Amazing New Music From Jacob Collier: “Hajanga”

Music • Views: 48,270

YouTube

Jacob Collier’s debut album is out now, and it’s absolutely stunning. In some ways, it reminds me of the first time I heard Weather Report — that combination of technical sophistication and almost child-like creative joy. It’s definitely in the running for the best album of the year — actually the best in many years.

And it’s much more than a technical tour de force, although it is most definitely that, since Jacob plays all the instruments and sings all the vocals. But there are songs on here that will touch your heart in a way that seems almost preternatural in such a young musician. And “Hajanga” is one of them. This isn’t “jazz,” although some will put it in that category. It’s just … music.

Jacob Collier takes a journey in celebration of the Hajanga, which is within us all – to bring you the fourth and final single from his debut album, ‘In My Room’.

Wonkette weighs in on an Apple patent for a device to disable its own iPhone.

Allegedly to prevent people from making shaky four-minute videos at concert venues and such (because allegedly shaky four-minute videos cut into promoters’ profits and discourage fans from seeing concerts), many are concerned what the more likely use would be.

The iPhone would detect a particular infrared signal, sent from a device on the stage, preventing it from recording.

A similar such device would prevent the phone from recording a police officer shooting a fleeing suspect in the back. It would prevent recording politicians. It would prevent a whole lot of things that concert promoters are not interested in, but government and police certainly are.

Is this cause for moral outrage?

Team succeeds for first time in genome editing of primates

A team of researchers has succeeded in immobilizing selected genes of common marmoset using genome editing technology, a breakthrough that could help research on human diseases.

[…]

In the experiments, the team destroyed genes that relate to the immune system in the fertilized ova of common marmoset using genome editing technology and transferred grown embryos to the wombs of mother monkeys.

Eight of nine babies born from the implanted embryos developed immunodeficiency, which confirmed that the targeted genes were successfully destroyed.

At least two of the babies have survived more than a year after birth.

Newt Gingrich suggested on Saturday that Donald Trump is “not trying” yet in his bid for the presidency, and said Hillary Clinton’s campaign is “just wasting a lot of money while allowing him to think through how he wants to run the fall campaign.”

Working very, very hard for a headline:

Bill Clinton has made a mess. It was either out of foolish indifference or plain foolishness, but it has created a terrible moment for his wife and the Democrats, and for President Obama and perceptions of the integrity of his administration.

I have been very wary of Hillary as a candidate in part for this very penchant to make every Clinton story, every allegation, into a headline.

This, not ideological kinship, is why outlets like WaPo like Hillary Clinton and politics.

This is why Murdoch will not really be displeased if Hillary is elected - it will be good for Fox News as they will have Clinton scandals 24/7.

Australian government in limbo with election too close to call

Australia woke up to the prospect of a hung parliament or a minority government on Sunday as vote counting in a federal election was paused with the result too close to call.

The exceptionally close vote leaves Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s government in a precarious position, potentially needing the support of independent and minor parties to form a government.

CAIR said the attacker, who is white, allegedly said, “You Muslims need to get back to your country,” before assaulting the victim, who was not identified by CAIR or authorities. CAIR said the victim was Muslim and attended the Islamic Center.

The Islamic Center’s imam had requested extra security following the mass shooting last month by Omar Mateen at the gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, about 120 miles to the north, according to CAIR and mosque spokesman Wilfredo Ruiz.

Ruiz said Mateen had infrequently attended the mosque.

Mateen, who was killed by police after a three-hour siege inside the club, declared himself to be an “Islamic soldier” and pledged allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State militant group, according to emergency call transcripts released by the FBI last month.

Ruiz criticized the Sheriff’s Office for not giving them additional security, saying: “This should not have happened.”

Sheriff Mascara said statements on the attack made by mosque officials and CAIR included “untruthful rhetoric.”

Since it has been getting rave reviews, watched the first episode of Preacher.

I don’t know… maybe I’m missing something… yes, the show has an edgy feel and blood and gore, which always sell, but it really didn’t draw me in.

I’ve also tried Killjoys - first episode, and stopped somewhere in the middle of the second episode. Pretty people doing violent things - again, very “in” as far as entertainment goes these days, but all I saw was pretty people and not much that can intrigue me.

So on Amazon Prime I’ve gone back to the not-very-successful Star Trek: Enterprise series, starting from the first epi. I think it has been unfairly too dissed. I remember watching it before, and while it seemed unpolished compared to TNG or DS9, the series did try to fill in the backstories for TOS as well as the later series. Perhaps the producers were too burdened with “canon”?

Anyway, finding small-screen entertainment wanting these days.

Yup. History can repeat.

I’ve said this before: Parliamentary and multi-party systems sometimes sound good, but…the Nazis peaked at 42% of the vote (and were down to 38% in November ‘32.) If tRump got 42% of the vote, that would be a monumental humiliation, and we have no mechanism by which anyone could collude to worm him into power anyway.

Well, unless you count the Electoral College, of course.

The first season of Fargo from two years ago I found intriguing because of the power of the actors.

The Detectorists from the UK also put acting ahead of looks. The producers intentionally found every-day-people-looking actors, not centerfolds. How novel.

I watched a couple of episodes but I couldn’t figure out why the characters were motivated to do what they did. And since it was fantasy, it didn’t seem to matter what they did. I guess you have to read the graphic novel to get it.

Entertainment has often been about cosmetics.

The glamour days of Hollywood was about getting beautiful people on screen. In between the good-lookers were the good actors who carried the films. On rare occasion a beautiful person was a good actor and those made an impact.

1970’s movies started to reach out more into higher production values, and more extremes (such as violence) were allowed on American screens.

There were significant technological advances from the 50’s to the 70’s that allowed higher quality color film to be in the hands of more producers. In the 1950’s an expensive color film could wow an audience based on color alone (look at the Disney masterpieces). By the 1970’s that was less possible, so either more extremes (violence, sex) was needed, or giant sets and productions (all those disaster movies.)

Torchwood had a boatload of problems that make it much weaker than Who.

Unfortunately, one of the bigger writers for Torchwood is taking over the Showrunning of Doctor Who when Moffat leaves after next series.

This is a problem. Chibnall is not a good writer, and Moffat has elevated the writing and stories on Doctor to their highest level since at least the 3rd and 4th Doctor.

Well, it didn’t start till fall ‘01, and the first two seasons were anything but that. I suppose you could call their third season war with the Xindi kind of a metaphor for the aftermath of 9/11, but supposedly they came up with it because they thought turning into more of an action series would improve their ratings. It didn’t.

re: #135 retired cynic

To get an idea of Chibnall’s work, I will list the episodes he has written.

“42” (Series 3)
“The Hungry Earth” / “Cold Blood” (Series 5)
Pond Life (Pre-Series 7 Shorts)
“Dinosaurs on a Spaceship” (Series 7)
“The Power of Three” (Series 7)

Of these, only 2 are good.

With Moffat, he has yet to write a bad episode. And as showrunner, he has yet to have a bad episode. He has had frustrating (Good to Amazing in one way, bad in another) or sometimes dull episodes, but not actively bad.

Chibnall at best writes decent episodes, not nothing memorable. And some border on bad.

The Power of Three was good. Right up until the resolution at the end.

Dinosaurs in Space would be my preference of the group. Showcased a prototype of the episode types we have now, where we will have the Doctor, a Companion, and a crew around him, showing an amazing character in Brian Williams, as well as showing bigger hints at the Doctor’s Dark Side, which we would only see fully in Hell Bent.

Star Tribune: Minnesota in the sights of Clinton campaign, but little attention so far from Trump

Trump’s campaign has paid little attention to Minnesota to date, and at the moment there’s not a single paid operative for Trump in the state. That could change after the Republican National Convention later in July, as his supporters here pitch the celebrity businessman’s political advisers on making a play for Minnesota.

“As I told some Trump people yesterday, this is the state that elected Jesse Ventura, that elected colorful and unconventional personalities like Paul Wellstone and Al Franken,” said Ron Carey, a former state Republican chairman who said he’s been in frequent contact with one of Trump’s top aides, Ed Brookover. “Donald Trump is a totally different kind of candidate that can appeal to different segments of the electorate than your typical Republican, and that makes Minnesota viable and in play in my mind.”

Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

That article assumes that an individual’s ideology must be coherent and reflective of an ethos, when that doesn’t need to be the case. Lots of folks will bend everything else they “believe” to suit one strong impression—generally one thing they’re invested in emotionally—and not even notice.

According to a post I read in Phoenix New Times recently, the guy who is running against Arpaio for sheriff is closer in polling than Arpaio is used to, so I guess he thinks it’s time for him to draw more attention to himself the way he did by making prisoners wear pink underwear and live in a tent city.

That article assumes that an individual’s ideology must be coherent and reflective of an ethos, when that doesn’t need to be the case. Lots of folks will bend everything else they “believe” to suit one strong impression—generally one thing they’re invested in emotionally—and not even notice.

Where did you get I asserted I could read people’s minds from my comment?

The observation was that Senators Warren and Sanders have about polar opposite ideas on economics to those of Libertarians (I will defer to my wife the former Libertarian Party campaign finance manager on that one).

If it was merely Clinton hatred spun up by thirty years of GOP mudslinging or something else, he might say “well, I am not going to vote for her or Mr. Trump.” (That is what my own Republican senator Ben Sasse said back in February.)

Then he felt the Bern big time, took a 180 degree turn, and now he is spouting off every right wing talking point, every conspiracy theory in existence about Hillary. He is so delusional and such a pain in the ass, totally convinced that he is as right now attacking her as he now feels he was wrong defending her. And the most annoying thing is that in the process of learning that you have to hate Hillary in order to truly love Bernie, he has become such a sexist. He is now posting photoshopped images of Hillary with grotesquely enhanced double-chins, eyes bulging out of her face just for the heck of it and making sick and really old jokes about Hillary’s canckles.

I want to kick his ass so bad just to bring him out of his delusions, but I think that for him there is no turning back. It is Bernie or bust, even if it means Trump will become the president.

Well, if I argue that I am an atheist, but I also state I believe in some god, I am “no true atheist.”

Wrong analogy. If you argue that you’re an atheist but you vote for a theist, you’re still an atheist.
If you’re voting for a theist that takes away some of your rights, you’re still an atheist.

Not all progressives have the same “main issues” that you do. And many are deluded enough to swallow the “Hillary is a war hawk” meme, so they convince themselves that Trump is a lesser evil since they delude themselves into thinking that he’s more of an isolationist (same logic applies to Paul btw). I’ve seen one literally argue (and I think I reposted it here) that the morality induces them to care more about the people in ME than about the people in the US at this point, and, that thinking goes, Hillary is worse for ME than Trump.

None of these folks are for racism (at least explicitly) or privatizing schools or whatever. You’re missing the point of their (admittedly deluded) thinking.

You may not like this line of thought but that doesn’t make it non-existent and it does not make them not-progressives or the mythical rodent copulators.

I cannot see how anyone can claim to be a progressive or a liberal would vote for Rand Paul, as his explicit wish is to privatise Social Security, abolish the ACA, continue to defund social services whilst expanding military power, opposing marriage equality, the Civil Rights Act, &c &c &c. Senator Paul holds no liberal or progressive positions whatsoever.

A Hillary Clinton hater? Yes, I can see someone voting for Senator Paul for that. But to vote for or endorse the exact opposite of a claim of “progressive values?” Nope.

And Ha Ha Goodone’s item 1 in that Paul article is exactly Hillary’s alleged hawkishness (which is a far-left meme):

1. Rand Paul will be more cautious with waging war than Hillary Clinton or Jeb Bush. Sen. Paul has called Obama’s ISIS war illegal and isn’t against defending American interests through military intervention, but stresses the importance of Congress making these decisions. Hillary Clinton, in contrast, thinks we should have armed the Syrian rebel groups several years ago. Try naming even one of the Syrian rebel groups and explaining their differences with ISIS. Furthermore, The Week states that “Clinton’s instincts appear to be far more hawkish than Barack Obama’s.” Imagine a more hawkish Obama and you’ll get the next President Clinton. Also, famed neocon Robert Kagan is one of Clinton’s advisers and states in The New York Times, “I feel comfortable with her on foreign policy.” That should tell you how liberal Clinton will be on matters of perpetual war in the Middle East.

In less gentle terms: they think Hillary is a “neocon”, whatever that means in their world.

And for them Paul and Trump allegedly not being neocons trumps other considerations.

You’re hanging your True Scotsman fallacy on a strawman argument to boot (“throw all my values under the bus”).

As I have written above, not everyone has the same policy priorities as you do. For some progressives Clinton’s alleged foreign policy hawkishness trumps other, more local considerations. It’s not throwing out all one’s values. It’s sacrificing some of them for the others, which one deems more important. That Clinton is not at all hawkish and that Trump does not seem to be an isolationist makes these progressives deluded, not “not progressive”. They are attacking Clinton from the left, not from the right. And they think Clinton’s FP is more right-wing than Trump’s and Paul’s. They say as much, too.

We are not talking about Rand Paul’s positions.

We are talking about the perceptions of the many on the far-left both of the FP of Clinton and Trump (and Paul, when he was still somewhat relevant).

The common staple of the far-left discourse is the feigned aversion to “regime change” abroad. It’s a charge usually thrown against Hillary.

Guess who agrees with the brogressives about “regime change”?

Assange is being tactical
He sees an angle in the libertarian opposition to these issues, and he’s stoking it. I don’t blame him.

Personally, I can’t stand libertarianism. If they had Ron Paul’s way, we would end up the United States of Walmart Sachs.

But like Assange, I strongly support Ron Paul’s opposition to imperialism, violations of the Constitution, drone warfare, renditions, the Surveillance State, indefinite detentions etc.

Adults can do that. Separate the good parts from the bad, and support the good. And I’ll tell you what. Democrats should see Assange’s little play here as a warning. There has been, since the Bush nightmare, potential for a new coalition among progressives opposed to all these things (attack on civil liberties and empire), and the populist right who is also opposed to these things.

The Democrats blatant hypocrisy on these issues, which were clearly wrong under Bush, but are supposed to be OK under Obama, is a potential catalyst for realignment.

And then there’s this

A July Washington Post-ABC News poll — before the latest disclosures reported by The Post — found fully 70 percent of Democrats and 77 percent of Republicans said the NSA’s phone and Internet surveillance program intrudes on some Americans’ privacy rights.

While the numbers are encouraging, more Republicans than Democrats now oppose this crap.
Thus Assange’s play.

And for them Paul and Trump allegedly not being neocons trumps other considerations.

At what point does your willingness to jettison the vast majority of progressive policies negate your self identification as a “progressive”?

re: #223 Nyet

We are not talking about Rand Paul’s positions.

We are talking about the perceptions of the many on the far-left both of the FP of Clinton and Trump (and Paul, when he was still somewhat relevant).

The common staple of the far-left discourse is the feigned aversion to “regime change” abroad. It’s a charge usually thrown against Hillary.

Guess who agrees with the brogressives about “regime change”?

cnsnews.com

So yes, non-interventionism trumps many other more local issues for these folks.

Which goes back to my original comparison of certain Evangelical groups supporting Donald Trump. When they support him, is their Christianity more important to them, or Mr. Trump? If the latter, then the argument they aren’t really Christians is a fair one.

(See also conservative claims all Muslims are guilty for the actions of a few. Imams have repeatedly argued groups like Daesh have hijacked their religious beliefs for political ends. Many Christian groups make the same claims about groups like the Family Research Council or the American Family Association.)

If I claim to be a Christian (as an atheist), and you know I am an atheist, then calling me “not Christian” is not a No True Christian fallacy.

If I am willing to throw under the bus not some progressive positions (as you implied with the remark that interventionalism trumps other things for some people) but all progressive positions, then I believe it is safe to say that person does not hold progressive positions. (And progressive positions do not include Rand Paul’s idea of non-interventionalism anyway. That is an isolationist and conservative position.)

Hence, some fellow saying he would support Rand Paul (a person who holds exactly zero progressive positions) over Hillary Clinton is either a) stupid b) lying (rodent copulating) or c) not a progressive to begin with.

“I don’t care about the Civil Rights Act”
“I don’t care about women’s rights”
“I don’t care about voter suppression”
“I don’t care about expanding the military yet more”
“I don’t care about privatising Social Security”
“I don’t care about the moochers on food stamps”
“I don’t care about funding government outside the military”
“I don’t care about environmental regulations”
“I don’t believe in anthropogenic climate change despite overwhelming scientific evidence (or any other scientific position, for that matter)”

are not progressive positions.

I don’t know whether a, b, or c is correct with this fellow. However, supporting a small l libertarian (and all that entails) means “not progressive.” Doesn’t matter the reason (non-intervention, Hillary Clinton, think Planned Parenthood is selling baby parts, &c).

Again, I defer to my wife the Libertarian (large L). She looked over his article and said, “nope, not a progressive.”

I need to get to bed. It is very late here, and tomorrow I need to start packing and preparing for my trip to Canada. Thank you for the discussion … it does give me more to think about.

They’re not abandoning their progressive views, so your question is ambiguous. If you mean, how long they can tactically vote for what they think is a lesser evil while remaining progressives and hoping to have those progressive policies in the future (thus not jettisoning them on an ideological level), I’d say - indefinitely, but that would make them dumb, deluded and/or sociopathic progressives.

A Christian is a Christian, whether they vote for Trump, Hitler or Dalai Lama.

(See also conservative claims all Muslims are guilty for the actions of a few. Imams have repeatedly argued groups like Daesh have hijacked their religious beliefs for political ends. Well sure, but it’s just another instance of the No True Scotsman fallacy. After all, ISIS members are Muslims, FRC and AFA members are Christian, and so on.

If I claim to be a Christian (as an atheist), and you know I am an atheist, then calling me “not Christian” is not a No True Christian fallacy.

True. Since in this case you don’t know that these folks are not progressive (and I know that they are, since they have a record), it is such a fallacy.

Non-interventionism is a position popular among the far-left. Bernie’s been milking it for everything it’s worth, going on about Lybia, Syria, “regime change” and so on, although he himself is not a full anti-interventionist (Afghanistan, Kosovo, drones). Jill Stein is, though. And whether you like it or not, she represents the segment of the far-left we are talking about (and even she’s too right-wing for some).

Hence, some fellow saying he would support Rand Paul (a person who holds exactly zero progressive positions) over Hillary Clinton is either a) stupid b) lying (rodent copulating) or c) not a progressive to begin with.

See, you’ve already expanded the list of options to “stupid” (something I can agree with).

“I don’t care about the Civil Rights Act”
“I don’t care about women’s rights”
“I don’t care about voter suppression”
“I don’t care about expanding the military yet more”
“I don’t care about privatising Social Security”
“I don’t care about the moochers on food stamps”
“I don’t care about funding government outside the military”
“I don’t care about environmental regulations”
“I don’t believe in anthropogenic climate change despite overwhelming scientific evidence (or any other scientific position, for that matter)”

are not progressive positions.

True, and none of those folks espouse these positions. That’s why it’s called tactical voting for (what they see as) a lesser evil.
They actually do support the opposite of what you have listed. That they’re willing to vote for a candidate who doesn’t, in the hope that this will lead to a shake up that will, after a few years, lead to these policies, doesn’t make them “not progressive”. It makes them dumb as a brick.

In any event those who think Trump would be less interventionist than Clinton are snorting bath salts. The guy is running on an explicit platform of torture and plunder. Anybody who looks at that and thinks he’d be better for the citizens of the middle east is either obtusely deluding themselves or, more likely, cynically selling what they know is a lie on the theory that Trump will usher in a glorious communist revolution. A revolution in which minorities will likely be made to suffer the most.

Which isn’t to say they aren’t progressive, just that they’re progressive assholes. Animal Farm brand liberals have a gigantic blind spot when it comes to the role racism plays in our society, one that they willfully maintain.

Part of the problem is trying to define the term progressive to mean things that properly belong within other dimensions of the modern political idea-space. There’s more than just Liberal/Progressive vs. Conservative, there’s Authoritarian vs. Permissive, Pragmatic vs. Idealistic, Reactionary vs. Enlightened, Elitist/Intellectual/Expertise Based vs. Populist/Anti-Intellectual/”Common Sense Wisdom” based, Collectivistic vs. Individualistic, Environmentally Conservationist vs. Exploitative, Secular vs. Theocratic. It goes on and on.

There are so many variables here that we’d need something impossible for us to actually visualize, like a Calabi-Yau manifold, to even begin mapping it all out.

I know someone who calls himself a progressive but believes Japanese internment was acceptable and LBJ a great President. For some reason though he hates Hillary a lot, but finally accepted he would vote for her over Trump in this election the first election he will bother to vote in for over 20 years. Democrats have always had a big tent of different ideologies and only in this election have purity tests come where if you don’t support Bernie and think Hillary is worse than Trump then you aren’t a real liberal/progressive/Democrat with a vocal group of people online. I’m still convinced those Bernie or bust people are just misogynists or trolls.

103-year-old Iowa woman vows to live long enough to cast her vote for Hillary Clinton.

An Iowa woman, born seven years before women were given the vote, says she plans to stick around long enough to vote for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, adding a Donald Trump presidency would be a disaster.

In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, 103-year-old Ruline Steininger spoke about campaigning for Clinton during the Iowa caucuses saying she never thought she’d live to see a woman president in her lifetime.

Steininger, who will be voting in her twentieth presidential election, said the candidacy for Clinton is very special to her.

“She’s our only hope. We certainly don’t want Trump for a president,” she said before adding, “Hillary is the best qualified candidate we have had in a long long time.”

She feels it is her patriotic duty to live long enough to cast a ballot for Mrs. Clinton and against Mr. Trump.

Asked whether she was surprised that Donald Trump could be a “legitimate candidate,” Steininger was quite blunt.

“I’m shocked. I don’t know what has gotten into people,” she replied. “If he’s elected president, it’s going to be a national disaster which we will likely take years to recover from.”

She added, “The only way to stop Trump is to vote for Hillary.”

Take note, Sanders supporters holding out for the perfect candidate. (I was a Sanders supporter; I am now all in for Mrs. Clinton). There is no such thing as a perfect candidate, and perfect is the enemy of good.

There is more at the Raw Story article, including a video clip of the interview from CNN.

I wonder how many other senior citizens Mr. Trump is inspiring with a reason to live long enough to vote against him? I suspect it is not a big voting bloc, but it is certainly an interesting one.

Nebraska representatives talk about gun laws in the wake of the Orlando mass-murder, as reported by the Scottsbluff Star-Herald here.

The Star-Herald correctly characterised the mass-murder as an attack on a gay bar. It also portrayed the Democrats proposals on certain rifles as a ban against military weapons.

Representative Adrian Smith (R-NE3) characterised the Democratic sit-in not as an objection to obstruction in the House but a political statement which broke House rules (conveniently leaving out the Republican sit-in some years ago on behalf of poor beleaguered oil companies, and sticking with the GOP caricaturisation of the sit in).

Senator Deb Fischer (R) said that both sides should work together on the problem, as no one wants terrorists to get guns (glossing over the LGBT aspect of the shootings). She plumped for Senator John Cornyn’s (R-TX) bill.

A local official, state senator John Stinner (R-district 48, Scott’s Bluff County) notes there is no pending legislation but he would study it if it came up in the Unicameral.

Governor Pete Ricketts (R) and Senator Ben Sasse (R) did not return comments.

I suspect I will be reading plenty about this in the paper in the coming days.

Mother Jones reports on the Republican plan to reign in military spending.

That plan is built on the backs of the poorest in the military, by slashing Basic Allowance for Quarters (the payments made to military personnel who live off base).

Conservatives supporting the troops again; my time in the military was what convinced me conservatives don’t give a diddly damn about active duty or veterans. I could see the difference; we were (and are) only a backdrop for flag-waving patriotic sound bites for conservatives.

The most significant pay rise I received was under President Jimmy Carter’s administration.

Under President Reagan, he imposed zero pay rise for several years, arguing that military personnel need to set a standard for civilians in fighting inflation (?). We also had several years where military pay was in doubt at the beginning of the new fiscal year due to threats from the GOP to prevent a spending plan going through.

One thing the Republican proposal does do: It adds a whole lot of paperwork and bureaucracy to receive BAQ. Submitting paperwork every month by every service member for justification of BAQ payments is the epitome of “smaller government” (it is to laugh).

Yes, Leo Express is a private company that uses the national railway system. They started up a couple of years back. Aside from the state railway company, there’s one other private railway company, Student Agency; the most positive thing is that now having some competition, the state railway agency has lowered their prices and now offers promotions in order to compete.

That being said, the two private companies here really only run the Prague-Brno-Ostrava route, and anything else in between is handled by České Dráhy. And of course, there’s several private bus carriers to choose from, including Student Agency and Leo Express.

That’s very cool. AFAIK, there’s nothing like it in China. I think it would be impossible in the USA, too. Regulatory issues aside, any company would have to negotiate ROW not only with Amtrak, but with all the freight rail carriers, who barely allow Amtrak ROW as it is.

When I was in Denver last sumer, I visited the transportation museum, and saw a few private cars for corporate use. These would be hauled by regular passenger trains (for a fee) back when people actually traveled by rail in the USA. I’m not sure such a practice still exists.

Alright…shit to do…got to go build some Ikea furniture for my MIL’s condo…the fancy furniture she ordered won’t be built for another 8 weeks, so my wife and I went and bought her a temporary bed, coffee tables, a dining table, etc. yesterday so she can start living there until the permanent stuff arrives.

And yeah, I’ll get to sell all this crap on Craigslist in a month and a half - or donate it…which is easier.

Have a good day everyone.

Holy shit. When did ISIS get heat seeking missiles? And boats! (That pic is over the water too). I suppose it’s no big deal. If I was involved in the fight against ISIS I’d want a cool banner too. I still think it looks like death from above.

ISIS has been known to have gained possession heat seeking MANPADS for a number of years. They’ve shot down a few Iraqi aircraft. SU-25s and helicopters.

re: #285 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

That’s very cool. AFAIK, there’s nothing like it in China. I think it would be impossible in the USA, too. Regulatory issues aside, any company would have to negotiate ROW not only with Amtrak, but with all the freight rail carriers, who barely allow Amtrak ROW as it is.

When I was in Denver last sumer, I visited the transportation museum, and saw a few private cars for corporate use. These would be hauled by regular passenger trains (for a fee) back when people actually traveled by rail in the USA. I’m not sure such a practice still exists.

I’ve only once taken Leo Express…..it was from somewhere in Southern Moravia back home to Ostrava. I was with a friend of mine and some of her friends. Long story short, she was too tired and grumpy to wait for the České Dráhy train back here, so we hopped on a Leo Express train and came back. Not expensive at all, either.

Here’s an article about Leo Express and it’s founder.

He’s planning to enter the American market. I hope he succeeds. Competition will be hard on Amtrak, whose budget is hamstringed by a cheapskate Congress, but more interest in rail travel will spill over to Amtrak and maybe boost its ridership.

“Political interference”? Last I checked, Bill is retired from office and has been so for nearly two decades. He has no authority over Lynch whatsoever. And there remains absolutely no evidence that the investigation was broached during their conversation, let alone that he did anything to “interfere” in it.

Like most Clinton conspiracies, “looks bad” is now being viewed as a crime in itself.

Maybe; I love rail travel, personally. I have one student - who’s also become a friend - and she relies exclusively on rail or bus travel for long distance journeys. She refuses to own a car and she loathes flying, though she will hop on a plane if she absolutely has to, of course, unlike another friend of mine who simply and flatly refuses to fly anywhere. She’ll take trains or buses here around Europe. I asked her once, “How would you get to China if you needed to?” Of course……by train. Which is entirely possible.

Prague to Moscow, Moscow to Beijing. That’s one hell of a long train trip.

sagehen  Jul 3, 2016 • 8:14:32am

totally OT: a fun story I just learned from a documentary about the post-Civil War years (The American West, on AMC, exec produced by Robert Redford. Highly recommed.)

So Jesse James and his brother Frank and their gang have decided, because they’re angry Confederates, that it’s not enough to rob railroads and local banks. They decide they’re going to rob the Mississippi Reconstruction governor’s hometown bank, where his money is. In Minnesota.

So the James Gang goes to Northfield MN, scout the area, plan their daring daylight bank robbery, and…

They don’t realize it’s opening day of hunting season. Downtown is full of hunters in various Main Street shops picking up extra ammo, lunch, and whatever other supplies they need for the day, they all have their hunting rifles, they’ve all been doing weeks of target practice to prepare…

The James Gang goes into the bank and shoots the ceiling “everyone down, open the safe”, but the bank manager isn’t there, the usual cashier isn’t there, there’s no cash at the teller windows because depositors have been coming by for the last couple of hours getting what they need to buy their hunting supplies. Jesse shoots and kills a bank employee. By this time, they’ve been in the bank longer than the entire heist was supposed to take. And they’ve attracted a lot of attention because the shots were so loud.

Townspeople with hunting rifles are on balconys and behind wagons, to do battle with the James Gang who are armed with Confederate pistols. Some of the gang escapes, the townspeople chase after them (it is hunting season after all. Unrepentant Confederate Outlaws is much better game than whitetail deer). Almost the entire James Gang dies. Jesse and Frank live through it and have to go into hiding, but they’ve lost all their friends from childhood who they served with in the Civil War…

For an extra level of irony… the safe wasn’t even locked. If they’d just tried the handle instead of wasting time roughing up bank staff and yelling threats, they’d have had a big score and been on their way intact.

Fascinating article.

I hope he makes it, too, though he will probably have a harder row to hoe in the US than he did in the Czech Republic. For one thing, Czechs, like most Europeans, have a long-ingrained habit of using rail transport for medium distances, and have built the infrastructure to go with it. Americans, not so much. For another (notwithstanding the golly-gosh, gee-whiz! tone of the HuffPo piece), Novotny’s issues, if any, with the state rail company seem to have gotten glossed over. There seem to been have no serious objections or regulatory barriers put in the way of him starting up, no exorbitant ROW fees, etc. Nice for him: shows what what can do with a civilized government.
In this country, though, there are two, not three stumbling-blocks in the way of a rail startup like a US Leo Express: one: Amtrak itself, which has a monopoly on interstate passenger rail; second, the fact that like Amtrak, a US Leo would have to use somebody else’s trackage: the private rail corporations that still own most of the rails and still prioritize their freight haulage over passenger service wherever possible.

I really hope to be proved wrong, though: rail service in the US is a hugely neglected and under-invested segment of our transportation infrastructure, and despite its utility in so many areas, investment in it seems to attract little-to-no interest form the government or the public.

re: #303 Jay C

Oh, there were issues, IIRC. České Dráhy (the state railway company) screamed bloody murder at the prospect of competition…..as far as they’re concerned, they’re the only game in town and it’s supposed to stay that way.

It helped, to be honest, that Novotný is well-connected and was able to use his influence to get Leo Express off the ground, despite ČD’s livid objections. The owner of Student Agency is also a very well-connected person as well. In these two cases, they used their influence for something that benefits the general public……and enriched them further, to boot.

That being said, I’m not a big fan of monopolies and especially as in the case of České Dráhy, it was grotesquely inefficient. When I first came here in 2001, ČD was indeed the only game in town, and they still maintain some really old rolling stock. It works, but it lacks the creature comforts of the most modern trains, such as WiFi and air conditioning. The fanciest train ČD has in its rolling stock is a couple of Pendolino trains.

I’ll give you rock and roll. But if we REALLY want to be All American, it should be Pumpkin pie, basketball, blues, and barbecue.

Potatoes too.

Liberals don’t celebrate the American revolution? There’s a big difference between admitting that true equality was not achieved in 1776 and not seeing its historical importance.

NO! The country was PERFECT after the 2nd Amendment was ratified! It’s only gone downhill from there!!!

And given what holiday is tomorrow it’s an obvious approach to hit on this weekend since a lot of people are doing their chest-beating “I bleed red, white, and blue!” schtick right now.

Yeah. I can’t even be offended by it. It’s just so silly.

Potatoes too.

Salsa - the condiment, not the dance. But the dance, too.

Corn in all its forms, from sweet corn to tortillas, but most especially cornbread!

Best friend is still hanging on to Sanders.

I am going to attack that. The two things I will use are Sanders poor records on Gun Control and Immigration, along with the fact that there is no room for idealism in politics.

I was thinking about that the other day regarding corn. It’s pretty crazy to think that most of us with European ancestors did not eat it for the first time until the 17th century or so.

Plenty of room for it actually since it is the far goal to work for. Otherwise, it’s all opportunism making short random jumps all over the place without any apparent principles guiding it. And the latter is as bad, or worse, as a purist since you have to live with the fear that the opportunist will simply be bought at some point.

For me, it more what will be the best for the most amount of people. For this reason I am Socialist. Not some pie in the sky candidate. It can’t get anything done, but in increments.

So we’re both looking for something in the moderate middle then? Has guiding principles and goals, but understands that they have to be worked towards in incremental steps and via consensus since they cannot be broadly imposed* from above?

* - Note however that part of leadership is picking places where something does have to be imposed. Ex: Truman desegregating the military.

I saw some comments earlier about people firing off fireworks all weekend long. Well, Columbus makes it a thing.

We always have a huge 4th Weekend fireworks blowout called Red, White and Boom. It’s been going on for 40 years plus or so. Many times they try to get it on a day that is not the 4th, but right around it preferably on a Friday. This year that made Friday the 1st the day for the big blowout.

Then the smaller suburbs around the area can have their celebrations on other nights, many having traditional 4th displays.

So blame us! Central Ohio is 4 days of fireworks and the residents are into it all over the city the whole time.

And if you don’t have any fireworks and need to see some to put you in a 4th mood, here is the entire Red, White and Boom 20 plus minute program as put on by NBC Channel 4 and WNCI radio doing the soundtrack.

Go to the 20 minute mark in the video and watch the finale if you just want a few minutes of Boom.

And since I am listening to Ian Dury stuff on YouTube, here’s another one. (I was just starting high school when this stuff charted - and the FM station in Ottawa did play it.)
