The Little Green Footballs Front Page Gets a Major Makeover

I’m pleased to announce that I finally completed the redesign of the Little Green Footballs front page! The old, bloggy design with complete posts scrolling down the page one after another was long overdue for a reboot; it had been essentially unchanged for more than 10 years.

The new design emphasizes graphics much more, and lets you see more articles easily. It also lets you easily check on which articles have active comment sections, with auto-updated comment counters that have popups showing an excerpt of the last posted comment. I’ve redesigned many of the graphic elements to bring them more in line with the new, more modern aesthetic.

And of course, it’s fully mobile-friendly and automatically adapts to small screen sizes.

Right now the redesign is only for the front page, but I’ll be working on the rest of the site as well to make it consistent with the new look.

Hope you like it! I’m excited — it’s always fun to take a design that’s grown kind of stale and make it fresh again.

Yes, the ratings aren’t displayed on the front page any more. I may add those back in eventually; I had trouble coming up with a look for it that fit in with the rest of the design.

And the auto-scrolling feature of the old design is another thing I may or may not add back in. That reminds me, though - I need to work on adding the daily archive feature.

I know it’s a bit of work, but could there be an optional “extra lite” mobile version that gets rid of most features, leaving the most basic stuff (like quoting ability; it would also be best to use the “hard” text versions of tweets instead of the dynamic ones) and the ads, in addition to the current one? (It could have its own URL, like lite.littlegr…).

The current mobile version really drains the phone battery, and is slow when the number of comments reaches around 300-400. Plus when there are many tweets, one has to wait until they all load “dynamically”, the page jumps all the time, it’s problematic to press any buttons, etc. :(

From discussions in the office…. Why should the Confederate flag be held in any higher regard than the flag of Nazi Germany? Okay Goodwin and all but it would be foolish to argue that the impact of slavery on africans was any less impactful than pogroms or the holocaust. Or any less shameful.

Sure it was for labor not for extinction, but it still killed, still was breaking up families and horrifically cruel.

Rand Paul says Confederate flag should be “put in a museum.” nyti.ms via @NYTnickc

12:28 PM - 23 Jun 2015

I notice a quote that was in an earlier linked Buzzfeed article that was posted in the last thread is not in this article. I wonder why it was left out and yet Buzzfeed put it in theirs. You be the judge. I have my opinion.

“… I think to every African-American in the country it’s a symbolism of slavery to them and now it’s a symbol of murder for this young man and so I think it’s times to put it in a museum.”

It was in this article: Buzzfeed News - “Inescapably A Symbol Of Human Bondage And Slavery”

I had asked in that thread if he is basically blaming African Americans for this complaining about the flag.

There are a lot more people that want that flag gone that are not African-Americans, but then if he said that, well it wouldn’t be all on the AA folks.

Rand Paul IS Rand Paul. A lying, plagerizing, pandering, blowing with the wind bullshit artist. He’d make a fine used junker car salesman though. Maybe.

And even if they didn’t own the slaves, they aspired to one day own them. It was the lower class whites that wanted the slave trade reopened to lower the cost of slaves which the upper class whites would never agree to because it would lower the worth of the slaves they owned.

Read his article denouncing the flag and his old beliefs, and he was on CNN earlier.

Gonna try and link from my mobile, but I kinda hate the process.

145 freetoken  Jun 23, 2015 11:26:47am

The problem with believing too much in one’s own cause is that one can be blinded to viewing people and issues through other sets of eyes.

In the case of Dawkins - I agree with him that fundamentalist religions around the world are detrimental, but I refuse to go along with groups and individuals (like Spencer) who want to turn that into a war cry.

If anything about this Confederate flag debacle should teach us, is that wars for causes create wreckage. A cause may be quite good in our eyes, but going to war for it will be pricier than the hawks always are willing to admit.

I write that after reading Robert M. T. Hunter’s little essay “Origin of the Late War”.

Recommend reading that essay, as you will hear echoes of it in so much of the backward politics of the likes of Rand Paul and a great deal of the GOP these days.

It’s a sad essay because the author, Hunter, clearly believed in his cause (of the South) and “states rights” even though it is pretty clear that the protestation against loss of “property” means loss of slaves.

When one reads Coulter or R. McCain and their friends one is hearing the regurgitation of Hunter (and other of his fellows who wrote similarly right after the war.)

The ‘Southern Avenger’ Repents: I Was Wrong About the Confederate Flag

States’ rights? Heritage? I was wrong: The Confederate flag has always been about race.
As a Charleston, South Carolina-based conservative radio personality known as the “Southern Avenger,” I spent a decade defending the Confederate flag that is yet again the center of so much controversy.

I said the flag was about states’ rights. I said it stood for self-determination. I said it honored heritage.

I argued the Confederate flag wasn’t about race. I believed it. Millions of well-meaning Southerners believe it too.

I was wrong. That flag is always about race. Whatever political or historical points the flag’s defenders make, there will never be a time—and never has been a time—in which millions of Americans have looked at that symbol and not seen hatred.

It was in the midst of the Elevatorgate kerfuffle. Rebecca Watson, Skepchick, in a talk about making atheist conferences more welcoming to women told a story about a guy who came on to her at 4am in an elevator and advised, “guys, don’t do that.” It set off a misogynist firestorm of really nasty shit. In a Pharyngula post about it, Dawkins wrote a particularly sarcastic and ugly post, I.e. Dear Muslima, that most thought had to be a scam written by someone else.
