It was, but it was also a case of-- by the book, we could have executed far more deserters. But we didn't want to, because we're not that kind of society. Whereas Hitler was executing thousands.
It was definitely done somewhat symbolically, and he was chosen as an example-- but it wasn't because there was any particular axe to grind against him personally.

Just a short rant about science journalism, and especially science press releases: they tend to be poorly written and full of errors.
Put in the spin-offs a link to an important announcement today about exoplanets. Good science news and worthy of reporting, but the actual PR linked has little errors here and there that really ought to have been caught before release.

That's my feeling as well. It was tragic case in the classical sense, though: Slovik fell on his own misdeeds. It's shame that he had to pay the full freight like he did, but someone had to. An army needs to maintain discipline, and sometimes that means executing a deserter.

Well, not in any political way, but weather the offense is theft, corruption, assault or homicide or slander at some point society needs to make some examples to remain credible. IMO.

Obama: US can't force Mideast peace deal
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
14/04/2010 01:39
WASHINGTON — US President Barack Obama said no matter how hard he tries, Israel and the Palestinians may give up on a US-brokered peace deal.Giving a surprisingly downbeat assessment Tuesday, Obama says peace remains a vital goal. But he says that US pressure can't succeed if the Israelis and Palestinians themselves conclude they don't want an agreement.

An exclusive survey of some 1,800 active-duty troops shows the percentage of self-identified Republicans has decreased by one-third since 2004, from 60 percent to 41 percent, while the percentage of self-identified independents has nearly doubled to 32 percent during the same period.
These career-oriented officers and mid-grade and senior enlisted members are still far more conservative than liberal, but they are less likely today to identify with the GOP, the survey shows.
Much of the shift appears to have occurred only very recently, with the percentage of troops identifying themselves as Republican dropping nine percentage points from 2008 to 2009 and the percentage of those calling themselves independents increasing 10 points over the same period.
Interesting.

It's not going to be the kind of watershed that the Republican party seems to think that it's going to be, IMO.
The Dems are going to loose seats, absolutely no doubt about it. They had too damn good a year and picked up some whodathunk Congressional seats for them not to lose some of them without a strong set of coat-tails.
However, Rs are going to lose some seats, too. I see this as much more an anti-incumbent year than a pro-Republican year.

Well, there was a congressional election today, in Florida. Guess which party won? (remember: Health Care Reform just passed, and America hates it...so this is an indictment of Obama's unpopularity).

[...]Another problem is that when the press pool got close to the reported location, they were told that Obama was leaving and to turn around. The press pool complied, but why? Wouldn't they have wanted a photo of him, even leaving the event, to formally document his whereabouts? What's also suspect is the very casual, nothing-to-see-here tone of the Time article.
Something is most definitely wrong. The President of the United States venturing out to a soccer game that didn't exist in a high-crime area.

Okay, okay...enough suspense:
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Democratic state Sen. Ted Deutch on Tuesday handily won the first U.S. House race since Congress passed President Barack Obama's massive health care overhaul. With 59 percent of precincts reporting, Deutch had 62 percent of the vote compared to 36 percent for Republican underdog Ed Lynch. No-party candidate Jim McCormick trailed far behind with just 3 percent. The Associated Press called the race just about two hours after the polls closed.

Amazing... Am Thinker links you to the Athletic Schedule for grades 7 and up to prove no soccer game. But the President's daughters are in the third and the sixth grade. They claim that it was in a dangerous neighborhood - in fact it's one of the safest in D.C. They show a google picture to show how bad a neighborhood it really is. When google took the photo there was construction in the area. The view that they show on Am Thinker is only available if the President were to have climbed into the dumpster parked nearby.

Since Emudude has brought up the topic, I would add that if Obama has found a place to hide he better keep it a secret, he may want to return there.
The Hansard reports that “Obama born in Kenya”. (March 25, 2010, page 31.) [www. bunge.go.ke]
In fact this record of the Kenya Parliament has revealed much about the great love and devotion that the Kenyan people have for their “son of Kenya”. The records of November 5, 2008 and March 25, 2010 alone are evidence enough suggesting that Obama has a great connection with the African country. [www.bunge.go.ke] And should not the question be asked, will the Kenya government ask to see and examine Obama’s long form birth certificate now under seal?

I think we are being led down a rabbit hole. This administration is very good at creating red herrings. What ever happened during that time, we would need to look at something bigger than just where the president was, and why the press corps was lured away, and why none of the players seem interested in truth. The commentators who mention that the heads of several important nations were in town, and that Poland's highest officials had just died, are most likely onto something. If this is indeed a nice neighborhood, rather than a bad one, I think that hints at a secret meeting, rather than a drug run. But it could have been both. Imagine how much blackmail power a foreign country could have in the white house is they were the supplier for POTUS. But life isn't a Tom Clancy novel. Beware the red herring.

Seconded, only if the misspelling is kept.
I get the feeling that "IAmDagny" wouldn't recognize Occam's Razor if it shaved his dog.

I'm guessing it's a she. Isn't the main character from Atlas Shrugged named Dagny?

Never read it. If I'm going to sit down with a book that big it better have dragons in it. Or be written by a Russian.

I wouldn't know. I was fortunate enough not to have my mind poisoned by Rand as a teen. Instead, I chose to poison it with King, Lovecraft, and Orwell.

“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." -- John Rogers
I'm sure someone's posted that quote here before, but it's good enough to repeat.

Human 1: "Crap, I think I see a group of vampires over there".
Human 2: "Quick, lets rush over there and see if we can't blend in".
Vampires: "Screw you guys, get the fuck away from us. Cthulhu is looking to eat mortal souls, and we don't want to get caught up in the mix.
Human 2: "C'mon, just let us hide out with you for a couple of minutes 'til this blows over".
Vampires: "FOAD, snack food. We're getting as far away from you warm-bloods as possible".

When a culture haunted by modesty issues is infested with big government, the latter will at some point attempt to control your orgasms. This piece of footage illustrates how it does transform the surveillance that is corrupting it into a sexual assault against its inhabitants. Where there is no sexual self-determination there can be no self-determination of the soul as well, and one persons ultimate pornography is another persons worst abuse, or vice versa.
