So how many here of the age to associate the E-Street band with high school? Man I feel old.

Rest in Peace, indeed.

Aw, shit...Big Man is gone. I saw him play with the Grateful Dead on several occasions.

Oh man, I remember seeing Bruce and the E-Street Band when I was only 9 here in New Jersey, they were amazing. May he rest in peace.

Here he is in 89 with Jerry for an AIDS benefit.

When I was at the NBA Finals recently, he was scheduled to perform the national anthem before one of the first two games in Miami. He was cancelled at the last minute with no reason given. Had he been able to perform, that may have been his last public performance.

RIP "Big Man."

A solo with the E Street band

11 albusteve  Sat, Jun 18, 2011 5:59:04pm

not too many primo R/R sax players around anymore in the King Curtis mold...Bobby Keys, Lenny Pickett, some others

Gotta love his sax in Rosalita. And Bruce giving it up for him @5:30 "King of the World...Master of the Universe....More Powerful than a Locomotive..."

That sure is nicer than some of the singers we hear.

butchering the anthem nowdays is cool...nobody wants to sing it straight up, they need to fuck it up with their blues/gospel/hip hop shit

17 JRCMYP  Sat, Jun 18, 2011 7:11:39pm

I was hoping he would beat the odds. What a loss.

And yes, high school for me too. In fact, when I had my first son 10 years ago I found myself signing not lullabies, but Bruce songs, while rocking my infant at 2am.

Agreed!
It was straight-up, no butchering for effect - beautiful.

That's too bad. Heard about him having had a stroke earlier this week. RIP Big Man.

stroke is devastating...anything other than an extremely minor one and his playing days are over...a stroke will really fuck you up...I'd rather die than survive a major incident

Yeah. It's like a short story. Plus it reminds me of an era gone by. New Jersey and all that stuff. Although offered the chance a few times I never made it to the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.

Condolences Charles. Always tough to hear of great artists' passing. A void is always left in the wake of such a thing.

Not necessarily.

My mom's stroke was pretty major, but after 3 months in ICU and 6 months of rehab, she had 90% mental and 70% physical recovery. We had her for another 7 years before a heart attack took her. (the cost of this... is why I supported Health Care Reform. Even with good insurance, there's just no way middle-class people could ever hope to pay that tab.)

90 and 70 recovery are not major...stroke severity is measured by the result

Clarence Clemons. He did beat the Odds.
He will be remembered fondly in our hearts.
That is what heaven is all about.

I wore out two 8-tracks of "Born to Run". I am seriously bummed.

Listening to Jungleland right now.

RIP, Big Man.

35 Lidane  Sat, Jun 18, 2011 9:18:09pm

Rest in Peace, Big Man. Sorry to see you go. :(

And Clarence Clemons had just reached a new generation. He played on Lady Gaga's new song "The Edge of Glory" and was in the video:

36 William of Orange  Sun, Jun 19, 2011 5:02:48am

No pun intended... but this blows!

The last contribution to a chart topping track is Lady GaGa's track "on the edge with you."

[Link: www.youtube.com...]

My condolences to his family and all members of the E Street Band.

37 William of Orange  Sun, Jun 19, 2011 5:03:27am

Oops, that feels stupid, just below Lidane's message.

Had to visit this thread. Was out last night when I got the news. Karaoke bar did huge tribute. So fucking sad. He was a great one.
