House Republicans Pass Amendment to Ban Abortion Training

The GOP goes after medical education in the all-out attack on women’s rights
Health • Views: 29,623

The GOP’s war on women’s reproductive rights is the story at LGF today; here’s another piece of disturbing news, as House Republicans pass a bill that will ban the use of federal funds to train health professionals in abortion-related services: Lawmakers Inject Anti-Abortion Politics into Yet Another Bill.

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said the amendment, offered by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), would bar qualified teaching health centers from using federal funds for comprehensive medical training that includes instruction in the provision of abortion services.

Keenan said the amendment is an unprecedented restriction on medical training. It would limit drastically doctors’ ability to receive comprehensive and necessary instruction in reproductive-health care, thereby putting women’s health at risk.

“Regardless of how one feels about legal abortion, reasonable lawmakers can agree that doctors should be as well trained as possible to deal with any medical situation that may arise,” Keenan said. “Women should have access to the best care possible in any and all circumstances. This amendment is yet another example of the disregard anti-choice politicians have for women’s health.”

You want safe, legal, and rare? Well, rare isn't good enough, and we may not be able to change the legal part (yet), but by God we'll make sure it isn't safe.

Fuck you bastards. Even if I like a particular Republican locally, I'll still vote against him now just to keep the Republican numbers at this point.

Hows pandering to the bat shit fucking crazy working out for you now?

This is in a way less disturbing than the previous story about Texas, because this law at least I know will enter into that black hole of political entropy known as the US Senate and never come out the other side to finally become a law...

At least that had better be what will happen to it or I will have quite a bit of RAGE to spew at my party's ever spineless senators and Obama for not Vetoing it.

I wonder what sort of reasoning NC moderate-liberal Republican Women use to justify their continued membership in the GOP?

Someone should go around whispering to Republicans that the appendix is sacred and see if they ban teaching doctors how to do appendectomies.

At this point, Republican wingnuts are just emptying their magazines before heading home in 2012. There will be some left after the election, but many of them will be looking for gainful employment once the protest vote dires up.

So glad to hear our Republican House critters are so busy attacking the country's economic problems....

Remember, this is the return of the 19th century we are talking about. Your wife is home pregnant in the kitchen, and you have yourself a little strumpet on the side. The GOP social agenda for women is best summed up in German (no surprise...) Kinder, Küche, Kirche (kids, kitchen, church)

15 lawhawk  Wed, May 25, 2011 11:53:46am

Let's get something clear here - this would affect reproductive rights of all women, because it would affect the medical care being provided to those women who have miscarriages or stillbirth and require medical procedures to remove the stillborn fetus.

The repercussions for this would be quite harmful to all women, not just those seeking abortions.

Asinine.

16 Simply Sarah  Wed, May 25, 2011 11:55:38am

Depressingly, this is, in many ways, probably just piling on. My understanding is that. through various forms of pressure, the number of people with training to perform abortions (Never mind people willing to actually do it) has been decreasing rather constantly. All this would likely do is speed that up a little bit.

He had the courage to oppose crap like this when he was in the Illinois Senate. What are you trying to imply?

Actually, during the 19th century many lower class women worked in factories, as domestics, as seamstresses. Middle class women worked as governesses, shopkeepers, schoolteachers, and farmers.

The idea of women totally not working and staying at home began in the 1950's, when returning vets from WW2 didn't want women competing for their jobs (which were performed by women during the war)

Virginia Foxx

Why was I not surprised to see that she is at an age where, reproductive issues are no longer relevant? I bet she would resent any effort to tamper with gynaecological training as it relates to menopause.

he shouldn't need to get juiced on courage to do what's right...I see no connection....it doesn't take bravery to be principled

I am not implying anything. It seemed pretty clear English to me.

I seriously wonder what deals with the devil the man might make. He has no support from behind in his own cowardly and disorganized party. It may well be that at the moment of truth, he lacks the courage to act.

I hope he does of course.

I know you are correct as a factual issue; however, social attitudes towards women in the 19th century were stringent, and modesty, obedience and reproductive submission were the order of the day.

Yeah, they don't want a government bean-counter there, telling the doctor what he can't and can't do. But a private insurance bean-counter, well that's a "right," by God!

I think Obama respects women too much to do anything other than veto any kind of nonsense such as this.

28 dragonfire1981  Wed, May 25, 2011 12:37:43pm

I really hope one of these GOP guys ends up with a daughter or relative that wants to get an abortion or other reproductive care so they can see firsthand the damage they are causing.

If Roe v Wade isn't unofficially dead its on life support and fading fast.

I am late seeing this since I just got home. This makes absolutely no since unless it is viewed as a hate crime against women. The procedure to perform an elective termination is called a suction dilation and curetage. It is the EXACT same procedure used to treat a miscarriage. If you interfere with teaching Ob/Gyn residents how to perform this, you effectively end safe treatment for one of the most common medical problems all sexually active women in the childbearing years will face. They need to think of all the women in their lives. Women used to die from simple miscarriages all the time. Do they really want to go back to this?

That was interesting. My views on religiosity and torture probably didn't have the correlation you were going for here. Oh wells.

A couple of the questions were messed up. The rating of "how religious are you" went from extremely religious to extremely religious, hence no place for me to put Extremely Not Religious. Also, Malik and Farid's percentages were 95% when they should have been 95% and 0%.

Do I want to sign a non-torture petition? NOOOOOOO!
