Our president-elect has been on a Twitter ranting binge all night and most of the morning, very agitated about the election recount currently under way. And this morning he capped off his stream of angry comments with this unhinged tweet, claiming there were “millions of people who voted illegally” for Hillary Clinton.

In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally

Where did this bizarre counter-factual claim originate? Our president-elect apparently picked it up from the website of his friend, conspiracy-monger Alex Jones: Report: Three Million Votes in Presidential Election Cast by Illegal Aliens » Alex Jones’ Infowars.

The Infowars article cites as evidence two tweets by a random guy who provides no evidence at all for the claim.

We have verified more than three million votes cast by non-citizens. We are joining .@TrueTheVote to initiate legal action. #unrigged

Some people on Twitter are suggesting that Donald Trump is posting these freaky tweets to distract people from his huge conflicts of interest with his businesses.

First of all, if you can’t criticize a tweet and keep your attention on a giant conflict of interest story at the same time, maybe you need to lay off the Xanax.

But more importantly, I doubt he’s trying to distract from anything. We already know that he and many of his closest advisers including members of his family get their “news” from sources like Alex Jones. I believe Trump really, truly is this deranged.

It *is* interesting that Trump is suddenly bleating about illegal voters at the very same time some people are saying that the Wisconsin re-canvass in four precincts is showing more votes cast than registered voters (which is now being blamed on a “modem error”), but every single one of those extra votes were for Trump.

But this is not a new phenomenon.

Looking at the headlines that come across the feeds and Google News… clearly demonstrates that “facts” are not so valued.

Maybe facts never were.

We need to be careful about building our own mythology about the “good ol’ days”.

Just like some Americans today believe the 1950’s was some idealistic era, we ought not think there was an era in which American society was somehow more factual, more scientific, more rational than it is today.

No doubt that it’s partially why Hillary’s campaign team declined to initiate the recount process. They probably wanted to maintain the peaceful transfer of power (as much as can be expected with this dumpster fire).

This could go several ways in my mind. Maybe I’m overthinking it but who knows now…

1) Nothing changes.

2) Trump prevails in all three states, but his win margin is whittled away to the MOE.

3) Trump loses one or two out of the three states, but still maintains an EV advantage (faithless electors notwithstanding), undermining him and the administration. He becomes even more dangerously unpredictable.

4) Trump loses all three states, albeit narrowly. Hillary is named the new winner… or is deadlocked at 270 EVs (due to faithless electors) thus turning the election to the lame-duck GOP House. Even if Trump wins, he’s severely weakened and even MORE dangerously unpredictable.

That is a good point. But I do think there’s been a shift. It used to be that the public got their news as presented by the “experts” in the MSM, and alternative media did not have the same possibility of getting heard. These experts of course bring their own biases, and their reporting and framing of facts often did (and still does) reflect the dominant ideology of the country. But they understand themselves as having a fidelity to truth above all else, and they have something like a shared sense of what objective reporting looks like.

I do believe that something has significantly changed when so many people are “informed” by stories trending among their facebook friends etc. (This also drives what counts as a “news” site for google news, I believe.) The function of informing the public is thereby taken away from the experts in the MSM and democratized. Everyone can have direct access to a lot of the source data, as in the Wikileaks dump, and anyone can put their own interpretation of the data before the social media marketplace of ideas, build a blog, and gather followers without the kind of capital investment required to start a newspaper or tv network.

In a way, we are thereby returned to the era before there were professional journalists at all. It’s like a small town where news spreads by word of mouth leading to a lot of a false rumors since people have heard it from people they trust.

I’m not sure a candidate has to accept the results of the EC. All such candidate would have to do is not be sworn in as President.

Remember, there is an intangible, undefined agreement that the person who is actually sworn into office is the person the EC chose. Or if the EC fails, then the person the House selects.

There is nowhere written what happens if an elected/selected person decides not to be sworn into office.

I would be ok with the House electing the President. In some ways, that is a step towards what I think needs to happen, that it would shed so much light on the politics of the House that more Americans may vote in the midterms.

I think it is prudent to point out that requiring a birth certificate in order to vote in a federal election is the same thing as a poll tax.
And for married women who do not retain their maiden names, it’s even more costly to get the required paperwork.
In Texas (and I suspect soon in other states), it’s an even bigger nightmare because ID requirements are contradictory.

Trump’s paranoid insecurity will never be assuaged because it’s a component of his (malignant) narcissism. He’s not trying to prove his legitimacy to his supporters, he’s trying to prove it to himself. He’ll never measure up because whatever happened to him to cause him to be the way he is has ensured that the metric will constantly be in flux, causing the validation he craves to always be just out of his reach.

It’s going to be worse now that he’ll be on a gobal stage with billions witnessing every (perceived) slight, every failure. He now has to prove himself not just to NYC society, or his peers, or even Americans, he has to prove himself to the entire world. He can’t bully every world leader into cooperating or praising him, so his mission is doomed.

It’s going to be brutal. I think he senses that on some level, because no matter how much wealth, power, and adulation he accumulates, he’s utterly helpless in the face of his pathology—it will whisper in his ear, taunting him, until he takes his last breath.

I want to also prompt anyone who would so do, to not conflate “post-truth” with “post-modern” as an analytical tool. Again, there were lampoon-able extremists, but few ever gave up the idea that there are facts. You couldn’t give a talk at a major conference by simply making up a string of counterfactual shit.

That’s why we are not living in a post-truth world. We are living in a cynical age where some people are not trying to deconstruct, but are simply saying that whatever the winners say goes. That was the ultimate fear, always. As belafon wrote, we are just living in an avalanche of lies.

Exactly. I used to not care at all if people said Merry Christmas since most people do celebrate it, and it is meant as a friendly gesture. But now I can’t help having the sneaking suspicion that they’re *consciously* trying to flaunt their cultural dominance. I did hear a report on NPR this afternoon, weekend edition of All Things Considered, about the alt-right, and it coming out from under the rocks under Trump. It started off with quotes for Jared Taylor and Richard Spencer about how they _certainly_ weren’t white supremacists, oh no! Then there were long interviews with Ian Haney Lopez, a professor from Berkeley who pointed out their rhetoric, and how all you had to do was look at their writings or their websites to see that Taylor and Spencer were both lying.

Then they played audio of Spencer doing Hail Trump, etc., with the crowd yelling Hail! They talked about what they were trying to do in mainstreaming white supremacy. Then they talked about how the white supremacists now had Bannon scheduled to be in the White House, and how absolutely appalling this was.

Then they did a long interview with Deborah Lipstadt, who has fought Holocaust deniers (read David Irving) for decades, and she really lit into the “alt-right” and what it meant.

I was quite pleased with them! Good two clips!

BTW, ownership of copyrights and trademarks are regulated differently, under different laws. But you need to establish the date of your creation of either one. The certified letter would provide such evidence.

Exactly! Trump could really benefit from having Romney on board, especially abroad, calming down those pesky foreigners. Kellyanne was yelling that it would be a betrayal, and other courtiers were demanding that Mitt grovel … but they’re up against someone who doesn’t need to. Oh, Mitt can see a way to benefit, but he only benefits if he retains his dignity and independence, and he knows that. Otherwise, he becomes (instantly) the leader of the establishment opposition, and that’s not a terrible place for Romney to be.

Speaking as a lefty, I’d rather have Giuliani, who would be terrible in every sense but ultimately a laughing-stock. But not Bolton, who would of course be (and make the country) a laughing-stock but also seems more likely to drive us into a flat-out war with Russia or China. But with DJT fidgeting, all bets are off.

Nixon was paranoid by 1968, for sure. But I wouldn’t call him a conspiracy theorist. He had a lot of political rivals that did not like him - the Kennedys, Warren (who likely might have run for president in 1960 had Eisenhower not appointed him to the Court), and to some extent even Reagan (Nixon did not like Reagan running as a favorite son in 1968). His paranoia ultimately led to his downfall at the Watergate Hotel.

Nixon was paranoid by 1968, for sure. But I wouldn’t call him a conspiracy theorist. He had a lot of political rivals that did not like him - the Kennedys, Warren (who likely might have run for president in 1960 had Eisenhower not appointed him to the Court), and to some extent even Reagan (Nixon did not like Reagan running as a favorite son in 1968). His paranoia ultimately led to his downfall at the Watergate Hotel.

Wasn’t Nixon in ‘68 the first one to say “it’s not paranoia if they really are out to get you”?

Or maybe it was “even paranoids have real enemies.”

No immediate for a lawyer. Write yourself a letter detailing the copyrightable material, trademarks, logos and what not, and send it by certified mail to yourself. Do not open the envelope until such time as you go to court to contest violation of the copyright or trademark ownership.

BTW, ownership of copyrights and trademarks are regulated differently, under different laws. But you need to establish the date of your creation of either one. The certified letter would provide such evidence.

Dude, no. Trademarks rights are established by use in commerce and copyrights by publication. Secretly writing yourslef a letter does nothing.
