Emergency Crews Respond to Mt. Zion AME Church Fire in SC

Serial arson getting worse
US News • Views: 65,316

Another predominately black church is on fire tonight in South Carolina: Emergency Crews Respond to Mt. Zion AME Church Fire in SC.

This is the 7th church fire since Dylann Storm Roof’s rampage.

So far, officials have said there’s no evidence these fires are hate crimes. But this is now entering the “hard to ignore” category.

No one left a hate note.

Otherwise just regular ole arson at black churches.

It is stirred up, be ready to fight.

4 psddluva4evah  Jun 30, 2015 7:45:40pm

no evidence of hate crime group chatter.

But damn, 7 churches since the Charleston shooting, this one was historically burned by KKK in the past.

I mean…damn, they ALL had faulty wiring?

Too much coincidence…?

Also too, I’ve seen some social media post from news org, but I assume since there is no evidence of hate crime…the news nets aren’t covering.

And yet, that burning of the CVS in Baltimore got darn near wall to wall coverage!!

After watching Republicans/conservatives thrash like wounded rabid animals for the better part of four days, I’m inclined to agree.

With the course they’re on, the GOP will be the fucking death of this nation.

So if we are dealing with a disparate set of lone wolf terrorists, would making a big deal of it improve or damage the situation?

There’s been a lot of discussion about how to handle mass-shootings in a way the de-emphasizes the perpetrators so not to encourage others. Perhaps someone has a deliberate media strategy for dealing with this? Maybe it starts with not telling every would be race warrior that there are others out there, just like them, who are also fighting?

I guess “faulty wiring”…

I mean, I may watch too much Criminal Minds…but 7 fires, all Black churches, all since the mass shooting at a historical predom Black church…

I mean…

Absence of evidence…etc.

At the same time it would be good to know what the ‘normal’ seasonal weekly fire incidence is at small churches nationwide. There are a lot of churches out there.

Not just houses being used as a church.

Sorry to hear but as you know having just attended a wake, better to celebrate the dead than cry for them especially if they lived that long. We had something like one for my Nana who was 92 when she left us.

Hearing about the burning of churches got me to thinking of what were once called KKK night riders. So, for a little background I did a Google search with that very name.

I wish I hadn’t.

The second link on Google goes to a site called the original knight riders. Ugh.

I still keep on thinking what a black classmate said to a white classmate who insisted the CSA flag was just a flag of heritage. It really has stayed with me. I mean I get that people want to believe their ancestors were honorable people serving a just cause but I am so glad that my African-American classmate said what she did because that flag has a lot more hurtful meaning to her than any positive meaning it may have. The CSA flag may be a “Fuck you authority” thing to many white folks but to most black folks, it’s a flag of terror.

Right. Got a lot of Irish in your parts so not surprising. What my dad and aunts/uncles did that was cool for my Nana’s service was they turned it into a memorial service for both her and my grandfather who had died 25 years earlier. The younger grandchildren like me and the great grandchildren never knew him so it was a touching tribute.

I remember when Obama was a candidate I think. He talked about how he wanted people with more empathy on the court and I remember the right scoffing at that. “We don’t need people with empathy, we need judges” rah rah but I really do understand what he means now omre than ever. Empathy is a true gift. It doesn’t mean that you ignore the Constitution or principles but you can look at individuals different than you and understand their struggle, their pain. And interestingly I think although Obama did not appoint him, that was what Justice Kennedy did.

Yeah you gotta like an old lady with a sense of humor. My Nana that I was just telling Franklin about, my one brother got a talking Cartman doll for Christmas one year and she loved it. Not sure how often she listened to it while my grandfather was still with us but he owned a record of the famous Mel Brooks-Carl Reiner 2000 year old man bit. i owe my sense of humor and love of music to that side of the family line.

Interesting choice of words…”broke out”…hm m

[Embedded content]

Its standard media wording: The cause of the fire is not yet known, so saying the fire “broke out” is correct. I’d agree its most likely arson, but when reporting on an individual fire a news network cannot call properly call it arson without evidence. It’s true Fox News breaks that rule often enough, but that doesn’t mean CNN should follow suite.

54 HappyWarrior  Jun 30, 2015 8:31:19pm

I mean it’s easy to just look at someone different than you and shrug them off. And frankly I think that’s why I am not a conservative. I think conservatives too often don’t look at those different from them whether that’s in class, race, religion, or sexuality. I think that really is one of liberalism’s virtues that a liberal by and large can see a man or woman who comes from a totally different walk of life than him and at the least try to understand his story. I may not know what it’s like to be a black young man from the inner city but I like to think I am at least able to try to understand his situation. And so I am clear I am not saying conservatives are uncaring people as a whole, I just think one of conservatism’s weakness as an ideology is that it doesn’t think about those who aren’t in a different boat which is something I’ve seen with the right’ reaction to SSM and the health care decision.

One other point that worthy of note: CNN saw people breaking into the CVS in Baltimore and then filmed the fire first becoming visible. The network crew also heard from people in the crowd that the fire was arson. Given that, calling that CVS fire arson from the start was reasonable.

That fire also got a lot of coverage because it was an easy to grasp angle within the larger story of the Baltimore Riots. White people know what a CVS is and those that live near one know how scared they’d be if that CVS got torched during a riot. Thus the story served to scare viewers and get them to keep watching CNN.

News/ Shots Fired! Bristol Palin Holds a Gun and Quotes Bible Verse in New Instagram Pic Amid Pregnancy Backlash

by Alyssa Toomey Today 3:55 PM PDT

Bristol Palin is firing back at her haters, literally.

The 24-year-old reality star, who is currently expecting her second child, took to Instagram today in an effort to prove she’s ignoring the pregnancy backlash—and it’s safe to say shots have been fired.

Posting a pic of herself holding a shotgun rifle, the daughter of Sarah Palin captioned the image with a bible verse which read, “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. Proverbs 31:25.”

“Shotgun rifle”, when the firearm is obviously just a shotgun. I know entertainment reporters don’t know much about guns, but this goof just seems especially dumb to me.

Of course, let’s remember that the type of gun isn’t really the point. When Palins strike a pose with firearms, most often the gun is really just their version of flashing a gang sign, showing they belong to the “Gun Owning Rural Patriots Faction”.

I work closely with our local US Attorney on ending hate crimes. As a result I get updates from the DOJ pretty regularly. These fires ARE being investigated as both hate crimes and, if concerted actions can be determined, domestic terrorism. The DOJ has a mandate on civil rights, so if local fire departments and police don’t choose to pursue it all, the DOJ will.

I still can’t believe we nearly got this family as second family. Not going to turn this into a WTF were you thinking McCain but man I look at Biden’s family and compare them with the Palins and I just say thank you America. Bristol really shouldn’t be fooling around with guns while pregnant. She wants to do that shit while she’s not, that’s her agenda I guess but just stupid. I won’t call the Palins rednecks because that’s insulting to rednecks.

The DOJ has a mandate on civil rights, so if local fire departments and police don’t choose to pursue it all, the DOJ will.

Def shattering the norms, Misty has always said she was told she “didn’t have the body” for Ballet. And as in the piece she started older than most girls (13), so I’d bet she has a normal teenage body at the time (not the more athletic frame of say someone who’d done gymnastics or dance since IDK, Birth).

I love that the young girl in the piece said that Misty showed if you work hard and practice at it you can make it. (bless her heart)

re: #76 Dark_Falcon

Normally with a Bristol Palin story the unintentional comedy comes from the Palins. But this time a E!writer gets into the act with a writing gaffe as silly as Bristol’s mother (The gaffe is bolded):

Shots Fired! Bristol Palin Holds a Gun and Quotes Bible Verse in New Instagram Pic Amid Pregnancy Backlash

Image: rs_600x600-150630152157-600.bristol-palin-shooting-gun-pregnant-063015.jpg

Fuck that little tramp. There are plenty of 24 year old white trash unwed mothers who have more education than her and could use the publicity.

99 Virginia Dreaming  Jun 30, 2015 9:02:27pm

I think the odds of these being unrelated, accidental fires are pretty similar to the odds that Donald Trump will win his 500 million dollar lawsuit against Univision.

It always is when a major player in the story is Princess Dumbass of the North Woods. By contrast the wedding that was the major event for the Robertson’s of Duck Dynasty generated a large number of pics that are surprisingly fun to see. It’s still a wingnut family, but at least they can manage an event like that and come across having some charm, as opposed to the cluelessness of the Palin’s and the creepy ‘cleanliness’ of the Duggars.

It isn’t, but we’re not dealing with a first-class mind here.

As an aside, for states that allow sound suppressors, there is now a viable suppressor for a 12-gauge. Attaching one of those is the only way to fire a shotgun while pregnant and avoid fetal hearing damage.

Right. Take SSM. They insist with zippo evidence that churches will forced to perform same sex marriages or that same sex marriage is an attack on their liberty. That’s the most infuriating thing, I agree.

The religious aspect confounds us more rational people. One fundie tenet is that Jay-sus will return to Earth once everyone in the world becomes Christian. Then there will be a Judgment, and all the people who didn’t make the cut will be stuck slogging around on Earth. So, I suppose they get all upset about SSM and Teh Gheyz because they see it as a delay in the Second Coming timetable, since gheyz can’t be Christians.

Or something.

It depends on which End Timer you read. Either gays will bring down God’s terrible wrath RIGHT NOW, or they will postpone the Second Coming, which the fundies say they want RIGHT NOW but don’t really mean it.

Getting out the message, one tiny podcast at a time

GotNwes has watched yet another podcast interview with Chuck C. Johnson, just to see if he said anything different this time.

Nope.

The Award Winning Journalist™ sat down for an interview with John Malos on Fresno’s public access MeTV (how the mighty have fallen!) the day before yesterday, apparently as some kind of political commentator.

Missouri Supreme Court denies GotNewsDotCom access to shooting victim’s juvenile records

Banned from Twitter, his website GotNewsDotCom dead in the water, Award Winning JournalistTM Chuck C. Johnson continues to crash and burn.

The Missouri Supreme Court yesterday refused to consider a legal appeal by Johnson to open the juvenile records of shooting victim Michael Brown, the Ferguson, MO, man who was shot and killed by police office Darren Wilson in August last year.

Johnson had been trying to gain access to Brown’s juvenile records for months, for the simple reason that he believed Brown had committed some foul crime as a youngster, so shooting him was entirely justified because white cops can do no wrong and young black men do it all the time.

The state supreme court denied Johnson’s petition for writ of prohibition and/or mandamus, which is a fancy legal way of saying, “We don’t consider this case worth our time. The appeals court ruling stands. Now go away.”

Calm down everybody….this is just the seventh “isolated incident”.

150 ObserverArt  Jul 1, 2015 4:40:00am

Morning.

The news about the burning churches is really freaking sad. I had the Today show on (and I don’t know why…hard to break old habit) and they teased the story with “Lightening strike or Intentional?”

Maybe I’m getting way too suspicious, but even the arrangement of lightening before intentional pissed me off.

Hello. Many Black churches burned in the south since the shootings in South Carolina brought focus on that damn X-rag flag and then a church that was burned down 20 years ago goes up in flames. But hey, it could be lightening. One has to ask questions. We can’t get the story wrong.

I wonder if there was even any lightening in the damn area.

That is why I mentioned upthread about doing a Google search on “KKK night riders” because burning Black churches and even Black homes was somewhat common with the hooded idiots back in the day. The night riders was a common term for the scum that attacked in the dark in their hoods so they couldn’t be seen by the town folk.

Why didn’t they want to be seen? Well, they had to be able to walk around town in the morning and say “Howdy mam, sir” to all the people and act like they were sugary sweet nice people. Proper respect and all.

Gah! Fuck ‘em all to hell.

(Sorry…not a good way to start the morning…but damn.)

Damn. Earlier there was a report that a huge fire was under a bridge off our major outer belt 1-270 over Interstate 70 on the west side of Columbus. It had both roads closed down since around 6:00 AM.

They just showed they finally got the fire out and the remains of a tanker truck. Not much left. That was a hot one. Must have been a full fuel (gasoline) load.

Doesn’t look like I-70 is going to be opening back anytime soon. The bridge supports look like they took some major heat and are probably weakened. What a mess. That’s going to screw up traffic on the entire west side of the city if they end up having to repair the bridge. As some of you know, I-70 is one of America’s major east to west highway systems.

It looks like the trucker came down the ramp from I-70 and lost control just off the ramp, crossed the road and slammed the rig and overturned it on the concrete wall on the far side of the road. I wonder if he was just going too damn fast and the fuel load shifted and took him right off the road.

How many predominantly black churches have to burn before people notice that there’s a real serious problem? We’re up to 7 just since the Charleston church massacre.

You’d think that after the 2d or 3rd, you’d see a trend forming and the media picking up on this as a national story. If they can spend disproportionate time on a CVS or quickie mart burning during Ferguson or Baltimore, you’d think that they might attempt to connect the dots and see that there’s some seriously screwed up racists in this country who are likely targeting blacks and black churches in an attempt to intimidate and deny them their civil rights.

Yep I-70 runs through my town to a busy Interstate.

The lab grade alcohol we used when I was teaching science had a colorant in it, so we at least had a fighting chance of seeing it burn bluish. Our chem teacher liked to pour some on the lab bench and ignite it with a Bunsen burner sparker.

I used a spark from a tesla coil, being the physics guy.

Meanwhile, it appears that ISIL has been quite busy in the Sinai. Yesterday, there were reports that dozens of power line towers were hit with a string of bombs knocking out power. Today, there were coordinated attacks against a bunch of security checkpoints, and at least 55 were killed and dozens more injured.

Egyptian security forces took it on the chin but they have vowed to go after ISIL. This all comes just days after another bombing killed a state prosecutor (and subsequent arrests).

Anonymous threats to female pastors is certainly a wonderful way to honor the traditions and high moral values of the old South. Nylon grows better in tropical climates. There are vast nylon plantations in some parts of Sri Lanka, for example.

Some farmers have found success rotating nylon crops with rayon, every three years or so.

That we’re finally opening an embassy in Cuba shouldn’t be reason to complain - that it took decades is.

It doesn’t mean things are hunky dory or that everything is copacetic. The Cubans are harboring a woman involved in a brutal killing of a NJ cop, and extradition should be done. But this is a good start towards better relations and trade between countries that are but a few miles apart.

What could possibly go wrong:

The reasons the FAA can’t get its new ATC system in place is because GOP budget cuts have meant the FAA doesn’t have the resources to put the new systems in place - and to overcome problems in engineering a new system while keeping the other in place until NexGen is in place.

These nitwits think that privatizing the FAA’s ATC system will somehow free up funds or make things more cost effective? HA! It’s just a lame attempt to take the item off the budget ledger and shift costs elsewhere - likely through higher fees imposed by localities or the new entity itself that isn’t going to be included in the budget process.

And in no way does this get NexGen done any faster.

Obviously, people are on edge after the Charleston shooting. Still, it’s not clear if there really has been an upswing in Church fires recently or if it’s just the media paying closer attention because of recent events.

vox.com
(I know, VOX. But still important to remember).

According to the National Fire Protection Association (via the Los Angeles Times’s Matt Pearce), firefighters responded to an average of 1,600 fires at churches a year from 2007 to 2011. That comes out to an average of 31 fires a week.

Sixteen percent of fires at churches and funeral homes (the latter is much less common) were intentionally set. That’s an average of five intentional fires a week, or 256 a year — causing an average of three civilian injuries annually.

A synthetics farm.

They rotate crops too. Rayon, Nylon, Dacron, Kevlar, Spandex all coming form the nylon, polyester, acrylic, acetate and latex plants.

Since rayon is made from cellulose (primarily wood pulp, but also bamboo) it is actually grown. It is then chemically processed and extruded from spinnerettes to form fibers.

I don’t know. You’re assuming that: a) they realize the ramifications, and b) they give a shit.

The GOP is nothing but a fear based, old people’s party (their major demographics). If they go away from what they do now…what happens to them? They will literally go the way of the Whigs, they’ll splinter completely. There’ll be a teabagger type party and the saner ones will likely be absorbed into the Dems. There wouldn’t be enough support to have a mainstream GOP. For primaries maybe…but not if there’s a far right for them to migrate to.

Foxette idiot of the day (of course, it’s early yet, and I’m not sure Andrea Tantaros has checked in)

Just a sampling:

“America isn’t a racist country, not even close,”

American history includes slavery and racism, but its current status and future as a whole does not.”

America had the dignity to end slavery through a civil war

talkingpointsmemo.com

Yes, the Civil War was such a “dignified” occurrence. Sigh.

re: #310 JadeHelmCurious

So the Civil War wasn’t about slavery. It was about teh gheys.

Right.

Actually the doofus meant Yankee dead (since those were the ones fighting to end slavery ie anti-slavery is “christian lifestyle”). Not mentioned: the anti-christian southern lifestyle.

Edited for clarity.

What could possibly go wrong:

[Embedded content]

I must make sure to get the immigration paperwork done. I don’t want my wife flying in american airspace for much longer.

I think the “journalists” were particularly offended because Sorkin had their numbers and they couldn’t stand the glare. Jack Mirkinson, who was writing at HuffPo at the time (not sure where he is now) would do the weekly reviews, and he was just fit to be tied with his Sorkin hate. He would go into great detail pointing out “factual” discrepancies, no matter how many times commenters would alert him to the fact that it was a TV drama show, not a news report.

Christie blames liberals and NJ Democrats for his poor polling. Right. That’s some serious straight talk there Chris. Maybe you ought not be writing checks your ego can’t cash. You’ve assumed that everyone would cede their own nominations to yours, but it hasn’t worked out that way.

You couldn’t even control the news cycle for 24 minutes, let alone 24 hours as none other than the GOP ID - Donald Trump had to go all lawsuit-y over being canned from NBC/Universal. Trump sucked all the air out of the room, not like you were doing that great for months of polling had you barely registering above the margin of error.

Which, come to think of it, is a better description of the GOP field - it’s a margin of errors (like a murder of crows or a herd of deer).

Fountain went on: “I’ve issued marriage licenses to couples that I’ve had in court for beating each other up. I’ve issued to people that have lived together for 20 years. … Did I get ugly phone calls and blasted on [Facebook] for issuing them? No!!”

Indeed

In a review of Hood County Clerk Katie Lang’s emails obtained through an information request, her comments to staff were strident: “We are not issuing them because I am instilling my religious liberty in this office.”

(She relented Tuesday and said her office will issue the licenses.)

I haz all the religious libertees and I will install them and they cannot be uninstalled even with computer program!!!111

That decline since about 2008 shows how Obama has flooded America with illegals.

“Unauthorized immigrants make up 5.1% of the U.S. labor force. In the U.S. labor force, there were 8.1 million unauthorized immigrants either working or looking for work in 2012. Among the states, Nevada (10%), California (9%), Texas (9%) and New Jersey (8%) had the highest shares of unauthorized immigrants in their labor forces.”

That decline was caused by the Invisible Hand swatting all those immigrants back across the border. Obama’s policies have nothing to do with it.

I’d love to see just one state have the balls to secede again.

I’m sure THAT would go over well.

I’m of the opinion, “Let them go.”

Since they’ll almost certainly be a red state that means they’ll be heavily dependent on federal dollars. Let’s see how long they last without that money coming in.

No, there’s enough to elect a Conservative government and keep them in power for a decade.

But that’s mostly because the Liberals had made themselves really unpopular and many Canadians think of the NDP as ‘commies’.

But after a decade the Conservatives have made themselves even more unpopular than the Liberals and as the Alberta election shows people are starting to think maybe we could use a little socialism.

I have to disagree with the last part. The conservative vote split between the Wild Rose (Canadian teabaggers) and the PC (Progressive Conservatives - yeah, go figure - who are really more like US blue dogs) which resulted in a Liberal win. I don’t think that would have happened if the right and the far right had stayed together.

Divorce…it’s such a difficult time. :-)

I hope the gal in Alberta does amazing things and can get reelected. That would show that the Conservatives are in a major world of hurt.

NDPs won in Alberta, not the Liberals.

The NDP are left of the Liberals. You are right though, the left won because the Alberta Tea Party swallowed a lot of Conservative votes.
