One problem with Europe is that college-educated professional women are the ones with the lowest birthrates.

They do not ever enter the workforce until their mid-20's and by the time they have established themselves in their careers, they do not have a lot of motivation to drop out and have babies, despite legally mandated three-year unpaid maternity leave.

Birth control the old fashioned way, a cold loveless marriage.

Which reminds me of what was said over at Hot Air "It doesn't cost anything not to fornicate."

You got that married couples?

re: #4 ralphieboy

I'm pretty sure that maternity leave is shorter in Southern Europe.

In fact, the nations with the most safety net (Northern Europe), have basically replacement.

I see a lesson here.

Birth control plans from Breivik, courtesy of PZ Myers' digging:

1. Limit the distribution of birth-control pills (contraceptive pills): Discourage the use of and prevent liberal distribution of contraceptive pills or equivalent prevention methods. The goal should be to make it considerably more difficult to obtain. This alone should increase the fertility rate by 0,1 points but would degrade women's rights.

2. Reform sex education: Reform the current sex education in our school institutions. This may involve limiting it or at least delaying sex education to a later age and discourage casual sex. Sex should only be encouraged within the boundaries of marriage. This alone should increase the fertility rate by 0,1 points.

3. Making abortion illegal: A re-introduction of the ban on abortion should result in an increased fertility rate of approximately 0,1-0,2 points but would strip women of basic rights.

4. Women and education: Discourage women in general to strive for full time careers. This will involve certain sexist and discriminating policies but should increase the fertility rate by up to 0,1-0,2 points.

Women should not be encouraged by society/media to take anything above a bachelor's degree but should not be prevented from taking a master or PhD. Males on the other hand should obviously continue to be encouraged to take higher education - bachelor, master and PhD.

Highly anecdotal, but:
My roommate got back from visiting his parents in Crested Butte on Tuesday, he'd been watching Fox News with his dad and came in and told me "Fuckin' government is paying for birth control!" I says "What's wrong with that?" and we got into this little spat about people being dependent or independent of government blah dee blah blah.

Anyhoo, my roommate really needs to see this video!

Birth control plans from Breivik, courtesy of PZ Myers' digging:

Nothing special, except that, frankly, he's somewhat special among the fuckwads promoting this shit in that he know that he's infringing on women's rights to achieve his goal.

Now, seeing as he's a mass murderer, I don't really need to be this fair, but that's actually kind of nice. At least he's not turning women into second-class citizens in the name of his race war AND pretending that they'll get loads of personal satisfaction out of it, and be much happier than they were when the feminists deluded them into having control over their bodies.

What the anti-fornicators fail to acknowledge is that there are at least two other kinds of "sex" people can have that won't result in pregnancy. They are aware of them, but acknowledging them would ruin the anti-fornication meme.

Anal intercourse was a fairly common form of birth control in Renaissance Europe. The preachers railed against it, and threatened--but with very little effect, it would seem.

In other words, this ain't about gov't spending, gov't health care, "fiscal conservatism", or women's reproductive rights. For them, it's about hating people for having sex in a way that does not fit their very narrow world view. Fucking for Fun is evil, and it must be opposed on every front.

I read a article recently that suggested that men who ejaculate frequently are less likely to contract prostate and/or testicular cancer than those who live a wank-free life, so it could be argued there's an implied cost in *not* ejaculating.

Those folks over at Hot Air -- are they ever right about anything?

For some reason, I'm recalling a scene in "Gorky Park", where Renko is listening to a radio program trying to encourage Russian women to have more children, and predicting a dark future in which the USSR will be 'starved of Russians'.

One nice thing about being an American--if we don't meet our replacement quota, you know what? More people will come from other places, and become Americans, and their kids will carry on!

My inclination would be to say the latter. However, I think there's a lot of personal self interest here in that they believe that this is living according to "the word of God" and if they don't follow those guidelines they're basically screwed when they die. It's sort of like Heaven Insurance™. Live this way and you'll definitely go to heaven and avoid hell. So it's not something they really want to do but do so out of fear.
