Here’s a beautiful performance with excellent tone, by a guy who looks and plays like he might be related to Andy McKee (but he’s not).

The Supreme Court Just Told The NRA To Go F*ck Themselves, And Rightfully So

In a case that is bound to get the NRA and their band of merry ammosexuals up in arms (pun intended), the Supreme Court just sided with San Francisco by refusing to hear a case that featured gun owners in a tizzy over the fact that they are required to keep their guns locked up — in other words — well regulated.

The case titled Jackson v. City and County of San Francisco is described as such:

“Issue: Whether San Francisco’s attempt to deprive law-abiding individuals of immediate access to operable handguns in their own homes is any more constitutional than the District of Columbia’s invalidated effort to do the same.”

However, the Supreme Court decided, with only two in dissent, that they are not going to hear the case. Back in March of 2014, the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a 2007 San Francisco regulation that requires all guns be locked up, disabled, and/or the trigger-lock must be used when stored at home. With the Supreme Court refusing to hear the case, they just upheld the lower courts ruling, and the regulation shall stand.

re: #1 FemNaziBitch

From another web site:

don’t think the decision not to take the case ends up with an unconstitutional law, and I don’t think it disarms anyone. There are two issues, the secured gun one and the hollow point one.

It has been pointed out here the small number of brands of ammo prohibited for sale. If folks want those for what ever reason, they may drive across one of the bridges to get them; they may BART to and fro.

The secured gun law supports an idea I have supported, that of requiring “unsupervised” guns to be secured (those are my words). Naturally, there is no way to detect whether the ordinance is being followed inside the home; rather, after a “fact”, for example a child finds an unsupervised gun and shoots a neighbor’s porch light out, an incident would bring down punishment.

That four justices could not be persuaded to take the case reflects a notion that this law does not step on Heller toes: The People of San Francisco may keep handguns in their homes with some caveats: the guns must be secured unless [need exact language] they are worn—note I supported the securing of “unsupervised” guns. I believe the ordinance now forces poor People of San Francisco to cough up twelve bucks for an Uncle Mike’s holster to put on one’s hip at home. The gun, in absence of Big Bro watching, could be lying anywhere; the owner, were the gun to be used in self defense in the home—god forbid, could have placed the gun anywhere. Cops upon arrival—as with any shooting—would take the gun while an investigation was conducted. If the owner were wearing the holster when they arrived, they would note that fact in their notes—this would be even cuter were the owner to make a deer skin thigh holster to wear to bed while the gun reposed on the night stand or where ever.

This is a city ordinance. Perhaps other cities would pursue this, but it is not likely. SF has a fat tax base and can go to court repeatedly. Not so with many other cities.

I see a business opportunity for makers of deer skin thigh holsters. I see this neither as victory nor defeat for gun owners. The NRA seems to have presented a weak case.

Let’s see what appeals are filed, if any.

Stainless steel fundoshi firmly in place.

My guess is that the 2AF or GOA will file another challenge and present a different argument. THAT will probably get the requisite 4 justices to sign on to having it heard at SCOTUS.

26 Charles Johnson  Jun 14, 2015 12:05:15pm

re: #21 Charles Johnson

And this, by the way, is the ONLY actual mistake/falsehood Greenwald identifies in the Sunday Times article. I just read his post at The Intercept, and it’s nothing but an extended rant.

I don’t know. I think a lock on a closet would serve as “secured”.

As firearms are valuable possessions that are a target for thieves, I would think a person would want them “secure”.

Another time when he was asked why Boulware didn’t get help, he answered, “Where? Where can a white male get help”?

I notice that too. Could all of the boxed be made the same size so that posts line up from left to right without an odd-sized box throwing things off?

Given that we’re going to have to click through to read the whole article anyway, can you set the box size and just let the text fill the box until it’s full?

It looks good, but I hate grid or tiled layouts. Reminds me more of something like Pinterest or Tumbr than a news site.

I don’t know why grids are becoming so popular - maybe because things are harder to find, so it increases the chance that someone’s eyeball will randomly hit an ad? For an example, see this:

mlb.mlb.com

I believe when people see information, they want to see it in 1 dimension, either horizontally or vertically, and the ordering principle should be easy to figure out - by time, alphabetically, popularity, etc. - at a glance.

With the new page, my eyes have to swoop back and forth. It takes longer and makes it easy to miss what I’m looking for, or miss a newer article if it has been bumped out of the top position. The unequal block size makes it even more difficult.

re: #38 stpaulbear

They could be of variable width, so that the chronology is always right.
While that could lead to a “ragged” right edge of the page, I suppose the summary width of all boxes in a single row could be made fixed too, and if some box doesn’t fit, it goes in the next row, while the remaining space is proportionally divided among the remaining boxes.

It’s not up to us to “support” the Iranian “dictatorship” or not. Or up to the US government, either. Yes, it’s unfortunate that the Iranian people live under an oppressive régime. (At least we haven’t been propping them up for decades like we did Saddam until we suddenly turned on him.)

Refusing to make a nuclear deal with them because we disapprove of them politically would really be cutting off our nose to spite our face, though.

re: #47 Nyet

Thanks. You know, even though most people don’t like the current regime in Iran (Including many Iranians), they hate the MEK even more because they allied themselves with Saddam during the Iran-Iraq war and, towards the end, even made a military incursion into Iran with cover provided by Saddam’s air force. They’re basically viewed as treasonous for that.

All the words seem right, but you know there’s a catch.

it’s very much built around the personality of Maryam Rajavi. Back in the day, her husband Massoud Rajavi also, but he’s been missing for some time now.

The thing that annoys me the most about this is that looking at it even from a completely selfish “realpolitik” point of view, allying ourselves with such a group makes zero sense because it’s not in our best interests (due to the reasons mentioned in previous comments). The MEK on the other hand would benefit politically.

If anyone thinks a group that previously assassinated & bombed those it disagreed with, and even turned on it’s own people during wartime would somehow be kinder, gentler, more reliable allies than the IRI, you might want to think again. Iranian politics—ugh.

MEK and the US government[edit]
Before their exile, ‘Anti-Imperialism’ was preached by MEK both before and after revolution. The Mojahedin Organization praised writers such as Al-e Ahmad, Saedi and Shariati for being ‘anti-imperialist’.[90] Rajavi in his presidential campaign after revolution used to warn against what he called the ‘imperialist danger’.[91] The matter was so fundamental to MEK that it criticized the Iranian government on that basis, accusing the Islamic Republic of ‘capitualation to imperialism’ and being disloyal to democracy that according to Rajavi was the only means to ‘safeguard from American imperialism’.[92] However, after exile, Rajavi toned down the issues of imperialism, social revolution, and classless society. Instead he stressed on human rights and respect for ‘personal property’.[93]

If anyone thinks a group that previously assassinated & bombed those it disagreed with, and even turned on it’s own people during wartime would somehow be kinder, gentler, more reliable allies than the IRI, you might want to think again. Iranian politics—ugh.

Quite Concur. And frankly, I’d arguer now is not a good time for radical change in Iran. I hate to say it, but Iran is just too important to the fight against Daesh (ISIS) at the moment for me to want internal turmoil there.

It’s a FAIL unless Jeb means he’s going to use a strong position and materiel superiority to pound those who attack him into ruin. That was the outcome of Pickett’s Charge, after all.

On the other hand, the spectacle of a GOP establishment figure badly bungling a civil war reference while campaigning to be the nominee of a party whose establishment threw out the welcome mat for neo-Confederates is thoroughly amusing.

I think we won’t have a choice.

The demographic pyramid in Iran is bottom heavy compared to the American One, and Iranians have ways to talk and meet others outside the country, despite Khamenei’s best efforts. Something will give eventually.

If I were to guess, when Khamenei dies, something is going to go poof.

They made the mistake of setting themselves up as an Islamic “Republic” (Well, Cargo Cult Republic, better yet) with an ostensibly democratic form of government. Two years before he was linked to a violent attack on Dallas police headquarters, James Boulware was arrested after his family reported he was armed and might attack schools and churches in an East Texas town.

Boulware’s brother, Andrew, told The Associated Press on Sunday that James Boulware talked about attacking “soft targets” in Paris, Texas, in a March 2013 incident. He was arrested on allegations that he choked his mother that same day, according to family members and police records.

Andrew Boulware said he had tried to get his brother help after that arrest, but was unsuccessful. He said his brother showed signs of mental instability, including telling people he had dreamed about events like the Sandy Hook, Connecticut, school shooting before it happened.

I doubt he wanted “help”—that’s what “weak liberals” do in his disordered mind.

But, I can’t understand why he didn’t do some time for his previous behavior? If he had gone to court, a psychiatric evaluation and recommendations could have been ordered as well.

Thing is, the whole ideology of the Islamic Republic is a farce, not to different from the idea that the leaders of a nation have a direct line to God from Medieval Times in Europe.

I do understand that Iran will never be secular as we understand it. Shia Islam is hierarchical, at least to a degree, so Iran will likely end up having a State-Faith. Something like the remaining nations in Europe that have a state-church, though more intense.

Yeah, in the beginning I didn’t think it was the best idea to try to build a new mosque there, but when people started acting as if all Muslims are Nazis and asserting that we shouldn’t have the same rights/protections as other religions it forced me to change my mind. Precisely but the critics of Park-51 didn’t do that. By the way, I think I told you at around the time of that debate or close to it that this was what inspired my term paper on the pogroms in your country. Exactly, it was the people arguing against the first amendment rights of Muslims that bothered me and seeing how nasty people Pam (who I had recently became familiar with were towards Muslims). They called it the “Ground Zero Victory Mosque” which I found fucking sick because as I said there were many Muslim victims of 9/11 too and that Imam and his congregation(don’t know the correct word here, if you want to help a guy out here, feel free) but they had no connection whatsoever to Al Queda or the Taliban.

I actually knew quite a few more Mormons than average growing up. Same with Muslims actually. Mostly nice people both ways. I think they’re both missing out by not drinking and in the case of Muslims not enjoying pork too but never had any problems with them. The most intolerant people I knew growing up were ultra conservative Catholics(think Frothy) and I come from a culturally Catholic family- even got a great uncle who was a priest and my Dad and his siblings were parochial school kids.

Around 2002, give or take a couple of years, I seriously delved into everything Mormon. History, apologetics, counter-apologetics, original diaries, old books, forgotten and censored sermons, etc.

It’s simply a very fascinating phenomenon that also shows almost “in real time” how a religion is created and evolves. It’s sort of a potential mini-model for some other religions.

I did meet Muslims in College. but no one Jewish. After my Sophmore year,Muslims and Jewish students did not talk to one another. Namely because the Jewish organization thought it would be funny to call the police on us (This was before I converted, but did attend MSA events, though I was not at that particular meeting).

There are roughly between 4.4 - 6.1 million Mormons in the U.S. I can count the number I’ve met personally on one or two hands, and even then some of those were people who converted to Islam.

How many Mormons has any one person actually met, including anyone who is (or was) Mormon? Hundreds, maybe thousands on a causal level? Now how many out of those hundreds or thousands have they gotten to know well enough to judge that person’s values/character. I’d venture to guess a tiny fraction. That’s what makes this type of bigotry and group blame so stupid—it’s making assertions about things you cannot possibly know.

Pretty much every -ism/ideology/philosophy/whatever is like that, including religion, democracy, etc. They sound great on paper, but the minute they crash into reality and we humans get our grubby little hands on things, we start competing with each other and mucking it all up. *sigh*

As a species, we kinda suck. We may have managed to claw our way to the top of the food chain, but we may also be too clever by half for our own good. Time will tell, I suppose.

re: #214 Romantic Heretic

Well, they’re about to have a harder time getting those recruits into Syria:

Syrian Kurds battle Islamic State for town at Turkish border

The Kurdish-led YPG, working with the U.S.-led alliance and small Syrian rebel groups, has pushed into Islamic State’s Syrian stronghold of Raqqa province, threatening one of its supply lines to the jihadists’ de facto capital, Raqqa city.

While dealing a blow to Islamic State, seizing Tel Abyad would also help the YPG to link up Kurdish-controlled areas of northern Syria. Turkey is worried about the risk of separatist sentiment among its own Kurdish minority in the southwest.

At least 13,000 people have fled into Turkey over the past week to escape the fighting near Tel Abyad.

On Sunday, Turkish authorities reopened the border after a few days of closure, a security source said, adding that they expected as many as 10,000 people to come across.

Local media said Islamic State militants had tried to prevent refugees from crossing into Turkey.

Attacking Tel Abyad is a very shrewd move: Daesh can’t really afford to lose it and their ‘capital of Raqqa is near enough for its garrison to attempt to counter-attack.

Of course, the YPG want Daesh to try a counter attack, since any such move will have to be over up ground under heavy drone surveillance. Thus such a move would likely be seen coming and then be pounded into scrap by coalition air power. But if Daesh does not act, they’ll lose their primary border crossing.

So here we see once again how moving against your enemy’s sources of supply can force them to fight you on your terms.

Uh yes, when did we start judging leadership by how they open an umbrella or throw a baseball? And Obama’s first pitch I will say as a former pitcher wasn’t the best I’ve seen but it was far from the worst either. But that said, the fact that George W. Bush can throw a “strike” on his first pitch doesn’t make him a better leader than Obama. With the A/C not working I did the obvious thing and went and took a walk out in the hotter outside.

Took the camera along though.

Came across an interesting bloom on a low bush. Had both a blue and a red variant.

Bloom in the Azalea Garden

Other creatures found them interesting too.

The Baron of Boobs speaketh:

Rupert Murdoch: LGBT Advocacy In Clinton Speech “Almost Fascist”

Addled, perhaps more so due to age.

Actually Rupert trying to deny them advocacy and equal rights is more closer to fascism. I’d like you to name one fascist state where LGBT rights were tolerated let alone respected.

Really I think it’s adorable seeing people of the ideology that actually embraced fascism as a counter to communism crying fascism everytime a group advocates something they don’t like. Just because Rupert opposes rights for LGBT people and Hillary supports them doesn’t make Hillary a fascist.

Going by the wiki page that seems likely that is what they are. Especially since one of the blooming patterns matches what I saw.

Thanks for the ID suggestion.

They do tours, if you are ever in the area, but they are hard to get into - sell out all the time.

We couldn’t get one on the right day the last time we passed through that way, so hoping for next trip.

As for gin, it can definitely be an acquired taste. There are times where it is definitely worth paying for the premium stuff. If you drink it with tonic (my preferred), the tonic ALSO plays a huge role.

Occasionally mr. klys and I toss around the idea of opening a gin bar. Offering both gin samplers and tonic samplers. I’m playing around with the possibility of writing up gin reviews on my blog too.

Ever tried making your own?

Anyway, a really good bartenders blog. I got lost there for a while and feel I need a to go mix up a cocktail, like right now.

Think I will go with vodka, cucumber/lemon water, mint and ginger beer.
Or…maybe a mojito.

Walking along the river I took a side trail that went closer to the water and is not paved. Less traffic, and quieter as well. Saw a group of geese with goslings.

Also got a nice photo of a blooming thistle.

You know what’s a good and simple drink, ginger ale and whiskey with a sprinkling of lime. Don’t know the official name for that but I called it an O’Malley after an Irish woman named Grace O’Malley who was pretty much Queen Elizabeth’s Irish counterpart.

Yeah I like it for its simplicity. I typically don’t like drinks with too much in them. Then it becomes sort of like a slurpee with multpille favors. I enjoy Cuba Libres, Dark n Stormies, etc too.

Yeah, CNN had a story about that. The report also noted that until the cops actually got close to Tamir Rice, everyone except his sister though he was at least 16, not 12. Rice had the misfortune to be both big and black, and that plus a pullet gun was all it took to get him killed (given the poor instincts and training of the cop who shot him).

Best of a set from today. I also need to look up the manual settings to use on the Nikon to see if I can “freeze” a bee shot. Wings show up as a blur.

Of course there was also one “resting” on a flower in one spot and sitting real still. Facing away from me, three feet into a large bush, and two feet higher than my head. :p

Just proves to me that when my dogs give me what I call the “I love you, mom” face that I’m totally not making it up. Hubby and I even had a term we called the “eye hug”. It was funny to hear the guy say that the look was the doggie equivalent of a hug. Well duh, I’ve known that since I was a kid. Love that I can now say “see? Proven right!”

Same old story, new name:

Embattled senator wrote of giving up evils in life

The senator accused of embezzling more than $1 million to support a hidden gambling habit encouraged friends in January to give up the evils in their lives — like gambling […]

To those who know [eds: but do they really?] him, Brinkley, 53, is the least likely legislator to be at the center of the biggest political scandal in Oklahoma in years.

“I refuse to believe that he would do anything dishonorable and dishonest. That is not the Rick Brinkley that I know,” said a longtime friend, retired schoolteacher Gail Ballinger, 71, of Owasso. “I’m convinced there’s a witch hunt.”

Before the scandal broke June 2, he was best known as the senator who led others in prayer at the Capitol, the former church pastor who still did weddings and funerals, and the loving grandfather whose favorite pastime was to watch his teenage grandson play soccer.

On Friday, his troubles got worse. The Oklahoma Ethics Commission voted to investigate him for possible personal use of campaign funds. He is accused in the lawsuit of sending both campaign funds and embezzled funds to CTW Inc., a fake entity created to pay personal expenses.

IIRC, he had three laptops with him every step of the journey, but we were assured that even if the Chinese or Russians got a hold of them, they’d be useless because the encryption was so tight that it would take years to crack it.
