The Ritual Humiliation of Mitt Romney

Kneel before Trump

A very consistent behavioral pattern of Donald Trump is his need to not just defeat and dominate his rivals, but to totally humiliate them even after they’re defeated.

And now it’s Mitt Romney’s turn. He’s being considered for Secretary of State, but if he wants the job he’s going to have to grovel for it — and all because he took a principled (but obviously futile) stand against Trump during the campaign.

Here’s Kellyanne Conway bashing the hell out of Romney on CNN.

In a way, I hope Romney does get the Secretary of State position, because even though I’m definitely not one of his fans he’d probably be the most sane person in the Trump administration. All the other people Trump’s been picking so far are completely bonkers, and most of them have absolutely no experience in government.

So if you’re a non-insane Republican, and you try to suck it up and help Trump not destroy the world, your thanks is getting publicly humiliated. Bigly.

If Romney takes the job and has to bow to the Trump, what kind of a signal does that send to the world about his ability and character as Secretary of State?

Sort of makes me think he would be seen as a weak fool and untrustworthy if he represents the person that crapped all over him. A strange dynamic at the very least.

Yes, bcause that’s definitely the way you cultivate loyal, comitted subordinates. I’m pretty sure there’s an entire chapter called “Pointlessly Vindictive and Counterproductive Dominance Rituals” in How To Win Friends and Influence People.

Why would Romney even bother? Does he believe he can become more famous because being SoS will make him known more outside the US?

An essential element of Trumpism is being a bully. We got that.

But if you’re Romney, with houses everywhere, a few hundred million dollars in net worth, adored by his religion and guaranteed the speaker gig for the rest of his life… why bother?

That’s the only way Mitt will ever become President.

Millions of illegal votes would have either shown up as dead people voting, which would have been obvious to the people working the voting, or live people voting, and there would have been lots of people being told they already voted. Part of it was that the Dems managed to save us from the worst consequences of things here at home during the 2008 financial disaster.

Trump needs to unambiguously screw things up with his and the GOP’s fingerprints all over the crime scene, and the screw-up has to be epic enough that even the idiots who comprise 27% of our polity have this branded into their nightmares for the next 30 years.

That means we give him enough rope to do it.

In the meantime we had Thanksgiving today due to family issues and work schedules. I did a classic stuffed turkey with baked potato and corn on the cob and I remembered my preferred prayer of thanksgiving:

A Prayer of Giving Thanks
November 28, 2013 by Mark Sandlin

Good and gracious God,
There is a tension that comes
with giving thanks.
Even as we recognize
and are grateful for
the blessings in our lives,
we are confronted with
enjoying our abundance
as we recognize the reality
that there are those
who have far too little.
Even as we celebrate a holiday
with roots which reach back
to the beginnings of our nation,
we are confronted with
the reality of
the genocide and slavery
upon which it was found.
We do not forget these things.
We do not celebrate them.
We do not give thanks for them.
In this our tale of Thanksgiving,
they are the terrible storyline
which we must not forget.
Our pride,
our arrogance
and our pursuit of possessions
have constantly stood
alongside of our blessings
as a reminder.
They remind us why we give thanks.
They remind us that life
is sacred and fragile
and that we
are its biggest threats.
They remind us that we do not want
to be those people again,
people who lord over others
and are self-adsorbed and self-important.
They remind us to appreciate
what we do have.
So, we give thanks.
We give thanks for this moment.
We give thanks for the things
that are right about the world
right now,
in this moment.
We give thanks for family and friends.
We give thanks for love and laughter.
We give thanks for grace and good company.
We give thanks for the tension
we find in a day like today
because it provides us the insight
and the motivation
to create better tomorrows.
Not just for ourselves,
not just for our families,
not just for our friends
but for the world.
So, today and everyday,
we give thanks
and we work to create a world
that gives more reasons
for which to be thankful.
Amen.

But I do hope that enough of the derangement is demonstrated that the “Republican” brand is poisoned for many years.

The GOP’s “evil madman prevails and realizes his newfound power trope” overreach on practically everything will assist in that.

I understand…and I have Medicare, SSD (which I may well lose if Ryan has his way) and a kid who is autistic and has his own challenges.

Our future is already precarious. We may have to go into a long period of darkness to make this point…and I firmly believe that you reap what you sow. If we elect a nightmare…then the voters need to experience the consequences of that. That also means that my family may suffer an awful lot for things we did not deserve.

That is part and parcel of being a representative democratic republic. Those white working class rust belt people are angry and want to make a point? So be it.

Let them experience everything that goes with it. I will already have to, but I want this to be nasty and painful enough for them to drive the point home without any possibility of misunderstanding.

America needs to understand this.

We elected a profoundly immoral and amoral narcissistic criminal into the most powerful position in the world. We, as a nation, deserve whatever we get.

And the GOP promptly regained the House in 2010 based largely on racial grievance and massive obstruction.

Maybe there is simply no overcoming that, to be honest. Maybe race hatred will the thing that sinks this country in the end. Maybe lies and cynicism will beat out truth and hope and progress. I really don’t know. I am a Hobbesian pessimist, personally. I don’t think things just tend to work out.

But Hoover was enough of a fuck up that he poisoned the GOP brand for a generation and I think it will take something on that scale to overcome the Russian troll farms, Breitbart and Fox News.

Certainly the 2010 backlash demonstrated how short memories are in modern day politics.

We are in the tyranny of the now.

But on to Hoover: by the few accounts I’ve read and heard, he was a decent man. Perhaps one of the few Presidents who really was a decent person (like Obama.) His big failure was that time had passed him by - Hoover didn’t realize that the changes in America and the world demanded a much different path than what he was able to envision.

So in that regards, perhaps the better parallel to Hoover is Obama (see my little essay from a few days ago), or perhaps the DNC of 2016.

We are now in the age of celebrity, not policy. In that regards too Obama demonstrated that in 2008, when he beat Clinton for the nomination when some oldtimers (like me) thought the Clinton machine would have easily beaten him.

But Obama had “it”, that mythical intangible that celebrities are supposed to have.

And, sadly, Trump has “it”.

America elected a celebrity. Not a majority of Americans, not even a plurality of the voters. But enough of the voters in WI, MI, and PA picked celebrity over policy to flip those Obama states.

And so now we have a celebrity President-elect.

Slight issue: The pain is also spread to the people that didn’t want it and voted for Hillary and others like children of the Trump voters, elderly and others that may have not voted and didn’t understand the ramifications, etc. We all will pay for this…and for some time.

That would be a decent reason to resist and fight off Trump as best as possible…why should everyone suffer because of the fools?

Thing is, Trump genuinely believes this. He truly believes he lost the popular vote and the electoral vote was so close because of a tremendous, impossible landslide of voter fraud.

This is genuine insanity. Not urban legend and hyperbole and me being insulting, this is paranoid delusional behavior. His level of paranoia and his breaks from reality are REAL.

I say this with nothing but respect for the mentally ill. I come from a family of paranoid schizophrenics, severe personality disorders, and bipolars, some highly functional but many institutionalized. I myself am highly functional bipolar. I do not insult Trump by saying he is mentally ill, I simply state his behavior matches what I have seen around me.

This election is past. I do not know the future. But I know he MUST be managed somehow. Because as his stress level rises this will get worse and worse. I do not expect him to make it a full term….I don’t expect him to make it a year.
