It seems almost plausible that Trump, Putin, and Assad colluded on the missile attack so Trump could dodge the Russiagate scandal. It’s a conspiracy theory in the literal sense, but the kind of conspiracy that really happens. National leaders do plot to manipulate events, relatively few people have direct knowledge, and it happens over a relatively short period. Crucially, it also differs from the typical commercial or Kremlin CT in not requiring an assumption that western “mainstream” media are secretly under some kind of rigid central control.
Alas, the evidence of the last few hours suggests that the Trump-Putin split is real. The usual stooges and conspiracy outlets have turned against Trump en masse. The unbelievably idiotic claim that “Assad wouldn’t bomb his own people” seems to have burst simultaneously from every dark corner of the net.
This is looking more and more like civil war in the nut-o-sphere, ‘baggers vs. Putinites and conspiracy dupes. I’d be lying if I denied that I am delighted at the prospect. Do I really want to sic millions of armed yahoos on the Kremlin conspiracy dupes? Better them than us.

As for the CT, some are more dismissable than others, since real conspiracies do exist. They are worth our time because they, and their pervasive influence, will not go away if we ignore them.

My 82 year old Dad fell down the stairs while we were gone. Luckily he wasn’t hurt, but they had to call 911 because my Mom is also disabled and couldn’t help him get up. I took a break from politics and the news for awhile. I feel better for it.
Went and saw this today:
This weekend was the American wide release of Your Name.
Simply stunning. Beautiful and moving beyond whatever I can say here.
It starts pleasantly enough as a light rom com involving two Japanese high school teens, a boy and girl, who switch bodies when they sleep. They cannot stop the occurrence, and after some comedic disorientation, begin to have fun changing each others lives while communicating instructions to each other through texts left on their respective phones. Midway through, the movie becomes something much more, as it meditates on memory, identity, loss and fate.
Readers familiar with 60’s English children’s literature and the 1981 Cure song based on Charlotte Sometimes will be strongly reminded of these themes. Be prepared to cry at points. Above all…see it.

The ruling comes four years after three same-sex couples filed a lawsuit against Nebraska, arguing that a 1995 state policy prohibiting gay couples from being foster care parents and adopting wards of the state is unconstitutional.
A state district court in 2015 ruled for the couples and ordered the state policy to be rescinded.
The state appealed to the Nebraska Supreme Court on the grounds that the couples did not have standing because they did not apply for and were not rejected for a foster care license or having a state ward placed in their homes.

Bad news out of Egypt.
A second blast has been reported near a church in northern Egypt, hours after at least 21 people were killed during a Palm Sunday service.
The explosion in front of a church in Alexandria has injured several people, according to state TV.
The earlier blast targeted St George’s Coptic church in the city of Tanta in the Nile Delta, about 130km south-east.
Egypt’s Christian minority has often been targeted by Islamist militants in recent years.

When we were in Moab to visit Arches, Canyonlands, and Mesa Verde, the La Sal Mountains always loomed in the distance like the Misty Mountains from the Lord of the Rings books (that’s what the Mrs. and I called them). The United States imposed sanctions on Eritrea’s navy over purchasing military equipment from North Korea.
Eritrea has long been on the UN’s and the USA’s bad-boy’s list for dealings with North Korea as well as its authoritarian government.
Equipment was interdicted being sold to Eritrea by North Korea through a Malaysian company.
Eritrea denies violating UN sanctions on North Korea. North Korea and Malaysia apparently had no comment.

WASHINGTON - RFE/RL has published never-before-seen color images of life in the Soviet Union in the 1950s, from a trove of original video and photographs that was recently discovered in cardboard boxes in a former auto body shop in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
The archive belonged to U.S. Army Major Martin Manhoff, who spent more than two years in the Soviet Union in the early 1950s, serving as assistant army attaché at the U.S. embassy. From his vantage point at the embassy, then located just off Moscow’s Red Square, he filmed what is thought to be the only independent footage of Stalin’s funeral procession, providing an unfiltered view of the event not conveyed in official Soviet reels.
Radio Free Europe is claiming that Russian social media is abuzz with the question “Where the hell were our missile defences” in regard to Syria.
The Russian Federation made a big show of deploying its S-400 surface-to-air missile system after Turkey shot down one of its aircraft nearly two years ago.
Speculation ranges from “the system didn’t work” to “the Americans deliberately picked a path to avoid the systems” to “Russia chose not to use it.”
S-400 SAM systems use four missiles to cover a range of distance from in close to hundreds of kilometres away.
Aytech Bizhev, the former deputy commander-in-chief of the Russian Air Force, told Interfax that the “flight path was set to bypass our missile-defense system so that they would not enter our strike range. The Americans are also not idiots.”

Nonetheless, the perceived inefficacy of the S-400s prompted an outburst of snarky commentary on Russian language social networks, with one Twitter user writing: “Listen, I just want to check — is Moscow also secured by S-300 and S-400s?”

I’ve seen it speculated (OK, by a few blog-commenters, but it’s a valid speculation anyway) that the Shayrat strike was designed* for that very purpose: mainly to test Russian/Russian-designed missile-defense capabilities: on-ground damage and/or casualties being a secondary consideration. Though conducting a live-fire exercise against hostile forces is probably a better environment for testing…
*If so, it was probably something long-planned by the Pentagon: I can’t imagine the idiot crew we have in the WH now coming up with a militarily-sophisticated exercise like this on short notice.

I tried to sift and fact check some obvious points. The question of why the vaunted Russian SAM systems left the attack unscathed is interesting. I made this to show a general idea of the range of some Russian systems. It’s from a simulation game, with a database more or less from Janes. Israel has hit Syria a few times in recent years and seems to avoid taking any casualties.
It seems Russian policy is to reserve those missiles as a threatened and affordable (compared to squadrons of fighters) no fly zone.
If one looks at what the Tomahawk can and can not do well, runways are on the not well list. It seems the only way to do that is dropping a bunch of glide bombs from an attack squadron.. A far riskier escalation.
Island chess. Meanwhile, in the South China Sea, China has sent a fighter jet to an island in the South China Sea also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan. The Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative obtained satellite imagery showing a Chinese J-11 fighter parked on Woody Island in the Paracel Island. China has sent military aircraft to the island before on a rotational basis, but the J-11’s appearance marks the first known appearance during the Trump administration.
Challenged on all sides, likely compromised by Russia Trump may lash out again. Where are the cooler heads? Absent.

My 82 year old Dad fell down the stairs while we were gone. Luckily he wasn’t hurt, but they had to call 911 because my Mom is also disabled and couldn’t help him get up. As their caretaker, I feel guilty about not being there. He promised me he wouldn’t go down the stairs and of course he didn’t listen. So stubborn. My Mom was so angry with him, she told the firemen that they might have to come back because she killed him. lol I came home to yell at him and his response: I really pulled a boner there. Haha. He cracks me up.

“The federal criminal justice system simply is not broken. In fact, it’s working exactly as designed,” Cook said at a criminal justice panel at The Washington Post last year.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has brought Cook into his inner circle at the Justice Department, appointing him to be one of his top lieutenants to help undo the criminal justice policies of Obama and former attorney general Eric H. Sessions has yet to announce specific policy changes, but Cook’s new perch speaks volumes about where the Justice Department is headed.
Law enforcement officials say that Sessions and Cook are preparing a plan to prosecute more drug and gun cases and pursue mandatory minimum sentences. The two men are eager to bring back the national crime strategy of the 1980s and ’90s from the peak of the drug war, an approach that had fallen out of favor in recent years as minority communities grappled with the effects of mass incarceration.
These assholes are signaling for the greatest crackdown since the 80s, and it’s obvious who’s going to bear the brunt of it. This despite, you know, the amount of drug related violence not rising in any appreciable way since we went ‘soft on crime’, as they put it. To hear them say it, we’re still a drug ravaged hellhole. if they want to see drugs and ravaging, look at the fucking opiod crisis…but I forget, that’s not a crime epidemic, that’s a health epidemic since the ones suffering the worst of it aren’t fucking brown.

Hacking blamed for emergency sirens blaring across Dallas early Saturday
Dallas officials blame computer hacking for setting off emergency sirens throughout the city early Saturday.
Rocky Vaz, director of Dallas’ Office of Emergency Management, said that all 156 of the city’s sirens were activated more than a dozen times.
Officials don’t know who was responsible for the hacking, but Vaz said “with a good deal of confidence that this was someone outside our system” and in the Dallas area.

We took care of wife’s mom for about the last 10 years of her life. She was doing quite well, even swimming 2x a week. Until she fell down the basement stairs and badly broke her shoulder and collarbone. Don’t let elderly people walk around with socks on (unless they have grippy bottoms). Grab bars in shower and toilet.
Valid question:
Will Assad use more chemical weapons? That question requires further questions. Does he have more stockpiles no one knows about? Plausible. How long would it take for him to make another batch for use in a weapons system? Experts would understand the difficulties and time to produce based on the fact Assad remains under sanctions and there’s an ongoing civil war.
Did he acquire the chemical weapons from his benefactor (I suggest this highly unlikely and improbable).
I’ve been watching right wingers like Ari Fleischman try to dump blame on Obama for the fact that Assad still had chemical weapons to use. None of them take any of the aforementioned questions into consideration, or that the only reason Assad decided to use chemical weapons on civilian populations was he got a wink/nod from Trump that regime change wasn’t going to happen.
Moreover, Assad’s killed more than 400,000 in his democide to remain in power. Chemical weapons are a tiny percentage of all the casualties, but those are the ones Trump acted upon with a half-assed ineffectual missile strike. Russia’s laughing all the way to the bank as they know Assad’s gonna be paying for more Russian systems, the conflict could bump the price of oil (helping Russia’s faltering economy, along with those of Iran), and Trump continues to bumble and stumble from one conflict to another with no idea what he’s doing. In fact, his underlings can’t even get on the same page as turmoil continues around Trump. McFarland’s out at NSC and the rest of the incompetents are fighting for primacy and Trump’s ear (whoever whispers last gets their policy heard for the minute).

Private appeals to mayors and district attorneys would have done more good and less harm than providing wavering voters with scenes of Democratic disarray, and encouraging uncertain Republican voters. I’m generally down on the value of any kind of protest other than checking the box next to the (D) on the ballot, because that’s the only one that directly leads to new policy.

Well, take it from an ancient geezer one who was there: Nixon may not have baldly stated that he “had a plan to end the war” - secret or otherwise - but he HAD campaigned on a pledge to “end it” (though details were not forthcoming either then or later). Which he did, more or less: even though it took three more years of war, hugely escalated combat, and vast amounts of bloodshed and suffering. By reelection time in 1972, the US’ involvement in Vietnam had been wound down to the point where it was no longer the bleeding cancer in the body politic it had been. Which certainly helped Nixon’s reelection efforts: the Democrats’ nomination of George McGovern as the “antiwar” candidate was seen as an anachronism even at the time: I’m not sure we’ve ever recovered from its effects even four decades on…

When translators are incapable of figuring out what Trump’s saying during official meetings, that increases the chances something will get misunderstood, misremembered, or simply not translated properly.
That’d be bad enough in a real estate deal, but it’s downright deadly in international relations where words have serious consequences.
In fact, to take one example - there’s two translations of UN SCR 242 (French and English, and both have equal force under the law).
In one version, the key phrase is “the territories” and in the other “territories”. What does a simple preposition mean?
For the Arabs and Israelis, it’s the difference between a belief that Israel can hold on to some territories captured in 1967, and the belief that Israel must withdraw from all territories captured.
