GOP Stops New Hampshire Planned Parenthood from Dispensing Contraceptives

The Republican Party’s total war on women’s rights
US News • Views: 29,797

In the latest Republican Party move to strip away women’s rights, the New Hampshire GOP has rejected a contract with Planned Parenthood that would allow them to continue dispensing contraceptives: Centers stop dispensing birth control.

The six Planned Parenthood centers in New Hampshire stopped dispensing contraception last week after the Executive Council rejected a new contract with the organization.

Planned Parenthood had operated under a limited retail pharmacy license that was contingent on having a state contract, said Steve Trombley, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. Two weeks ago, the all-Republican Executive Council voted 3-2 against a new contract that would have provided the organization $1.8 million in state and federal money for the two years starting this month.

Executive Councilor Dan St. Hilaire of Concord, who cast one of the three votes in opposition, said the contract should go to an organization that does not perform abortions. The councilors approved 10 other contracts for family planning services.

The Planned Parenthood contract, which accounts for about 20 percent of its annual New Hampshire budget, would have paid for education, distributing contraception, and the testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. The organization’s abortion practice is paid for by private donations, Trombley said, with audits ensuring no public money is used.

Last year, Planned Parenthood provided contraception for 13,242 patients in New Hampshire, Trombley said. The organization also provided 6,112 breast exams, 5,548 screenings for cervical cancer and 18,858 tests for sexually transmitted infections. If the contract is not renewed, Planned Parenthood will drastically reduce its services, Trombley said. The organization employs 80 people in New Hampshire.

Planned Parenthood treats 52 percent of patients whose care is subsidized by the New Hampshire state family planning program, Trombley said. It provides its services on a sliding scale based on income, with 70 percent of patients paying nothing or near nothing for birth control pills because they earn less than 150 percent of the federal poverty line. The federal poverty guidelines vary with the number of people in a household, with a single person qualifying at $10,890 per year and a family of four qualifying at $22,350 a year.

At the Planned Parenthood center in West Lebanon yesterday, Laura Caravella arrived to pick up her patient file to bring it to a physician. Caravella, a 25-year-old paraprofessional at an elementary school in Vermont, had tried to refill her birth control prescription last Friday and learned she could not.

She said she was concerned about the cost of her prescription without the sliding scale offered by Planned Parenthood.

“Financially it’s really stressful,” Caravella said. “I’m already living almost paycheck to paycheck as it is.”

Unbelievably disgusting behavior from the Republican Party, as usual; punishing the most vulnerable members of society to serve a religious fundamentalist agenda. This isn’t about abortion. It’s about controlling women.

Not just a war on women, but a war on poor women who rely on Planned Parenthood for services they can't otherwise afford. No, not crack whores which is what the GOP would have you believe.

Essentially the GOP does not believe in any type of social contract. You're on your own. Pay your taxes and they'll give it all to the Pentagon for war material and that's about it. Forget contraception for the poor, education, astronomy, science, energy research and development, unemployment insurance, health care, etc. It's all about social Darwinism and Randian objectivity -- an irony that is not lost on me.

Well, one can certainly see the parallels. While the ruling class elites always get what they so desire. In the case of Iran behind closed doors. Here, not so much. In New Hampshire -- and elsewhere in this country -- those elites will always have access to contraception regardless of impositions placed upon them by the government class. This is especially true with abortion since these elites would have access to abortion regardless of law. I am reminded a bit of the Soviet Union here.

Renowned economic Geller praises Bush's economy, bemoans rising healthcare costs....
Choking to Death

Just how powerful is the media's influence? Incalculable. When George Bush was president and the economy was chug chug, chuggin' along, the unemployment rate was 4.6% and the media was in full destruct mode. The horror of the unemployment rate. The outrage at the war in Iraq ....well, you know the rest.

Here we are painfully laboring under Obama's "leadership" (but not yet suffering the full effect of Obama's war on America; the worst is yet to come) and the Eva Braunish media continues to activate, propagandize and cover for the dastardly actions of the most dangerous man to ever occupy the White House.
...
The same day that the unemployment figures were released, I received notice from my health insurer that they have submitted a request for a rate increase to the New York State Insurance Department (there's a government department for everything).

They seek a 22% increase. Mind you, my premiums went up 36% after Obamacare was passed. And I don't even use my healthcare. I have a deductible that would choke a horse just to keep my monthly premiums manageable. And if there had to be universal healthcare (which I do no believe in), it should have covered only catastrophic health costs.

Where to start. Healthcare costs have been rising almost exponentially since 2000. Salaries have been stagnant for decades. The economic collapse (i.e. bubble, etc.) began in earnest in 2008 leading to the final meltdown which occurred in October of 2008. Notice the dates so far. A lot of this was exacerbated by the events that unfolded on September 11, 2001. Now, I don't blame Bush either. Many if not most of the economic turmoil is because of events taking place well outside the control of any American president. Oh, and don't forget that their belief of religious freedom extends only to members of their faith.

As for, for example, Islamic faiths? Let's go down the list of proposed laws from people like Bryan Fischer:

1. Deny new citizenship to all Muslims.
2. Deny any Muslim the right to immigrate into the U.S.
3. Revoke the visas of any current foreign national Muslims, and deport them immediately.
4. Stop admission of all Muslims into the US Military.
5. Any Muslim citizens who do not reject their religion are to be "sequestered".

Also, Fischer has stated that the US Constitution does not apply to Muslims, as the founders wrote the document specifically for Christians.

This isn’t about abortion. It’s about controlling women.

That's been the entire motive of the incorrectly named "pro-life" movement from the beginning.

It's not about babies or "protecting the unborn" and it sure as hell isn't about saving women's lives. It's about controlling a woman's body and controlling her sexuality. Always has been, always will be.

The Founding Fathers and IslamYour text to link...
Library Papers Show Early Tolerance for Muslim Faith

In his seminal Letter on Toleration (1689), John Locke insisted that Muslims and all others who believed in God be tolerated in England. Campaigning for religious freedom in Virginia, Jefferson followed Locke, his idol, in demanding recognition of the religious rights of the "Mahamdan," the Jew and the "pagan." Supporting Jefferson was his old ally, Richard Henry Lee, who had made a motion in Congress on June 7, 1776, that the American colonies declare independence. "True freedom," Lee asserted, "embraces the Mahomitan and the Gentoo (Hindu) as well as the Christian religion."

In his autobiography, Jefferson recounted with satisfaction that in the struggle to pass his landmark Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom (1786), the Virginia legislature "rejected by a great majority" an effort to limit the bill's scope "in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan." George Washington suggested a way for Muslims to "obtain proper relief" from a proposed Virginia bill, laying taxes to support Christian worship. On another occasion, the first president declared that he would welcome "Mohometans" to Mount Vernon if they were "good workmen" (see page 96). Officials in Massachusetts were equally insistent that their influential Constitution of 1780 afforded "the most ample liberty of conscience … to Deists, Mahometans, Jews and Christians," a point that Chief Justice Theophilus Parsons resoundingly affirmed in 1810.

re: #71 Lidane

That's been the entire motive of the incorrectly named "pro-life" movement from the beginning.

It's not about babies or "protecting the unborn" and it sure as hell isn't about saving women's lives. It's about controlling a woman's body and controlling her sexuality. Always has been, always will be.

Truth.

Just look in the mirror and repeat the words "Judeo-Christian tradition" 100 times. Hey. Which reminds me. With all this talk of Judeo-Christian from these people how come there are no Jewish candidates in the Republican field? Nor are there any well known Jewish political leaders in the USA speaking for the Republican Party and using the Talmud as a basis for government policy as they so frequently do with the Bible.

A quick exercise:
In the list of proposals that I quoted, replace the terms "Muslim and Islam" with "Jew", and suddenly those statements seem eerily familiar.

75 Gus  Sun, Jul 10, 2011 12:50:16pm

Adding to the comedy of the "Judeo-Christian" rhetoric from the right is the fact that the vast majority of American Jews still vote Democratic and lean left. And we also have this recent news:

Poll: Obama still enjoys high approval rate among US Jews

Gallup says US president's Mideast speech not as detrimental to his presidential campaign as believed

WASHINGTON – A Gallup poll released Tuesday revealed that the majority of American Jews are staying true to US President Barack Obama.

The survey found that contrary to recent reports suggesting the Jewish community's support in the American president may be slipping since his Mideast policy speech in May, the majority of Jewish American will not transfer their support from the Democrats to the Republicans during the 2012 presidential campaign.

Gallup derived that in June, 60% of the Jewish community in the US still supported Obama – down from 68% in May, but statistically unchanged from 64% in April....

Perhaps scholastically but not in practice. It's simply lip-service and a feeble attempt from the right to co-opt the Jewish community in the USA in an attempt to get votes. It's largely cynical in use.

Ayep, the GOP signed off on debt ceiling increases time and time again when the debt was being run up by tax cuts, war expenses, and a new prescription drug program. But the White House proposes increased spending to get us out of an economic rut and suddenly, we're acquired too much debt and simply must throw the baby out with the bathwater, lest the spending continues unabated.

Tough line: US suspends military aid to Pakistan

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration's decision to suspend $800 million in aid to the Pakistan's military signals a tougher U.S. line with a critical but sometimes unreliable partner in the fight against terrorism.

President Barack Obama's chief of staff, William Daley, said in a broadcast interview Sunday that the estranged relationship between the United States and Pakistan must be made "to work over time," but until it does, "we'll hold back some of the money that the American taxpayers are committed to give" to the country's powerful military forces.

The suspension of U.S. aid, first reported by the New York Times, followed a statement last week by Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, that Pakistan's security services may have sanctioned the killing of Pakistani journalist Saleem Shahzad who wrote about infiltration of the military by extremists. His battered body was found in June.

From lunatic Pam Geller:

There is a holy war being waged against G-d in America - not against Allah, of course. Despite the relentless gains Islamic supremacists have made in imposing Islamic law on the public square, non-Muslims have enjoyed no such privileges. Quite the contrary: Non-Muslims are being forbidden to even invoke the word G-d.

The irony is that she was writing about a situation in Texas, where the governor is preparing to lead a prayer rally at a football stadium that will be filled with people. Pssst....Pam....no one is going to forbid him from doing so. Politicians talk about God a million times a day. Welcome to reality.

God really hates Lubbock then. It is 103 degrees right now. This is the 34th day this year over 100, including 28 of the last 30 (the previous record for a whole year was 29.) There has still been no measurable precipitation since May 12th. Zero rainfall in June is unprecedented, since June is normally the wettest month of the year. Precipitation still stands at 1.12 inches for the year, annual average at this point is 9.8 inches. The hourlong visit to the low-income Skid Row neighborhood was the start of their last day in Southern California, which will end after an afternoon job fair for U.S. military veterans and their spouses.

Mass. city to pay wedded gay workers to offset tax

Like many people, the 22 school and city workers chose to put heir spouses on their employer-provided health insurance. Because they're in a homosexual relationship, the value of that health coverage is considered taxable income by the federal government.

But starting this month, Cambridge will become what is believed to be the first municipality in the country to pay its public employees a stipend in an attempt to defray the cost of the federal tax on health benefits for their same-sex spouses.

The city employees hit by the extra tax pay an additional $1,500 to $3,000 in taxes a year and officials estimate the stipends would cost the city an additional $33,000.

Yet there are many more like Judge Lacy. Just last week in Houston, the Houston National Cemetery informed veterans, as well as volunteers at the cemetery, they could no longer use the words "G-d" or "Jesus" during funerals or even on condolence cards. Why? Because these words are "offensive."

This is the incident that lying freak is talking about...

Religious Groups Criticize Houston VA for Respecting Families' Wishes

Imagine you are at a funeral for a fallen veteran, possibly your husband or wife or uncle, and cemetery volunteers begin publicly praying to their god despite the fact that your family doesn't share their beliefs.

The nation remembers Richard Tillman, who jumped on stage to stand up for his brother Pat Tillman's wishes. The Veterans Affairs Cemetery Administration protects the family when it restricts the religious speech of volunteers, and volunteers can opt out of funerals where the family has not requested a religious service consistent with the religious interests of the volunteer. Volunteers are given access to funerals to support the family, not to promote personal religious beliefs.

The Houston Chronicle reports that some Christian groups have filed suit against the constitutional policies of the VA cemetery administration:

Enemy pilots, many aces who had years of experience flying against Chinese and American volunteer pilots, flying aircraft that were practically stripped down hotrods. They sure weren't the prettiest of aircraft. The Corsair though was rather nice looking. I understand some pilots had a hard time with the Corsair on carriers because of the long nose. Whoa. This is one rage-inducing story of hate:

Skinheads Hunt Native American Family: Guess Who Gets Arrested?

What. The. Fuck. Here's another story at Forbes...

Did Police Turn a Blind Eye to Attack on Native American Family in Nevada?

When cops arrived they refused to take statements from the victims, only interviewing the three white assailants. An ambulance took Lisa, Alyssa and Murray to the hospital. Police arrested Johnny Bonta even though he was bleeding and barely able to stand and took him back to the local jail. The three attackers, including Jacob Cassell, son of retired Sheriff officer Jim Cassell, were released at the scene.
...
The FBI is looking into the attacks and the Bontas have hired an attorney.

The Sheriff’s office claims the Bonta family pursued the other men and that the fight appeared to be ‘mutual’. They claim the Bontas have not been cooperating with the investigation, and that the article excerpted above is “awfully one-sided”. Given the attackers’ confessions on Facebook, it’s hard to imagine this is true.

And not to sound too old-fashioned, but when a confrontation occurs between three men in their 20’s and a family with a middle-aged man and two women, it’s hard to see how it could have been ‘mutual’ by any stretch of the imagination. Nor is it difficult to grasp why the Bontas aren’t cooperating with police, either, given the circumstances.

Hopefully the FBI investigation goes somewhere. Obviously there are two sides to every story, but those Facebook messages make claims from Dee Cassell, mother of Jacob, ring rather hollow.

Yeah, the Corsair as it originally left the factory was unwelcome on carriers, which is why the Marines were the first to fly them from land bases. Even after Vought made the various modifications the Navy ordered to put them on carriers, they still carried the nickname "The Ensign Eliminator," due to the long nose making ramp strikes more likely for inexperienced pilots.

re: #53 Sergey Romanov

I see Kossacks are freaking out that Jones lost her case against KBR. Here's an interesting article in Mother Jones, of all places, that casts doubt on here claims: [Link: motherjones.com...]

Jones got screwed over legally...big time. I have no idea why her counsel did not file the charges on her false imprisonment originally...and the judge threw them out. The fact ( verified by calls to congressmen and the state department to rescue her) that KBR imprisoned her after the rape complaint (and after losing the rape kit that army investigators turned over to them. Convenient, no? Her lawyers couldn't enter that evidence either.) is the most damning thing about the case.

The Evidence: KBR claims Jones was never imprisoned, and that she encountered no obstacles calling her family after seeking medical treatment. KBR also says that its employees, including security staff, don't carry guns. A 2006 investigation by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) backs up KBR's story that the company placed Jones in a secure location before getting her home to Texas.

This set of disputed facts, however, will not really be hashed out by the jury. The judge threw out Jones' charges that the supposed imprisonment constituted "retaliation" by KBR for reporting the rape, because Jones never mentioned this accusation in her original legal filings with the EEOC. (Federal law requires a plaintiff to exhaust administrative remedies with the EEOC before pursuing a sexual harassment claim in federal court.) The false-imprisonment allegation didn't surface until two years after Jones' original rape complaint, when Jones hired a new lawyer.

TBC...

Yeah. I noticed. I can understand that completely.

278 celticdragon  Sun, Jul 10, 2011 3:27:12pm

Oh really? The State department actually had to send a team to get her out of the shipping container she was confined in.

The rest of the document is intended to further the impression that Jones is the one not telling the truth. In the guise of disputing Jones’ assertions that she was held against her will in a trailer monitored by armed guards and asked to drop her sexual assault case, KBR says the “facts” are that she wasn’t held against her will, was allowed to make phone calls and her father was informed of her whereabouts at all times. They don’t explain why, if this was actually the case, that she called her father asking for help to get out of there, or how the State Department only sent its people to find her after documented intervention by Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX), which was spurred by her father’s phone call. And while KBR asserts that it is a “fact” that Congressman Poe had nothing to do with Jones’ return to the United States, Congressman Poe’s office vigorously disputes that allegation. Congressman Poe’s office confirmed that they have a documented case file going back to Jones’ father’s first conversation with a case worker in July 2005. They insist, and have evidence to back it up, that they were the ones in contact with State Department and stayed that way (helping keep her father informed of her whereabouts) until Jones was returned to the States.

Unbelievable. She was raped.

After she was released, her rape kit, which the Army hospital had turned over to KBR and KBR had turned over to the State Department, disappeared. The Pentagon wouldn’t investigate.

The company "lost" the rape kit and the judge threw out the claim concerning her illegal and coercive detention by the company.

If I were her parent, I would retaliate, and I will just leave it at that.

Of course higher rates of diagnosis will lead to higher rates. Thus poorer countries and/or regions will have lower rates of diagnosis. One thing that's important is that there are varying levels of autism or intensity. People can have autism and live reasonably normal and healthy lives.

That sucks. My next door neighbor is a definite Asberger's guy. He's also a retired O-6 Army tank dude. Hell of a commander. Very withdrawn socially. Warms up to me, as we have similar interests, re: #305 allegro

Recently read that the Asberger's distinction might be abandoned because it gets in the way. That kicked off resistance, some from families made comfortable by it, and some because it clutters up the educational support legalities. The medicine is seriously politicized, and then the antivax BS comes along.

Barely a mist yesterday. Yeah, it's cooler and wetter up here. Are you by the winery? It's pretty down there, I like it.

very close...I love it down here, the heights are like another town altogether and it's pretty at night looking up there

El Niño is just getting started. Might take a couple of more months.

Without a tropical system, we will probably be SOL until September. This year is eerily similar to 2009, when we had a la Nina spring and a developing El Nino summer. Here's Lake Travis, our primary drinking water reservoir, in '09:

Yes, that is 50' below normal. By March 2010, we were above average. Then, on October 1st of 2010, it basically quit raining. And here we sit, withering again.

On March 14th, 2007, at 12:00 AM, Eastern Standard Time, Gravel became self-aware, and immediately declared war on the Penguins.

On July 9th, 2011, at 09:06 AM, Pacific Standard Time, Gravel was deified, forever to be worshiped by the enemies of the Penguins.

That's hot for Philly. I remember South Jersey would get hot during the day time and barely cool down at night. Blech. I'm too used to being in places where it cools down at night. We hit about 100 here a few times and the warmest low we got around here was 62. Pretty much a 40 degree difference. But, I heard this place turns to hell in August. I have to be out of here by then.

Correction: It's about controlling liberal women who can't afford care otherwise, and by November 2012 they will also be denied access to the ballot box.

re: #320 Decatur Deb

Study: Environmental Factors May Be Just as Important as Genes in Autism

Dr. Joachim Hallmayer, a psychiatrist at the Stanford University School of Medicine, and his team report online in the Archives of General Psychiatry that shared environmental influences may account for as much as 55% of autism risk, while less than 40% can be attributed to genes.

The study modeled risk, but did not specify which environmental factors were at play. But other research has implicated increasing maternal and paternal age, low birth weight, multiple pregnancies and any medications or infections to which an expectant mom is exposed during pregnancy.

Oh, and have I mentioned how much I really can't stand anti-vaxers and the people that promote them?
