These damn busses are just getting too damn topheavy. They have to be perched up on top of a ladder frame, which has to be completely above these gigantic live axles (which suspension arrangement doesn’t help with stability at all.) They never heard of independent suspensions or unibody construction. Then they reinforce the roof, which just makes it more topheavy.

And screw you, spellcheck—“busses” does have two “s”s.

Cruz criticized Barack Obama for new public school guidelines that allow transgender students to use bathrooms that match their gender identity.

“There is nothing in the constitution that gives the president the power to be the bathroom police in this country,” he said.

“Principled” Ted Cruz can pander just as hard as Dan Patrick for that ginned-up bathroom panic vote.

I’m just trying to figure out what that means. “A link means nothing when most of the work is on the page?” It makes no sense; linking is practically everything in the Web world. Most authors would be complimented by getting a link to their content published on someone else’s site.

Stole a column? What the actual fuck? This is becoming a pretty obvious troll.

Having no idea what the column under discussion is, it is true that the page should quote a portion small enough to encourage people to go read the full article, and potentially add some of their own commentary. Presumably Charles has looked at this and found that it is the case for the page in question, so it’s someone just trying to be an ass.

And also, having watched Charles be pro-active about trying to make sure Pages do avoid quoting the entire article, he has earned the benefit of the doubt from me.

I feel like that’s important to note.

I found the conversation on Twitter and looked.

It’s not even half the column quoted in the excerpt. Four paragraphs.

Her definition of most doesn’t match up with the commonly used one, I guess. Maybe she feels that a paragraph at most is appropriate? Too bad the courts don’t agree with her opinion.

I don’t think she’s a troll, I just think she’s way off base on this one. Accusing me of stealing someone’s work when it’s clearly attributed with a link to the original piece — and it isn’t even my post — is not cool.

Only 25 minutes.

Yuji Nagatani, a seventh generation Japanese pottery producer; Luke Snyder and David Van Wyk, two knife-makers who have Bloodroot Blades in Arnoldsville, Georgia; and San Francisco’s very own Cortney Burns and Nick Balla, the chefs behind Bar Tartine.

The whole film is beautifully shot, and explores the intersection of tradition and innovation. In particular, the Bar Tartine scenes — full of food porn of the highest order — wonderfully capture the brilliance, experimentation, ambition and passion of what Burns and Balla have been doing at their Valencia Street restaurant.

I rarely jump into the middle of a Twitter spat (I reserve my energy in that regard for LGF spats, heh), but the accusation was so sudden and over the top that I had to say something, especially since the article isn’t even hers. If the author has an issue with fair use of her work, then she should speak up herself.

It was… weird. The only way Twitter remains tolerable for me is to cut the crap off as soon as things start going south. Life’s too short.

When the slot loaders eat your DVD, you need the special security Torx bit to start the dis-assembly process. Doing so, of course, voids your warranty and takes approximately half an hour.

Of course, you have no other choice on how to get it back out.

Mine was a BSR with the Pioneer-type 10-CD cartridge and no single-CD slot. You had to take the cartridge out and take the old CD out, which involved sliding out the divider, put the new CD in the cartridge and reinsert it. If you didn’t push hard enough it wouldn’t seat properly.

Tremendous PITA, but it sounded better than any CD player I’ve heard before or since….

I’d like to find a 1st or 2nd gen PS3, but they’re pretty rare beasts these days due to their support of SACD.

re: #86 klys (maker of Silmarils)

When the slot loaders eat your DVD, you need the special security Torx bit to start the dis-assembly process. Doing so, of course, voids your warranty and takes approximately half an hour.

Of course, you have no other choice on how to get it back out.

I had a school iMac do that once. That was *sure* a lot of fun to extract, since Apple makes it a point to make disassembly only possible with special tools and secret magic incantations.

That would be the model that ate my DVDs. I have no regrets about losing it and replacing it with a version that does top-loading.

Also, I am about to blow up the Amazon Instant Video app. I have been having no end of trouble with it on my PS3. I can’t play consecutive episodes of _anything_ without loading troubles; and once it starts having loading troubles, it crashes frequently, and exiting the app once it’s hung reboots the PS3 completely. I am literally steps away from punching the damn thing.

I had a launch “fat” PS3 that died after a few years. IIRC the solder on the heat sinks gave out. The story I read was the EU was demanding manufacturers use a more an environmental-friendly formula, which wasn’t as durable as older solders.

I actually fixed the stupid thing twice by baking the motherboard in the oven. It melted the solder and allowed to reflow. I eventually wound up selling the thing for parts. We replaced it with the next gen Slim model which has been pretty durable, knock on formica.

SQUAWK.

Repeat ad nauseam.

I can hear them through the closed doors/windows and we have dual pane windows. It’s every 3-4 seconds.

If starving them out would work I would totally go that route but we haven’t been feeding them in the first place.

That’s how it started in North Carolina. Charlotte passed a LGBT civil rights law that had language that said trans folk had the right to use public restrooms that coincided with their gender identity. In comes taint lick Republicans who are hateful and ignorant saying that this gives license for men to dress up a girls and prey on little girls in the girls bathroom.

It’s fucking sickening, the thought process. But, here we are. I mean, in the 80s conservatives wanted to quarantine AIDS patients and there was talk about outlawing homosexuality on the fringes (still is today).

As an individual user who runs 2 computers routinely (and was running 3 during grad school), the ability to have all my work data synchronized between the three machines was invaluable. My entire research (not subject to human-related research regulations) lived there, so I had everything at my fingertips whether I was at home or work or on my laptop.

Nothing that requires serious security goes up there, but for the boring day to day stuff, it’s incredibly useful.

Speaking of birds feeding - I was walking in the Tinicum NWR today and one thing I came across was a large carpenter ant colony in a dead tree was putting out a large number of flying queens and drones today. This, in turn, brought a lot of the local warblers out to grab some easy grub.

Warbler eating ants
Bald Eagle soaring overhead

The bald eagles have a nest in a tree overlooking the impoundment pond. One of the adults was soaring about over the pond and marsh.

And some birds just hanging around the ol’ homestead

Evening all. Fifteen days into the seemingly never-ending project from hell. Started with 25+ at training—down to about 10 now—and had scheduled 12-15 shifts per day, so already way behind. Spring came to NY for about two days—today, rain and winds that swept the flags to half mast this this afternoon.

Oh, and the client (and my boss) keep throwing more roadblocks into the works, making me want to pull my hair out by the roots. An example—they are requiring background checks that are supposed to take 2-3 days to complete. Two people who joined the project 6 days ago still aren’t cleared, so I had to train them at an outside picnic table and an offsite coffee shop, and I have to meet them out in the street when they start and finish their shifts because they can’t come into the building without clearance (the actual work they’re doing is off-site.) So obnoxious.

And my boss keeps coming up with brilliant ideas, like I should have one of my assistants drive from Yonkers to south Jersey to deliver some data, because the data entry place he’s using doesn’t want to wait for Fedex. (I said no.) Then, he thought maybe one of my other assistants could do some of the data entry in her “spare time.” (I said no.) He also thought that, because the background checks were taking so long, I should look into getting a porta-potty set up for the people who can’t have access to the buliding. (I said no, and wondered if he’d totally lost his mind.)

Other than that—I almost puked at the George Zimmerman bullshit; I am really fucking tired of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump; I have at least another week of pain and suffering before this job is done and I can go home. But “Hamilton ” was fabulous—seems like years since I saw it, though it’s only been 2-1/2 weeks.

Brussels sprouts have a bitter taste if they are not absolutely fresh, so any seasoning is bound to improve them. The equivalent here is “bitter melon,” which looks more like a knobbly cucumber than a melon. It is more bitter than brussels sprouts, and usually cooked with pork, salt and garlic to mellow the bitterness. It’s supposed to be good for you, according to TCM.

I have to be careful with them from a texture point of view, so I’m branching out carefully. Sauteeing them (shredded) in bacon grease with garlic and kalamata olives, and then coating with a little bit of butter and lemon juice and a few spices has gone really well. Can add pasta and make it a main or do it without pasta as a side.

It seems like the later in the season they’re picked, and therefore the darker green they are, the more astringent mouth feel I detect, which is probably caused by that component that people who can taste it describe as bitter, and drives them away from all the varieties of Brassica oloracea.

When I was a kid, they were always kind of yellowish and tasted like buttered cabbage—even without butter. Delicious! Now, not so much.

It’s pity Nader’s book led to the demise of the Corvair. The first generation models did have handling problems, but the second gen were apparently much better. IMO, his targeting the Corvair killed any desire Detroit may have had toward experimentation in production models.

On the other hand, Unsafe at Any Speed compelled Detroit foot draggers to make cars generally more safe to drive, or at least less lethal to their occupants.

Welcome to your future!

It’s been too long since I’ve read Cat’s Cradle by Vonnegut. But one thing that stuck with me (and found out Native American roots later in college) was how Vonnegut categorized the living and the dead. It was like DEAD-dead to KINDA-dead to living. The KINDA-dead people are folks that are still in the minds of living people. Being KINDA-dead is highly subjective, obviously. There’s all kinds of arbitrary KINDA-dead shit we see everyday, our currency, our highways (I-70 near me is called Gerald Ford Memorial Highway).

There are a fuckton of DEAD-dead people. And that’s sad. That’s life.

Tomorrow’s early bird doc

imdb.com

Garri Urban was a survivor - not a victim - of both the Holocaust and Gulag. Born in the shtetl (the Jewish rural community) in 1916, he overcame adversity through a mixture of charm, aggression, and chutzpah. His 1980 autobiographical account of his adventures took its title from when he was shot during his attempt to swim across an icy river from Soviet territory to Romania. He told the snipers who stooped to lift his apparently lifeless body; “no, tovarisch (comrade), I’m not dead” before striking their officer.

In 1992 his son, film-maker Stuart Urban, follows Garri into the former Soviet Union as soon as Communism disintegrates.

The video diaries that were made over a 14 year quest into Garri’s KGB records and the fate of his family in the Holocaust, plus extensive 16mm Kodachrome home movies from the 1950s onwards, form the core of the film, by two-time British Academy award winning director Stuart.

The diagrams in his book, though, portrayed behavior attributed to the Corvair rear suspension that was only possible for a pure swing axle connected by a transverse leaf spring (free to move side-to-side), like the Triumph Herald—which really was a menace. Completely dishonest.

I would wager that Nader, despite his “liberal” inclinations, probably rejected the rear-engine, rear- drive design as too revolutionary, and that GM should have stuck to the tried-and-true front-engine, rear-drive design. At the time, the only front-wheel-drive cars were European and perhaps Japanese, IIRC. And rear-engine designs were also limited to European marques, aside from the Corvair.

Really, the goings-on in Nevada right now are a perfect example of why Bernie was doomed from the start. There was never any organization, no preparation, it was always a campaign built purely on the idea that building up “enthusiasm” would lead to electoral victory. Problem is that the people he appeals to are the ones least likely to be registered as Democrats, let alone registered to vote. For all the money he burned up renting venues for his rallies, he could have trained and registered an army of supporters. But then again, that would’ve required his supporters getting over themselves and supporting the DNC.

When the Falcon and Corvair etc. came out, Detroit really had two models to emulate in building a small car: The VW and the Morris Minor. IMO, most chose wrongly.

20 years later, of course, they would start emulating the BMC Mini, which debuted in the same time frame—just in time for the patents on the constant-velocity U-joints that made it possible to expire.

Considering the experiments that failed in the USA, for one reason or another — Cord, Tucker, Chrysler Airflow — I could understand why conservative automakers would be wary of deviating from the norm. And that’s why the Japanese and Europeans gained market share. Most of those automakers were smaller and more nimble, like their cars.

Really, to buy the idea that Bernie is losing the nomination because of party shenanigans, I’d have to buy that Hillary would be doing just as well if the situation were reversed and she was the one running this disorganized mess of a campaign. Because despite the insistence of Bernie Bros that she’s “weak” or that her supporters are not enthusiastic enough, she has been running a very effective campaign. She avoided a lot of big public speeches and focused on small venues where she could spend time with voters. She spent money on training supporters, setting up call centers, organizing door knockers, and getting as many people registered as possible. But the big thing that has helped her has been capitalizing on the good relationships she’s built up, getting oodles of endorsements from politicians and community leaders alike.

If Bernie had done even half of that, this would be a closer race.

He stayed in too long, but more importantly his behavior and the behavior he’s tolerated from his campaign staff and surrogates has incubated the absolute worst in his supporters like a fucking yeast infection.

As the old saying goes a fish rots from the head on down and his lack of leadership is reflected in what his campaign has become. I only hope Sanders has it in him to really do the conciliatory work necessary to undo the palpable damage he’s inflicted on the Democratic Party.

As usual, the NVDEM convention was off my radar until I read LGF.

All of the drama over choosing 12 delegates! Wow. (KOLOTV)

So many attended.

Party officials say 1,693 Clinton-supporting delegates and 1,662 Sanders-supporting delegates registered Saturday at the Paris casino in Las Vegas. Four people were uncommitted.

Only four claimed to be uncommitted. At this point, how can you have not selected which candidate you want to support?

State-level delegates will vote later on Saturday for 12 delegates that will attend the Democratic National Convention. The turnout advantage for the Clinton camp suggests she’ll take the majority.

Nevada is sending 43 delegates to the national convention. Hillary Clinton picked up 13 when she won the Feb. 20 caucuses, while Bernie Sanders got 10.

Probably because it’s easier to pretend they’re for the person they want to face, combined with having spent years hating Hillary so much that faking support for her comes with real barriers. Trump and Bernie are both populist, anti-trade candidates whose campaign strategies have focused on the white working class, so it’s just natural for Trump supporters to feel a greater affinity for him than Hillary.

From the original, uncensored version of Lenin in 1918 (1939):

Lenin in 1918 (Russian: Ленин в 1918 году) Mikhail Romm, USSR 1939 9/9

Lenin (to Stalin): Yes. A clear, very clear and most obvious truth: without brutal repression of the resisting classes, without an iron - no, steel - dictatorship our revolution - well, any social revolution at all - will inevitably die.

I’m willing to bury the hatchet with them, but we gotta both meet halfway on this. I stop ripping them a new one each time they open their gobs to dribble out stupidity about how Bernie is the way and the light, and in return they stop screaming that I’m a sell-out shill who’s destroying the party by giving the nomination to a shrill lying harpy.

Personally, I think this is a pretty easy middle ground to reach.

I’m thinking Bear Spray —the cans are bigger.

Studies suggest that bear spray is effective at reducing the risk of injury or death in these situations. While bear spray can be effective, authorities stress that proper bear-awareness and avoidance techniques are the best ways to minimize injuries due to human-bear conflict.[1]

A 1990s U.S. Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team analysis determined that people who defended themselves with: guns suffered a 50% injury rate; with bear spray avoided injury most of the time.[3][4]

A 2008 “Efficacy of Bear Deterrent Spray in Alaska” study stated:

“Red pepper spray stopped bears’ undesirable behavior 92% of the time when used on brown bears, 90% for black bears, and 100% for polar bears.
Of all persons carrying sprays, 98% were uninjured by bears in close-range encounters.
All bear-inflicted injuries (n = 3) associated with defensive spraying involved brown bears and were relatively minor (i.e., no hospitalization required).
In 7% (5 of 71) of bear spray incidents, wind was reported to have interfered with spray accuracy, although it reached the bear in all cases.
In 14% (10 of 71) of bear spray incidents, users reported the spray having had negative side effects upon themselves, ranging from minor irritation (11%, 8 of 71) to near incapacitation (3%, 2 of 71).
Bear spray represents an effective alternative to lethal force and should be considered as an option for personal safety for those recreating and working in bear country.”[5]

I peeked at Rage Furby blog to see if anything new was there. No. But one of his mentally challenged fans posted something to marvel at. Chuck was trying to argue that Ben Rhodes could not possibly have seen people on the Williamsburg waterfront taking photos of the Twin Towers on 9/11 because cell phones didn’t have cameras back then.

Absorb that idea, then read this from a commenter named Libby Stack:

As someone who has been involved in the camera world for many years, I can tell you that consumer grade digital cameras were garbage back then and came with a premium price tag. Only semi serious computer and camera nerds bought them back then. A 3MP crap cam at that time would have set you back a minimum of about $250. The only DSLRs available at the time would have set you back around $5k if I remember correctly. The first really affordable DSLR was not available until about 2003, and even that came with a $1600 price tag.

Cell phones circa 2001 - not ubiquitous at all, much less phones with cameras. The only camera phones available at that time has a .35 MP resolution and cost about $400.

I can’t imagine guys, who really hadn’t taken to “man bags” yet carrying around a disposable film camera or even a modest film point & shoot just for fun. For ladies, many more important things occupied valuable handbag real estate. At that time, the only time you worried about taking a camera when you left the house was when you were on your way to your mom’s birthday party. In 2001, there were very few people like me who carried a film DSLR equipped with a modest lens with them everywhere.

Excellent observation Charles. Your other points are also well taken.

However did we take photos before DSLRs and cellphones? You can’t explain that.

Ah, OK.

That’s my point, too. The Twin Towers were a big tourist attraction, as is the Manhattan skyline. Williamsburg is on the eastern side of the East River, so the morning light would be ideal for scenic shots of the Manhattan skyline. *Of course* people would be on the waterfront with cameras taking photos with film cameras. That’s what we did back then. To imagine otherwise is sheer stupidity or self-delusion or both.

If you hear a few years down the road that no one could have taken photos of the Twin Towers being hit by jetliners because digital cameras didn’t exist back then, you’ll know where that notion took root.

Drive-by: If you’re on Twitter and preemptively block, you might want to add the guy below to your block list. As I do whenever someone follows me, I went to check his timeline. I’d never heard of the so-called “documentary” he linked to, but the “truth about Hitler” angle threw up a huge red flag. I googled the film and my suspicions were confirmed in short order. Putting his tweet in private tags. Ugh.

Truly. Taking photos of oneself was considered vain, and a little weird. You’d ask someone else to take a photo. And giving someone a snapshot of yourself was a major compliment — I like you enough that I want you to have my photo. Now, selfies are for all the world to see — sometimes unwisely.

Case in point, Geraldo Rivera in his bathroom.

Right. I’m surprised when strangers here in China, seeing I have a Nikon around my neck, hand me their expensive iPhone or DSLR and ask me to take their photo.

Of course, I’m 60 and white haired. Probably they figure I can’t get far if I decide to skedaddle with their stuff.

I love that feature. Whenever I see people trying to take a selfie I offer to take their picture for them. Then, while I’m “getting used to their phone” I snap about seven selfies before taking about a dozen quick shots of them so they don’t scroll back to my selfies before I’m safely out of distance.

I have been walking in Philadelphia near Independence Hall and been asked to do exactly that; e.g. handed an iPhone and asked to take a picture of a couple or family. More than once in fact.
(Well, asked to take the picture, and *then* handed the iPhone when I assented.)

I have also brazenly offered to do it once when a couple and their baby in a stroller where trying to take a picture in front of the Art Museum. Their alternative was ending up with two pictures since one of the adults had to handle the camera.*

If I remember correctly, points come in from call in votes, correct? Then that would possibly mean that the Ethnic Minorities in Russia would call in to support another group being hurt by Russia.

And their are enough 5th Column people within Ukraine who would vote for Russia.

re: #320 Nyet

Interestingly enough, Russian viewers gave Ukraine 10 points, Ukrainian viewers gave Russia 12 points.

Are you sure that wasn’t the countries jury votes rather than the televotes?

(To explain to others not aware of the new voting system this year on Eurovision: this year, we had each country having a jury which awarded each competitor the usual null to 12 points, as was the case in the olden days of Eurovision.

However, there was also a televote from each country, and the results null to 12 points were totalled for each country, and added in reverse order to the jury’s total of points. One of the favourites, Australia, had by far won the jury vote. The other favourite, Russia, comfortably won the televote, with Urkaine second, and Australia third.

However, Ukraine had done well enough in the jury vote- it was in the top five from the early stages and ahead of Russia- that when the televote was added, it leapfrogged ahead of Australia, and Russia’s final total was only enough to put it in third place.)

In a post on her Facebook timeline, Brittany Nicole Wallace wrote, “Today I was assaulted. A man assaulted me because I look like a ‘dike’! He told me that he would ‘beat me like the man I want to be.’ He said, ‘people like me make him hate the world.’”

“He started by hitting me over and over in the face until he got me down,” Wallace wrote. “After I was down he began to kick me in the stomach, side, and face.”

Wallace said she tried to fight back, but her attacker was bigger and stronger. Bystanders, she said, never even lifted a finger to help.

“The sad part is that no one would come help me either. Several people stood around and watched this happen to me. Again, I truly believe that if I had a more feminine appearance someone would have helped,” she wrote.

I suspect he’ll do what he’s done in the past: Throw his hands up and declare that he has no control over these people, he can’t order them to do anything, and then find some way to blame the fact that his supporters are lobbing death threats at the NV Dem leadership on their not finding ways to bend the rules to his favor.

I highly recommend watching JJ on its own. It’s a really great series. What I love about the Netflix superhero series is that the fighting isn’t the usual obviously choreographed fights where the hero mops up the opposition without getting a scratch on him. I’m seeing the friends that I have that are Berners getting cranky again, this time about the fact that Bernie is able to fill stadiums, and Hillary isn’t. O_o

I am growing more confident in regards to the fact that I am rather smart, if I do not let emotions and bias get in the way. So the first fault here is that seats in a Stadium are not votes. That’s a big one. You know what also fills stadiums? WWE and Beiber.

Which brings me to another point. Hillary has a 3 million vote lead, and that is with the fact that Sanders is only doing well in the Low-Turnout Caucuses, and to some extent Open Primaries. And the fact of the matter is that the Democrats are being generous on 2 levels. Technically, Sanders wasn’t even a Democrat, so they could have refused him the ability to run in the party. Then, you have the fact that in almost every party in every reasonably free country, they have a completely closed system in regards to nomination, only open to party members. The fact is, the Democrat don’t need to (and I would argue, should not), have open primaries.

And then when they talk about how much they want to change things, they don’t realize that this will have to be gradual. To even get the Affordable Care Act, the Democrats had to sacrifice hugely, and suffered a huge backlash. To do what they are saying would invite a Thermidorian backlash.

Any change will have to be gradual. If the Berners truely want to make a difference, aim instead to replace the head of the DNC, Debbie Wassermann Schultz. She is absolutely terrible at organization, and speaking on behalf of the party, and has undercut Obama on a number of issues, and has been overly friendly to Republicans on a number of issues. She needs to be ousted and replaced, perhaps with Barney Frank?

I highly recommend watching JJ on its own. It’s a really great series. What I love about the Netflix superhero series is that the fighting isn’t the usual obviously choreographed fights where the hero mops up the opposition without getting a scratch on him.
