Limbaugh Kills Applause-Gate, But Jim Hoft Ignores World, Continues Derp

Wingnuts • Views: 19,187

DERPAs we documented last Saturday, Jim Hoft (the “Gateway Pundit”) may be the single dumbest and least scrupulous blogger on the right (and that’s saying something).

He was the first to float the amazingly stupid “Applause-Gate” story — mistaking the Tucson memorial’s closed captioning system for an applause prompt, and claiming that the White House engineered a nefarious scheme to make the crowd cheer.

From Hoft, the fail spread rapidly, finding willing parrots in Michelle Malkin, Hot Air, Doug Ross, Pamela Geller, and many other corners of the right wing echo chamber.

But yesterday the right’s true leader, Rush Limbaugh, killed the story before it could get to Fox News.

RUSH: Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t know if you have seen this. There’s a couple blogs out there saying that there were applause signs on the JumboTron at Obama’s speech. Now, I’ve looked at screen shots of this and I don’t think those were applause signs. As an expert in closed-captioning, I think they were closed-captioning Obama’s speech. I know they were, or it was a big teleprompter, one of the two, but the text of the speech was on the JumboTron, and if you’re watching a closed-caption movie, TV show, they’ll put in parentheses a song that’s played. And they might identify the song or the type of music it is. If you’re watching a program where there is applause, there will be parentheses, “applause” in the closed-captioning.

After that, the wingnut feeding frenzy subsided remarkably quickly.

But the originator of this monumentally numbskulled bogus outrage, Jim Hoft, has yet to retract or even acknowledge his mistake. Will Hoft ever take responsibility for his ridiculous false claims?

He's more likely to claim Obama operatives kidnapped Rush, and left a liberally brainwashed clone in his place.

/well, we have just witnessed the birth of a conspiracy theory...

13 (I Stand By What I Said Whatever It Was)  Tue, Jan 18, 2011 12:54:30pm

My guess is that Hoft will use the backdoor that Limbaugh gave him: the possible trickery – Democrats are just so evil that even if it was closed captioning, that does not disprove that it was intended for nefarious rallying purposes to bamboozle the college crowd, sez Limbaugh:

Now, in this case the pictures I've seen, the word "applause" was in parentheses between other words of text Obama was using. Now, given that the audience was a bunch of college students who can hear and might have no experience with closed-captioning, they could have seen the word "applause" and went nuts. They could have thought that it meant applaud. But I don't think that was the intent. It might have been trickery. Somebody might have realized, "Hey, by the way, if we put 'applause' up there during the transcript, he-he-he-he, some of these kids are gonna think -- let's do it, let's do it." That could be the only way.

I guess it's open to interpretation. I thought the ending was a kind of relapse, but I guess other people see it as a kind of deception for the sake of ending his pain.

My experience with real life mental behavior is that people will pick comfort over rationality, and even when they are forced to admit the truth soon relapse back into denial for the sake of comfort.

Factfree conspiracy theories are all the rage right now on the far Right. No evidence can stop their faithful populist rampage.

It extends down to the most mundane of conversations too. EVERYTHING is a conspiracy. I posted a note at Malkin's cite (on a 'Palin Derangement Syndrome' thread) about her attending the big gun show in the wake of the Arizona shootings, and made a bland statement about how that sort of thing just feeds her critics. . . and BLAMMO. Judging from the responses, I'm apparently part of a big liberal conspiracy to disguise myself as a conservative and attempt to discredit Palin. And my comment was just the clue they needed to uncover this insidious threat. As if A) I needed to do ANYTHING to discredit her, and as if B) The readers there would entertain for a moment, anything even neutral about her. . .let alone negative.
