LAS VEGAS, NV — Speaking to the Republican Women’s Club in a mall on the glitzy Las Vegas Strip, retired neurosurgeon and presidential hopeful Dr. Ben Carson repeated a debunked theory that Muslim immigrants have taken control of neighborhoods in major European cities, and warned a similar pattern could arise in the U.S.

“Everyone is welcome in America if they’re willing to assimilate, but we don’t want the kind of situation that has occurred in Great Britain where you have 85 sharia courts and no-go areas and things like that,” Carson told the room of mainly older Republican women. “That doesn’t make sense for the United States of America, which is the great melting pot.”

That’s a guaranteed rabble-rouser. It evokes images of public beheadings, stoning adulteresses and forced Muslim prayer.

What it means is that there are civil courts where Muslims can voluntarily seek a decision on family or business matters which are nonetheless still subject to civil jurisdiction.

I must admit that I still have some issues with it, especially as involves Muslim women being socially pressured to accept a marriage or family settlement from a Sharia judge, but it is not the major bugaboo that people make it out to be.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) quietly signed two pieces of legislation Wednesday that dramatically alter the election and campaign finance landscape in the state.

The first new law dismantles the nonpartisan Government Accountability Board — an independent elections and ethics panel — which has been held up as a national model because it’s run by six former judges rather than partisan political appointees.

In its place will be two different commissions overseeing ethics and elections, ran mostly by partisan appointees put in place by the governor and legislative leaders.

The second law relaxes campaign finance rules, doubling the limit for individual contributions, eliminating the requirement that donors must identify their employer and allowing corporate donations to political parties and legislative campaign committees.

Walker held no public ceremony for these dramatic changes, signing the bills in a private event [guilty conscience!]. The Associated Press noted that news of the signings came from a tweet from the author of the GAB legislation. Walker’s office later put out statements confirming what he had done.

Look who is back in the news…not surprised at all
Affluenza boy has apparently disappeared and not been in contact with his probation officer (violation of probation)…mommy seems to have fallen off the map.

This comes after video popped up of affluenza boy boozing it up at a party (violation of probation)

Hopefully they scoop douche-boy up, and he gets to serve the remainder of his ten-year probation behind bars. Where he should have gone after killing those four people

The answer is right there in the cited article:

Common Cause Wisconsin, a group that focuses on campaign finance and election reform, said the two laws “were designed for one purpose only: to consolidate and maintain one party political control of Wisconsin as we head into a critical Presidential election year.”

“This will be remembered as one of the saddest and darkest chapters, at the end of one of the most horrendous legislative floor periods, in our state’s 167-year history — when honest, accountable and transparent state government was systematically dismantled in favor of hyper-partisan political advantage, retroactive decriminalization, and revenge,” the group said in a statement.

I’m not a fan when it comes to family law issues, with one exception: if there is a pre-nup with a choice of law provision. Even then, I’m not wild about them. But US law allows contracting parties to impose choice of law and choice of venue provisions within negotiated contracts. Usually that means the contract is governed by California or New York law, or whatever, and must be heard in a court of competent jurisdiction in designated places. But it can be used for sharia or halakhah or Roman Catholic canon law (though I suspect the whole “no divorce” thing would not fly).

Okay, I’ve been threatening to put up some of the music on the CD my buddies and I put together over the last couple years. We are a group of friends that have been in bands together since the late 70s, off and on. In the early 90s one of the guys purchased an Otari 1/2” 8-Track recorder and we made a cassette under the name The Glee Club. That didn’t last long though as one of the guys quit and everyone was deep into families and jobs.

But we never stopped jamming and writing and recording. In 2006 we put together a CD under the name The Band That Never Was. It was decent, but we were still learning to record and mix and produce a finished project. I am eventually going to put up some of the better songs on Soundcloud from that project as I think the performances and the writing were pretty good but the final recording wasn’t all that good.

Keep in mind this has all been a Friday night get together to party and have fun, sort of a guys night out from families and jobs. The two married dudes wives were glad to get them out of the house!

Since 2010, we started this current project, but one of the guys retired from playing and that caused another to give up. Getting old sucks. We gave up on the name The Band That Never Was and worked over last winter to polish off some of the recordings and get them digitized and finish up this CD project.

I know we have a lot of cat and other pet lovers, so please let me tell you about the name of our studio. When I bought this 100 year old house that stood open to people ripping off some of the fixtures and other stuff (it was a rough neighborhood) many years ago, I wanted to put a small studio in the basement. In the one main room we play in there was the dried and fuzzy remains of a cat that had gotten into the house and died in the corner of the room. Thus the name of the studio became Dead Cat Studio. Since we do not consider ourselves great musicians and singers, just guys having fun, I always said we had that “dead cat sound.” Rrawrrrr!

So I finally got a little logo designed for the Studio and set up some files at Soundcloud. We decided to call it Dead Cat Studio as a project name more than a band name. I want to share a tune or so, but keep in mind this is a home recording by a bunch of music hacks. If you find it offensive, I’ll not subject the lizards to too much. If you like them (in context) I’ll share some more. So, let me know what you think. I’m a little shy to do this…but here goes.

The first one is a little countryish. It’s called my situation. Yours truly on drums and backing vocals. One Friend on lead vocals and lead guitar, another on guitar number two and another on bass and backing vocals. The CD is named “…but not the least.” Hit the big red arrow top left to play.

Not a bad strategy, actually. The only problem here is that she’s wasting her GOP super-lying powers on pointless trivia about Generals.

Here is another with me on main vocal. Backups by the lead and bass players. I wrote this one based on an idea from the bass player that always cringed when his father in law visited. The father in law’s nickname…”Big.” I’m not a great singer, but I enjoy trying!

He’s got such a good voice. For all its edge, his pitch is so true, and his vibrato is about perfect.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney (R) on Monday denounced real estate mogul Donald Trump’s plan to restrict all Muslims from immigrating to the U.S., pointing out that the U.S. has always welcomed people of all religions.

“I think this whole notion that somehow we can just say no more Muslims, just ban a whole religion, goes against everything we stand for and believe in,” he told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. “I mean, religious freedom has been a very important part of our history and where we came from. A lot of people, my ancestors got here, because they were Puritans.”

Carly Fiorina has decided to try to win the GOP nomination by telling lies that are outrageously false, beyond the capacity of even a GOP spin-meister to defend.

Not a bad strategy, actually. The only problem here is that she’s wasting her GOP super-lying powers on pointless trivia about Generals.

If she were serious about the nomination, it would have been non-stop ‘Planned parenthood is selling the baby parts for the big bucks’ all last night.

Nobody that mattered would have cared that this would have been totally off-topic for a foreign policy debate.

I saw a video in which a woman was forcibly impregnated, held in a PP dungeon for 8 months, then her octuplets were forcibly removed and carved up alive so that eight sets of baby parts could be sold to pay for the directors new Lamborghini!

Chicken hawks all. You’d think they’d be a little sheepish speaking like great tough warriors, but not this group.

That’s one thing I like about Obama. He always seems to consider any military action thoroughly and is aware of his own background. He never gloats and always gives the military the credit they deserve like he did when they took out Bin Laden.

No, that was done after we put the analog tape into our digitizer and the lead player did that through a Line 6 Pod directly into the computer.

I don’t do any guitar on these songs. I’m just drums and vocals. The next project, if we ever get it finished, will be more me on guitar too. Since it will be down to just two of us, we are going to go for a more stripped down rootsy sound. I want way more singular isolation of the sounds. Plus, I am going to try to do the mixes. The lead player on this project did the mixing.

The GOP primary has made clear the need for adding a new word to the language.

Like we have a gaggle of geese and a pride of lions, we need a proper collective term for multiple chicken hawks in one place (like at the GOP debate).

One possibility, to hopefully get the ball rolling:

A defecation of chicken hawks.

Sounds good. Was that one of the red ones? I still do all of my recording through mine, the first version. I’ve fallen out of love with the Line 6 stuff, but those old Pods still sound good.

The mix on the first one sounds good. Now that it’s halftime at the Knicks game, I’ll go check the other one. :)

Speaking of Knicks - Porzingas has got 6 block in the half. He’s keeping Towns pretty quiet tonight. They’re billing it as the battle of potential Rookies of the Year, but KP’s got the edge tonight.

re: #100 ObserverArt

As Charles noted, sounds like you had fun. That’s one reason I got my kids involved with band, choir, etc. as soon as possible. Making music is such a different experience than just listening. I’ve learned a number of different instruments over the years, allowing me to participate in performing everything from classical to rock. There’s an impact to live performances that recordings just can’t provide, especially for musicians. And helping to make that noise, IMHO, is an exhilarating experience.

Personally I enjoy folks posting about and sharing their hobbies and interests. With the current state of politics, a little art and culture is a needed brain cleanse.

So thanks for posting those. And while I understand the perfectionist tendencies that might make you reluctant, overall I think the lizards are gentle folk. Besides, we all can’t be perfect like Trump.
