Obama: Pot Is ‘A Bad Habit’ That Is No ‘More Dangerous Than Alcohol’

Politics • Views: 23,499

Prepare for a massive RWNJ screechfest:

When Remnick asked whether it was “less dangerous” than cigarettes or alcohol, the president demurred. It is less dangerous, he said, “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer. It’s not something I encourage, and I’ve told my daughters I think it’s a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy.”

Obama then acknowledged the structural inequalities surrounding drug laws in the United States. “Middle-class kids don’t get locked up for smoking pot, and poor kids do,” he said. “And African-American kids and Latino kids are more likely to be poor and less likely to have the resources and the support to avoid unduly harsh penalties.”

He went on to attack the hypocrisy of long sentences handed out to users by laws written by politicians who have likely committed the same crimes. “[W]e should not be locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time when some of the folks who are writing those laws have probably done the same thing,” he said.

No drunk people ever do such things, right Nancy? Actually all sorts of medical studies show MJ with far less propensity to make people violent than alcohol. MJ is actually much more like tobacco in that respect.

Anyway, screw the right wingers who will freak out again that Obama said something they can’t comprehend because it’s still 1965 in their world.

This is what galls me most about contemporary American conservatism. It utterly refuses to accept that change is a natural, unavoidable part of life. And that, as we learn more from scientists, doctors, etc, we should be able to have the flexibility as a society to respond and adapt.

Just as with gay marriage, this issue has split the country in two. 25 states have some sort of legalization/decriminalization/medical marijuana. Not surprisingly, all but a few of those are blue states. Virtually the entire south still has full prohibition of pot. Emblematic of the way the south is most reluctant to embrace any kind of social change.

And an illustration of why I can’t be a conservative, at least not in its contemporary iteration here in the US. Fear of change is fear of life itself.

Anything less than a bloodbath and complete social collapse in Colorado will prove the right wing pot prohibitionists wrong, since that is essentially what they are predicting. We need to hold them to it as the state prospers and crime drops, as I expect it will.

Mona Holland is the definition of a “drooling sycophant.” I saw her claim that Wilentz said Greenwald defended Matt Hale in criminal cases — no, he didn’t write that.

The only way they’re going to be able to claim the piece is riddled with errors is by nitpicking and distorting things that are not errors through deliberate misreading.

These people are such dishonest tools.

Seung-Hui Cho

The investigation panel had sought Cho’s medical records for several weeks, but due to privacy laws, Virginia Tech was prohibited from releasing them without permission from Cho’s family, even after his death.[105] The panel had considered using subpoenas to obtain his records. On June 12, 2007, Cho’s family released his medical records to the panel, although the panel said that the records were not enough.[106][107] The panel obtained additional information by court order.[108] Like the perpetrators of both the Columbine and Jokela school massacres, Cho was prescribed the antidepressant drug Prozac prior to his rampage, a substance suspected by Peter Breggin and David Healy of leading to suicidal behaviors.[109] It is not known if Cho ever complied in filling or taking this prescription; or if he had taken and then discontinued the prescribed medication. The toxicology test from the official autopsy later showed that neither psychiatric nor any kind of illegal drugs were in his system during the time of the shooting.

Time will tell if this man is correct. If so my surprise would be about as strong as our recent rain.

Russia may have helped the former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden to reveal details of surveillance programmes and escape US authorities last year, the chairman of the House intelligence committee claimed on Sunday.
Mike Rogers, a Republican representative from Michigan, interviewed by NBC’s Meet the Press, said Snowden was “a thief whom we believe had some help”, and added that there was an “ongoing” investigation into whether Russia had aided Snowden.
“I believe there’s questions to be answered there,” Rogers said. “I don’t think it was a gee-whiz luck event that he ended up in Moscow under the handling of the [Russian intelligence service] FSB.”

Jebus! The level of stupidity regarding both marywanna laws and spying whistlejournalism blowers is staggering this evening isn’t it? I can’t believe some of the crap the dudebros and potkillers are coughing up. Its hair-ball logic for certain.

Makes you wonder where they get such warped thinking? It does look like not learning any real history is a part of it. No knowledge of spy work and espionage, dirty tricks and dealing between countries friend and foe and no clue to all the history of prohibition and the simple fact that it never works, is not balanced as far as fairness of law, application, punishment, etc.

This country grows more ignorant by the minute. Wondering where the bottom IS AT in all of this is concerning.

It has proved useful to the owners to have a large media market without a team. Very useful as a club when extorting cities/regions to pony up new stadiums and other goodies.

129 ObserverArt  Sun, Jan 19, 2014 6:38:28pm

I caught some of the earlier discussion about Rep Mike Rodgers and Senator Diane Feinstein talking about the NSA and Snowden. However, I may have missed any discussion around LGF about something Feinstein talked about on Meet The Press.

She said something about Snowden using a ‘sweeper’ to collect the data quickly. I do not remember ever hearing of such a tool, which I am guessing is some kind of a software that could be connected to a storage device set to download data files in a “sweep” as to be quick and efficient.

Or, something.

Anyone have any idea what she may have meant, or if there really is such a device/software? I plan on catching a rerun or video of some of MTP later as I wasn’t listening closely this morning.

I have to admit that despite the name of this blog I really don’t care at all about football, never watch it, and don’t want to know about it. There are many things I do want to know about, but football isn’t one.

You used to say (maybe still say) that the reason behind the name of the blog is a secret.

I have a goofy, probably-wrong hypothesis.

You were/are a professional musician. I haven’t bothered to “investigate” your entire career (because I’m not completely insane), but I imagine that you’ve either done some studio gigs, or are at least familiar with the industry. I’ve been around professional musicians all my life, and I’m a somewhat lapsed and half-assed non-professional (and unprofessional) musician myself.

I have been led to believe that among professional studio musicians, a slang term for whole notes is “footballs”. As in, “it was an easy gig, nothing but footballs.” You get to the gig and the piece of music they put in front of you is a not-very-demanding piece, requiring you to play nothing but droning whole notes.

In my crazy hypothesis, “green” is the color of money. So if you are a musician who gets paid by contract to play whole notes, it could be said in a slang-sorta way, that you’re playing “green footballs”. A page full of “little green footballs” would be a piece of music beneath your skills that you are paid to play. Maybe for a mouthwash commercial or something.

My hypothesis falls apart at the point of the website, because I doubt the website is as effortless as a page full of whole notes.

Pro football has pretty well screwed LA over. Since the Rams left anyway.

Perhaps football in LA is like hockey here in Toronto?

We haven’t had a winning team since before I was a teenager. The reason? No matter how bad the team is the stadium is full every single game!

So the owners don’t care a jot for whether the team is any good. In fact they prefer a bad team because poor players don’t cost as much.

It’s a glaring example of one of capitalism’s greatest weaknesses.

Coal train derails in Caledonia; track may have cracked in cold

Cold weather may be to blame for a coal train derailment Sunday morning in the Village of Caledonia that forced authorities to close a road as authorities clean up the scene.

Nineteen cars were involved in the derailment, with no injuries to the engineer or conductor and no release of hazardous substances, Caledonia Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Henningfeld said. Numerous cars were “mangled and destroyed,” he said.

The 135-car coal train originated in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and was headed to the power plant in Sheboygan when the derailment happened around 6 a.m., Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said.
