NY GOP Peddles ‘Ground Zero Mosque’ Hysteria on the 9/11 Decennial

Dishonest, exploitative, despicable:

New York Republicans have sent out a kitchen-sink mailer in the hotly-contested Queens congressional special election depicting a mosque superimposed over the scarred Ground Zero site on one side, and Democrat David Weprin alongside President Barack Obama on the other.

The front of the flier features a golden-domed mosque rising in front of the demolished World Trade Center site, a shell of metal rising near a photo of Weprin and a quote of his from last September, saying: ‘I support the right of the mosque to build …’

The reverse page is a picture of Weprin juxtaposed against a photo of the president, and text reading: ‘Weprin stands with Obama — and they stand together in support of the mosque at Ground Zero.’

The piece was received by a registered voter in NY-9 in the past week, landing in the days leading up to the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

The mail was sent out as a ‘chaser’ piece alongside the TV spot the Turner campaign released. At the bottom, it encourages voters to ‘go to our website,’ and lists the Turner congressional site. But it says it was paid for by the NY GOP.

Here’s the Turner campaign’s original “Zero” TV Ad which features digitally distorted footage of the burning WTC towers and crassly exploits the 10 year 9/11 anniversary:

Voice-over: “It’s been 10 short years. Everyone remembers. Some though, want to commemorate the tragedy by building a mosque on Ground Zero. President Obama thinks that’s a good idea, and so does congressional candidate Weprin.”

Weprin: “… I support the Right of the mosque to build …”

Voice-over: “Bob Turner says no. He knows Obama and Weprin are wrong. September 13th, send a message. Bob Turner for Congress.”

Turner: “I’m Bob Turner and I approve this message.”

"I'm Bob Turner and I approve this message of shitting all over the Constitutional rights of all Muslims because it's what my party is all about. Do I hear an Amen?"

I love how a Muslim-oriented community center is ominously dubbed the "Ground Zero Mosque," which is neither a mosque nor located at ground zero. Do these people have even a scintilla of shame?

"I'm Bob Turner and I approve of this deceitful bigotry."

No American who believes in what this nation stands for should vote for a candidate who runs such despicable ads.

First part - literally. I will repeat again and again - this bullshit is almost a mirror image of anti-Jewish propaganda in late Tsarist Russia, save for the pogroms.

Sigh. Saddening that people want power so badly they'll stoop this low.

Hateful want to win at any price people. This is disgusting. Oh and how's Pam and Robert's 9-11 commemorative hate fest going I wonder.

Yet another reason to stop supporting the Republican Party. If you still do, why?

And the bigots and xenophobes would have their own all-American, anti-Muslim pograms if they thought they could get away with it...the thing is that most of those same bigots and xenophobes are likely anti-Semites as well.

None. Zero. Nada.

I hope this campaign ploy blows up in this yokel's face. New Yorkers are way smarter than he believes. IIRC, NY-9 was willing to keep Weiner around, but he made the decision to step down. I can't believe the same voters would elect Turner.

i thought there was a memorial at Ground Zero. A very nice one too. So where will they fit the mosque?

So has the Shrieking Harpy endorsed Bob Turner yet?

I'll be the first to say (& I have said it, more than once) that a "Muslim Community center with a prayer room within the blast radius of Ground Zero" sounds as close to a "mosque at Ground Zero" as any sneaky person might want it to, but I'll be damned if I ever say it shouldn't be built. And no, that's not just because I admire Imam Rauf, either! The whole point of America is freedom of religion (ok, maybe I exaggerate - but it's certainly one of the main points!!) - the hypocrites who fight against this should be smacked. The saddest thing is that the useful idiots who fall/vote for evil candidates will NEVER see jut how wrong they are.

I used to be able to distinguish between the loons on the far Right and the GOP in general. It is harder and to do so. (understatement) Now the only GOP Pres candidate I am intrigued with is Huntsman. He is a brave man and I respect his apparent honesty and perceived integrity.

As you may have noted that I qualified my compliments to Huntsman. And it is because I have grown to be cynical when believing anything any politician says.

Even though I have not voted GOP since McCain in 2000 primaries, I still support the GOP. Well, I support the GOP of Buckley. Our Country needs competing views. But they must be honest views and honest debate. Lack of mutual respect is a non starter, The GOP used to be the party of intellect and sober passion for the pursuit of such. That the vast majority of the current GOP seems to abhor those that are driven to learn will be a death sentence for not just the GOP, but for USA as well.

The fight that those that truly believe in this Country must pursue is the battle for education. We have to have better education than our competing nations. But alas, right now we do not.

I think it's still fair to make a distinction between individual candidates and an entire party, else we be guilty of painting everyone with one brush as these ads paint all Muslims as terrorists. I don't know anything about the two candidates in this race, but if a Democrat is in danger of losing a seat in a NYC burough, he must not be much of an alternative.

There's also another Republican-Teabag debate tonight, on CNN. And it is apparently sponsored by the Teabag Party People's Front. Or the People's Front of Teabag. Don't remember which.

At this point, I have two questions:

1. Can Romney actually win the nomination?

2. If he does, and goes on to win the general election, can he, or will he, stem the tide of crazy from sweeping over us?

re: #18 Bulworth

1. If the GOP's latest Great White Hope, Rick Perry, ends up flaming out like I think he will, I think Republicans will hold their noses and support Romney the way they supported McCain in 2008.

2. No.
