The Supreme Court Just Told The NRA To Go F*ck Themselves, And Rightfully So

In a case that is bound to get the NRA and their band of merry ammosexuals up in arms (pun intended), the Supreme Court just sided with San Francisco by refusing to hear a case that featured gun owners in a tizzy over the fact that they are required to keep their guns locked up — in other words — well regulated.

The case titled Jackson v. City and County of San Francisco is described as such:

“Issue: Whether San Francisco’s attempt to deprive law-abiding individuals of immediate access to operable handguns in their own homes is any more constitutional than the District of Columbia’s invalidated effort to do the same.”

However, the Supreme Court decided, with only two in dissent, that they are not going to hear the case. Back in March of 2014, the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a 2007 San Francisco regulation that requires all guns be locked up, disabled, and/or the trigger-lock must be used when stored at home. With the Supreme Court refusing to hear the case, they just upheld the lower courts ruling, and the regulation shall stand.

don’t think the decision not to take the case ends up with an unconstitutional law, and I don’t think it disarms anyone. There are two issues, the secured gun one and the hollow point one.

It has been pointed out here the small number of brands of ammo prohibited for sale. If folks want those for what ever reason, they may drive across one of the bridges to get them; they may BART to and fro.

The secured gun law supports an idea I have supported, that of requiring “unsupervised” guns to be secured (those are my words). Naturally, there is no way to detect whether the ordinance is being followed inside the home; rather, after a “fact”, for example a child finds an unsupervised gun and shoots a neighbor’s porch light out, an incident would bring down punishment.

That four justices could not be persuaded to take the case reflects a notion that this law does not step on Heller toes: The People of San Francisco may keep handguns in their homes with some caveats: the guns must be secured unless [need exact language] they are worn—note I supported the securing of “unsupervised” guns. I believe the ordinance now forces poor People of San Francisco to cough up twelve bucks for an Uncle Mike’s holster to put on one’s hip at home. The gun, in absence of Big Bro watching, could be lying anywhere; the owner, were the gun to be used in self defense in the home—god forbid, could have placed the gun anywhere. Cops upon arrival—as with any shooting—would take the gun while an investigation was conducted. If the owner were wearing the holster when they arrived, they would note that fact in their notes—this would be even cuter were the owner to make a deer skin thigh holster to wear to bed while the gun reposed on the night stand or where ever.

This is a city ordinance. Perhaps other cities would pursue this, but it is not likely. SF has a fat tax base and can go to court repeatedly. Not so with many other cities.

I see a business opportunity for makers of deer skin thigh holsters. I see this neither as victory nor defeat for gun owners. The NRA seems to have presented a weak case.

Let’s see what appeals are filed, if any.

My guess is that the 2AF or GOA will file another challenge and present a different argument. THAT will probably get the requisite 4 justices to sign on to having it heard at SCOTUS.

As firearms are valuable possessions that are a target for thieves, I would think a person would want them “secure”.

It looks good, but I hate grid or tiled layouts. Reminds me more of something like Pinterest or Tumbr than a news site.

I don’t know why grids are becoming so popular - maybe because things are harder to find, so it increases the chance that someone’s eyeball will randomly hit an ad? For an example, see this:

I believe when people see information, they want to see it in 1 dimension, either horizontally or vertically, and the ordering principle should be easy to figure out - by time, alphabetically, popularity, etc. - at a glance.

With the new page, my eyes have to swoop back and forth. It takes longer and makes it easy to miss what I’m looking for, or miss a newer article if it has been bumped out of the top position. The unequal block size makes it even more difficult.

They could be of variable width, so that the chronology is always right.
While that could lead to a “ragged” right edge of the page, I suppose the summary width of all boxes in a single row could be made fixed too, and if some box doesn’t fit, it goes in the next row, while the remaining space is proportionally divided among the remaining boxes.

It’s not up to us to “support” the Iranian “dictatorship” or not. Or up to the US government, either. Yes, it’s unfortunate that the Iranian people live under an oppressive régime. (At least we haven’t been propping them up for decades like we did Saddam until we suddenly turned on him.)

Refusing to make a nuclear deal with them because we disapprove of them politically would really be cutting off our nose to spite our face, though.

You know, even though most people don’t like the current regime in Iran (Including many Iranians), they hate the MEK even more because they allied themselves with Saddam during the Iran-Iraq war and, towards the end, even made a military incursion into Iran with cover provided by Saddam’s air force. it’s very much built around the personality of Maryam Rajavi. Back in the day, her husband Massoud Rajavi also, but he’s been missing for some time now.

The thing that annoys me the most about this is that looking at it even from a completely selfish “realpolitik” point of view, allying ourselves with such a group makes zero sense because it’s not in our best interests (due to the reasons mentioned in previous comments). The MEK on the other hand would benefit politically.

If anyone thinks a group that previously assassinated & bombed those it disagreed with, and even turned on it’s own people during wartime would somehow be kinder, gentler, more reliable allies than the IRI, you might want to think again. Iranian politics—ugh.

Charles, I have a request for a change in behavior that affects me when I’m using the site on my phone. When I click on a button to view the original message that a user replies ton it pops up the preview dialog. While that is great, more often than not I hit the back browser button on my phone rather than the cancel button on the dialog. Is there any way you can make the back button close the dialog? Right now it generally returns me to the main lgf page because my general usage is open lgf, click on a page, and read.

Unfortunately - no, the back button is not useable in that way. But if you tap on the darkened background anywhere outside the preview dialog, it will also close the dialog.

Charles is a far more experienced programmer than I, but AFAIK browsers’ history is locked down for security reasons, so that can’t be changed. That said, if AJAX is regularly refreshing the page, the current URL can be replaced each time. One of the things that struck me about the Chron reporting it that there are Central Valley cities that are using reclaimed septic tank water for drinking. One of the people doing that noted that San Franciscans fill their toilets with cleaner water than what he has to drink.

Precisely but the critics of Park-51 didn’t do that. By the way, I think I told you at around the time of that debate or close to it that this was what inspired my term paper on the pogroms in your country. Exactly, it was the people arguing against the first amendment rights of Muslims that bothered me and seeing how nasty people Pam (who I had recently became familiar with were towards Muslims). The Republicans have been running wild these days though because Democratic voters don’t realize that so called off year elections are just as important as presidential ones. That’s the real problem. I would too. That’s disappointing as well so I do take back my comment about Dean being the only Dem given that Reid was and still is the most important Senate Democrat. As for being him part of a minority religion. We’re so strange when it comes to that since in the early years of the Republic, some of the biggest supporters of separation of church and state are of the same religion that want to narrow the gap now. Jefferson’s famous letter regarding separation of church and state was written to Baptists after all.

I actually knew quite a few more Mormons than average growing up. Same with Muslims actually. Mostly nice people both ways. I think they’re both missing out by not drinking and in the case of Muslims not enjoying pork too but never had any problems with them. The most intolerant people I knew growing up were ultra conservative Catholics(think Frothy) and I come from a culturally Catholic family- even got a great uncle who was a priest and my Dad and his siblings were parochial school kids.

As for gin, it can definitely be an acquired taste. There are times where it is definitely worth paying for the premium stuff. If you drink it with tonic (my preferred), the tonic ALSO plays a huge role.

Occasionally mr. klys and I toss around the idea of opening a gin bar. Offering both gin samplers and tonic samplers. I’m playing around with the possibility of writing up gin reviews on my blog too.

I did meet Muslims in College. but no one Jewish. After my Sophmore year,Muslims and Jewish students did not talk to one another. Namely because the Jewish organization thought it would be funny to call the police on us (This was before I converted, but did attend MSA events, though I was not at that particular meeting).

Safe to say, I am still sore about that, and that was 4-5 years ago.

While dealing a blow to Islamic State, seizing Tel Abyad would also help the YPG to link up Kurdish-controlled areas of northern Syria. Turkey is worried about the risk of separatist sentiment among its own Kurdish minority in the southwest.

At least 13,000 people have fled into Turkey over the past week to escape the fighting near Tel Abyad.

On Sunday, Turkish authorities reopened the border after a few days of closure, a security source said, adding that they expected as many as 10,000 people to come across.

Local media said Islamic State militants had tried to prevent refugees from crossing into Turkey.

Attacking Tel Abyad is a very shrewd move: Daesh can’t really afford to lose it and their ‘capital of Raqqa is near enough for its garrison to attempt to counter-attack.

Of course, the YPG want Daesh to try a counter attack, since any such move will have to be over up ground under heavy drone surveillance. Thus such a move would likely be seen coming and then be pounded into scrap by coalition air power. But if Daesh does not act, they’ll lose their primary border crossing.

So here we see once again how moving against your enemy’s sources of supply can force them to fight you on your terms.

So in anticipation for season 2, I’ve been rewatching True Detective. Just started with the pilot last night and man I can’t get over how well written both McConnaughey and Harrelson’s characters of Cohle and Hart were. I love Cohle’s bit about how human consciousness is a misstep of evolution. It’s definitely a cynical take but it is something to think about it and I think the shows writers did that for a reason. The set too. Cannot wait for season 2. I don’t like Vince Vaughn’s politics at all but I am excited to see what he does with Season 2. I’ve also come to like Colin Farrell more as I’ve gotten older too.

Now that you mention it… I just finished weekend binging on Season 3 of Orange is the New Black. One thing I so appreciate about it is the wonderful diversity of characters and a distinct lack of Sweet Young Things. These women are real, their stories are real. It’s such a pleasure to watch.

With the A/C not working I did the obvious thing and went and took a walk out in the hotter outside.

Took the camera along though.

Came across an interesting bloom on a low bush. Had both a blue and a red variant.

They do tours, if you are ever in the area, but they are hard to get into - sell out all the time.

We couldn’t get one on the right day the last time we passed through that way, so hoping for next trip.

As for gin, it can definitely be an acquired taste. There are times where it is definitely worth paying for the premium stuff. If you drink it with tonic (my preferred), the tonic ALSO plays a huge role.

Occasionally mr. klys and I toss around the idea of opening a gin bar. Offering both gin samplers and tonic samplers. I’m playing around with the possibility of writing up gin reviews on my blog too.

Walking along the river I took a side trail that went closer to the water and is not paved. Less traffic, and quieter as well. Saw a group of geese with goslings.

Also got a nice photo of a blooming thistle.

Last stop on the way home was a pass by some beds maintained by the PHS (Pennsylvania Horticultural Society). I also checked the spot where I saw the black bees last year, but no activity while I was there.

Yeah I like it for its simplicity. I typically don’t like drinks with too much in them. Then it becomes sort of like a slurpee with multpille favors. I enjoy Cuba Libres, Dark n Stormies, etc too.

Yeah, CNN had a story about that. The report also noted that until the cops actually got close to Tamir Rice, everyone except his sister though he was at least 16, not 12. Rice had the misfortune to be both big and black, and that plus a pullet gun was all it took to get him killed (given the poor instincts and training of the cop who shot him).

IIRC, he had three laptops with him every step of the journey, but we were assured that even if the Chinese or Russians got a hold of them, they’d be useless because the encryption was so tight that it would take years to crack it.
