Polish President and Scores of Top Officials Killed in Crash

World • Views: 2,463

My heart goes out to the people of Poland today. This is horrible news.

The Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, and his wife were among 96 people killed when their plane crashed in thick fog on its approach to a regional airport in Russia early this morning.

The governor of the west Russian town of Smolensk confirmed there were no survivors from the Tupulov Tu-154 plane, which came down at 11am (7am GMT) about a mile (1.5km) from Smolensk airport.

“The Polish presidential plane did not make it to the runway while landing. Tentative findings indicate that it hit the treetops and fell apart. Nobody has survived the disaster,” Smolensk governor Sergei Anufriev told the Russia 24 news channel.

The Polish government will hold an emergency meeting later today. Officials said the head of the Polish army, the governor of the central bank and the head of the presidential administration were also on board the plane, as well as the families of other senior officials.

That was a thought in my head for a few seconds. Perhaps not a World War, but a serious conflict would no doubt ensue if in fact political agents were behind this crash. (Which would be seriously unlikely anyhow.) As it turns out, bad weather and pilot error are looking like the causes in this tragedy.

Indeed terribly tragic news. Hearts and prayers go out to the people of Poland and those who directly lost loved ones.

9 Cato the Elder  Sat, Apr 10, 2010 4:28:51pm

Why would they put everybody on one plane and then let the pilot make four unsuccessful runs at a fogbound airport?

Russian plot, or could it be because all EU countries are now actually run from Brussels?

10 wrenchwench  Sat, Apr 10, 2010 4:30:24pm

I would think it is particularly painful for President Kaczynski’s twin brother.

re: #9 Cato the Elder

Perhaps this.
[Link: www.timesonline.co.uk…]

Kaczynski, whose body was also said to have been found, was a former anti-communist campaigner with a penchant for taunting the Kremlin. He had every reason to believe he was not welcome in Russia. Polish observers said he may have interpreted an order to divert to Moscow as an attempt to sabotage his big day in Katyn, where he was due to attend a mass and give a speech.

Russian media reports said he had once become angry with a pilot who refused to land in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital, on the grounds that it was unsafe. The same thing may have happened at Smolensk, aviation experts claimed. They suggested he may have pressed the pilot to make at least two attempts to land.

If there was any foul play on Russia’s part then I’m pretty sure the consequences would be pretty bad, especially considering Poland’s a NATO ally, no?

I strongly doubt that was the case, though. Just a really sad accident that didn’t have to happen.

Agreed. Were this in fact the outcome of a Russian plot, the result would be a few thousand more lives lost in a military confrontation at best; a nuclear winter at worst. This is why thinking about it dispels such a conclusion. The facts underlying the cause of the crash seem plenty clear anyhow. Heavy fog + old Russian-made plane + Pilot’s refusal to land at Moscow or Minsk + 3 aborted landings + lots of trees = 1 preventable and horrible accident.

Russian plot, or could it be because all EU countries are now actually run from Brussels?

I’m going to guess that someone influential on the plane was browbeating the pilot about landing on schedule rather than diverting. After all everyone knows how flimsy and unreliable Russian aircraft are.

I don’t have any solid information on Poland itself but commercial conspiracy theories flourish in other ex-communist countries. Take a look at the current Pravda sometime.
This is probably an outgrowth of the rumor culture that grew up in communist times when people knew it was only a coincidence if something their media said actually turned out to be true. A lack of skepticism toward free media, a product of its relative novelty and the audience’s collective lack of experience, could also be a factor.

Hot Air has some similar nonsense going on:

This has a feel of a day of Infamy to me.

I suspect the Russians masterminded this crash. How convenient for Russia that every single person in any leadership position, including the central banker and the army chief are dead. Expect a Moscow puppet government to emerge with Obama’s imprimatur.

Tupelov, ice, fog, blablabla. I don’t buy it for one second. Rule number 1: Never trust the Russians.

All well planned assassinations has the plausible deniablity of an “accident”.

Remember, the President of Poland was very high on Putin’s to-kill-list, probably only slightly below Mikheil Saakashvili, the President of Georgia.

There are conspiracy nuts in Poland just like everywhere else.
This accident has all the components to feed plenty of conspiracy theories:
The irony that this happened as the delegation was traveling to commemorate the Katyn massacre, that fact that Kaczynski hated Russia, the Polish president in exile dying in a plane crash during WW2, etc.
There is still a great deal of animosity in Poland towards Russia, and many people will try to find a sinister explanation.

Unprecedented outrageous outrage!
Obama quietly leaves WH without press, breaking years of protocol

President Barack Obama quietly breached years of protocol on Saturday morning by leaving the White House without the press with him.

The White House press corps traditionally travels with the president anywhere he goes, inside and outside the country, to report on the president’s activities for the benefit of informing the public and for historical record.
….
Reporters and photographers didn’t have a chance to see him or his vehicle to verify his presence at any location.

Although nobody outside the White House or the press may have noticed, Obama broke years of tradition.
