast Guard plays in protecting the national security interests of the United States — and considering that many much less vital military programs have been spared.

The economy is now likely expanding at just half the brisk 5.9% pace at which the government Friday estimated it grew last quarter. Business spending will make up for some of a slowdown in consumer spending - but not likely enough to reduce the unemployment rate much, experts said.

Ever been to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle? In addition to an actual pilot house and smoking lounge recovered from ships that used to ply the Great Lakes, they also have an extensive model collection of nearly every style of ship that's sailed on the Great Lakes, all built to the same scale. For some reason, I'm having trouble locating information on this collection, but it's pretty amazing if you're into that sort of thing.
Belle Isle is truly a pit, though. Don't even think about going down there after dark. A real pity; no other city in the country has an entire island set aside as a park, and it could be a true jewel if properly managed. Lots of history, slowly crumbling into dust down there.
The museum is still worth a visit if you're in the area, though.

Michael Smerconish: For Me, the Party Is Over
The national GOP is a party of exclusion and litmus tests, dominated on social issues by the religious right, with zero discernible outreach by the national party to anyone who doesn't fit neatly within its parameters...Where political parties once existed to create coalitions and win elections, now they seek to advance strict ideological agendas. In today's terms, it's hard to imagine the GOP tent once housing such disparate figures as conservative Barry Goldwater and liberal New Yorker Jacob Javits

The new guardians of the GOP obviously don't want any centrists around. Thats perfectly clear at this point. I feel like I'm in the same boat as the writer when it comes to claiming political loyalty. I have only ever pulled a straight ticket GOP lever in every national election since I could first vote in '82 and now I look at the collection of kooks and religious fanatics taking over the party and don't feel welcome at all.

So imagine the surprise of international inspectors almost two weeks ago when they watched as Iran moved nearly its entire stockpile of low-enriched nuclear fuel to an above-ground plant. It was as if, one official noted, a bull’s-eye had been painted on it.
Why take such a huge risk?
That mystery is the subject of fervent debate among many who are trying to decode Iran’s intentions. The theories run from the bizarre to the mundane: Under one, Iran is actually taunting the Israelis to strike first. Under another, it is simply escalating the confrontation with the West to win further concessions in negotiations. The simplest explanation, and the one that the Obama administration subscribes to, is that Iran has run short of suitable storage containers for radioactive fuel, so it had to move everything.

Ever been to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle?
Been there lots of times on school field trips and with the Scouts. It is a neat place. True that Belle Isle has become a run-down craphole, just like the rest of the city. They recently had to close the awesome aquarium that was just down the road from the Dossin Museum. That was a really cool place too.
But one museum I still really enjoy in Detroit is the Motown museum. Its not glitzy or showy, and the first impression might be that the legends of Motown deserve so more better. But, then you get into the actual recording rooms where the same piano and microphones that were used by all those great stars are still right there in place and there are pictures on the wall of superstars like Stevie and Smokey and Marvin standing there in the same spot you are, singing into that same microphone and its like woah. How cool is that. And they show you how they arranged speakers in the attic to make the unique reverb sound that made Motown so identifiable. Its a cool tour, better than a brand new sanitized museum would turn out.

Its a cool tour, better than a brand new sanitized museum would turn out.
now that is what we're talkin about!

Since the 2008 Colombian attack on a FARC base in Ecuador, Chávez has kept bilateral commercial ties in check. Politics aside, Venezuela and Colombia had been major partners in trade. Uribe had the temerity to compare Chávez's measures to the U.S. embargo on Cuba. Comandante Hugo shot back that Colombian paramilitaries had threatened his life and headed for the door in a tizzy. Uribe retorted: ``Be a man!'' Chávez snapped back: ``Go to hell!''
Hugo Chávez is not a normal president. While repeatedly winning elections, he has no intention of ever ceding the office. That's what we used to call a dictator. Only now gutting democracy from within and stacking the deck in favor of forever power is simply a matter of a country's internal affairs.

Yeah, that is pretty sweet.
It reminds me of the original Detroit Science Center, which was run out of a storefront on Cass Avenue. The "exhibit area" was the front of the store, and it was divided from the "workshop area" where the exhibits were designed and built by a rope, so you could watch the stuff being built, usually by actual, real-life scientists. It had a crappy, run-down charm to it that was totally lost when they opened a gigantic, new facility a couple of blocks away. The old place was cool, and as a kid I actually learned shit there; the new place, sterile and boring, populated with "docents" who didn't know jack about science or much of anything beyond the scripts they were given.
The Belle Isle Aquarium was the oldest aquarium in the country until it's closure. The exhibit space is small and confined by modern standards, but the whole inside is lined with green and aquamarine tilework that makes you feel like you're underwater. It was closed due to pure politics, and could easily have remained open if not for pure idiocy and bigotry on the part of the city council. The adjoining Conservatory has been run by a private group for some time, with much success, after years of similar decline. So there's still some hope that a private benefactor will be able to prevail on behalf of the aquarium when the council's current phosphorescent stupidity dims somewhat.

Well, that’s free speech, isn’t it? Everybody gets to express his or her point of view, no matter how obnoxious, right?
No, not right. Not at York. At York, speech is free — better than free, subsidized– for anti-Israel haters. But for those who would defend Israel, York sets very different rules.
In advance of York’s annual hate-Israel week, the campus group Christians United for Israel applied to use university space to host a program of pro-Israel speakers.
The university replied that this program could only proceed on certain conditions.
It insisted on heavy security, including both campus and Toronto police — all of those costs to be paid by the program organizers. The organizers would also have to provide an advance list of all program attendees and advance summaries of all the speeches. No advertising for the program would be permitted — not on the York campus, not on any of the other campuses participating by remote video.
These are radically different and much harsher terms than anything required from the hate-Israel program. The hate-Israel program is not required to pay for its own security. It is free to advertise. Its speakers are not pre-screened by the university.

The cookies were stolen from an attached garage of a home in Lakeland township on Thursday afternoon. The garage, owned by a Girl Scout volunteer, had originally held 150 cases of Caramel deLites, Tagalongs, Trefoils and other cookie varieties, but all but 34 cases had been distributed.

Drinking all that coffee does have a decent track record of results. Voltaire was notorious for his 50 cup a day addiction, yet it seems to have done him no harm:
Voltaire, who drank copious amounts of coffee throughout his life, was once warned that the beverage was a slow poison. "It must be slow," the philosopher replied, "for I have been drinking it for sixty-five years and I am not yet dead."

Liberalism, atheism, male sexual exclusivity linked to IQ
Political, religious and sexual behaviors may be reflections of intelligence, a new study finds.
Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa at the the London School of Economics and Political Science correlated data on these behaviors with IQ from a large national U.S. sample and found that, on average, people who identified as liberal and atheist had higher IQs. This applied also to sexual exclusivity in men, but not in women. The findings will be published in the March 2010 issue of Social Psychology Quarterly.
The IQ differences, while statistically significant, are not stunning -- on the order of 6 to 11 points -- and the data should not be used to stereotype or make assumptions about people, experts say. But they show how certain patterns of identifying with particular ideologies develop, and how some people's behaviors come to be.
Ahem. Permit me just this once:

Hell ,,,,, at some point in time, two guys were sitting around looking at a chicken. One must have said to the other 'I'm going to eat the next thing that comes out of that"
Hence ,,, eggs for breakfast was born!

I know the feeling. When I moved into my house there were so many things to get done. There still are 10 years later.
My folks still have a few items from their punchlist from their move....30 years ago! I did them a favor by moving to my new place 2 huge bookshelves that had been lying on their sides for 7 years. Doesn't matter if one moves across the planet or down the street, moving means a lot of stuff going wrong.

This is the most disgusting "Dirty Jobs" ever...
Since I am a snooty elitist who doesn't have a TV, I haven't seen Dirty Jobs in half of forever. One episode that nearly made me lose several days' worth of lunch involved the host having to prepare sheep skins, and this apparently involves squeezing by hand dozens of gigantic pustules or cysts that contain absolutely prodigious amounts of STUFF. Think yellowish-white toothpaste that apparently smells like hell.

Civets aren't eaten in Indonesia, but at least 2 major cultures there eat dog meat occasionally. I was given the chance to do so several years ago (before I met my wife), but my lady friend accompanying me to the restarant in Manado threatened to not kiss me ever again if I did! Just as well anyway, would have gotten a lot of flak for it back home....

Liberalism, atheism, male sexual exclusivity linked to IQ
Ahem. Permit me just this once:

From your post
The IQ differences, while statistically significant, are not stunning -- on the order of 6 to 11 points -- and the data should not be used to stereotype or make assumptions about people, experts say.

Yes, one should avoid making judgements about individuals based on information about trends in the group to which they belong.
Nevertheless, it appears that reality's liberal bias is showing again...:D

Poor silvertroll. Here I thought people would notice that I used that actual quote myself....
Alas. Looks like stereotypes sometimes fit, huh?
I just thought this was funny because it would make Rush Limbaugh's head explode. The fact that it made you make such a silly comment is a delicious bonus.
