Tech Note: LGF Pages Unlimited

No more URL limits

After adding the new feature to LGF Pages that lets you capture HTML code automatically, I realized it exacerbated a problem that had always been in the LGF Pages posting window; if you tried to select more than about 8K of text, you see an error message saying “Request-URI Too Large.” Which sounds a little obscene, but just means that the address line exceeded the (rather inadequate) limit imposed by web servers and browsers.

And the new feature that includes HTML code actually makes this worse, because that HTML code can really eat up the characters.

After trying a bunch of different approaches, I hit on an arcane Javascript trick that lets me use a dynamically created HTML form that sends the selected text to the LGF Pages posting window with the POST method (instead of the GET method used by a URL), and now … voila! no more limits.

To celebrate this lifting of the URI Too Large limit, I’ve also increased the size your LGF Pages can be, to 100K from its previous limit of 32K. So now, you can write that Great American Novel that’s been struggling to get out of your brain into an LGF Page. Have at it.

You’ll need to reinstall the bookmarklet to take advantage of these new features; just right-click on the existing one in your browser’s bookmarks bar and delete it, then drag the button in the right sidebar labeled “Create A Page” into the bookmarks bar and you’re done.

Ugh. I hadn’t read that Wikipedia entry in a long time. It’s gotten even more biased and unfair than I remember. Whoever’s been editing it seems to have a real grudge against me.

Can’t you edit it yourself and fix some of the inaccuracies…or is that a losing battle with the Wikipedia editors?

You’re not supposed to edit your own entries. I’ve been around and around with them before. A lot of Wikipedia’s editors are assholes, to be frank.

Look at how they describe the Dan Rather story:

LGF was one of four sources, along with the Power Line and Allahpundit blogs and the Free Republic discussion forum, who conducted the initial investigation of Dan Rather’s assertions on 60 Minutes that the Killian documents were genuine.

Fucking ridiculous.

I love how they have an entire section about me “deleting posts,” when there are THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of posts that were never deleted and are still available online. This is one of the things I argued with them about before — no other blogger gets this kind of treatment from Wikipedia, even though many of them perform wholesale deletions of posts far more extensive than anything I’ve ever done.

I had good reasons for deleting every single post I’ve ever deleted, and I’ve left enormous amounts of stuff online that I’d rather wasn’t there. I shouldn’t have read that crappy entry; it just put me in a bad mood, following Ari Melber mischaracterizing me.

It’s a first step. We need many, many more.

If it’s a warm winter and it rains up there, the snow that falls now isn’t going to help much come spring.

I realize, but if you want to try, be prepared to need to know the rules extensively, spend a lot of time arguing about why the point of view you’re espousing is neutral, have lots of sources other than LGF at the ready, and probably still get ignored/have your edits reversed/possibly banned from the site.

Sample email

If you’re going to try, amend slowly. It’s less likely to be outright reverted.

A long time ago, I was active on Wikipedia as an administrator. Editing has its own strange and complex subculture. Don’t be surprised if you get involved in a protracted “edit war,” especially if the individuals that have an interest in maintaining the biased/inaccurate info are paying close attention.

Cite your sources according to the rules, though, and you should prevail. Eventually.

Also, if someone reverts what you do, DON’T revert their revert; bring it up on the talk page and be prepared to discuss/back-up with sources, etc.

Reverting reverts is an excellent way to get suspended/blocked.

And too many folks suddenly showing interest would be a good way to have the people with an interest in maintaining it as is start crying bias and collusion, and getting administrators involved and locks on the page.

I’m really having trouble understanding the economic model CCJ uses for his business.

So let’s pretend that he really does pay someone $1000 for a name. Then what? He posts it on his stupid blog?

Big Whoop. So how does he make money from that? Does he threaten to blackmail the person? I really doubt it.

So how exactly does he make a living from posting on his poop sheet?

So my attempt at starting off with 15 minutes on the rower this morning was a bit excessive. I gave it 5 minutes this morning, another 5 when I got home, and I’ll build up from that.

Rowing is one of the toughest cardo workouts you can do. It’s a whole body workout, and is a tremendous conditioner.

Start slow, and spend the first week just getting the body used to doing it. Then don’t add more than 10% a week. Every 4 weeks or so, drop it back for a week by about 30 percent, then pick up where you left off. Over the long run it’s the best way to build condition without over training and getting burned out.

The thing that seriously pisses me off about this is that when this comes out the country is again going to completely gloss over the social heath discussion surrounding addiction and HIV. We’re going to make it about the personality, and the reckless decision making that led to their infection, and not the social policies we perpetuate that demonize addicts instead of treating addiction like a disease. Which in turn needlessly allows drug addiction to flourish as a vector for devastating bacterial and viral diseases.

Supposedly he does “research” for others, and charges for it. His site has some ad revenue, which explains his constant ploy of posting clickbait stories to drive traffic. Losing Twitter as a traffic driver really cut into his clicks, I suspect. But if he didn’t have a working spouse and a home to live in, he’d be close to destitute. I suspect he gets some help from the RW welfare machine.

Offering $1K for a name is begging for trouble, though. There are plenty of Hollywood playboys, after all.

Bubbs replied back, “well, Mr. president, do what I do-I bang my schlong against the bedpost three times and all is well.”

Later that night, as the Reagans retied for bed and the lights went out, Ron, remembered what Bubba said and gave his manhood 3 good beatings against the bedpost.

Nancy was famous in Hollywood for the best BJs.

There you go, Eric The Fruit Bat, I think you can remove the private tags in your #137. It’s appropriate for public consumption.

Alouette, you crack me up sometimes!

That is a godawful ugly jacket Ronnie is wearing there.

Matches his boots, his face, and his soul.

Ah, the ol’ switcheroo!

There’s a method to all this, and yet it’s pretty darned free-for-all. You’d understand if you read LGF daily for many years.

I detect a bit of cattiness to the lady’s remarks. Perhaps some lingering animosity towards The Donald?

Yeah, Ginger Snapped offers a $1,000 check.

Problem is that check has more rubber in it than 1,000 condoms!

Oh, that woman.

Although Kelley has been called “the consummate gossip monger, a vehicle for all the rumor and innuendo surrounding her illustrious subjects”[1] she maintains, “I am an unabashed admirer of transparency and believe in the freedom guaranteed by the First Amendment”[2] and, to that end, her writing is about “moving an icon out of the moonlight and into the sunlight”. However, as her work endured more scrutiny, many of the facts she reported did not hold up.[1]

Heat and stir is a common instruction for soup. We appropriated the phrase for making karated gold to order, like short order cooking. The stove is just a tad hotter.

FWIW, about 25 years ago I was stationed in Sharm el-Sheikh Egypt with the MFO (Camp David Accords). That was where the flight originated. There was nothing there to speak of, a couple of beach hotels / cabanas. It was a super cheap vacation spot for Euros, sort of like our version of Panama City Beach. I was working at what is now the International Airport, at the time there was nothing flying in or out but the MFO Helo’s and the resupply flights from north camp.

My how things have changed. I’d love to go back and dive there.

A former student, now living in San Francisco, just got her green card. She is delighted!

She’s an example of how China’s restrictive and out-of-date college education system drives young Chinese to study abroad. Koko (her English name) wanted to study fashion design or fashion merchandising, but these majors are not common at all in China. So, she studied Business English first in junior college (3 years), then got a bachelor’s (2 more years). During one of those BA years, she was an exchange student at Delaware State University, where she was able to take some art and design classes. Then, she was admitted to a fashion school in SF — I forget which one. Meanwhile, she got married and just gave birth to a baby boy girl.

Another American success story.

Ralph Nader thinks Fed chair, Janet Yellen should sit down and talk with her husband about raising the interest rate. Also, she should talk to Robert Reich.

What a clueless jerk he is.

Chairwoman Yellen, I think you should sit down with your Nobel Prize winning husband, economist George Akerlof, who is known to be consumer-sensitive. Together, figure out what to do for tens of millions of Americans who, with more interest income, could stimulate the economy by spending toward the necessities of life.

For heaven’s sake, you’re a “liberal” from Berkeley! That is supposed to mean something other than to be indentured by the culture and jargon of the Federal Reserve. If you need further nudging on monetary and regulatory policies of the Fed, other than interest rate decisions, why not invite Berkeley Professor Robert Reich, one of your long-time friends and admirers, to lunch on your next trip home?

As a card-carrying woman, I’ll certainly agree with the “jerk” part (he could have phrased that a whole lot better), but I think I’ll give him a pass on the cluelessness. For this one example, anyway. If I were trying to convince someone that their economic ideas/policy is wrong, I’d turn to economists to make the argument, as did (shudder) Ralph Nader.
