BREAKING: Houston Grand Jury Indicts Center for Medical Progress Head David Daleiden

Scammers going down
US News • Views: 52,862

Houston Chronicle reporter Brian Rosenthal just tweeted out this amazing news; the Houston grand jury investigating Planned Parenthood in the wake of the Center for Medical Progress’ “sting” videos has declined to indict Planned Parenthood — but they are indicting CMP head David Daleiden and accomplice Sandra Merritt on charges of “tampering with a governmental record” and “purchase and sale of human organs!”

Oh man, that’s gotta hurt. This dishonest anti-choice scam is collapsing in a big way.

UPDATE at 1/25/16 3:34:59 pm by Charles Johnson

And now an arrest warrant has been issued for David Daleiden:

UPDATE at 1/25/16 4:05:01 pm by Charles Johnson

Brian Rosenthal points out that the felony Daleiden and Merritt are charged with carries a possible sentence of 20 years in prison.

Well, AM radio drifted towards wingnuts because the majority of the population that still listened to over-the-air broadcasting listen to music on FM.

Online I think the same thing happens. The wingnuts hang out in certain corners on Facebook, but don’t venture out into other areas.

If all a person does is listen to AM talk radio, and read self-referencing websites within certain epistemic bubbles (such as Salem Communications), then said listener/reader won’t realize the rest of the world is different.

Scientists Genetically Engineer Autistic Monkeys

This isn’t really off-topic.

The masses who are the marks for Daleiden’s gimmick are not accepting what has been discovered the past century. The idea of “a person” has been transformed by what we have discovered.

The religious want to cling to the idea that we are “knit together” in the womb by the Hand of God.

As quaint as that literary creation is in the Jewish scriptures, it does not reflect reality.

What it means to be “a person” is important, I think.

But almost certainly a small collection of cells will not qualify for being “a person”. Thus complete rejection of all abortions doesn’t have the necessary facts to back up such a position.

And this is what the anti-abortionists can not face. They will not and can not accept that at one time they too were not “a person”.

So they go to great lengths to delude themselves and others.

And that is why Daleiden’s dishonesty is overlooked by them.

It’s been Burn’s Night tonight in Scotland. Here’s a photo I took from a local Burn’s Night tonight, during a performance of his meisterwerk “Tam O’ Shanter”:

If you’re not aware of Robert Burn’s “Tam O’ Shanter”: it’s regarded as his “epic” work. Well, it’s epic in comparison to his other poems, but it’s like one of those rock artists that are known for concise 3-4 minute songs doing a 7 minute song, just to show how it’s done. “Tam O’ Shanter ” like that: a rollicking story in Scots, a novel length story in verse packed into 12 mins max. Here’s Brian Cox’s recital. This is the version you hear in the Burn’s Museum just outside Ayr in Scotland.

Tam o’Shanter

Yeah, but we know how these things go. Even in reddest of Wingnuttia, there are always closeted liberals working tirelessly to destroy all that is good and right, so even when a Republican’s fingerprints are all over the evidence, it’s a liberal plot.

Like clockwork:

Another Year, Another Anti-Evolution Bill in Oklahoma

[…]

But as Brecheen’s anti-evolution bills have repeatedly fizzled before becoming law, he has taken to adopting (slightly) more subtle tactics. In the 2016 version, instead of advancing an outright endorsement of creationism, the more euphemistic purpose of Brecheen’s Senate Bill 1322 is:

to create an environment within public school districts that encourages students to explore scientific questions, learn about scientific evidence, develop critical thinking skills and respond appropriately and respectfully to differences of opinion about controversial issues. … Teachers shall be permitted to help students understand, analyze, critique and review in an objective manner the scientific strengths and scientific weaknesses of existing scientific theories covered in the course being taught.

As with the intelligent-design debate, there is no supremacy of fact; there are only “opinions about controversial issues.” And even if poor, God-fearing teachers are forced to discuss those pesky “existing scientific theories” of how the world was created, they are also allowed to discuss the potential “weaknesses” of said theories (like, say, their making no appearance in Genesis) without repercussions.

[…]

As I noted upstream, the God-fearing folk like Brecheen just don’t want to accept what we have discovered the past century (or two.)

They just don’t want to.

That’s how being in a cult works. Everyone who doesn’t share to the cult’s absurd beliefs must be an untrustworthy other. If they accept info from outside the cult, the cult collapses.

I hoped improved communications would be the end of cults, but it turns out that a lot of people really want to believe that they’re special when they’re not.

Of course, depends on who you follow. I still prefer live music over the studio: Bob Schneider, Counting Crows, Pearl Jam, Billy Joel, Black Crows, Foo Fighters, Cheap Trick, etc., etc., Yet, I don’t follow much of today’s pop “music” icons so you’re probably dead-on with today’s music.

Trump’s official campaign spokeswoman, Katrina Pierson, took to Twitter to refer to President Obama as being the “head Negro in charge” while lamenting that the United States needs a “pure breed” President instead. When she was later given a chance to walk those comments back, she instead doubled down on them and referred to Obama as a “half breed.” Again, this woman is the top spokesperson for the entire Donald Trump campaign, and not some errant staffer. It’s not the first time this week that Trump and company have gone off the racist rails.

I think she finally deleted them.

I just watched Donald Trump win the Iowa caucus: Inside the one rally that sealed the deal

When Chuck Grassley spoke at a Trump rally, the calculus changed. There hasn’t been this much energy since Obama 08

If you don’t live in Iowa, you may not know what a political force Grassley is and what his presence on Saturday means for Trump. Grassley has served in the Senate since 1981. In his last election he won 64% of the vote, and his approval ratings hover near that number. He’s won re-election term after term, brushing Democratic challengers off like a piece of lint. One election year he received 70% of the vote, and in other years he came close. Just last week Grassley broke the record on not missing a vote in the U.S. Senate; 22 years, six months, and six days. He has voted 7,520 times without missing one. The last time he missed a vote was when he was touring the midwest in 1993 with President Bill Clinton during a disastrous flooding season. Since he took office in 1981 he tours all 99 counties in the state when the Senate is out of session. This is called the “full Grassley” and Republican caucus candidates try to emulate it. Sure, some of the big media likes to make fun of Grassley, his tweets, some things he says, and even his clothes. But we don’t care. He’s our Chuck Grassley. He’s one of us, and we all know and respect him and we don’t care what anyone else says. I have no doubt that Grassley has spoken with and shook hands with tens of thousands of Iowans or more. What he thinks and says means something to us.

Well, I guess we’ll see a week from now.

When the judge is the son of the county sheriff, it’s safe to say that criminal defense lawyers aren’t going to have the most optimistic feelings heading into court.

Same can be said for any court in TX. Guy could be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but TX is hard on the defense.

I used to read this blog (an attorney in Harris County) all the time. He’s kinda moved on to bigger and better but it was always fascinating to read his posts (and the attorney’s responding in comments). Really gave insight into law and order in TX.

Donald Trump suggests he may skip Fox debate if Megyn Kelly isn’t fair

Donald Trump said he would consider skipping this Thursday’s Republican primary debate if he doesn’t get fair treatment from Fox anchor Megyn Kelly — an apparent attempt to influence moderators at the final GOP debate before Iowa.

In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Monday, Trump continued to badmouth the Fox News host who had challenged him during the first Republican showdown last August.

“I don’t like her. She doesn’t treat me fairly. I’m not a big fan of hers at all,” Trump said.

lawhawk  Jan 25, 2016 • 3:30:30pm

Every state that has investigated Planned Parenthood has found zero evidence of criminality. No evidence that they broke federal laws relating to fetal tissue donations or anything else for that matter.

In fact, they’ve got a perfect record on that.

The same can’t be said of CMP and Daleidin, who are facing indictments not only in Texas (TEXAS!?!) but are under investigation elsewhere (CA), for breaking multiple state and federal laws.

Given that those forced birth/anti-choice extremists engaged in these bogus videos in multiple states, they’re facing the possibility of multiple charges/indictments in multiple states.

The extremists who continue claiming that there were illegal acts caught on tape were right. The video did show illegality. Only problem for them is that CMP was doing the illegality, and Planned Parenthood was not.

That wont stop fact-free diatribes from right wingers claiming this was a setup. The TX GOP demanded prosecutors in the state investigate the case.

They did. And found no wrongdoing by PP. They found, however, CMP did.

And it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of extremists.

Donald Trump and the GOP’s demographic trap

Donald Trump and the GOP’s demographic trap

As Timothy Carney details in a fascinating report today, Trump’s strategy appears premised on the idea that his mix of populism, protectionism, immigration restrictionism, and American-greatness nationalism is the secret to appealing to the mostly downscale white voters who stayed home in 2012. “Trump, it seems, has found the missing white voter,” Carney writes.

But if this is true, the question then becomes whether doing what it takes to find and activate this “missing white voter” could prove demographically counter-productive for the GOP — hence, the demographic trap.

National media are slowly, very slowly, edging to calling Trump out for his racist whistles.

it’s still going to take them some time to flat out state what Trump is.

re: #185 EPR-radar

I do think Trumpism is a one-time event. For decades before Trump, Republicans ran on dog-whistle appeals to racists to get them to vote their resentments. Trump has dispensed with the dog whistles. Future Republican campaigns aren’t going to be able to return to dog whistling, assuming Trump doesn’t crater instantly as soon as real votes start being cast.

This is the kind of thing that 538’s modeling can’t capture.

Modeling is also based on understanding how a system reacts to various inputs, actions and events. The problem is that Trump is so many SD’s away from anything that was considered a ‘norm’ that I really think the model couldn’t handle it.

The fact that the GOP is starting to view Trump as an ‘acceptable option’ just shows how far the gyros have tumbled.

I do agree, if he gets the nomination (and my gut feeling is that I’d need about 2-1 odds to bet on it), you know that he’s going to come crashing to earth at some point, and the GOP will only have themselves to blame.

I will be snickering quietly in the corner when that happens.

“School choice” goes as far as saying that people should be cut a check, which will be an arbitrary sum that most private schools will quickly raise their rates above to avoiding allowing most voucher-holders in, but charter schools (read: diploma mills) will be quick to snap up. The real school choice, improving the schools that need help rather than funneling most of the educational budget into richer neighborhoods, is never on the menu. Nor is cutting a big enough check that poorer families can afford to actually move to neighborhoods that surround those schools they want their child to attend.

“School choice” just like “Right to Work” is a bogus slogan for giving sweet, sweet gubmit moneys to Jesus Bible School.

Charles P. Pierce (with some love for plunderbund.com, which has been covering the horro of Kasich forever)

Plunderbund, a progressive blog covering Ohio politics, has been all over a story about how Ohio’s former school choice director, whose wife now manages Kasich’s presidential campaign, fudged the data he reported to the U.S. Department of Education in order to make Ohio’s charter system appear to be in compliance with the governor’s stated goals. While the story was restricted to the scurvy blog community, it could be safely ignored. But now the mainstream Ohio press is digging into it as well.

Damn, the threads are fast today. No way to read and catch up.

Just wanted to say with this Texas judgement against Daleiden it is nice to see that the law was followed. Followed as far as I can tell. Maybe they could have had more to hold against Center for Medical Process…to help paint that organization in a criminal manner.

I always have a hope that no matter what party someone is from they will follow the law. When someone takes office, the law is already there. No need for anything but following it and previous case precedent.

For a good portion of my like that has pretty much been the case. Since the slanting to the right with the Supreme Court my faith in the law being followed has been seriously challenged. The biggest challenge seems to come from the fundamental religious groups. My take…that is against the law. Read the damn Constitution.

So, it was good to see that a Republican prosecutor is following the law and not his party politics.

Let’s hope it stays that way. But it is Texas.

And slow down. I can’t read this fast…

“…Houston shows us the bipolarization of Texan metro areas; it’s the largest city in the state and the fourth-largest in the U.S. It’s in Harris County, which is the only county in Texas that had more than 1 million voters in the 2012 presidential election. Still, despite that massive electorate, the county as a whole lacks a clear political lean. In 2012, Obama won 49.39 percent of the vote, and Romney won 49.31 percent.

But that narrow margin is deceptive. Sure, Harris remains evenly split, but a closer look at Houston itself demonstrates that its political leanings — at least on a neighborhood level — tend to be bipolar; its suburbs lean right while the urban core leans left. This is not unusual by any means, but it’s an effect that’s not only constant statewide, it’s also Texas’s most important electoral phenomenon going forward. As the state becomes increasingly city-oriented, its elections will increasingly come down to urban and suburban voters. And if Houston serves as a guide, these two groups currently have different tastes in politicians.”

In which NRO’s Kevin Williamson asserts that Trump supporters are illiterate idiots:

Translating ‘Make America Great Again’ into English

This wingnut-on-wingnut action is coming hot and heavy now.

Williamson is pussy-footing around the main issue here. Trump’s “Make America Great Again” translates into English just fine:

Make America White Again.

Of course the GOP will continue to lie and demonize PP. Jim Jordan and the rest of the clowns on the committe that harassed Ms. Richards, tehre’s a special place for fuckers like them who tried to ruin the reputation of a woman who works for an organization that does so much for women’s health especially poor women but I guess that’s the problem. Can’t be helping people if you’re a Republican. Unless they’re rich white heterosexual Christians.

It’s something that a lot of Williamson’s former and perhaps current coworkers agree on but they’re better than Trump supporters see because they’re rich.

The NR crypto-fascists have only two problems with Trump.

1) He’s not a member of, or controlled by, the Republican establishment.

2) Trump is too open about the racism etc. and it’s going to be ever so difficult to get the GOP base to accept Establishment pink slime after having dined on fine red meat provided by Trump.

The people who have spent months telling us that grand juries are the final word on the validity of a criminal case and that a DA showing obvious bias does not invalidate a jury’s failure to indict…are going to yell and scream about how the grand jury system is rigged and DAs steer them wherever they want them to go.

412
jaunte  Jan 25, 2016 • 5:37:08pm

Figuring out the motivation for a Republican DA to steer the grand jury in this direction is going to take some time to gin up.
