We Are the 15 Percent

A crowd-sourced collection of portraits of American interracial families and marriages, inspired by a Cheerios ad

Beautiful photos—wonderfully positive response to the vicious racism directed at the Cheerios ad earlier this month..

From the site’s About the Project page:

Last week, Cheerios posted this new commercial on youtube. It sparked a firestorm of backlash, and (naturally) the comments on the video have been deactivated.

When my wife and I watched the video, it felt great to (finally) see a representation of our own family. Especially considering what happened at a Wal-Mart in Virginia a few weeks ago.

We created this site to publicly reflect the changing face of the American family. According to the 2008 census, 15% of new marriages are interracial. And yet, it still feels rare to see something like the Cheerios ad represented in mainstream culture. […]

More at We Are the 15 Percent…

I don’t know if everyone has seen this parody “Response to Haters” video, so just in case you missed it…

3 DO WINGNUT WORDS SHOW THEY EVOLVED BRAINS?11!!  Sun, Jun 23, 2013 11:25:30am

I watch HGTV almost every day. These shows usually come in contact with lots of people and couples across the USA (and Canada).
Anyone who watches the channel will see, at any given time, many couples who are not of the same “race”. Never in the years of watching the channel has it ever shocked or concerned me or shocked and concerned anyone else on their website, blogs and forums. Why this commercial and why now?
Do you think maybe, as a joke, Stephen Hawking created a time warp to send us back to 1960 because that would explain a lot!

Yeah. But at the same time, Stephen Hawking is a BAMF. I’m sure Hawking could figure something out.

Come to think of it, how have we not had a Doctor Who Episode with Stephen Hawking?
