I would feel sorry but I just got back from girls' camp where I stood in the pouring rain teaching the girls to make foil dinners. Kind of.
I was the only one who knew how to fold a foil dinner, so I'm standing in the pouring rain repeatedly folding aluminum foil for these 12 year olds, trying to convince them that they would want more than four potato slices and a little pepper.

Your loss, buddy.
The IV chord is actually, in the simplest mechanisms of diatonic relationships, at the greatest distance from I. In terms of the [descending] circle of fifths, it leads away from I, rather than toward it." Thus the progression I-ii-V-I (an authentic cadence) would feel more final or resolved than I-IV-I (a plagal cadence. Goldman,[4] concurs with Nattiez, who argues that, "the chord on the fourth degree appears long before the chord on II, and the subsequent final I, in the progression I-IV-viio-iii-vi-ii-V-I," and is farther from the tonic there as well.
Or, if you prefer:

If rock ‘n’ roll were a sport. . . . it would have to be hockey. Volatile, lyrical, relentlessly aggressive. This connection took hold upon seeing The Rolling Stones completely rip up Maurice Richard Arena. Hard-hitting, feisty and fearless in their first ever concert in Canada, end of April 1965, two weeks after my team got knocked out early in the Memorial Cup playoffs. The Beatles at the Forum, Dylan at Back Bay, The Doors at the Whisky, Hendrix in Central Park with the Rascals, Led Zeppelin at the Casino, The Who at the Rock Pile, Pink Floyd at Le Centre Sportif, Black Sabbath at Winterland, Aerosmith at Wolman Rink. . . . And later, right while we’re shooting Slap Shot who should roll into town? Springsteen and the E
Street Band to play a one-night stand at our Johnstown War
Memorial, the Chiefs home arena. One Saturday night I coaxed my teammate Reg Dunlop (51 years young) into Lower Manhattan and CBGB’s to see and hear some brand new music. While the Ramones rattled the walls Reggie grinned from ear to ear and gleefully shouted “This is what we’re doing every day on the ice.”
Newman. Ultimate Punk with a heart of rowdy, unbounded generosity. Lead singer and gang leader with giving hands of perpetual cool, Paul never wavered in his delight with Slap Shot, maintaining his experience was “the most fun I ever had making a movie — absolutely!”
Braden’s striptease is pure rapture. Inspired by the very early Elvis, it launched a vividly delicious riff that continues to come in handy every day of my life.
Mischief, magic, monkey-business, mayhem. Thank you George, Nancy, Ned, the Hansons, all the original Chiefs.
Jonathon Jackson has provided a timeless back beat. Rock steady bass coupled with a mighty set of drums. Jackson has doggedly assembled the boards, fastened the glass, skated some extra miles to flood hard ice in his kick-ass rink. Let’s put on the foil. Drop the friggin’ puck.

The GOP evolution: From hawks to bean counters
It was hard to miss, even if you weren't looking for it. The Republican Party -- once identified and driven by its hawks -- was morphing into a party driven by its bean counters.
The party that had accused Democrats of being soft on national security for decades was suddenly the party that wants out of Afghanistan yesterday -- and isn't so sure we ought to have gone into Libya in the first place.
Four years ago, Ron Paul was the odd man out when he said, at CNN's GOP debate in New Hampshire, that "the sooner we come home (from Iraq), the better. ... It was a mistake to go, so it's a mistake to stay." Three days ago, at this year's version of the same CNN event, Paul was no longer an outlier -- and even told us, after the debate, that he felt more in touch with his own party this time around.
And he is. None other than Mitt Romney suggested that it's time for us to bring our troops home "as soon as we possibly can" from Afghanistan. Sure, he gave a nod to the importance of getting advice from the commanders in the field, but he hastened to also say, "we've learned that our troops shouldn't go off and fight a war of independence for another nation."
So what has happened here?

Sounds like the Obama impersonator continued his tacky and offensive schtick when talking about Republicans, and got in trouble with his clients. Over at The Atlantic, Ta-Nehisi Coates reports:
Unfortunately Brown's comedy took a dark and offensive turn.
Of GOP frontrunner, fake Obama joked that Mormon Mitt Romney will have "a first lady, second lady, and third lady." Boos ensued.
He said Tim Pawlenty was out having his "foot surgically removed from his mouth." "John King served him up a ball softer than Barney Frank's backside," he said.
The audience was silent.
Fake Obama began to make fun of Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), but then he was suddenly ushered off stage.
An apologetic Brown later apologized to conference organizers, promising next time to stick watermelon and food stamp jokes. Thus assured that Brown would no longer resort to ugly stereotypes, organizers reinstated his country club pass.

Stray Dogs Master Complex Moscow Subway System
Yes, some of Moscow's stray dogs have figured out how to use the city's immense and complex subway system, getting on and off at their regular stops. The human commuters around them are so accustomed to it that they rarely seem to notice.
"In Moscow there are all sorts of stray dogs, but... there are no stupid dogs," Dr. Andrey Poyarkov, a biologist who has studied Moscow's strays for 30 years, told ABC News.
As many as 35,000 stray dogs live in Russia's capital city. They can be found everywhere, from markets to construction sites to underground passageways, scrounging for food and trying to survive.
Taking the subway is just one of many tactics the strays have come up with for surviving in the manmade wilderness around them.
"The street is tough and it's survival of the fittest," says Poyarkov. "These clever dogs know people much better than people know them."

yeah, I do recall...I saw a couple classic Santana gigs...outdoors at Eastern Mich U they started to pound out Soul Sacrifice while a violent Tstorm was moving in...faster, faster, they played furious as the storm broke over the stadium...the a crash and all the power went down...but just seconds later it came back on and in this terrific thunder and lightning black sky, windy, violent downpour Santana picked right back up and soldiered on pinding out the rest of the song and just about the time their jam ended the wind died and the sun came back out...just one hell of a R?R memory...biblical
Reminds me of Pink Floyd at Rice Stadium in 1994. How fitting that the last song was "Run Like Hell." I will never forget running back to my car while it was POURING!!!

Obama's Puerto Rico visit spurs anger, discontent
President Barack Obama may have been in Puerto Rico for only four hours, but his brief fundraising visit has unleashed a growing political furor in this U.S. Caribbean territory.
Legislators of Puerto Rico's pro-statehood ruling party say they are resentful that he swooped in to raise about $1 million and did not offer any help or solutions as the island battles a soaring crime rate and higher unemployment compared with any U.S. state.
One legislator threatened to derail one objective of the president's June 14 visit: to woo Hispanic voters on the mainland in his quest for re-election.
Local Sen. Melinda Romero, a delegate of the island's chapter of the Democratic Party, said she has demanded an apology from Obama and will travel to the U.S. next week to meet with Puerto Rican leaders in key states including Florida and New York.
"The President did not bring anything to the table," she said in a statement issued late Friday. "His visit only served to take away dollars, just like they take away our young people to war."
She also demanded that he return the money raised.
Thanks for your money....now off to the golf course!

Mara Hvistendahl is worried about girls. Not in any political, moral or cultural sense but as an existential matter. She is right to be. In China, India and numerous other countries (both developing and developed), there are many more men than women, the result of systematic campaigns against baby girls. In "Unnatural Selection," Ms. Hvistendahl reports on this gender imbalance: what it is, how it came to be and what it means for the future.
In nature, 105 boys are born for every 100 girls. This ratio is biologically ironclad. Between 104 and 106 is the normal range, and that's as far as the natural window goes. Any other number is the result of unnatural events.
Yet today in India there are 112 boys born for every 100 girls. In China, the number is 121—though plenty of Chinese towns are over the 150 mark. China's and India's populations are mammoth enough that their outlying sex ratios have skewed the global average to a biologically impossible 107. But the imbalance is not only in Asia. Azerbaijan stands at 115, Georgia at 118 and Armenia at 120.
What is causing the skewed ratio: abortion. If the male number in the sex ratio is above 106, it means that couples are having abortions when they find out the mother is carrying a girl. By Ms. Hvistendahl's counting, there have been so many sex-selective abortions in the past three decades that 163 million girls, who by biological averages should have been born, are missing from the world. Moral horror aside, this is likely to be of very large consequence.

Crows Have Human-Like Intelligence, Author Says
Savage's book, Crows: Encounters with the Wise Guys of the Avian World (October 2005), explores the burgeoning field of crow research, which suggests that the birds share with humans several hallmarks of higher intelligence, including tool use and sophisticated social behavior.
The shared traits exist despite the fact that crows and humans sit on distinct branches of the genetic tree.
Humans are mammals. Crows are birds, which Savage calls feathered lizards, referring to the theory that birds evolved from dinosaurs.

So I was watching on of those shows, ya know, the "caught on tape" ones. So this old man bought some scratch off tickets at a convenience store, moved to the side of the counter and started playing. He had some money hanging out of his pocket and a would be robber thought he had an easy day. 3 problems:
1. The old man was an ex-Marine. (actually you are always a Marine)
2. Old man was an Iron worker.
3. Old man was a Golden Glove champ in boxing.
He beat this whipper snapper to a pulp. Had I been there, I couldn't have helped because I would have been laughing so fucking hard. Was awesome!!

The PaulBots are busy swarming MSNBC again, tired of it. They think statements like "If Paul abolished the federal reserve and headed us back to the gold standard no one knows what would really happen, but has anything that the establishment politicians have tried worked anyway?" are going to sway people to vote for Paul?
I call this the "Vague" campaign after reading through many of their comments, they aren't saying they agree with Paul or even to have a clue what would happen if his policies were enacted. Instead they are saying, "Hey dude vote for Paul, it can't get much worse anyway."

(Boat + Water) *(Beer + Women) = Could be much fun.
(Boat + Water) * (Bait + Gear + Fish) = Good eatin'.

Paul's good ideas are so out weighed by his kookiness. Remember the phrase: It only takes one "Awe Shit to wipe out a buncha "Atta Boy's". At one point (I don't remember specifics) I liked about 80% of what he had to say, but the other 20% was just fucked up.

They have been open a month. Now, people on Craig's List are starting to post stuff about the management and owners. This is the local rock stations annual fest. 2 stages, a dozen bands, and it goes all day. When it started out it was almost entirely made up of new artists, which I really liked, now it's changed to just a few new groups and the rest is mainstream bands. They've been doing it for ~15 years. We've hit them all but just a couple where I was out of town. Live music is one of my favorite things in the world. I'm lucky enough to have a wife who enjoys it enough to play along and has a marketing job that usually ends up getting us free tix. We'll hit at least 6 shows over the summer.

We have a place in St. Pete called Jannus Landing. It is basically a courtyard. I didn't get to see Pearl Jam there when they played. Best place ever to see a show. That's what happens when you politicize a murder trial run by a bunch of snake like attorneys and one very stupid judge and prosecuting attorney. Yeah, it was all about Mark Fuhrman in the end. For the most part. What a fricking circus that was. Not including the fecked up riot that was a part of it.

TPM has the full video of the Obama impersonator....
Fun Times at the Republican Leadership Conference
It's already the talk of the life-deprived political world. Down at the Republican Leadership Conference today an "Obama" impersonator was part of the festivities. And when he came up on stage it got so bad with questionably appropriate jokes that the organizers of the conference themselves escorted him from the stage before he could finish his act.
Video after the jump ...
I think the lefties are missing the real story here. He was pulled off stage because he was making fun of the Republican candidates. His set was pretty balanced but the wingnuts can't take a joke.

Yep...it appears his jokes were on the racial side and that's part of what got him yanked off the stage (it's okay to be racist, just don't let people say you're racist):
He proceeded to tell a series of off-color jokes poking fun at Obama’s biracial heritage and a gay member of Congress.
A sampling of the racial jokes:* On Black History Month: "Michelle celebrates the full month. I celebrate half."
* My mother loved a black man," but "she was not a Kardashian."
...snip...
But the real offensive stuff was when he talked about Republicans:
• Of Tim Pawlenty’s decision not to criticize Mitt Romney at Monday’s debate: “[CNN’s] John King served him up a ball softer than Barney Frank’s backside.”• Of Newt Gingrich’s approval ratings: Dropping “faster than Anthony Weiner’s pants in an AOL chat room.”
• There was also one moment where the original Weiner twitpic was shown on the large screens on either side of the impersonator, with no blurring.
NO BLURRING! THEY COULD ALL SEE HOW HUGE WEINER'S WEINER WAS! OMFG!!11ty!

Sam Kinison was from the same state as Rick Perry. Make of that what you will. Bill Hicks, too.
Also, the most simultaneously hilarious, horrifying, and vicariously mortifying thing I've ever heard in my life was an interview of Jessica Hahn on the Howard Stern show wherein she told an allegedly true story involving blackout-drunk Sam Kinison, voluminous feces, and a hypothetical hotel maid who probably still has PTSD as a result.

I almost forgot Jon Stewart on Foxnews sunday. I had to rewind and I missed the first couple of minutes but he and wallace (?) are really going at it.
One thing I like about Stewart is that his fans will post the video within minutes of the actual appearance, so I don't have to give Fox the viewer.
And I suspect that Wallace and he will get into it. Stewart has mentioned how far the apple fell from the tree on more than one occasion.

And Wallace will accept that, knowing that most of his audience doesn't realize that Stewart has yet again illustrated that a "news network" is comparing itself to a 1/2 hour comedy show. Fox gives the "whole story" (or so Fox thinks) and the Daily Show doesn't. Watch for Stewart to point this out tomorrow night.

Yeah, they're nuts. They keep blaming Prop. 13 but that's another load of BS. I guess they do it to save the environment or something. //
Prop 13 has a small but definite impact on housing prices. The real problem in the Bay Area is that developers have been allowed to build without having to build low and moderate income housing. This has been an eternal struggle. The current mayor, Gavin Newsom, has been tight with the developers, as have the previous mayors. The real, honest-to-gosh progressives on the council have tried to get-- and been somewhat successful-- developers to be forced to build some low and middle income (read, not luxury apartments) housing when they're granted permissions to build.
The flip side to that is that the big residential districts, out in the Sunset and the Richmond, are resistant to building apartment buildings and other such stuff-- some NIMBYism there. There's a lot of arguments pro and con, but as a result a lot of the low and middle income housing winds up being in the Tenderloin and other less desirable parts of the city.

My experience in the Bay Area has been with The Ridge near Wildcat regional park. We have "lower" housing units available but in the end it turned into a luxury golf course community to lower both lower the environmental impact while providing a return for the developers. So in that case it was much like Sunset and Richmond that you mention where lower cost housing is replaced by luxury housing in order to reduce whatever perceived impact there might be on the surrounding environs.
It is a well known fact that curtailing housing development results in higher housing costs all across the board. In other words it reduces the supply of housing making housing more expensive much like commodities. Another thing to consider is that the cost of building affordable housing has also sky rocketed over the years which greatly reduces investor returns. You can make more money building luxury housing. No one is building those "cheapo" apartment projects we used to see back in the 70s. And that's where lower income people still live in metro areas.
522 | Obdicut Sun, Jun 19, 2011 9:39:23am |
re: #520 Gus 802
Yep. A lot of the problem-- which has no solution-- is the seismic tolerance that housing has to have in the Bay Area. This means that any building project has a chunk of cost built into it already that doesn't scale. So, it's better to build luxury apartments on the same square footage, because you get a higher return for the outlay you had to make on the seismic tolerance.
Obviously, we can't just say "Well, for the poor buildings, make 'em shaky". We can't allow buildings that are just going to fall down in an earthquake. But that means developers really do have to be forced to build low and middle income housing, because it's definitely not in their best economic interests to do so.
I'm in favor of a proposal my old friend Quintin Mecke had, which was to convert office space downtown to housing. The buildings have been seismically retrofitted already, and there's quite a bit of unused office space-- and lot of businesses in SF are a net loss to the city in economic terms, anyway.
There's more that can be done with the warehouses etc. too.

This development is being built just a few blocks away from me an I think it's pretty cool. Micro homes go up by macro builder
The micro-homes are just 364 to 687 square feet of living space using reclaimed materials. They're designed for a specific demographic."Anyone who is wanting to commute ,anybody who wants to be in the city, but not necessarily smack downtown," said Hawk.
With no garages, the village is filling a niche for those who prefer two wheels instead of four. The first ten buyers will get a free bike.
"An electric bike, and helmet, the whole package in their home to make it really work for them," said Gretchen Wagner with Kalkhoff bikes in the Pearl District.
....
Division 43 will be finished in July. Units start at $120,000 to $185,000
For a single person or young couple it's an affordable starter home. Here's their website: [Link: www.drhorton.com...]
My concern is the "no car" concept is a little unrealistic. People who buy those homes are going to have cars and since they haven't accounted for parking in their development plans that means street parking is going to become a problem for a few blocks in every direction.

That too. Which I was just thinking about. There are a lot of naturally occurring requirement on buildings in this seismic hazard zone. Years ago they would have essentially "built anything" where as now, logically, they have to build according to code which means a seismically resistant building. Then you have water constraints which has a smaller yet noticeable impact on development.
In the end it is going to be a serious problem though since labor will not longer be able to afford the cost of living in the Bay Area. This is already happening. It's basically the "Aspenization" of the Bay Area and it's been evolving over the past 20 years with no relief in sight.

Yup, they're condos.
That's what it looked like. The no-car concept could work. I remember when I first lived in the Bay Area I didn't have a car which was a matter of practicality. Being in my late 20s made that easy. Not sure if we could compare the convenience of say San Francisco to Portland but it might be there if it's near a lot of shops and stores. It could be a niche market so don't expect a lot of "diversity" in such a development. Right now the rage is for Millennials or Gen-Y. I know that raises some hair with some people. Not my cup of tea but I will work on such projects since it pays the bills.

That's smart as hell.
Quintin is a great guy. He's an honest civil servant and politician. He really is. I worked on his mayoral campaign-- I think he got like 5% of the vote-- but he really deserves to be mayor. He really, truly, wants to help people.
For a long time he worked for the homeless shelter program in San Francisco, on the basis that if we're spending the money to do this, we ought to do it well, and not just have it be a political talking point. Newsom hates his guts.
Here's the kind of guy Newsom is: When he wanted to seem like he was good to the homeless, he went about it by finding a shelter that had a lot of long-term occupants, turfing them out on the street, and then refurbishing the facility so it looked new and inviting the press in. The great part? This was a shelter that tended to have the older residents, 50 and up. He threw elderly homeless people out on the street so he could claim there were free beds.

Oh brother. And Gov. Butch Otter is a Republican. Idaho a Chinese state? What are they nuts?
Nevermind...

E-coli! Some kid is a coma from that. Was in the news just recently.
More likely: cyclospora and liver flukes. PRO TIP: South American farmers making $7/day don't care where they shit.

Instead of RINO, there should be NRE: Not Republican Enough.
Heh, I'm acronymy today.

You're being overly judgmental. Not every person who says stuff like 'government should fear the people' and express xenophobic conspiracy theories is a total nutter. Maybe 96% of them. But not every single one.

Yeah, it seems the wingnuts are serious about abandoning the Reagan legacy. I hope they enjoy keeping company with Code Pink and ANSWER.

They'll do it too because they follow Drudge like he's a God of some sort. I love it. Still funny after these few years of watching. Drudge still defines the movement.

It's interesting watching the full set. The wingnuts were the butt of the joke and I'm pretty sure the comedian designed his set that way intentionally.
I've said at ABL that Brown punked the conservative bigots. I hope he does it again, too. It's not that hard to do, especially around anti-Black sentiment. It's their Achilles's heel, their only answer to which is nonsense like "party of lincoln", "robert byrd" and now in 2011, "herman cain". So why not poke at it and make it hurt?

True. I imagine Siberia was a pretty intellectually lively place in its day, what with all the exiled politicians and artists and scientists and all.
In Fresno, the most exciting thing that ever seems to have happened is the day one of my dad's cousins got swept away on a raft in an irrigation canal and almost drowned.
Or, going back further, the shameful but funny episode in which my great-grandfather attempted to join the Klan and chickened out.

Good thing he chickened out. That would have been one strange legacy that's for sure.
Don't know about Fresno but Bakersfield was a strange place. Seemed like an angry place.

"Chinese Idaho" is a theme pushed by Rev Bill Turner, of the American Patriot Church and a couple other organizations. He is one of the network of RWs who were watching Anthony Weiner's electronic traffic as the "bornfreecrew".
