More true religion:
My wife relates that when she was young, her granny read her the story of the Nativity, including the Massacre of the Innocents.
To which she asked, “How could they tell that it was boy babies that they were supposed to kill?”
Her prude Northern English granny could not bring herself to mention the anatomical difference between boy and girl babies, so she explained “boy babies have thicker fingers.”
Which casued my wife to panic, worrying: “I have fat fingers, too. What if they come and murder me in my sleep?”

Two of the four didn’t make it and we’re not sure if #3 is going to survive the morning, but the fourth one is very strong and healthy, at least. Something to look forward to when I get home from work, I guess.

(lyrics to the above yo)
Run, run like you’ve already done
You’ve gotta move to meet demand
You’re far flung when the music’s done
You better find a place to land
It’s all true when I lit that fuse
I never meant to be your friend
I kicked the tire but it caught on fire
I’m gonna try to make amends
You act mysterious
but you speak in gibberish
You can take your memories
I’m off
I better be alone
Alone
Part two, now you’re back in the news
you’re gonna spread the word around
I’m all done because the song is sung
I’m gonna black my windows out
You move mysterious
but you speak in gibberish
You can take your memories
I’m off
I better be alone
Alone
No harm no foul
It’s not fun at all
It’s not fair leading us there
It’s no fun at all
You act mysterious
but you speak in gibberish
You can take your memories
I’m off
I better be alone
Alone
I’m gone
I better be alone
Alone

BP oil spill brings big order to Seattle boat builder
[Link: seattletimes.nwsource.com…]
“The impact of the nation’s worst oil spill has stretched from the Gulf of Mexico to the shores of Puget Sound, creating a small boom for one local company.
To combat the oil that continues to gush out of the uncapped well on the Gulf floor, additional shallow-water skimmer boats are being ordered from Kvichak Marine Industries.
Two skimmers are already on their way to the Gulf. Seattle-based Kvichak has orders for 28 more boats, in a deal that may be worth about $10 million.
This is the first time the company has built boats during an oil spill. During such emergencies it usually just gets orders for more of the belts and pads its boats use to collect oil, because contractors run through their supplies quickly.
“Normally you don’t do it,” said Keith Whittemore, president. “[But] this damn thing keeps spewing oil.”
The BP spill is unique in that it’s been leaking for more than two months. The sheer scope of the cleanup effort is now beyond the capability of the 68 or so shallow-water skimmer boats that emergency-response company ES&H has working the spill, said Donald Nalty, ES&H’s chief operating officer.
Around 2,000 skimmers, from 200-foot barges to the 30-foot shallow-water boats made by Kvichak, are working the spill. The 30 skimmers from Kvichak will boost the size of ES&H’s fleet by about 50 percent.”

Well what do you expect, they are built by people who know they get choked with the force or fried with lightening if they make suggestions.
Really, the Sith need to learn labor relations.
Hopefully, they won’t use Cuba as their basis for dealing with “suggestions”:
Restrictions to freedom of expression create climate of fear in Cuba
[Link: www.amnesty.org…]
“The report Restrictions on Freedom of Expression in Cuba highlights provisions in the legal system and government practices that restrict information provided to the media and which have been used to detain and prosecute hundreds of critics of the government.
“The laws are so vague that almost any act of dissent can be deemed criminal in some way, making it very difficult for activists to speak out against the government. There is an urgent need for reform to make all human rights a reality for all Cubans,” said Kerrie Howard, Deputy Americas Director at Amnesty International.”

X wing?
This is so easy.
X Wing. For three reasons:
1) An X Wing is probably flying in formation with other NR ships. If you’re flying it, and we have to assume that you are because if not the question wouldn’t be relevant, then you’re a star of the story. If you’re a star, your NR formation has an A Wing, which was a prototype and never released for full production. But the A Wing is so advanced and awesome that nothing can beat it in combat.
2) Given that the above is true, as logically proved, it also means you have an MCSC-80 or, given the fact that you are a hero of the story, probably the MSCS-90 prototype as your mothership backing up your squadron. Nothing beats an MCSC with a squid in charge, as everyone knows from watching ROTJ. Hence, you have major backup to blow away anything coming at you, no matter how thick they’re flying around the area.
3) Given that the first two are true, as has been proven logically, the final reason an X Wing would win over anything else is because you’re coming from the SW Universe, which means you’re flying with The Force. Given that no other major Sci-Fi franchise also has magic backing them up, you win by default. Nothing beats The Force.
So like, duh. Totally. There you go. Proven with absolute 100% logic and reliability. Child’s play.
Next? =)

One of my brothers used to have a toy cannon that really fired, it used “Bangsite” as an accelerator. I always wondered why he loved to aim it at me? Thank goodness it didn’t have much of a range or I’d be covered with miniature cannonball pockmarks! Ahhh, sibling revelry! Those were the days…

Gotta disagree - because the Force isn’t magic. It’s a frakking parasitic infection. Or do you just want to ignore the whole midichlorian infestation/infatuation. And even all those midichlorians weren’t enough to watch every last one of the Jedi whacked when they weren’t looking (and quite a few when they were) by nothing more than a bunch of bad ass Jango Fett cloners. Who was left? Yoda and Obi Wan. That’s it. Everyone else was killed. And it doesn’t matter how fast your reaction times are if you’re trying to out run a laser blast in space. If your ship can’t make the turn, it will burn.

Bangsite, IIRC, is their name for carbide. When wetted it generates acetylene, the same technology as a miner’s lamp.

re: #197 Summer
Next? =)
I love you.

Well, it does inform us as to why the charges were done as they were - they weren’t charged with espionage, but with failing to register as foreign agents - a far less severe charge. Money laundering is the other major charge (up to 20 years and $500k in fines).
That compares with espionage, which could give the death penalty under 18 USC 794.

Assassination of a Candidate for Governor Scars Mexico
[Link: news.yahoo.com…]
“Last Friday, June 25, gubernatorial candidate Rodolfo Torre raised both his arms to the sky in front of 15,000 cheering white-shirted supporters in a baseball stadium minutes from the Rio Grande. After he promised security in his violence-ridden border state of Tamaulipas, the crowd erupted to his campaign anthem, sung to the catchy tune of the smash hit “I Gotta Feeling” by U.S. pop band Black Eyed Peas. They had reason for celebration. Opinion polls all concurred that the mustachioed physician would win the July 4 election by a landslide of more than 30 points. But on Monday, as Torre left the state capital to conclude his campaign, assailants showered his convoy with gunfire from automatic rifles and heavy-caliber weapons, killing him instantly. Army commanders said the attack bore all the signs of the Zetas, a paramilitary drug gang that was born in the state.”

Couple who met, and fell in love, on South Park Bridge 66 years ago sad to see it go
[Link: seattletimes.nwsource.com…]
“It was that September day when Vern Landry, his brother Eugene and two friends were driving across the bridge and saw the 17-year-old girl walking alone, heading home from her job at Boeing’s Shelter Cafe. Was she cute? “She was a girl,” said Vern Landry.
His brother was driving his ‘41 Chevy and stopped the car in the middle of the bridge and offered her a ride home. Ardis wasn’t about to get into a car with a bunch of strangers, even though she thought Vern was pretty darned handsome.
So they asked her if they could follow her home across the bridge. She agreed, knowing she had her parents and eight brothers and sisters waiting for her. Lots of protection if these guys turned out to be hellions.”

GRAND ISLE, La. – Rough seas generated by Hurricane Alex pushed more oil from the massive spill onto Gulf coast beaches as cleanup vessels were sidelined by the far-away storm’s ripple effects.
The hurricane was churning coastal waters across the oil-affected region on the Gulf of Mexico. Waves as high as 6 feet and winds over 25 mph were forecast through Thursday just off shore from the Mississippi Delta in Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle.
In Louisiana, the storm pushed an oil patch toward Grand Isle and uninhabited Elmer’s Island, dumping tar balls as big as apples on the beach.
“The sad thing is that it’s been about three weeks since we had any big oil come in here,” marine science technician Michael Malone said. “With this weather, we lost all the progress we made.”

Unless I’m mistaken, supreme court judges are highly esteemed for their ability to make objective decisions about the law, regardless of their moral values or political concerns. So no, why should we hold a judge’s political views against him/her? Don’t they have the right to have political beliefs, just like everyone else? It would seem to me that conservatives love to paint all potentially liberal judges as partisan hacks incapable of making just rulings because they’re hellbent on pushing forward their Progressive Agenda, though.

Obama, who pushed for such a step, may try to use the Israeli move as a spur to intensify US-brokered indirect talks between Israel and the Palestinians, as he seeks to open a direct channel between the two sides.
allow some civilian goods?..wtf?…that’s just intentionally misleading, in fact Israel just doubled the number of aid trucks into Gaza and plans to more than double that number

So much for that. Hamas refuses to talk with Fatah over reconciling their differences. They use defenestration to get their point across.
Oh, and a Hamas bigwig was arrested, just a month after being released for violating the terms of his release. Go figure.
Meanwhile, Iran doesn’t like Coke, smiles, or the Zionists.
They’ve banned Cokes and Zionists. They’re prohibiting the advertising of products and companies that do business with Israel. I guess no Intel inside. Or Microsoft, or any other company that does business in Israel. Which pretty much includes every tech company around because Israel is a worldwide leader in high tech, software, and cutting edge medicine.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad signed Wednesday a new amendment to a law in the Islamic Republic that forbids the airing of advertisements for “Zionist companies.” The blacklist of prohibited companies is comprised mainly of international companies, mainly American, owned by Jews or that operate branches in Israel.
Among those on the list are Coca Cola, Nestle, Intel, and IBM.The boycott is rooted in Iran’s “Palestinian support law,” which acts as a response to assertions that Israel prevented goods from entering the Gaza Strip during its raid on the flotilla.

Indeed - there isn’t going to be a serious groundswell of change on the court unless Kennedy retires (or Roberts, Thomas, Alito, or Scalia retire or leave the Court). Kennedy is the swing on many cases, and if Obama gets to pick his replacement, then we’d see a possible shift in the ideological balance on the Court.
Right now, it appears that the justice most likely to leave the Court next would be Ginsberg (poor health), followed by Scalia and Kennedy and Breyer (age 74, 73 and 71 respectively). The other members are in their 50s and 60s and seemingly good health. In other words, barring some unforeseen deaths, the composition of the court is likely to be stable for some years to come.

I guess I missed the day the second amendment came up for a vote.
Unless you are talking about Heller and other similar cases. If so, I continue to think that the phrase “well regulated militia” has meaning in that amendment. I think one way one would regulate a militia is to tell its members that they can only carry certain firearms, so that training and resupply would be simpler.
The second amendment absolutists read those words right out of the amendment, which I think is against the normal rules of statutory and constitutional construction.

Washington (CNN) — President Obama has agreed to waive a Pentagon rule and let outgoing Gen. Stanley McChrystal retire at his full four-star rank, a White House spokesman said Tuesday.
While the general is short of the time needed to retire at his current pay grade, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Obama would ensure he keeps his rank as he steps down.
“The president believes and has talked with Secretary Gates about this, and we will do whatever is necessary to ensure he, somebody who has served the country as he has, can retire at a four-star level,” Gibbs told reporters.

The question is one of competing rights. McDonald says you have a right to own a handgun, but not to use it in any manner you choose. People have the right to move freely in public. If carrying a weapon is likely to threaten or disrupt the peace (prevent free movement), the govt has an interest in protecting the public, and the right of the public has to be balanced against the right of a gun owner.
I think the govt can deny public carry rights to people until they can prove they can safely carry a weapon without endangering the public. The weapon has to be one that can sensibly be used for self-defense.

Because crafting legislation is not among their proscribed duties, and because SCOTUS doesn’t generally act unless the lower courts require guidance. You don’t get to SCOTUS but through appeals, for the most part, and that requires a law to be applied before bringing a case.

I don’t question the right to bear arms.
What I do question is the fact that we don’t punish misuse of firearms seriously enough.
If an unsupervised young child gets hold of a parent’s gun, for example, and it’s discharged, the owner of the gun should go away for a long time.
Sadly, most parents don’t, under the “well, they’ve suffered enough” theory. Just do a google search for “shot with parent’s gun” and see for yourself….

Just do a google search for “shot with parent’s gun” and see for yourself…
Here in Oregon there was a famous case in which a young man was prosecuted for killing his sister*. The parents said that they should have been prosecuted, but the state went after him.
*He said it was an accident, and his subsequent life seems to bear this out.

Probably. And, also, he was Einstein.

They had his report card on display. Top marks in math and science. Not so much in languages—not failing, just not top marks.
Although, I will say, my kids all speak late, but do well in school. My cousin didn’t speak until he was 3, and he’s working on a scientific PhD right now at UW. I’m not sure what this has to do with Einstein, except that my oldest used to have Einstein’s hair when she woke up.

I have to say, I’m still chuckling over the Sharron Angle interview last night. I can’t wait to hear other Republicans asked if they support her positions on the little things, like her belief that the constitution doesn’t establish a separation of church and state.

Sound reasoning, but you have to present it as a proof (as I did). So A for effort, but F for presentation, young man! =)
You need logical steps. Prove A, then use A to build a case for B. Then finalize with C as a therefore conclusion.
Anyway, everyone knows that if you’re a good enough Jedi (and you darn sure are as the star of the story, as I’ve proved in case A at the onset), then you obviously can swing away from the bast before it cuts across your path because you are sensing it coming from the minds and the environment around you.
Like, so simple. I did my nails typing that. That’s how easy it was…. =)

(CBS/AP) White House advisers are nearing a recommendation for President Obama to choose a military trial for self-professed Sept. 11, 2001 attacks mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed and four of his alleged henchman, senior administration officials said Thursday.
The review of where and how to hold a Sept. 11 trial is not over, so no recommendation is yet before the president and Obama has not made a determination of his own, officials said. The review is not likely to be finished this week.

For those NYers out there - your legislature thinks you’re ignorant, foolish, or just plain not paying attention.
I’m sure you’ve been hearing about all the dire cuts that had to be made in this year’s budget.
Well, here’s a few numbers that you can use.
Last year’s fiscal year budget was $131.9 billion (FY 2009-2010).
This year’s fiscal year budget proposed by the Legislature with portions likely to be vetoed by Gov. Paterson: $135.7 billion.
The state is increasing spending by $3.8 billion. $3.8 billion that New York just doesn’t have (and they are billions in deficit from last year, that carried over to the new fiscal year too).
Even if you go by Paterson’s budget numbers, the state budget increases over last year’s bloated disaster (which itself was an increase in spending of more than 8% or $10+ billion from FY 2008-2009). The state keeps spending more than can be reasonably expected to take in. It isn’t reducing spending - and it’s trying to balance the budget again with more tax hikes (cigarettes, wine sales in groceries as per Paterson’s proposal, business taxes, and eliminating sales tax exemptions on clothes).

The single greatest cause of problems in youth athletics:
PARENTS.
The only time I’ve inserted myself into the game was when The Kid took a line-drive in the face. I was out on the field in a flash.
Last week he said a decision by the ump “sucked” and the ump heard him. Ump chewed his ass out completely. After the game, I walked up to the ump and thanked him, apologized and told him that that word is forbidden in my house.
