I hope Alex realizes there are probably any number of hidden monitoring devices built into that Barrett, and probably a secret command activated polonium cartridge as well.

If you’ve hooked up your LGF account to Twitter, we have a new feature — when you use one of our tweet buttons, after your post a tweet, the popup dialog box now shows you the tweet form again, underneath the tweet you just posted.

If you then use the form to post something else, it’s tweeted as a reply to the previous tweet.

This lets you easily create “tweet storms” that are threaded and simple to follow. Just keep tweeting replies and they’ll all show up on Twitter underneath the original tweet.

And remember - you can pop up a blank tweet form at any time by typing control-Y. (As long as you’re not currently entering a comment.)

I seriously doubt if Trump will change anything. I read a TPM post a couple hours ago in which he said that he “misses” the primary season, and that he liked it better. I think he thought that the bile he sold in the GOP primary season would be a winner in the General Election, and now that it’s not working, he has a sad. I also think he has a strong need to be approved by everyone he exposes himself to and is having a hard time understanding why he is being rejected not only by members of his own party but by millions of potential voters. He’s learning the hard way that not everyone is dazzled by his money and/or by the fact that he’s a TV reality show personality. Facing reality is hard for DT.

addictinginfo.org

After the Republican National Convention I wrote an open letter to a rabid Trump supporter. I realize now the letter was for you, Donald and media men. It’s you I’ve been wanting to talk to. You who have been stressing me and most of the nation out to the point of a diagnosable sickness. WE ARE BEING POISONED. We, the public, are being sickened by an ever expanding assault on our right to live a healthy and free life. Donald & you ratings driven colluders, are holding us the public hostage and exposing us to disease. A massive DISease.

Our symptoms are knots in our shoulders, sick feelings in the pit of our vaginas, stomach tightness, shortness of breath, wildly elevated stress levels- we are now chronically experiencing a true mass illness.

I read a while back that NPR is providing its reporters who cover Trump with some sort of training so they’ll be able to deal with the abuse and threats they receive from participants at his rallies.

“NPR has sent its political reporters to 90-minute hostile-environment awareness training, which in its typical form lasts a few days and prepares journalists for covering war zones or regions where terrorists are active. News organizations, government agencies and nongovernmental organizations generally employ such training to help employees respond to such hazards as riots, mortar attacks, kidnappings or firefights. In this case, NPR’s scaled-down sessions might be called Trump Training.”

Jim Hoft is pushing this crappy site, of course.

A couple of rather notable differences between the “unskewed polls” guy from 2012 and this one. Dean Chambers, the guy responsible for the Unskewed Polls site, regularly spoke with the press and when his methodology was completely debunked after the election, somewhat owned up to the fact.

On the other hand, nobody knows who actually runs Longroom:

“Michael Ellis,” the man listed as LongRoom’s managing editor, is described in only the vaguest of terms as “an Internet Executive with over 23 years of experience, including general management of mid to large sized publications. He has been involved with internet community management his entire career.” The three other staff members have similarly indistinct bios, and rather than photographed headshots, the staff is depicted in sketches. None of the staff appears to have Twitter accounts, let alone follow the @LongRoomNews account. Searches for the staff on other social networking sites did not lead anywhere and there is no listed point of contact for any of the LongRoom staff members anywhere on the site. FiveThirtyEight reached out to the site’s only point of contact for comment — a support email address — and did not hear back. A public records search for LongRoom yielded no results for the business. (In addition to its “unbiased” polling operation, the site aggregates news stories.)

Nearest islands to Epicenter are Aneityum in Vanuatu, and Mare Island in New Caledonia (An Autonomous Region of France).

A final referendum on the status of New Caledonia will be held in 2018, which will decide if it will become independent, or become a full part of France.

Come to think of it, we should be doing the same with our own populated Islands around the globe. 3 of them can become states instantly, and 2 of them only need minor immigration to get there.

The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 is still in force, which means the minimum size for a state is 60k.

I think that the phrase “professional-appearing” fits pretty well, since I’m getting a Error 513 “Service Temporarily Unavailable” message when trying to browse to the site. That screams of pure amateurism. Also, they claim that the analytical model was written in APL, instead of a more robust (and much less proprietary) language like MATLAB.

A spokesperson for the company said Snapchat’s “anime-inspired lens” was among several new filters that went up yesterday, and has since expired. When I inquired about its obvious “yellowface” appearance, I was told something similar to the quote provided to Mashable, that “lenses are meant to be playful and never to offend.”

Here’s the thing, though. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to find anime characters resembling Snapchat’s skeptical interpretation. None of the genre’s typical features, such as colorful hair, disproportionately large eyes, or angular faces, seem to be referenced by the filter.

Seriously that’s the most racist shit I’ve seen in a minute. It’s an indictment of modern tech culture that something so flagrantly and obviously offensive was ever even allowed into the product pipeline let alone saw the light of day.

Yeah it’s nice to be able to have that with a parent. We both agreed that it just stumps us how many people we know that fit our demo just can’t empathize. Was a really good conversation to have. I’ve been having some good talks with my brother about this stuff too. We’re all really lucky to have been brought up with the values we got. The petty nature Drumpfskind’s billionaire buddies:

The Marvel Chairman, a Hate-Mail Feud and Claims of Stolen DNA

[…]

That Perlmutter is embroiled in a bizarre dispute hardly is surprising given his history of legal dustups and a notoriously curmudgeonly personality. The gun-toting exec once was at the center of internal harassment claims at Marvel, and he micromanages with an obsessive eye on frugality, vetoing an upgrade of the company’s worn furniture and denying journalists more than one soda at a press junket. When Perlmutter is not involved in Marvel matters, he frequently dines with Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, and his wife has given nearly $500,000 to the Republican’s presidential campaign. As one of the largest Disney shareholders, he’s one of the few industry figures with a direct line of communication to CEO Bob Iger.

[…]

Perlmutter’s camp also claims to THR that Peerenboom has a private DNA data bank of many neighbors (he testified about going through their trash) and also has dined with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, with access to the drinking glass and silverware used by the Republican presidential candidate. Kasowitz responds that his client doesn’t know Trump and considers the implication he harvested Trump’s DNA to be ridiculous and untrue.

Although there’s no evidence Trump’s genetic material was stolen, the subject of how a politician’s pilfered DNA might be used has come up in the past. […]

This imbroglio appears to have started over a tennis court, namely who was contracted to manage it, and their swanky apartment building.

Should we all have such pressing concerns.

re: #167 MsJ

What winnings? So they tax the medals?

I was about to ask about that.

Snopes deals with it:
snopes.com

Origin:One aspect of the Olympic Games many U.S. viewers remain unaware of is the fact that U.S. medalists (like those from many other countries) receive cash prizes along with their medals: $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze. These rewards are not paid by the International Olympic Committee (which furnishes the medals), but by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Similarly, participants from some other countries receive monetary prizes put up by their home countries’ Olympic committees.

That money is indeed taxable.

The medals themselves are not actually worth very much (the gold medal is mostly silver and only 1% gold). In theory it could be taxed, but it is unlikely the IRS would come after an athlete for failure to claim the medal.

Endorsements on the other hand are worth a bunch of money.

I’m so glad my Dad isn’t like these guys. We actually had a great talk tonight about how much resentment fuels the right wing movement and support for Trump and antipathy for Clinton and liberals/Democrats in general.

My parents are pretty conservative, and both of them hate Trump. I don’t much think they’ll vote for Clinton, but they think of her better than they think of the Yam.

Whatever Dr. Ben accomplished during his medical career, he has now sullied with his willingness to claim OTOH that he’s a model Christian while OTOH he engages in pushing lies and other sh*t. I’ve read that some young black males who once looked upon him as a role model are wondering what happened to him. I think there’s an easy answer to their question. Greed. He made good money as a neurologist, but he makes great money by lying and promoting propaganda and conspiracy theories. He and the other guy who are attempting to “analyze” HRC and comment on her mental fitness to be the next POTUS are no better than quacks. I’ve never known a medical doctor who examined, analyzed, and diagnosed any patient from afar and tried conclude that their results are valid and credible. That Fox is doing this tells me that Trump’s campaign is becoming desperate and he has asked someone at the network for help.

Thanks. I have no problem taxing that.
It would, however, be nice if it was taxes at a lower percentage than the percentage that trump pays.

A President Donald Trump might push for Americans accused of terrorism to be tried in military tribunal at the U.S. Navy base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, the Republican nominee told the Miami Herald on Thursday.

“I would say they could be tried there, that would be fine,” Trump said in a brief interview ahead of his speech to home builders in Miami Beach.

Under current federal law, it’s illegal to try U.S. citizens at military commissions. Changing the law would require an act of Congress.

My mother served in the US Navy in the Vietnam Era (not in Vietnam though). She has always been of the opinion that military personnel and veterans (who are subject to civilian governance) should not meddle in civilian government, including elections. She was actually quite upset with me when I ran for my village board.

However, with the rise of Trump and her despite of Senator Mark Kirk, she decided that her principles on military participation in elections were not as important as ensuring a fascist gain power.

Past week I’ve been commenting on the sectarian violence in parts of India, where Hindu fundamentalists have been attacking Dalits in particular.

Well, this happened a short time ago:

UP: BJP leader Teotia critical after assailants fire 100 rounds at his convoy

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Brijpal Teotia and six others were shot at by unidentified assailants, who allegedly fired more than 100 rounds at his convoy at Muradnagar in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh late Thursday evening.

Teotia, who received five bullet injuries, had been rushed to Fortis Hospital in Ghaziabad along with other injured. Their condition is said to be critical.

[…]

The BJP are a somewhat moderate Hindu nationalist party and is, I think, the largest political party.

Who the assassins are is unknown. But if it turns out to be Dalit, or Muslim, or whatever, then I expect this might flare even more.

This is what happens when identity politics become more than just debate.

Congress rakes up Punjab cow vigilante issue in Parliament

Chandigarh: Three days after a Patiala-based cow vigilante’s gory videos, showing brutal thrashing of alleged cattle smugglers, led to Punjab Police registering a case against their head, the Congress on Thursday hit out at SAD-BJP coalition in Parliament.

The issue was raked up by Ludhiana MP Ravneet Bittu, who said the livelihood of lakhs of farmers engaged in cattle rearing was getting affected everyday in Punjab due to vigilante threat. “We all respect cows and each and every one of us are passionate about their protection. The recent revelations in Punjab and country reveal a nasty story. That’s not cow protection. This is violation of law of the land. I’ve got some real problems with this poll - Normally, there will be some weighting of polling respondents, but almost never to this extent.

The results include 448 Republicans, 305 Democrats and 265 others

That is almost a 30% adjustment in favor of total number of Republicans polled, and less than 10% between Democrats and Independents.

re: #259 Bill and Opus for 2016!

I’ve got some real problems with this poll - Normally, there will be some weighting of polling respondents, but almost never to this extent.

That is almost a 30% adjustment in favor of total number of Republicans polled, and less than 10% between Democrats and Independents.

OTOH it’s Texas and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find out R’s heavily outnumber D’s there. Also older people tend to answer the phone while younger people are like:

Right and the reason why I don’t see it getting any better is the GOP doesn’t have the balls to confront its racist base that it created. And furthermore the base is going to be more angry after yet another electoral defeat and will believe it was fraud.

Overall, Texas is fairly purple. The reason they have so many Righwing nutcases in office is because of rampant (and I mean RAMPANT) disenfrancisement of minority voters throught Gerrymandering, racially-motivated Voter ID laws, and closing/reducing operating hours of voter registration offices - but only in areas where the majority of registered voters are Democrats. A reminder - it was Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott (who just so happens to now be Governor) who pushed the attempt, and partially succeeded in overturning the Voting Rights Act.

And yet the Voter ID laws he pushed for make it harder for other people with disabilities to vote. Fuck him.

Pawn of the Oppressor  Aug 11, 2016 • 9:00:22pm

I have some catch-up reading to do in this thread…

So was there no mention of Michael Phelps breaking a 2000+-year-old Olympic record this evening? An article circulated this morning which explained that the last guy to be individual champion of 12 events in consecutive Olympiads was a Leonidas of Rhodes in the 160’s BCE. Phelp’s win tonight broke that record, so he’s arguably the greatest Olympian ever, if you count a certain way.

I watched his race just for that, and it was amazing to see a 31-year-old guy (“old” by athletic standards), who dropped out and made a comeback, beat the swim pants off his competition by two whole seconds. The closest equivalent I can think of in sports is Valentino Rossi in motorcycle racing.

I don’t like the quadrennial ritual fetishization of American lady gymnasts, but Simone Biles is fantastic. She looks STRONG, she’s got arms like iron and somehow makes hard movements look as natural as breathing. Pretty cool stuff.

And now, on to the Rogue One trailer…

Yeah, and right now that is are Anti-Christian attacks going on in India at the rate of once a week, and similarly, Anti-Muslim attacks are constant.

The RSS, which is affiliated with the BJP, has said they want to push out the Christians and Muslim. In regards to the Christians there, some of them have been there an incredibly long time. The St. Thomas Christians. They have been there since the time of Claudius. And apparently, the Hindutva want to wipe out that history.

Or call out the utter bullshit that fox feeds its viewers. Or come up with ideas for governing because government is bad and if they ever try to govern, they’ll be shown as the liars, frauds and con artists they are…because any attempt to govern is selling out.

The right wing literally broke the government and if something isn’t down me, we will not be a functioning country. We are limping along now. It can’t continue indefinitely. It just can’t.

Wow I didn’t know things were that bad for India’s Christians. It’s interesting that we don’t really hear the Christian right complaining about this.

I’ll disagree, living in Austin as I do. Texas isn’t purple because the people that come out and vote every cycle are hard red.

Good trivia question: Who was the first Republican after Reconstruction for President who won Texas? It wasn’t Reagan. It was Hoover in 1928 because Texans couldn’t vote for a Papist like Al Smith. This State is the ultimate reservoir of the concept of rugged individualism. It makes no difference that the facts indicate that the State runs off of oil and gas revenue and corporate favors. It’s the meme that will not die.

Anne Richards beat Clayton Williams for Governor in 1990 because he was an asshole and wouldn’t shake her hand. Really.

George W. beat her in 1994 because her Lieutenant Governor passed a concealed carry law that she opposed and cut her guts out. It was a brutal. And no Democrat has won a State-wide election since, Judge or Commissioner. If you have an R after your name, you are golden. Which is why our AG is still in office despite a Federal Indictment.

Texas could be purple, or even blue, but it would require black and brown people to register and vote. And, up to this point in time, they don’t/won’t.

As my buddy Ramiro Garcia says, “My peeps don’t vote.” He’s right. In this State, Hispanics concentrate on Church and Family, and ignore politics.

Until that changes, Texas will remain solidly Red at the State level.

However…..in this election cycle, it is conceivable that in the suburbs of Dallas and Houston, that Trump will disgust enough R’s that Hillary will take the State. Odds on that right right now? I’d say 45% percent.
