Quote of the Day: Former House Speaker John Boehner Calls Ted Cruz “Lucifer in the Flesh”

“I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life”
Politics • Views: 52,587

Believe it or not, there’s actually somebody establishment Republicans loathe more than Donald Trump: that other guy running for president.

Former House Speaker John Boehner is unloading on Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, calling him “Lucifer in the flesh.”

“I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life,” Boehner tells students at Stanford University according to The Stanford Daily.

The Ohio Republican resigned last fall under pressure from conservatives allied with Cruz. Boehner’s well-known contempt for the Texan stems in part from Cruz’s role forcing a partial government shutdown in 2013. Boehner said he and Donald Trump are “texting buddies” and he would vote for Trump, but not Cruz.

Just saw Teddy claim he has never worked with Boehner. Ryan was asked about it and he said he can work with both of them.

Ryan doesn’t seem to have a bone in his body. About another year and I think Ryan will be despised by just about everybody for being a big nothing.

Lucifer called. He said stop using Cruz’s name like that. Lucifer called say that Cruz is giving Lucifer a bad name, as though he hasn’t done enough to make people suffer, hasn’t done enough to ruin the US economy during the government shutdown, and ruining the lives of minorities and women faster than Lucifer could normally account for.

Lucifer also said that he’s had more than 2,000 years of lurking in the shadows, and here comes Cruz getting all up in everyone’s face. That’s not good for Lucifer’s business. After all, Lucifer prefers to be like Keyser Soze.

But when asked who Lucifer would vote for in November, he gave a shrug and a wink.

The more you learn about Trump and his supporters, the more insane it is when you realize he’s going to be the GOP nominee. He’s incompetent, doesn’t understand basic facts about the US Government. Ignores US history. Doesn’t understand current US military doctrine especially as relating to nuclear weapons, Geneva Conventions, and counter terrorism. Doesn’t understand trade policy, which is particularly galling given that he claims to be a business wiz. Doesn’t understand foreign policy.

Doesn’t understand how courts work.

In short, Trump professes a worldview that is unhinged from reality. What’s worse - his supporters love him for that. They want someone that debased from reality.

That’s what the GOP has cultivated for years on end. And this is the result. A voter base that has picked the most extreme demagogue to ever be under consideration for a major party nomination in the history of the US - not that any of them would know the background of the “America First” mantra Trump trotted out yesterday.

I’m registered as independent/no party, and I don’t think primaries should be open. They aren’t for me. Why should I have a say in the inner workings of a political party that I can’t be bothered to even register under (which is the *only* requirement to vote in the primary).

My only problem with same day registration is when there aren’t separate lines.
Registered voters should not have to stand in line and wait to vote, while poll workers assist those who aren’t.

Open primaries really kind of defeats the purpose of a party primary. I admit I’ve sort of flip flopped on this since I used to favor open primaries but I’ve really thought about it hard and come to the conclusion that the nomination of a party’s candidate should be in the hands of those who are affiliated with it. Oh and what about caucuses, Bernie’s benefited from those and those are a hell of a lot more undemocratic than closed primaries are.

Honestly, it’s not even that he’s not a Democrat. It’s that he’s done so little to actually work on behalf of getting other like minded people elected or nominated. I think Bernie would rather act like it’s him against the world than actually have to share a stage with others. Dare I say it but Bernie has a bit of Ted Cruz in him in that I don’t think he values working with others. Maybe I am being harsh there but he has a lot of qualities in his character that I resent about politicians. Bernie whether he’ll admit it or not’s personality causes of a lot of the problems in Washington. I mean do I want someone to staunchly defend liberal values? You bet I do but Bernie’s an all or nothing type and I’m someone who wants to work with what we got to make things better.

Charles would be the better on to ask on database matters as he has a LOT more experience dealing with them than I do. I know there’s such a thing as “overhead’ and you can optimize your db to get rid of it, but I’m not sure if that would make exported backups smaller. If everything’s working fine I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

If the website is on a *nix machine and has cPanel installed (and you have access to it), then it’s pretty easy to trigger a nightly (or weekly, or whatever) automatic database dump with a cron job—it dumps the .sql file, zips it into a .bz2 file, then stores one copy on the server and emails the other to you. It can save your ass if there’s ever a catastrophic server failure and your db data is lost. It happened to us a couple of years ago—the hosting company was able to restore backups, but only ones that were a few months old. I was NOT a happy camper.

If you have that environment, I have a shell script that will take care of it for you, but you’ll need to set up cron job. A lot of *nix sites are configured the same way, so I’m able to use the script with sites on different (shared hosting) servers without changing them. Let me know if you want to try it.

CL, thanks.

I’m at DreamHost out in California. It only takes me a couple minutes to log in and make a .sql backup and download it to my computer where I keep about two weeks worth.

I also save the same files on a little hard drive and keep about two months worth of them there. I do it daily…so unless they get huge I have no problem getting them downloaded daily.

I can also trigger all my sites to save backups on the DreamHost servers where the stay for 10 days before being purged. That takes seconds by pushing a button and they send me an email automatically when they are finished.

I was just stumped by the newer .sql file being smaller than a previous backup and I thought maybe something was up. I wanted to have some assurance it could happen before I get way into building the Wiki and finding out something was fouling up and maybe it was getting corrupted.

Sounds like you have everything under control. Sometimes I forget that not everyone has to look after a dozen or more websites, half of which need daily db backups.

It’s good that you take backups seriously (too many people don’t).

I have several sites…but only three that I keep constant backups of the databases. Two daily one once a week as it is not all that busy. I have a phpBB forum and the new MediaWiki. The other is a small racing parts store.

All the others are static WordPress web sites with no blogging or eCommerce and no users that have admin capabilities. They are set to keep no one from commenting or setting up accounts. I keep them shut down so that I don’t get into the problems I saw you mentioning the other day. I also do complete site file backups of all of them monthly. It all keeps you busy. So, yeah dozens would be hectic.

re: #77 ObserverArt

That’s not uncommon with SQL database files from many platforms.
As the database is written and altered, it uses more disk space. If rows are deleted from the database later on, the database engine won’t try to shrink the SQL file, but will instead try to reuse the space, in place.

The lifetime of the SQL file is very long, and very active, and it won’t really shrink until you do what you described, shutting down the DB file to move it elsewhere.

If I remember MySQL, the export process literally creates a text file with a giant CREATE statement with all the tables of the DB in it. Any data that the export process can’t read is dropped on the floor. I’ve used this to carefully recover corruption.

I posted over on the old thread…. I was thinking that as content grew (especially repeated / duplicate type data strings) the compression ratio just got more efficient due to more redundency.

Just a SWAG on my part to be perfectly honest.

I don’t know if you caught my original comment from earlier today but the database is for a MediaWiki. I have added more pages over the last two weeks and the database backup (.sql file) is smaller today than two weeks ago. It caught me out.

It’s quite possible for a compressed file to actually get smaller even though the original uncompressed data is larger, because of the way compression works; as your data gets larger there are more repeated phrases and runs of characters that the compression algorithm can identify, so the compression becomes more efficient.

If you’re worried about it, just uncompress the file, load it into a text editor and scroll through it. You should be able to see if your data is all there, if it’s mostly text.

I’m growing to appreciate that sentiment, but as long as he doesn’t do something insane like a third-party presidential run, I don’t see any reason for that other than spite. We’ll have better places to spend our money in 2018 rather than trying to eject a guy who’s caucused with us for decades and will most likely be seeking his last term anyway. And it would piss off his supporters for basically no reason.

I have access to the complete database through the server. They have an export tab and a simple backup button. But, I can also mess with how the backup is setup.

You bring up a good point. Maybe it is incremental, and if I look at the more detailed settings I can see if it is incremental or partial.

That’s a damn good point. I’ll look into it further over the weekend. It makes sense as the database had original setup settings and a few pages. Today’s back up was just more pages…but the file size indicates it might be just the recent work.

That’s the worst part of this Bernie monster. I used to like him. I used to find him trustworthy. I used to like his policies. Now, everything he does and says is nothing more than noise.

He’s full of shit. His pie-in-the-sky policies will never be enacted and he gives false hope to millions. He’s a fucking liar. He’s uninformed (unacceptable for someone who’s been around as long as he has). He’s a horrible, selfish person. He’s Lonesome Rhodes.

That’s why the Ron Paul horde fell for him hook, line and sinker.

Chuck C. Johnson has now completely forgotten about his vow to bail out of Facebook because they were “enslaving” him. He’s retching up one crazed post after another. His bromance with Ted Cruz is over for good. He’s a Trump guy all the way now. It must have been wonderful for Chuck to realize there was a candidate aligned 100% with his racist views, who says it right out in the open and gets away with it.

That’s the big difference between Cruz and Trump — Cruz came up as a classic GOP politician, learning to hide the racism and hatred behind code words and weasel talk. Trump just fucking goes for it.

I’m probably being charitable with 10 years. I want no part of the NFL or any of the hoopla regarding the draft. There are players being picked now who will play a year or two in the league, be dropped like a rock, and left a cripple or worse in years to come.

This is one of the reasons I think Trump is running a con. He may be working for the establishment who finally realized they couldn’t continue to embrace the stupid and hope to keep a functional country.

So Trumps job is to go full Teatard, lose big, and let the party clean house.

Just sent a message to http://feelthebern.org/contact-us/. That is the Feel The Bern site where his volunteers work.

I wanted to let them to know I appreciate that they worked on a presidential campaign. I told them that the behavior of Bernie, Jane and Jeff Weaver is sad and they all deserve better. I hoped they use it all as a great learning experience and good luck in their futures.

I feel good about that. And I wanted to mention it here. I admire anyone that puts in that kind of time. Bernie is crapping on them…and I find it sad.

Sounds like you have a Nikon. I don’t recall ever seeing a macro/flower setting on my T3i (which doesn’t by any means indicate there isn’t one, I just haven’t noticed it if there is), but I do remember having one on my very first digital camera, which was a Nikon point-n-shoot (Coolpix 3100). My now ancient Canon point-n-shoot has a macro/flower setting as well.

Good point too. I can open the file as I do that at my forum from time to time to scroll through and identify newer posts, etc. to check.

Thanks all of you. I have a better feel for it now.

Woot!

Charles is correct WRT to compression ratio, but with a small (albeit pedantic) caveat. If the original data set is unchanged, and you add new data to it, the compressed size of the new set can NOT be smaller than the original - the best it can be is the same size (which is then a better compression ratio). To achieve that, all symbols in the additional data must be present in the original set (even then it could slightly increase in size). This is not really applicable to your situation because of the way a RDMS typically dumps data, so again, pedantic :). If the new data set size is more than 10% smaller than the original, and you are confident that you only added data to it, I would be suspicious and want to review it.

The point I would like to make however , is that a backup is not worth much if you don’t have a way to test it’s restoration to make sure it’s valid. I learned this the hard way a long time ago when trying to restore from a series of tape backups that had never been sufficiently validated. Doh!
