What are they making at GE’s locomotive factory in Erie?

Locomotives… something they’ve been doing for about 100 years there.

That guy suffers from severe superlative depletion. At a certain point of saying everything is either the worst thing ever, or the best thing ever, you can no longer distinguish between, for example, mildly unpleasant and catastrophic, or between ‘kinda okay’ and ‘fucking amazing’. And with Trump, EVERYTHING has to be the whitest white, or the blackest black.

I’m still amazed that ANYONE listening to him doesn’t just start laughing and walk away.

40
Shiplord Kirel  Aug 12, 2016 • 11:59:14am

“Putin’s bitch” will become an iconic moment in this campaign. I don’t normally endorse heckling a speaker but it only took a moment and the guy was promptly thrown out (as the Trumpites were within their rights to do.) Took a lot of guts and perfect timing.

It is the most important message of this political era and needs to be emphasized in every possible forum as often as possible.

Speaking of Putin’s bitches, a Woodward-Bernstein level investigation of the conspiracy industry is in order. When was the last time Alex Jones or Assange “revealed” anything negative about the Kremlin regime, for example?
A congressional investigation might have better resources, but I am not interested in another HUAC.
Something along the lines of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission might be appropriate though.
Post election violence by conspiracist dupes might trigger it, and then some.

I was a bit off in a lower thread. Papi Bush ‘92 had the worst percentage performance of any postwar GOP candidate, but the worst of the last 100 years was Alf Landon ‘36 who got 36.5% of the vote, definitely doable the way Trump is going. Worst Republican all-time, Taft ‘12 with only 23.2% of the vote is probably out of reach, since #NeverTrump didn’t get a candidate even remotely similar to Teddy to split the GOP vote. But at least its a goal the Donald can shoot for.

127
lawhawk  Aug 12, 2016 • 12:32:46pm

1) It totally is Trump’s fault.
2) The GOP do have a tougher path, since they’ve chosen to side with the bigot brigade and eschew minorities in favor of restoring white guys to a place of primacy by curbing civil/voting rights of minorities a key part of their platform/rhetoric.
3) Demographics show that white guys are an increasingly smaller demographic and minorities are ever more important factors in winning elections.
4) GOTV is important, and Trump is entirely ignoring it.
5) Trump believes his own hype (and his supporters are already running through denial - claiming that the polls and election are rigged against Trump, even though reality is that Trump’s an awful candidate losing badly with no “rigging”).

The Hill, May 29, 2016:
Trump thought biker rally crowd would resemble ‘I Have a Dream’ speech

“I thought this would be like Dr. Martin Luther King where people were lined up from here all the way to the Washington Monument,” Trump said Sunday at the annual Rolling Thunder rally, where thousands of motorcyclists honor U.S. prisoners of war and missing-in-action troops.

The billionaire claimed that more than half a million people attempted to attend his speech, “but unfortunately they aren’t allowed to come in.”

CBS News reported that a crowd count was unavailable, but the space in front of the Lincoln Memorial was far from full.

To determine the number of signatures required to be gathered from each petition district, the Secretary of State calculates the amount that equals 10 percent of the voters who voted in this State at the last preceding general election and divide that amount by the number of petition districts. Fractional numbers must be rounded up to the nearest whole number. That equates to roughly 5,431. You typically get a lot more than that in order to overcome any challenges.

Shhh…. wouldn’t want anyone to know how much golf Ike played (and he had a putting green installed at his Gettysburg farm).

Ike was also nuts about the game of bridge. There was a legend that he made skill at bridge a requirement for his staff during World War II. I doubt that, since Ike was far more serious and conscientious about selecting subordinates than, say, MacArthur. The latter had a career-long habit of surrounding himself with sycophants. I am convinced that this was a major reason that Mac’s forces were caught by strategic surprise no fewer than 3 different times during his career, with dire results. In 1941, his Far East Command in the Philippines allowed its air force to be destroyed on the ground despite 9 hours of warning from Pearl Harbor and Malaya.
In 1950, his occupation army in Japan was completely unprepared for the initial North Korean invasion of the south. The command did not have a single anti-tank weapon capable of stopping the Soviet T-34/85, even though one of his missions was to resist a Soviet invasion of Japan. The army of occupation, 4 divisions strong, had badly neglected field exercises and even basic PT (source:This Kind of War by TR Fehrenbach).
Later in 1950, Mac’s gang was surprised yet again by the massive Chinese intervention. At one point, he had his pilot fly his luxuriously furnished C-54 over the frozen wastes of North Korea so he could personally reconnoiter the possibility. He looked out the window, saw no Chinese, and concluded that the rumored intervention was commie disinformation. For this he awarded himself a Distinguished Flying Cross. 3 days later, the Chinese struck, catching the UN forces out of position and causing the worst single day’s American casualties since World War II (800 dead, 2500 wounded or captured.)

His later insubordination was reason enough to give him the boot, but it wasn’t the only reason. Even if Truman and the Joint Chiefs had wanted to start World War III, they would have wanted someone else in charge.

I remember there being pools in public parks all over my Middle GA town when I was growing up, and I remember that even though my parents were homeowners and paid taxes to support those pools, no one in my family could use them. There was only one pool in the entire town that blacks could use, and it was always crowded. After the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964, city leaders filled in all of the pools with dirt. This was a clear signal that there would be no “race mixing” in these pools.

A California motorist is making quite a show of apology after he was videotaped ranting at a bicyclist he cut off calling him a “dead man walking,” before threatening to “pull a Trump” on him, reports the SF Gate.

Ryan Lewis called himself “just an old surfer, knucklehead, and I do apologize for using the words that I used,” after being confronted with the videotape, and acknowledging that he was unaware that he illegally pulled into a bike-share lane.

In the video, the bicyclist can be heard telling the passing Lewis, “Don’t hit me.”

Confronting the cyclist, Lewis bellows, “What are you gonna do? Put it on tape? Surfer against a queer, huh? Is that what you’re gonna do, tough guy? You’re not so tough, are you, small guy? You’re a short little guy.”

As the cyclist attempts to explain the rules of the road, Lewis continues on by making threats, including telling the cyclist, he’s a “dead man walking.”

“You’re a tiny little man, you think you’re a big shot,” Lewis said. “I oughta smack you so f*cking good. If there wasn’t any witnesses, you know what I’d do to you? I’d pull Trump on ya.”

Asked his name, Lewis replies, “My name is your worst enemy, motherf*cker. I’m your huckleberry, buddy.”

He sounds nice….

The fat man in the white t-shirt is motel owner James Brock, who also poured muriatic acid into the pool to force the demonstrators out. A week earlier, Brock had had MLK arrested for attempting to eat at the motel’s restaurant. Muriatic acid is a standard pool cleaning chemical and would not have harmed the swimmers at the very low concentration seen. Brock apparently hoped they wouldn’t know that though and was in fact trying to terrorize them into leaving. A few weeks later he did integrate the motel, pool, restaurant and all, for which the local Klan fire-bombed the place.

Death of a direct family member (spouse, parent, child, sibling) in combat in the service of the United States Armed Forces, not political alignment.

(Looks at own avatar)

Yes, Mr. Trump, I watched Mr. Khan’s speech when I was in Canada. Every word he said was relevant. Does that mean I am not worthy of being a Gold Star child?

I would have been on that stage myself if I had been asked. Trump really doesn’t understand much beyond how to hire a lawyer for bankruptcies, does he?

The spokesperson is Carl Paladino, known to us New Yorkers as the loud-mouthed asshole who got his ass kicked in the NY gubernatorial election by Andrew Cuomo.

Kind of the upstate version of Trump. Real estate developer, wannabe tough guy, unrepentant asshole.

But it’s sold as a rather dilute solution, classically for cleaning mortar stains from walls, hence the Latin root.

There’s gonna be a lot of job openings in Turkey in the not too distant future it seems

With tens of thousands of officials, academics and teachers being suspended or arrested in Turkey, more and more people are starting to fear for their futures. In particular young and well educated Turks are leaving the country.

It’s a video report. Apparently, we’re seeing the beginning of a brain drain from Turkey.

I very much doubt that. Not sure if you saw it since you were on your Canadian trip but the NC GOP tried to attack Kaine for wearing what they thought was a Honduras flag pin when in reality it was a pin for a parent of a USMC member. GOP really showing how much they know and respect our military with this shit.

Yeah, I saw that. I would have thrown a brick at the television if I had one.

I now wear my pin every time I go out. (I only used to wear it for special occasions. No one here would be confused about the meaning of the pin, knowing me, though my mother gets questions about hers in Chicago - amounting to “what is that pin for.”)

What gets me steamed about news like this is that all RW members of Congress have to offer in the fight is more whining, complaining, and critiquing the president’s decisions. The b*st*rds are too d*mn cowardly to even consider the AUMF President Obama sent them over a year ago. They’re trying desperately to sell the idea that if he just says “radical Islam,” ISIS members will lay down their arms immediately and agree to be detained at Gitmo. I detest the thinking of those who offer simple solutions to complex issues.

The Affrilachian Poets, a diverse Lexington-based collective of writers directly or indirectly connected to Appalachia, has rejected its 2016 Governor’s Award in the Arts, citing Gov. Matt Bevin’s positions on education, the humanities and other issues.

“It is the opinion of the group that the governor’s comments, positions and actions regarding education in general, the Humanities specifically, universal healthcare, criminal justice reform, and the LGBTQ community have been reprehensible and go against the core of who we are as writers and educators and as artists committed to resisting oppression,” the group said in a statement posted on Facebook. “It is in the spirit of Kentucky’s rich literary tradition reaching back to William Wells Brown, that we vehemently reject any award given in this governor’s name.”

snip

The crux of the issue was, “The governor’s actions, positions and comments, and the things he represents, are in direct conflict with things we believe in as artists and writers and that we have been writing against and commenting on in our 25 years in existence as a group,” Walker said. “It would just be a direct conflict of interest to suggest by accepting the award that we endorse any of his positions.”

The group had considered other options, including going to the October ceremony and rejecting the award there or simply not showing up, Walker said. But the group decided not to handle it that way out of respect to the Kentucky Arts Council and the other winners, and because they wanted to make a statement now, he said.

“We wanted to approach this thing in as civil a way as possible but still register our discontent,” said Walker, a professor of African American and Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center.

Bill and Opus for 2016!  Aug 12, 2016 • 3:04:29pm

I see that Donald Trump fans who are supposedly respected policymakers are dragging the Overton Window into some very, very dangerous territory after furiously building a shaky false equivalency with patriotism.

Nationalism Is Not Necessarily a Bad Thing

An elite globalist may scoff at the arbitrariness of national border and style himself “a citizen of the world,” as Barack Obama described himself before a massive crowd in Berlin in 2008. But most people don’t think of themselves that way. Nation-states inspire loyalties in a way the United Nations or the European Union have failed to do.

Nationalism, properly understood, can be a positive force, welding otherwise disparate people together to build a decent society, secure a competent government and rally to defend themselves against attack. Each nation has developed its own particular culture, its own manners and mores, its own rules, written and unspoken.

An intelligent nationalist can respect the strengths of other nations, while preferring his own, just as an Olympics fan can appreciate the superb performance of athletes from other countries even while keeping an eye on the medal scoreboard.

Interesting if complex analysis. This line may be especially significant here in Texas:

“And Trump has run afoul of locally popular politicians, such as Ted Cruz and George W. Bush.”

Dubya still has his admirers here, but Cruz is a revered figure among Texas Republicans and his conflict with Trump is a major concern. How may of them will hold their noses and vote for Hillary is less important than how many will stay home or vote for Johnson.

I’m ok now. Took a walk outside in the broiling heat. It’s beautiful around here anyway, half a square mile where I can have conspira-loons and Trumpsters arrested if they dare to set foot inside the fence. Helped clear my mind of wacko annoyance.

He’ll need the schtick to do so well.

I found the map. It is so mesmerizing.

By the way, does anyone else see a red Llama reaching to heaven with its forleg, beseeching God for forgiveness, while sporting a horribly distended anus and cancerously lesioned tail?

You’ve been over-mesmerized.

re: #302 Shiplord Kirel

Interesting if complex analysis. This line may be especially significant here in Texas:

Dubya still has his admirers here, but Cruz is a revered figure among Texas Republicans and his conflict with Trump is a major concern. How may of them will hold their noses and vote for Hillary is less important than how many will stay home or vote for Johnson.

It may be simpler than that. We have a dear friend who has the misfortune of living in Plano, where most people refuse to fly on airplanes that don’t have two right wings.

We visited last week and she says the folks in Plano don’t know whether to shit or go blind. They know that the Armani-Wrapped Hate Cheetoh is nuts, but they have never voted for something with a D after its name.

I think that’s probably true in a lot of the ‘burbs in Texas this year. It could, just could, happen. Remember that Texans voted for a Republican in 1928 (!!), when Hoover was running against that Papist Al Smith.

But they’ll happily go back to voting for Cruz in 2020.

It makes me wonder if (assuming at some point they recognize that fear failed to sell) the Republicans will ever manage to remake themselves into a functional political party, and on what basis.

It is NEVER over! It is part of mankind’s beating heart, a portion of the very essence of the human spirit and the competitive strive towards…

…Yeah, lost my fervent comment 25% into it. Short answer: pretty much, excluding the standard start of the 2016-2017 leagues around the world..

But, there is nobody running the enterprise. Who is “they”? There is no they. Rinsed Pubus? They had the , what was it, the after action report after Mitt snuggled the pooch. We all know that they are idiots, or worse, depraved self serving capitalists. How can they recover? At this point I am pretty sure it would be like a drunk driver suddenly switching to Fresh Air with Terry Gross and driving right.
No way. I gave up on them and want to just beat them at the polls from President to Dog Catcher. [no offense to Dog Catchers. Actually, probably only relatives of Dog Catchers will respond anyway.]

Also, bear in mind that their models don’t even attempt to factor in Trump’s near total eschewing of GOTV and ground game infrastructure.

Most of the “experts” think GOTV and ground game is worth 2 or 3 points. That’s hugely significant in a close swing state, but meaningless when the polling lead is more than that.

The way it’s shown in that picture, it’s British for fuck off. But if he rotates his hand, same gesture but palm side out, it’s 1960’s/1970’s American for peace.
