USA Today-Gallup Poll: Obama Has Overwhelming Lead Over Romney With Latinos

Latinos reject Mitt Romney in huge numbers
Politics • Views: 29,548

The latest nationwide USA Today-Gallup poll of Latino voters shows that President Obama is absolutely crushing Mitt Romney in this key demographic.

WASHINGTON – President Obama has built an overwhelming lead among Latino voters, a nationwide USA TODAY/Gallup Poll of Hispanics finds, as Republican challenger Mitt Romney faces a difficult path ahead to make inroads among what has been the nation’s fastest-growing ethnic group for a generation.

The president leads Romney 66%-25% among more than 1,000 Latino registered voters surveyed April 16 to May 31, matching his muscular showing in the 2008 election among Hispanics. Romney is in the weakest position among Latinos of any presidential contender since 1996 — and in those intervening 16 years their percentage of the electorate has doubled.

Since the poll was taken, Obama has fortified Hispanic enthusiasm by announcing he would block the deportation of an estimated 800,000 undocumented young Latinos who were brought to the United States as children. In a subsequent USA TODAY/Gallup survey, taken Wednesday-Saturday, more than eight in 10 Latinos approved of the president’s action, most of them strongly.

I'm sure that lead will disappear once the GOP works out the bugs on their Latino outreach website.

Yeah but once Condi joins the ticket Obama is toast.

This is why I think Romney will ultimately lose. Latino voters are a key bloc in many of the battleground states and Romney and his party have gone out of their way to alienate them while Obama and his have done the opposite practically. Of course if Obama ultimately wins due to strong Latino support, we're going to hear cries of fraud because every Latino voter is an illegal.// GOP and right wing have only themselves to blame for how they've regarded Latinos in politics.

I'm sure the wingnuts chanting VICTORY! today isn't going to make friends and influence people. It's a downward spiral for the Republicans, and Romney is unwilling to stop it.

Be nice, 30 year olds are still a bunch of kids compared to the majority of the GOP.

I don't think the Latino vote is going to decide the race. 25% of US voters don't like either candidate. That's a lot of voters.

Poll: 1 in 4 voters uncommitted to either Obama, Romney

Some of the issues to emerge in the campaign so far that directly impact younger, college-age voters include student loan rates, voter ID laws that impact college students, the DREAM Act for undocumented students and a provision in the health care reform bill that allows young people to stay on their parents’ insurance plans until age 26.

The GOP/Romney don't care about student loan rates, are in favor of more restrictive voter ID laws to reduce voting, don't support the DREAM Act, and feverishly oppose the ACA and the age 26 provision.

Also, too: GOP/Romney don't like teh gay all that much.

Otherwise, the youngun's should love 'em. /

The Republican super PAC Crossroads Generation, jointly begun jointly by Karl Rove’s American Crossroads and other Republican youth groups like the College Republicans, released a web video Monday to explain to young Americans how the health care reform law hurts them.

Must not have been a very long video.

I dunno. I just know this much. One party has a candidate who in particular has gone out of his way to alienate Latino voters e.g. "self-deport", hiring a nut like Kobach to be his immigration adviser, and having a lukewarm at best response to the DREAM Act. Bush and McCain I think understood those issues much better than Romney does.

They really are lucky younger voters don't vote more often in elections because if they did, GOP would be weak. That's another story though. Guess the broad point is GOP is hellbent on running socially conservative campaigns that don't resonate with most young voters.

Allowing you to stay on your parents insurance till you're 26 is TYRANNY. The pre-existing conditions provision is also really bad for you because shut up that's why.

Heh I'm reminded what Jonah Goldberg said, "we should beat up young socialists." Because, Jonah Goldberg is so intimidating, that most young people on the left are socialists, and that's the best way to convince someone of the virtues of a free enterprise economy by beating them up. The right doesn't understand young voters because they're by and large unwilling to understand the issues that matter to younger voters.

In the last three general elections - 2004, 2006, and 2008 -- young voters have given the Democratic Party a majority of their votes, and for all three cycles they have been the party's most supportive age group. This year [2008 -me], 66% of those under age 30 voted for Barack Obama making the disparity between young voters and other age groups larger than in any presidential election since exit polling began in 1972.

If you think latinos are seriously going to give the Republican party carte blanche on immigration policy even as right wing media seeks to butress Arpaio's position in Arizona... I don't know what to tell you.

Well, he's right to a degree; Hispanics are somewhat less plentiful in swing states compared to the country as a whole.

Of course, this is an actual plausible reason, rather than the hopeful handwaving presented at #12.

I felt really old a few weeks ago when I realized kids born the year I graduated high school are now old enough to drink.

It's a variation on a long-held method of realizing how different your cultural touchstones are from the current "young adults". (your choice whether young or adult belongs in the scare quotes.)

Pick three defining moments, major cultural touchstones. Then compare them to drinking age or high school graduation/incoming college freshmen, your choice.

For example, I was testing a videorecorder and so happened to get the initial broadcast of the Reagan assassination attempt on tape for my college. For example, I was changing post for CQ at my company in the army when Challenger blew up. For example, I remember when there were no cell phones (and when they were bricks, as well). There are people who've earned master's degrees for whom all three are "before they were born."
