The bonfire hadn’t been lit yet at the time of the accident, so the aggies did not catch fire. I do in fact think there’s a good possibility of a young mid falling 20 feet or more, dragging a few others down with him, and the whole heap landing on the heads of their supportive comrades. If risky aerial feats have a role in preparing leaders, the Navy should revive sail training. Annapolis would need 6 or 7 ships the size of the USCGC Eagle. Imagine the spectacle, it would bring joy to the hearts of tall ship fans the world over.
Incidentally, I thought this talk of an Aggie “cult” was just a malicious exaggeration until the bonfire collapse. Then I heard any number of Aggies praise the dead students for having “sacrificed themselves for the Aggie spirit,” as though this Aggie spirit could somehow be advanced by the senseless deaths of a dozen young people. If that’s the case, there is something seriously wrong with it.
In a much less serious Aggie setback shortly afterward, that dog they worship, Revile or whatever the hell its name is, bit its handler. Aggies carried on about it for a month.

You could learn a few things from Antelopes
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Scientists have caught male topi antelopes in the act of faking fear in front of females in heat as a way to improve their chances of having sex.
The male antelopes, observed in southwest Kenya, send a false signal that a predator is nearby only when females in heat are in their territories. When the females react to the signal, they remain in the territory long enough for some males to fit in a quick mating opportunity.
“I’m scared too, darling! Let’s hold each other…”

Water gun fight prompts hazmat case, evacuations
WOONSOCKET, R.I. - What started out as an innocent squirt gun fight between children turned into a potentially dangerous situation for a Woonsocket neighborhood. Firefighters on Sunday responded to reports of a strong smell of ammonia in the basement of a Grove Street home. Investigators told WPRI-TV they found a smoking 7-gallon barrel of sodium hydroxide, prompting a hazardous materials team response and the evacuation of three homes.
Sodium hydroxide, commonly used to clear drains, reacts strongly with water, creating an odor and heat.
Investigators determined that water dripped into the barrel during a kids’ water gun fight in the basement.

How do you feel about college football? Too dangerous? I’d be willing to be more folks have been injured playing sports for the academy than getting hurt in this homo-erotic exercise.
I was foolish enough to actually play college football, so perhaps we should consult Annapolis grad Robert A. Heinlein for his opinion:
The sport with highest prestige was a thing called “foot ball”-and first classmen sized up each new group of victims for candidates who might be expected to excel, or learn to excel, in this organized mayhem. David had never seen it-but now he saw it and it filled his peaceful soul with horror.
As well it might. It involved two gangs of eleven men facing each other on a field and trying to move an ellipsoid bladder down the field against the opposition of the other gang. There were rituals and an esoteric terminology, but that was the idea.
It sounds harmless and rather foolish. Foolish it was, harmless it was not-as the rituals permitted the opposing gang to attack a man attempting to move the bladder in a variety of violent ways, the least of which was to grab him and cause him to hit the ground like a ton of brick. Often three or four bit him at once, and sometimes inflicted indignities and mayhems not permitted by the rituals but concealed by’ the pile of bodies.
Death was not supposed to result from this activity but sometimes did. Injuries short of death were commonplace.
Unfortunately David had the ideal physique for success in this “feet ball”-height, weight, eyesight, fleetness of foot, speed of reflex. He was certain to be spotted by the first classmen on their return from mock sea battles and “volunteered” as a sacrificial victim.
It was time for evasive action.

First volume of Mark Twain’s memoirs to be published
This November, in what is sure to be a landmark literary event, the University of California Press will publish volume 1 of Mark Twain’s autobiography (volumes 2 and 3 are to come at later dates).Twain himself gave the university some 5,000 pages but stipulated that the work had to remain unpublished until the 100th anniversary of his death, so the manuscript has been languishing in the vault all this time — available to scholars (who have been able to use the work for their own Twain biographies) but no one else. On its website, UCP says that “the strict instruction that these texts remain unpublished for 100 years meant that when they came out, he would be ‘dead, and unaware, and indifferent’ and therefore free to speak his ‘whole frank mind.’”

The investment houses make money even on down days. It’s all about the volume - more shares traded, the more money they make. The Goldman Sachs of the world only lose money when trading volume drops. They love volatility because it keeps the volume up.

When is a secret policy not a secret? When it gets published in the NYT. The more things change, the more they stay the same and it doesn’t matter what Administration we’re talking about.
The Obama Administration and Gen. Petraeus had ordered a broad expansion of clandestine military activity in an effort to disrupt militant groups or counter threats in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and other countries in the region, according to defense officials and military documents.
Note the word clandestine. That means covert, secret, and otherwise not to be broadcast to the general public.
So, what does the Times do? You got it. They published it, based on their sources.
Once again, the Times thinks that its job is to determine the national security policy of the US and that they are the final arbiter of what is necessarily secret and what isn’t.
I will say that this does give me a better feeling about the Administration’s counter-terror operations that they were letting the DoD take on covert ops in the Middle East, although my confidence in the Administration’s actual knowledge of ME policy - particularly the operation of terror groups like Hizbullah, Hamas, and the ME peace process leave me scratching my head as if they’ve never heard of Bernard Lewis, or read anything other than the diplomatic releases that engage in pseudoreality on a regular basis.

Customer stuck with counterfeit money from the post office
A business inadvertently gives you counterfeit money — are you stuck with it? In most cases, yes. But what if that business happens to be a branch of the federal government?Los Angeles resident David Lipin found himself asking this question the other day after he cashed a $1,000 Postal Service money order at a West Hollywood post office.
He said the postal worker handed him 10 $20 bills and eight $100 bills.
Lipin, 43, said he then stopped at a nearby gas station to fill his tank. He tried to pay with one of his new $100 bills.
“The clerk took a close look at it and said it was fake,” Lipin told me. “Then she looked at some of the other $100 bills. She said they were fake too, and she called the police.”
Alarmed, Lipin phoned a lawyer friend. At his friend’s urging, he too called the Los Angeles Police Department to report that he’d been given bogus bills. “I wanted it very clear that I was a victim and not someone trying to pawn off some counterfeit dollars,” Lipin said.
The cops arrived at the gas station and inspected the cash. They shook their heads.
“The police said the $100 bills were actually $5 bills that had been bleached and altered,” Lipin recalled. “They showed me how you could hold them up to the light and see Abraham Lincoln’s face. All eight turned out to be counterfeit.”
So now what? The police took a report but said they couldn’t do anything. They suggested that Lipin try the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, which serves West Hollywood.
A sheriff’s deputy also said they couldn’t do much and suggested he try the Secret Service. So did the post office when Lipin returned to the same branch that had given him the funny money.

Congress is moving swiftly on the Gulf oil spill….they plan on quadrupling the gas tax.
WASHINGTON — Responding to the massive BP oil spill, Congress is getting ready to quadruple - to 32 cents a barrel - a tax on oil used to help finance cleanups. The increase would raise nearly $11 billion over the next decade.
The tax is levied on oil produced in the U.S. or imported from foreign countries. The revenue goes to a fund managed by the Coast Guard to help pay to clean up spills in waterways, such as the Gulf of Mexico.
The tax increase is part of a larger bill that has grown into a nearly $200 billion grab bag of unfinished business that lawmakers hope to complete before Memorial Day. The key provisions are a one-year extension of about 50 popular tax breaks that expired at the end of last year, and expanded unemployment benefits, including subsidies for health insurance, through the end of the year.
The House could vote on the bill as early as Wednesday, though Democrats were still working Monday to round up the votes. Democratic leaders had wanted to hold a vote Tuesday.
There has been little public opposition to the oil tax from the petroleum industry. But the overall bill would add about $134 billion to the federal budget deficit, drawing opposition from Republicans and some Democrats.
I thought BP is supposed to pay for everything.

Except that much of the daily volume on the NYSE is actually done electronically these days and any problems will go around the floor.
In fact, that’s one of the situations occurring with the major crash a few weeks back - even as the NYSE floor engaged in a temporary halt on certain stocks to figure out what happened, other exchanges went ahead with trades based on the faulty figures.

Controversial Julius Malema defends his actions
[Link: news.bbc.co.uk…]
“The leader of South Africa’s ANC Youth League, Julius Malema, landed himself in serious trouble when he refused to stop singing the controversial struggle song “Kill the Boer”.
Many blamed the song for the murder of white supremacist Eugene Terreblanche and Mr Malema’s continued defiance led to disciplinary action against him by the ruling ANC.”
South Africa’s Julius Malema defends his radical views
[Link: news.bbc.co.uk…]
“When it was put to him that by seeking to compare himself to Nelson Mandela, he caused offence to many, he replied: “You know nothing about Nelson Mandela.”
The 29-year-old youth leader did say he might stop singing the inflammatory phrase “kill the boer” from an old liberation song, boer meaning a white farmer.
But he added that South Africa’s economy remained racially divided.
“I am fighting for the emancipation of blacks and Africans in particular, politically, socially and economically,” he said.
“There are racial divisions in this country and the economy continues to grow but the gap between the haves and have-nots continues to grow. It’s racialised.”
Asked what he thought of Zimbabwe’s land redistribution policy under Robert Mugabe, he described it as “very good except the violent part of it”. “
Sure… that’s why he repeats a song about killing white farmers.

The Lower Manhattan mosque insanity continues….
A Tea Party flamethrower blasted Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer Monday as a “Jewish Uncle Tom” for supporting a proposed mosque near Ground Zero.Mark Williams, chairman of the Tea Party Express, took to his blog to spew hate at Stringer after the politician compared him to Adolf Hitler at a press conference last week.
Williams countered that Stringer is a “sniviling [sic] worm” and “a Jewish Uncle Tom who would have turned rat on Anne Frank.”
Stringer vowed not to back down from “a thug” like Williams and expressed surprise that the Tea Party hasn’t booted him.
As I said when I reported on this a few weeks back, the mosque is likely to get community board approval, and thereafter will likely get City Council approval. The site is a few blocks from Ground Zero and would be an expansion of an already existing mosque in Tribeca and the hope is that it would be the Muslim equivalent to the 92nd Street Y or the JCC of Manhattan, each of which operates significant community programming. Lower Manhattan is sorely lacking on that ground.

GOP tries to upend NC campaign backed by tea party
Republican officials are working to derail the campaign of a tea party supported candidate in North Carolina — circulating documents from the man’s messy divorce that depict him as a pot smoker who has called himself the messiah.
,,,,
In Hoke County divorce records, his wife said in 1995 that D’Annunzio had claimed to be the Messiah, had traveled to New Jersey to raise his stepfather from the dead, believed God would drop a 1,000-mile high pyramid as the New Jerusalem on Greenland and found the Ark of the Covenant in Arizona. A doctor’s evaluation the following month said D’Annunzio used marijuana almost daily, had been living with another woman for several months, had once been in drug treatment for heroin dependence and was jailed a couple times as a teenager. The doctor concluded that his religious beliefs were not delusional. A judge wrote in a child support ruling a few years later that D’Annunzio was a self-described “religious zealot” who believed the government was the “Antichrist.” The judge said he was willfully failing to make child support payments.

Not so fast. There seems to be a problem for the mosque plans….
Possible Landmark May Halt Ground Zero Mosque
Opponents of a mosque planned near Ground Zero may be getting some unexpected help from the City.
The building at 45 Park Place was constructed in 1857 in the Italian Renaissance style and was one of dozens in the Tribeca neighborhood proposed as landmarks in the 1980s.
It was damaged by debris in the September 11 attacks, and now an Islamic organization would like to tear it down to make room for a $100 million, 13-story mosque and cultural center just three blocks from the World Trade Center site.
The City Landmarks Preservation Commission will decide if the building is too historically and architecturally significant to raze.

Canadian gun dealer who obtained weapons in McMinnville arrested after feds find ammo
By The Associated Press
May 20, 2010, 7:47PMFederal agents have arrested a Canadian gun dealer who kept a stash of sniper rifles and ammunition at a Washington storage unit near the U.S. northern border.
The man had recently picked up four weapons and 480 rounds of .50-caliber ammunition from a gun shop in McMinnville.
Oliver King — who also uses his given name, Hamid Malekpour — was arrested Wednesday in Ferndale, which is about 10 miles south of the Canadian border.
He made an initial appearance today at U.S. District Court in Seattle on charges of making false statements to a government agency and being an alien in possession of firearms.
A hearing was set for next Wednesday to determine whether he should continue to be detained pending trial. According to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Seattle, he entered the U.S. at Blaine the previous night and lied when he said he was going to pick up his wife at a Bellingham mall.
The Iranian native also lied about why he had a new Canadian passport just issued that morning, the complaint said. He told border guards that his old one had gone through the wash, but agents found it during a secondary inspection — with no water damage. The old one, which was not set to expire until 2013, had been canceled, but it was not immediately clear why.
It had three visas for Iran, two issued last year and one issued this year. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents tailed King as he left the border crossing. He drove to McMinnville, where he went to a gun shop and loaded his car with the guns and high-caliber ammunition. Agents say he then drove north to the Ferndale storage unit, where he had $30,000 worth of sniper rifles, handguns and ammo.
When asked about the weapons in his car, King said he was a hunter, according to the complaint.
Amir Zarandi, who owns McMinnville Hunting and Police Supplies, said King is a consultant and has bought weapons there for years. Zarandi said King also manufactures ammunition, is well known in the business and “doesn’t do anything illegal.” “He’s a good person,” Zarandi said. “I’m sure this is just a technicality sort of thing.”
According to the complaint, King was a licensed firearms dealer in Canada under his other name. The license was temporarily suspended when the Canadian government discovered he was selling guns over the Internet, but apparently the license has been “recovered” and may be valid.

re: #70 lawhawk
Administrations change, the NYT is still can’t support its own country. Assholes.

That might limit the alterations to the exterior, but wont stop plans altogether. They can alter the interiors, and the LPC has signed off on alterations to other historically significant buildings in the City, including the Edward Durell Stone designed building at 2 Columbus Circle that was known for its marble facing, although the LPC did end up killing a plan that would have saved St. Vincent’s Hospital when they wanted to demolish and/or alter several buildings in Greenwich Village.

You do realize that it isn’t just the Post op-eds that are opposed to this right? I work a block from Ground Zero and know the area quite well. There is opposition to the mosque because of its location several blocks from Ground Zero and how it has presented its proposal. There are questions over its financing, although I have seen that some of the financing is coming from the Ford Foundation and Rockefeller Brothers Fund

Hey, how’d that interview for the DMBA go?
The interview went surprisingly well. I was nervous as all hell (and even admitted as much to him at one point, since I figured honesty was a good idea), but we got along just fine. We seemed to be on the same page about a lot of things, and even had some things in common, since both of us lived in Houston for many years. I was able to talk shop about some of my radio days, and we could speak shorthand to each other due to both of us having lived there.
Not only that, we were able to talk easily about the degree and about my goals and what I saw myself doing one I graduated. He seemed to get where I was coming from and what I was looking for. Hopefully, he could see my passion for the program and he decides that I’m a good fit.
No word back yet, since the interview was on the 13th. Still, I’m keeping a positive attitude about it all. :D

That op-ed was written by a moderate muslim.
I am an American Muslim dedicated to defeating the ideology that fuels global Islamist terror — political Islam. And I don’t see such a “center” actually fighting terrorism or being a very “positive” addition near Ground Zero, no matter how well intentioned.
To put it bluntly, Ground Zero is the one place in America where Muslims should think less about teaching Islam and “our good side” and more about being American and fulfilling our responsibilities to confront the ideology of our enemies.
He doesn’t sound like a hate-monger to me. What’s the problem with this particular opinion piece?

That’s a point of contention, of course. You may recall I’ve ranted extensively here about the New Left’s long march through the institutions of the American Left and their current status as well within the mainstream - in deed, ideologically, well within the leadership - of the Democratic party.

Here’s some more hate filled rhetoric from that NY Post article for ya…
The World Trade Center site represents Ground Zero in America’s war against radical Islamists who seek to destroy the American way of life. It is not ground zero of a cultural exchange.
We American Muslims cannot merely passively avoid Islamists like the Muslim Brotherhood and its offshoots. We need to ask ourselves: Are we Americans who happen to be Muslim or Muslims blindly demanding to be American?
American Muslims will be better served if this project is built further away from Ground Zero and focuses on leading a reform effort. If we help build anything at the WTC site itself, it should be timeless memorials to all those who lost their lives on 9/11 — memorials blind to faith, race, creed or national origin.
On Sept. 12, 2001, I was first an American. When those planes hit the World Trade Center, they hit at the core of my being as an American. The attack on my faith by the terrorists was secondary to their attack on my homeland.

Right. The opinion that the mosque shouldn’t be built near Ground Zero. Why? A whole lotta hot air.
I understand fully why that piece would be popular here in the early morning hours.
I don’t care where the mosque is built; it seems far enough away from Ground Zero me, and besides, the locals have a good handle on it.
It’s simply the opinion piece I’m talking about. Whatever the general consensus is about the Post, that particular piece was a non-hysterical opinion piece about the mosque. I appreciated having the guy’s viewpoint.

Witnesses recount Lakewood police murders in trial of Clemmons’ sister
[Link: seattletimes.nwsource.com…]
“TACOMA — It was a quiet Sunday morning for barista Sara Kispert, with the usual suspects at the Parkland coffee shop. The middle-aged couple up front were reading the newspaper, hunting for bargains. Three other regulars, all police officers, hunkered around a table: Tina, with her latte and cinnamon roll, Mark, drip coffee and apple fritter, and Ronnie, an O.J.
Greg, another regular, was waiting to order, wallet in hand, when the chime rang on the shop’s front door and a heavyset man in a stocking cap poked his head in the door.
Hi, how can I help you? asked Kispert, a fresh-faced 20-year-old. But she knew right away something was wrong. “He didn’t seem to be there to order coffee,” she said.
The man was Maurice Clemmons. Over the next several minutes, he would kill Lakewood police officers Tina Griswold, Mark Renninger, Ronald Owens and Greg Richards.”
Ice, tread carefully.

Private pay shrinks to historic lows
Paychecks from private business shrank to their smallest share of personal income in U.S. history during the first quarter of this year, a USA TODAY analysis of government data finds.
At the same time, government-provided benefits — from Social Security, unemployment insurance, food stamps and other programs — rose to a record high during the first three months of 2010.
Those records reflect a long-term trend accelerated by the recession and the federal stimulus program to counteract the downturn. The result is a major shift in the source of personal income from private wages to government programs.
The trend is not sustainable, says University of Michigan economist Donald Grimes. Reason: The federal government depends on private wages to generate income taxes to pay for its ever-more-expensive programs. Government-generated income is taxed at lower rates or not at all, he says. “This is really important,” Grimes says.

Huh. So…the $65billion that Democrats promised to doctors to bring their Medicare reimbursements up to par? Apparently they stuck it in the new “jobs bill”.
Don’t talk to me about the CBO scoring of Obamacare anymore…the CBO only scores what you tell them to score. I wonder how many other “costs” are going to surface in wholly unrelated bills over the next few years?
the entire CBO angle is laughable….they are part of congress and answer to no one

Cops furious at ‘don’t-kill’ bill
City cops are livid over a legislative proposal that could handcuff the brave officers involved in life-and-death confrontations every day — requiring them to shoot gun-wielding suspects in the arm or leg rather than shoot to kill, The Post has learned.
The “minimum force” bill, which surfaced in the Assembly last week, seeks to amend the state penal codes’ “justification” clause that allows an officer the right to kill a thug if he feels his life or someone else’s is in imminent danger.
The bill — drafted in the wake of Sean Bell’s controversial police shooting death — would force officers to use their weapons “with the intent to stop, rather than kill” a suspect. They would be mandated to “shoot a suspect in the arm or the leg.”
Under present NYPD training, cops are taught to shoot at the center of their target and fire their weapon until the threat has been stopped.
“These are split-second, spontaneous events — and officers have to make a full assessment in a fraction of a second,” said an angry Michael Paladino, president of the Detectives Endowment Association. “It is not realistic, and it exists only in cartoons.
“It’s moronic and would create two sets of rules in the streets if there is a gunfight. This legislation would require officers to literally shoot the gun out of someone’s hand or shoot to wound them in the leg or arm. I don’t know of any criminal who doesn’t shoot to kill. They are not bound by any restrictions.”
“The legislators have their heads buried in the sand, and we would not be able to fully protect the public or ourselves.”

Folk need to consider the possibility that this recession is going to become a fact of life for quite some time now. The international economic order - and everyone’s a part of it now - is a house of cards, as the mortgage crisis here in the states and its effects in Europe showed, even as the folly of Greek budgetary policies threatens to kill the Euro and, by extension, the US market for exports, etc. It might be wise to consider what it was that folk did during the Great Depression to get by, and try to model yourselves on that.
I was fortunate enough to have been around those members of my family who endured the Depression, and even a few who were old enough to remember tales of what THEIR folk did during hard times in the Old Country.

Wedding couple, guests arrested after transgender marriage ceremony in NW Pakistan
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Police in northwestern Pakistan broke up a wedding between a businessman and his transgender bride, taking away the couple and 43 guests for violating laws against same-sex marriage in the devoutly Muslim country, an official said Tuesday.
Guests were dancing to drums when authorities made the raid Monday in Peshawar city, police official Javed Khan said.
The bride and many of the guests are transgender, meaning they are biologically male but present themselves as female in their daily lives.
“It falls under same-sex marriage, which is not allowed under our law,” Khan said.

Egyptian Cleric Sheik Ahmad Al-Johainy: “We Must Get Our Children Accustomed to Hating the Jews”
“We must enlighten the younger generation about our cruel enemy. We must show them who the enemies are, who the Jews are. This must be done in several respects.
First, there is the family. The parents must take an interest in their children, and teach them who the Jews are. This must be achieved by means of the Koran, by studying the raids of the Prophet Muhammad, and how he treated the Jews of the Nazir, Quraiza, and Qaynuqa’ tribes – how the Prophet dealt with the Jews, how he signed a treaty with them, only to be betrayed by them, and what he did to them, after they had violated the treaties. We must teach these things to our children. We must plant in our children’s hearts the truth about the Jews – that oppressive and cruel enemy.
[…]
We must teach our children who the Jews are. We must get our children accustomed to hating the Jews. We don’t want our children to grow up knowing nothing.”

Actually, it would be extra dangerous for Ahmadinejad or Kim to escalate tensions just now. Why would they rock the boat? Iran will be in an immeasurably stronger position when they have a tested arsenal of a half dozen nukes, with missiles to carry them. That’s a few years down the road. Their rational course is steady as she goes. For now.
As to Kim, he’s sick. Somebody will inherit his post, who knows who? For now, NK’s war prospects are dimmed by a probable lack of unity of command. Furthermore, they’ve put SK on its guard.
Come to think of it, NK’s war prospects suck no matter which way they turn. They have no allies, not really, not if they start the war. Their military is strong but it’s not state of the art, and their food situation is parlous. How can they afford to wage a long war? How can they hope to win quickly? The U.S. armed forces are not the greenhorns of 1950. The SK armed forces, now, are reasonably well armed and trained, nothing like the disorganized mob of novices that NK faced in 1950.
With those facts before them, a rational leadership would look for ways to improve its economy and forget about preparing for a war that will not come to them and that they cannot bring to their enemy and prevail.

Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 24% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-four percent (44%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -20 (see trends). The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve. It is updated daily at 9:30 a.m. Eastern (sign up for free daily e-mail update). Updates are also available on Twitter and Facebook.
Overall, 42% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president’s performance. That is the lowest level of approval yet measured for this president. Fifty-six percent (56%) now disapprove of his performance.
Forty-four percent (44%) say the president is doing a good or excellent job on national security issues while 39% give him such positive marks on the economy. See other measures of the president’s performance at Obama By the Numbers. Thirty-four percent (34%) say the president is doing a good job handling the Gulf oil spill while 33% give him poor grades on that topic.
Most Americans have “come to believe that the political system is broken, that most politicians are corrupt, and that neither major political party has the answers,” observes Scott Rasmussen. Just 27% believe Congress knows what it’s doing when it comes to the economy and 41% say that a group of people randomly selected from the phone book would do a better job than the current Congress. In his new book, Scott adds, “Some of us are ready to give up and some of us are ready to scream a little louder. But all of us believe we can do better.”
-20…is that a record?

Democrat former Mayor of Detroit sentenced to prison for probation violations.
A judge sentenced former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick up to five years in prison for violating the terms of his probation on an obstruction of justice conviction. An audible gasp erupted in the courtroom as deputies rushed to a row where Kilpatrick’s family and friends were sitting, The Detroit Free Press reported. One woman was escorted out, the newspaper said.
“Your testimony in this court amounted to perjury,” the judge told Kilpatrick, according to the Free Press. “Most compelling is that you lied to this court, continue to lie, after you pleaded guilty to lying…. The initial 120 days incarceration did nothing to rehabilitate you.”
Kilpatrick had asked Judge David Groner to show him compassion during the Tuesday hearing, but Groner said “that ship has sailed.”
He failed to pay required restitution even as he set himself up in a lavish way after serving 99 days in jail.

Iran’s got options other than the nuclear program, which appears to be progressing quite nicely, thank you very much. Economic warfare is always on the table - the Straits of Hormuz, after all, and the frank admission by Robert Gates that our warships are vulnerable to asssymetric Iranian attacks. Sure, it’d suck for Iran, but there’s nothing quite like jamming your thumb in an enemy’s eye to rally the folk at home around you, after all.
As for Kim, well, he’s governing a starving, heavily-armed, death-camp. Think of Jonestown with missiles for a parallel. His actions are not necessarily rational in their motivations or announced purposes, but they are rational in terms of the situation in which he finds himself, which suits him quite nicely. I think we can expect more trouble from him, and don’t forget that a strike by KORK forces needn’t be some long protracted affair - they could shell Seoul from where they are now, even with their antiquated artillery, and they’ve shown a remarkable capacity to improvise. A quick burst through the DMZ, and who could say what would happen, except that Asian markets would likely view the situation with some concern.

Uhoh. But (or perhaps this should be ‘and’):
Now, remember Folks said in his post Monday that “I will not be discussing the details of that relationship, nor will I be granting any additional interviews about it to members of the media beyond what I have already been compelled to confirm.” So if he is in fact the source for (or the author of) the new FITSNews story, he appears to be willing to discuss the relationship.
In another wrinkle, as first reported by Ben Smith, it has emerged that Folks’ consulting company was paid over $1,000 by Haley’s state senate campaign in 2008. Folks told the AP, in an interview conducted before his original blog post was published, that the relationship took place in 2007 when he was doing communications work for the campaign.

Concern meaning a tailspin, that is. And we’d take it hard economically, too. If Asia craters, we follow. And the Norks may well understand that. Added to all the arty they have pointed at Seoul, we don’t have many options past a strongly worded letter. Try to actually push hard, and we’d get hurt.

I don’t know anything about politics in SC and so I don’t follow who blogs about it— I never heard of this guy before. Something about the whole story seems weird.
He claims they had an affair while she was married and before he was, and that he was disclosing it only because he was tipped off that it was going to break this week. He claimed he wouldn’t discuss the relationship (he referred to it as ‘an inappropriate physical relationship’). Now there’s an unsigned post on his blog talking about these text messages and such— which she must have known he had. Yet yesterday at her press conference she denied ever being unfaithful (I did not sleep with that man, that blogger!)
I’m trying to figure out the meta— who is screwing who and why (as opposed to who screwed whom then). The guy claims he still supports her candidacy. Seriously, WTF is going on in SC?

Thought I’d share…
By jingo, I just checked in, and that’s the first thing a see!
I’m putting it on my Facebook page.
Good morning, all.

True and it’s shameful. They’re turning kids into criminals for doing what kids do.
The thing is, in a situation organized and supervised by adults, violence in response to verbal bullying is not appropriate. The bullying should be addressed by the coach. Sure, The Kid cried because he struck out but he’s no wimp. A few weeks ago he caught a ball in the face and got knocked down but, got up and walked it off. About five minutes later, he caught a fly ball with bases loaded.

Absolutely. I’ve coached youth baseball for many year (currently a 15-18yo team). My 3 rules for all teams is: have fun, keep learning the game, always support your team mates. Teasing is not supporting.
As for your kid crying about striking out, he’ll outgrow it. My son would do that too from time to time. What I always stress to the kids is that failing 7 out of 10 times at the plate will put you in the hall of fame. The game is humbling. But its still fun.

It’s the middle of class. My ADHD-BFF-boys have calmed down, and are taking notes. Everyone is calm, focused on the lesson. And Dvora raises her hand.
Unsuspecting, I say, “Dvora, do you have a question?”

The meanest thing I do to righties that annoy me now is play the drinking game. Wait until they are toasted and then ask them probing, emotional questions about their childhoods. They will usually start crying.
It is a mean thing to do, and incredibly easy.

I hate ties. They usually hinder the blood circulation to the brain. In some cases during my days in cubical hell it seems as thought it was completely cutting of the circulation to managerial types. In order to avoid that you have to have a loose collar and tie and then it make you look silly.

Meth, porn use by drilling agency staff
WASHINGTON – Staff members at an agency that oversees offshore drilling accepted tickets to sports events, lunches and other gifts from oil and gas companies and used government computers to view pornography, according to an Interior Department report alleging a culture of cronyism between regulators and the industry.
In at least one case, an inspector for the Minerals Management Service admitted using crystal methamphetamine and said he might have been under the influence of the drug the next day at work, according to the report by the acting inspector general of the Interior Department.

Firing dispatcher for Facebook drug joke was right, Wisconsin council claims
A CITY council in Wisconsin defended its decision to fire a Police and Fire Department dispatcher who joked about drug addiction on her Facebook page.
Dana Kuchler, a 21-year veteran of the West Allis’ Dispatch Department, joked that she was addicted to “Vicodin, Adderall, quality marijuana, MD 20/20 Grape and (absinthe)” on the social networking site. She was fired from her job for the remarks and appealed to an arbitrator, claiming the Facebook post was a joke. She pointed out she had written “ha” in it and urine and hair samples tested negative for drugs.

By and large, although I suspect also that is a result of social conditions and conditioning.
However, as teacher, lemme tell you, the idea that girls are easier to manage is wishful thinking.
Everyone I talk to says the same thing—boys can be threatened and bribed into sitting still, and they bond easily over fart jokes.
Girls…OH MAN.
I can’t imagine having a roomful of them everyday. I’ve always been told boys are easier to raise than girls and, thanks to my SIL, I’ve gotten just a taste, and still my wife is insisting we have kids. I think she might be crazy.

Interesting. This is from the AP article:

That makes one person that admitting using meth.
Remember Oliver North’s secretary, Fawn Hall? She was a meth addict for a while there.
Right now I’d say that one person that used meth doesn’t make for a meth crisis within drilling agency.

He said when my SIL is working with him, he’ll go all the way to the back of the kitchen and won’t even make eye contact with her. HAHAHA. While staying well out of this bananas discussion, I would like to comment that respect for local autonomy has been a rallying cry through this whole Arizona mess, often from people (not RememberTonyC) who feel no compunction about trashing and stereotyping any major urban area they expect they wouldn’t like.
Several times, my attempt to talk about my problems with the Arizona law from the perspective of someone living in a border state with a considerable population of both legal and illegal immigrants from Mexico turned into outright attacks on California.
So, please, folks, I’m not in the mood for any more charges that the coastal people are disdainful to the rural hicks from—Arizona? Yeah. The backwoods of Arizona.

re: #564 SanFranciscoZionist
Great Moments In Sixth Grade Teaching:
It’s the middle of class. My ADHD-BFF-boys have calmed down, and are taking notes. Everyone is calm, focused on the lesson. And Dvora raises her hand.
Unsuspecting, I say, “Dvora, do you have a question?”
And she says, into the quiet classroom, “Yes! Why is Tamar (turning to look at her classmate/BFF) so ugly and mean? And why does she talk about people behind their backs?”
Rather a million squirrely little boys.
I can relate to this.
If you get the 18 yr old boy who thinks he knows everything, it is very easy to provide an undertone of “I am the larger alpha male. I will eat you if you give me crap. This is college kiddo, so, your parents will not be able to save you when you fuck up.”
I once was teaching intro to physics for pre-meds. I had this kid who sat in the front, leaned way back, legs out, rolling his eyes and being surly - on the first day as I was giving my opening spiel.
I walked next to him, looked down, and asked in a firm, but projected voice, if he had any problems?
He said rising to the occasion (he’s a good, kid, he has guts) “Yes I do have a question. How will learning this save lives? “
To which I responded:
“I save lives every time I teach this class by keeping idiots out of medical school. If you can’t figure out the simple pendulum, you are not smart enough to cut on someone. Medical schools agree with this view.”
“Any other questions?”
“No…” he said
“Then sit up straight, show some respect, or take this course next semester.”
The kid actually was very bright and turned out to be a great student. I knew he would to - if I established the pecking order early. This is something that I think could only work with a boy though. It redefined the competition where he was going to gain status by showing me how capable he was. It’s really the exact same way that drill sergeants thump young men into place and the young men get their stuff in order and end up loving the sergeant for it.
This approach does not work with young women.
It has been my experience that to get results, (getting results is defined as the student learns the material and does well) you have to almost do the opposite. If you make them feel guilty for not working or that they have not lived up to their potential, there is too much chance that they will believe they really have no potential and give up. If you give them the stern “accept no foolishness” routine, they may consider themselves fools in your eyes, or worse, their own.

“wingnut wave?” I suppose that refers to those such as myself who dare to disagree with your “oh so correct 100% of the time” positions. how sad that we’ve stooped to such levels. and one thing I have noticed is that on the many occasions where I have agreed with one of your points (and you know there have been quite a few), I’m a nice guy. But today when I happen to cross you, I’m a member of the wingnut wave! I guess some people can dish it out, but aren’t too good at taking it. I can handle both … at least I do my best. I know you like to have the last word, so I promise I am done for the day and you are welcome to respond without any more “wingnut drivel” from little old me. Cheers …

Uh-huh. This makes the second comment in a row where you refer to ‘the new LGF’. Pretty clear what your actual problem is.
Quoted for truth. Someone isn’t happy about the ‘New LGF’.
The outraged spluttering about the term ‘wingnut wave’ we have just seen would appear to be an attempt to deflect from that obvious fact.

Jim … she can fight her own battles. I don’t mind the new LGF, otherwise I wouldn’t continue to post. Of course, the downside for me are the somewhat immature noobs that can’t abide alternate (right of center) opinions that disagree with their own. LGF is still a good place. Charles does a fine job with this site. I will continue to post here and you can continue to downding my opinions. Although I do enjoy an occasional pat on the back, I really don’t mind being downdinged. I have plenty support from fellow posters, and that keeps me coming back.

Ain’t that so? Nevertheless, I enjoy adding my own comments, as do others too!

Nice try, but severely lacking in logic. Just because you are here doesn’t mean you are happy here.
Jeez, it’s not as if we aren’t all familiar with the sad spectacle of the forlorn wingnut moping around this site looking to attack liberal posters on the grounds of incivility of some other such nonsense while nursing a sad, secret hope that one day LGF will turn into a wingnut hell-hole more to their liking.
It’s just like someone who is a member of that category of poster to deny that such a category exists here. And when someone gets all huffy about getting downdinged and makes snarky comments about the “new LGF” it’s a bit of a giveaway.
I have plenty support from fellow posters, and that keeps me coming back.
Huh? Support from fellow posters with similar views? I thought you valued ‘fighting your own battles’? Is getting support from fellow posters something to celebrate if you are on the right, but a sinister tactic that interferes with the lofty principle of ‘fighting ones own battles’ when talking about posters on the left?
It would seem so, in some peoples imaginations at any rate…
