The government that moved into the South in the 1960s had the violence of the 50s, a movement led by MLK, and images of blacks (and some whites) getting beaten and killed by Southerners. It had been working up to it.
I absolutely deplore the way the country has gone. We didn’t improve race relations; everyone took a time out after the Kennedy and MLK killings. Some of the newer generation have moved forward, but there are still plenty, nearly a majority and obviously a large portion of those that vote, that still believe that this is a white country. But

Officers were on the scene less than 90 seconds after Brown was shot. If Wilson could have stalled for a minute, anywhere in the encounter, Brown would be alive today.
It comes down to bad policing. Engage first, shoot first. Let’s figure it out later.

I truly worry about that. We are so set up to redo the early 1900s, where gains made by blacks are erased. I worry about a new “white populism” where Republicans appeal to a large number of whites, a number of whom are currently Democrats, and convince them to back laws that restrict minorities, things like raising wages for whites but not blacks (targeting certain jobs), allowing discriminations because the government shouldn’t be involved in private business.

It’s Incredibly Rare For A Grand Jury To Do What Ferguson’s Just Did
Former New York state Chief Judge Sol Wachtler famously remarked that a prosecutor could persuade a grand jury to “indict a ham sandwich.” The data suggests he was barely exaggerating: According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. attorneys prosecuted 162,000 federal cases in 2010, the most recent year for which we have data. Grand juries declined to return an indictment in 11 of them.

Brown ran 178 feet from the car, then turned around and approached Wilson, who was chasing him. Brown got shot approximately 153 feet from the police vehicle. After the two shots fired in the car, one which likely grazed Brown’s thumb, Wilson followed Brown and fired a total of ten more shots in two separate barrages. Three of those shots were likely fatal, and I believe Brown was struck at least six times, including the first shot by the car that grazed his thumb. Supposedly, four shots struck Brown as he was bent over. The question is, was he bent over while running at Wilson, or was he bent over in a stationary position? I think at least one or two of those shots hit him while he was stationary. How can that NOT be indictable? Unbelievable.

I think you didn’t get my meaning. When I used the words ‘light up’ I meant the streets of America turning into chaos tonight with police having to take deadly actions, and then having the idiots in the KKK and vigilantly groups taking part…like Bundy only this time actually firing on protesters and who knows who. I don’t want civil war. Maybe I am too worried, but I am old enough to remember Detroit, Newark New Jersey, Watts. A repeat of that with more deaths will not change anything. Those were civil wars…small civil wars.
I think you are using light up in the sense of people getting pissed off and demanding action, etc. I have no problem with that. I hope that people are pissed. I hope people do something about it…through peaceful means.
I just don’t want to see America go nuts…I do think (like you) that we are at a tipping point. I don’t want to see it tip over. That is 11 to me. I am hoping you do not want it to either. I hope you and others don’t want to see civil strife, civil war. If anyone does, then that is real sickening.

The protesters in Ferguson are way braver people than I am, and I want to give them whatever props I can for doing what they are doing.
Now, it will be pointless if what happened to Brown and to others, and what didn’t happen to Wilson, just bleeds into everyday events. What would really be nice is if there was a party that could mobilize people around this, but that will have to happen from the ground up.

re: #173 Higgs Boson’s Mate
Do the people who have condoned or ignored the fact that the police can shoot a person of color without consequences think that it will stop with people of color? history suggests that they’re wrong.
Bingo. Better hope you or your family aren’t union members or belong to the wrong church…

I don’t want to sound too hopey (probably hokey as well) but, being an optimist, the fact that we’re all bitching about this is some progress. We need to turn this into action, but it’s always been too easy for this country to just go on and ignore what happened, and it’s not getting to happen right now.
Dozens of children got killed at Sandy Hook and nothing of consequence came of it.
Michael Brown getting murdered in cold blood by a white cop? Yeah, nothing’s going to change because of that, either.

There’s a key word that is being missed in that statement.
FEDERAL
This was a state case. No comparison. And, federal prosecutors hate losing, so if a federal case is brought, usually they have their ducks lined up.
To be an apt comparison, you’d need to compare state cases. That was not done here.
State grand juries are probably even more favorable to prosecutors.

Why would there be a police presence? Aren’t all the cops in STL off celebrating their buddy walking free? I thought the National Guard got called in.

Saw that from a prosecuter on MSNBC as well as one of their legal analysts. Wilson get the best defense lawyer he could have hoped for.
And I’m sure, a new set of wedding china.

But you know, this time I don’t think the cameras were on their side. They were peaceful, told their stories. But the only real TV was when the press was arrested, the press is being tear gassed tonight.
The situation has changed a bit.
Quite true.
People were shocked by the attack dogs and fire hoses in 1962 when they saw it on TV.
That is no longer the case…and the culture war has made it inevitable that a substantial chunk of people will reflexively back any violent action on minorities no matter what the situation.
In some important ways, we are actually regressing vis a vis civil rights, and we have no accepted means to even admit it, much less redress it.

Middle class whites are starting to find that out. Cops with guns and no accountability can be hazardous to anyone’s health.

Oh, but they are accountable. They never bother their bosses in the 1%.
And people get upset when I talk about Franco’s Spain or Pinochet’s Chile…

BTW, when I tell you that my nephew actually looks a LOT like Mike Brown, so I can’t even really look at the pictures of him and NOT see my nephew, same coloring, same build, even same fat cheeks (I used to squeeze them when he was younger).
So yeah, excuse me if I’m not as willing as others to joke or be snarky about this whole mess.

Like I said, I’m an optimist. Otherwise, I’m not going to pay attention. I will try to get people elected who could make things better, help those who try, and make sure my kids are better than than people my age and older and the people around them.

re: #63 EPR-radar
I agree that we don’t need POTUS to get nailed with the “angry black man” thing.
On the other hand, there had better be something real significant coming out of the Justice department sooner rather than later. This should be the biggest Federal civil right case since the Jim Crow era.
How do you know that? We don’t know what the actual evidence was. I would like to hear from members of the grand jury, but I would expect that they will be too afraid to speak about what evidence led them to not indict. The Feds can look into it, and I am sure they already are, but there may be no way to get a conviction here.

It comes down to bad policing. Engage first, shoot first. Let’s figure it out later.
War On Crime! and all that.
