Good. Let's get this thing passed and move on.

Oh good. Rush and Glenn now have something to cry about over the holidays.

Great, I'm glad to hear this since it should give at least a shot in the arm to the economy even if it also means more debt when unemployment is low again.
///Now maybe the Senate can also get to work on the little things like moving towards a more fair an equal society where everyone can serve in the armed forces without fear of persecution based on things they can't control and regaining the ability to inspect Russia's nuclear arsenal....

They are trying to figure out how to be against earmarks and still get the money.
That's a tough needle to thread.

I'm against people knowing that I am for earmarks! And that is unequivocal!

They just need to blame it all on the Democrats. They're good at that.

1: Claim to be against Earmarks.
2: Take money.
3: Label anyone who dares to bring this fact up as a member of the liberal media.
4: ?????
5: Profit.
Tah-Dah!

It looks like reliable neo confederate Jim Demint is going to crash everything again.
DeMint will invoke a senatorial privilege to ask that texts of both the New START Treaty and the 2011 omnibus spending bill be read aloud on the Senate floor. The readings could take seven to 12 hours to verbalize the START Treaty, while the omnibus could take 40 to 60 hours, according to a spokesman for DeMint.
We have to keep the homos out the military and derail every fucking treaty signed by that Kenyan usurper, dontchaknow.//
I am ashamed to have ever been a part of the GOP at this point.

I propose an addendum to all bills requiring the statement "Fuck you DeMint." be added to the footnotes of every page.

I would actually argue at this point that he is an enemy of national security. He is knowingly and deliberately working to undermine th military and public safety for partisan gain.

That's always been an amusing distinction. What does "permanent" mean to a sitting Congress?

Distinction with a serious difference.
Consider the AMT. It's permanent. However, Congress has to act annually to reset the brackets to adjust for inflation. Failing to adjust for inflation means that the AMT hits millions more people (and more than a few that fall into the high end of the middle class).
Extending the tax cuts for two more years means we'll be fighting about this just in time for the 2012 general elections.
Had the cuts been made permanent, the issue would be off the table (though I'm sure some Democrats would be calling for its repeal).
The action on this bill is likely to turn the tax issue into a biennial nightmare unless a permanent fix is made.

That clarifies it--all cuts are temporary and the piss-fight is unending.

re: #25 Decatur Deb
Well, the AMT is a special thing. Percentage taxes don't care about inflation. The AMT is a percentage tax with a hard number exemption; if the exemption was tied to inflation, it wouldn't have to be redone all the time.
27 | MinisterO Wed, Dec 15, 2010 11:23:30am |
The payroll tax cut primarily benefits the middle class. In this climate that's a pretty neat trick.

It's an amendment to a bill. Not a bill in itself. Otherwise, yes.

I am not a smart man (to quote Forrest Gump) but I suspect that is not what the constitution was driving at. Funny how we can find our way around the clear intent then slap ourselves on the back and congratulate each other on how *&$%^& cleaver we are. Lawyers!
