In Mississippi Runoff Election, Tea Party Nutjobs Plan to “Monitor” for Voting Fraud

Obsessed with a crime that does not exist
Politics • Views: 29,570

You know how Republicans are always raving about “vote fraud,” even though it essentially does not exist? Well, in Mississippi’s runoff election, Tea Party loons are taking this bogus concern to the next level, vowing to send in their own “election monitors” to make sure nobody tries to commit this nonexistent crime — but Mississippi officials are not amused.

The Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office and the Mississippi Attorney General’s office said observers from both offices will be present in Mississippi counties on election day Tuesday.

“Observers from both the Secretary of State’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office will be in Mississippi counties on Election Day,” the offices said Monday in a joint statement providing guidance on election day.

The statement also said that “there is no authority in state law for a PAC or other outside group to place ‘election observers’ in Mississippi polling places.”

Voter fraud may not exist, but voter intimidation definitely does — and that’s the true purpose of this moronic Tea Party plan. They’re really not fooling anyone but themselves.

Ken Cuccinelli:
“The laws in Mississippi are unusually open to poll watching from the outside. We’re going to take full advantage of that and we’re going to lay eyes on Cochran’s effort to bring Democrats in. And of course, if they voted in primaries, that’s illegal.”

Cuccinnelli reminding Virginians again how we avoided making a big mistake. There’s nothing illegal about crossover voters in an open primary. Cucci should be upset that his candidate of choice is so revolting that many Democrats would rather crossover and vote for him than take a chance with McDaniel’s sorry ass.

Ben Jacobs, The Daily Beast:

The problem is that Mississippi has long operated as a state that functionally had an open primary. The only limitation in case of a runoff is that a voter can’t participate if he has already cast a ballot in the other party’s primary. Thus, a voter who voted in the Democratic primary on June 3 can’t participate in Tuesday’s runoff. But, with the exception of rogue operators like Brown, the law has long been more honored in the breach than the observance—-particularly in a state like Mississippi, where Democrats still dominate at the local level in many areas. Even a diehard Republican like McDaniel cast a ballot in the Democratic primary in 2003——his campaign has declined multiple requests for comment as to whether he voted for the incumbent Democratic governor, Ronnie Musgrove, in the general election that year and prodded Cochran spokesman Jordan Russell to note that, by the logic of McDaniel’s supporters, the conservative diehard either “broke the law or voted for Ronnie Musgrove that November in the general election.”

Ben Jacobs, The Daily Beast:

Interesting. I seems they need to repair their voting laws

The problem is that Mississippi, which doesn’t have voter registration by party, has a statute that prohibits people from voting in a party primary if they don’t intend to vote for that party’s nominee. However, save an outright declaration of intent or the ability of an election judge to read minds, it’s hard to determine voter intent months in advance.

Mr. Koskinen testified that he had hidden nothing from Congress and that he did not learn until April that Ms. Lerner’s emails were missing. “All the emails we have will be provided,” he said in a testy exchange. “I did not say I would provide you emails that disappeared. If you have a magical way for me to do that, I’d be happy to know about it.”

Further, he said, the committee had been put on notice last fall that some of Ms. Lerner’s emails had disappeared. “So it should be clear that no one has been keeping this information from the Congress,” he said.

That certainly complicated matters. I saw an interesting idea recently: creating another layer of anonymity to limit the influence of money. Campaign contributions would be filtered through a government run slush fund and then distributed to the intended campaigns anonymously at random intervals. That way a campaign would never really be sure who donated to them and how much was given. Anyone could claim they made a huge donation and the campaign would never be sure.
I’ve seen worse ideas

U.S. Memo Justifies Drone Hit on American Citizen al-Awlaki

nbcnews.com

“Al-Awlaki, the memo concluded, was “engaged in continual planning and direction of attacks upon U.S. persons from one of the enemy’s overseas basis of operations, the U.S. government does not know precisely when such attacks will occur, and a capture operation would be infeasible.”

“Obama administration officials, including Attorney General Eric Holder, had earlier given a public explanation of the broad outlines of the memo’s legal arguments.

(snip)

“Al-Awlaki had assumed operational and leadership roles in al Qaeda in Yemen and continued “to plot attacks intended to kill Americans from his base of operations” there. ” More

As far as I’m concerned, Al-Awlaki had given up his American citizenship a long time ago, even before he left the US permanently in 2002. At one time, as a student, he had even obtained SS benefits fraudulently as a “foreign student” to attend school in the US, stating that he had been born in Yemen (he was born to Yememi parents in New Mexico).

Yet, these dudebro types continue to second guess what the DOJ and the intelligence community knew about him and the extent of his operations.

I don’t defend killing, but if it was determined that this man was a continuing terrorist threat to the US at the time, I would rather see one person dead than thousands.

The thing is, it’s hard to justify why his citizenship should matter when you think about it. The whole issue is meant to be inflammatory and not much else.

Should the US have lower standards for attacks against non-US citizens under the laws of war? I don’t remember the allies checking axis passports in the D-day assault, and there were definitely a few Americans fighting for the Germans. How about if he had a green card: does that mean we could just wing him?

Or are they saying that he should be arrested under US laws even though he’s in a foreign country? Yemen had a dead-or-alive warrant out for him already, which would be the sovereign authority there, since, you know, it’s their country. Essentially, if you take this tack you’re asserting American sovereignty over all its citizens over the entire planet, which is imperialist enough to give the neocon wingnuts vapors.

So the whole thing is a sort of bizarro world American exceptionalism when you get down to it, which tracks nicely with the overall bizarro world American exceptionalism of the Snowwald/Wikileaks cabal.

I think venue counts for something, no matter what your citizenship is. People shouldn’t be able to get away with criminal or terroristic activities because of citizenship. Otherwise, people could keep committing anti-social activities, either criminal or terroristic, and moving from country to country or living with no expectation of justice for their crimes.

Thats the whole point behind these drone strikes. The targets are deliberately placing themselves outside of areas where conventional forces can reach them. When I watched this Russia Today video of Abby Martin with her half-wit brother Robbie, I skipped over the musical “performance,” but after Robbie ranted like a fool at me last night on Twitter I got curious, so I actually listened to some of his “music.”

My goodness. Dear dear. Whoever told Robbie Martin he had any discernible musical talent should be thrown in jail for lying to an idiot. That was really, really awful.

Has anyone ever watched the whole thing?

At the end, he talks. No talent there, either.

In an Institute on the Constitution video released yesterday, Peroutka claims that the Maryland General Assembly is “no longer a valid legislative body” and that therefore none of the laws that it has passed are “legally valid and legally enforceable.”

This is because, Peroutka argues, the Maryland Assembly has passed laws that “violate God’s law” and therefore have violated the Constitution and moved toward “despotism.” The laws that have invalidated Maryland’s entire state government in Peroutka’s estimation are a marriage equality bill, a transgender equality bill, an assault weapons ban and a stormwater runoff fee .

I’ve seen worse ideas

oh sure… like I’d really trust The Other Party Incumbent Administration to give my campaign what they’re supposed to.

Well, there are white dudes with bigger problems than that, but for those who make those complaints that quote is very apt.

Actually, now that I think about it, they can say whatever they want. The complaint really is that some people might not like them if they do. Funny, I’ve observed that when I say mean things to people those people don’t like me. Am I being oppressed?

So, my g/f and I were talking about the (FUBAR) Meriam Ibrahim situation in Sudan, and while she found it upsetting (understandably) I asked her what she what do about it. I told her if was in charge of such things in the world the President of Sudan would be hearing an expletive-laden tirade for this, as well as a promise that more bad things would be forthcoming.

Her response was…..less diplomatic. Taking up my Goodfellas snark, she found this:

Youtube Video

And said, “See…..I’m Joe Pesci. My Vice President is Robert DeNiro. And that guy in the middle getting the shit beaten out of him is the President of Sudan until he releases these innocent people. This would be done after I’d invited him over to my presidential palace for a little chat over the matter.”

Note to self…..never piss her off. And I’d must remember to get her something nice for her B-Day next week.

Or else.

How long before Glenny compares Snowden to Jesus?

Comparing Snowden to Rosa Parks and the Tunisian street vendor who sparked the Arab Spring by immolating himself, Greenwald declared: “Any structure built by human beings, no matter how formidable or entrenched or powerful it might seem, can always be torn down and replaced by other human beings… . No matter who you are as an individual, you really do … have it within yourself the ability to change the world.”

OT: So much for the stereotype of submissive, powerless Muslim women. Sounds like she took some ISIS assholes with her before she went.

Iraqi female politician killed fighting Isis

The daughter of a prominent Sunni tribal leader killed by al-Qaeda seven years ago, she was said to have been wielding a rocket-propelled grenade launcher when she was hit by a sniper. […]

Her father, Sheikh Naji Jabara, was assassinated with a car bomb by al-Qaeda in Iraq, a forerunner of Isis, in 2007. He was the leader of a provincial branch of the so-called “Sahwa” or Awakening Councils, tribes which although Sunni eventually joined forces with American and British troops to take on the increasingly extremist insurgency in Sunni Iraq.

Her uncle, Abdullah, was also killed by Isis earlier this year while fighting to withstand an attack on the provincial council building in the major Salahuddin city of Samarra, home to an important Shia shrine. […]

Miss Jabara was the adviser on women’s affairs and social welfare to the governor of Salahuddin province. According to local reports, she had already killed a number of Isis fighters before she died. […]

Why do I have a feeling that some sovereign citizens will try to avoid paying the storm water runoff fee? It’s hard to imagine something like the Bundy standoff happening in Maryland, but you never know.

Here’s some more information on Peroutka, who is running for the County Council of Ann Arundel County, Maryland: Two Arundel candidates labeled as ‘extremist’ by Southern Poverty Law Center.

It’s probably the most liberal place I’ve ever lived in my life, but there are a small minority of people here who seem to want it to be part of the “South,” whatever their fevered fantasy of that non-existent nation may be. I’ve only been living here for a little while, but they all strike me as cranks. Weirdly, the Tea Party and the far right extremists might have the unintended effect of making the state even bluer. Maybe I’m wrong because I don’t live in a rural area, but it’s really hard to see them getting a foothold here, although they seem to be trying.
