Interesting. I did some Googling and came across this involving McConnell’s daughter…
GHENT, N.Y. - More than a dozen parents have removed their children from an alternative, private school in a rural upstate county amid complaints about disciplinary tactics by one teacher.
Claire McConnell, who apologized in a letter June 24, was accused of strapping one child into a chair with a leather belt, tying the hands of others and taping shut the mouths of some elementary school students, the Albany Times Union reported Thursday.

She’s not even anti-war. She hated the Obama administration’s Iran deal. If she hadn’t supported Sanders, she’d be another “Neo-lib” to them. I have no problem with many of Sanders other Congressional Democratic supporters like Rep Grijalva and Ellison but Gabbard is awful.
And it’s quite an eclectic mix. Far left libertarians, neo-reactionaries, outright white supremacists, Trump supporters.

It seems almost plausible that Trump, Putin, and Assad colluded on the missile attack so Trump could dodge the Russiagate scandal. It’s a conspiracy theory in the literal sense, but the kind of conspiracy that really happens. National leaders do plot to manipulate events, relatively few people have direct knowledge, and it happens over a relatively short period. Crucially, it also differs from the typical commercial or Kremlin CT in not requiring an assumption that western “mainstream” media are secretly under some kind of rigid central control.
Alas, the evidence of the last few hours suggests that the Trump-Putin split is real. The usual stooges and conspiracy outlets have turned against Trump en masse. The unbelievably idiotic claim that “Assad wouldn’t bomb his own people” seems to have burst simultaneously from every dark corner of the net.
This is looking more and more like civil war in the nut-o-sphere, ‘baggers vs. Putinites and conspiracy dupes. I’d be lying if I denied that I am delighted at the prospect. Do I really want to sic millions of armed yahoos on the Kremlin conspiracy dupes? Better them than us.

Yes, it’s a CT and as such not worth anybody’s time.
So let’s discuss the idiotic “wouldn’t bomb his own people” meme instead.
How so? Why wouldn’t he after the US just a couple of days before indicated that it doesn’t care about Assad (and, implicitly, whatever he does)? And Trump indicated for a long time that he would like to make a deal with Assad.
The aim of a gas attack is to intimidate the population and make them give up. Given the background, Assad must have thought that Trump doesn’t give a shit (and Putin would support anything he does anyway). So he does this raid in order to quicken his victory without suspecting that Trump might do 180.
What is supposed to be so unrealistic about it?
re: #15 Charles Johnson
We’re seeing what happens when there’s really no coherent policy vision at all, just venal people grasping for power no matter what they have to do to get it.
It’s perversely comforting to think that Trump and Putin conspired in a charade. The alternative is to believe that Trump and his brain-dead advisers lashed out like this on their own. The evidence at this point supports the latter.
Book recommendation: Bird Box: A Novel by Josh Malerman.

What is supposed to be so unrealistic about it?
You’d need to ask the stooges and conspira-liars who make the claim.
As for the CT, some are more dismissable than others, since real conspiracies do exist. They are worth our time because they, and their pervasive influence, will not go away if we ignore them.
Even so, this one breaks down on several points, the most important being the absence of a quid pro quo for Trump ensuring that the attack was ineffective. Putin has no choice but to react exactly as he has, by condemning Trump and turning against him. He could hardly agree to do otherwise.
From Sun Tzu’s Art of War: There are three ways in which a sovereign can bring misfortune upon his army: By commanding the army to advance or to retreat, being ignorant of the fact that it cannot obey. This is called hobbling the army. By attempting to govern an army in the same way he administers a kingdom, being ignorant of the conditions that obtain in an army. This causes restlessness in the soldiers’ minds. Humanity and justice are the principles on which to govern a state, but not an army; opportunism and flexibility. on the other hand, are military rather than civic virtues.
All of the above and keep in mind that the uncouth one would think that Sun Tzu is a Chinese restaurant.

My 82 year old Dad fell down the stairs while we were gone. Luckily he wasn’t hurt, but they had to call 911 because my Mom is also disabled and couldn’t help him get up. As their caretaker, I feel guilty about not being there. He promised me he wouldn’t go down the stairs and of course he didn’t listen. So stubborn. My Mom was so angry with him, she told the firemen that they might have to come back because she killed him. lol I came home to yell at him and his response: I really pulled a boner there. Haha. The terrifying part of this statement is that they also call themselves “Strict Constitutionalists.” Proving that they have no idea what the constitution actually means. In addition to their lack of understanding, they also have the delusion that they can read the framer’s minds and know exactly what subtleties were meant in the writing. I took a break from politics and the news for awhile. I feel better for it.
Went and saw this today:
This weekend was the American wide release of Your Name.
Simply stunning. Beautiful and moving beyond whatever I can say here.
It starts pleasantly enough as a light rom com involving two Japanese high school teens, a boy and girl, who switch bodies when they sleep. They cannot stop the occurrence, and after some comedic disorientation, begin to have fun changing each others lives while communicating instructions to each other through texts left on their respective phones. Midway through, the movie becomes something much more, as it meditates on memory, identity, loss and fate.
Readers familiar with 60’s English children’s literature and the 1981 Cure song based on Charlotte Sometimes will be strongly reminded of these themes. Be prepared to cry at points. Above all…see it.

Nah, not the Pulitzer but I wonder if Vlad might revive the Stalin Prize? It was pretty good. When aircraft designer Alexander Yakovlev won it in 1940, the swag reportedly included 100,000 Rubles, a nice dacha near Moscow, and a new Pontiac Silver Chief.
I’ve mentioned before that Stalin apparently had a thing for Pontiacs, though General Motors understandably did not use this endorsement in their advertising.
Though at this point, I think I’m more enraged with the MSM enablers who help him get away with it:

The terrifying part of this statement is that they also call themselves “Strict Constitutionalists.” Proving that they have no idea what the constitution actually means. In addition to their lack of understanding, they also have the delusion that they can read the framer’s minds and know exactly what subtleties were meant in the writing. Because the language and context of word play has not changed since the original drafting of the constitution.
Not much different than my experience of anyone who claims to “know God’s mind.” Conservatism (like libertarianism) is a religion. And the only part about a religion that matters is not what’s in the holy book, but who interprets the holy book.

Pascal’s wager fails because it’s not really the binary they see. Choosing to believe in THEIR got puts me at odds with somebody else’s god. So, it’s not Either/Or. It’s Either/Or/Or/Or/Or/Or ad infinitum.
But every believer I’ve ever spoken to sees it as HIS god, or no god.

1) Pascal thought up the wager because he couldn’t find any other reason to believe in a god.

Pascal was quite aware of Hinduism and Islam. He rejected those out of hand.
As far as the “only reason not to murder and rape” is a fear of a threat of Hell, I have given the answer “by all means, don’t give up your faith then.” If that is the only reason a person doesn’t murder and rape, it seems to me to be a poor argument for your morality.
I don’t kill and rape because I don’t want to. I will never want to. (And killing and raping is promoted in various holy books anyway.)

Nebraska state supreme court overturns 1995 law banning gay couples from adopting children, arguing it is the same as a “whites only” sign.

More at US News
(Reuters) - A former state policy that banned gay couples from becoming foster parents was the same as a “whites only” employment sign, the Nebraska Supreme Court wrote in a ruling released on Friday that affirmed a lower court’s decision.
The ruling comes four years after three same-sex couples filed a lawsuit against Nebraska, arguing that a 1995 state policy prohibiting gay couples from being foster care parents and adopting wards of the state is unconstitutional.
A state district court in 2015 ruled for the couples and ordered the state policy to be rescinded.
The state appealed to the Nebraska Supreme Court on the grounds that the couples did not have standing because they did not apply for and were not rejected for a foster care license or having a state ward placed in their homes.

More on the issue of adoption and foster care at the Omaha World-Herald. They go into more detail than US News. They noted that the policy also prohibited hetero unmarried couples and single people from adopting or fostering children as well.
The case was brought, however, by three same-sex couples.

Bad news out of Egypt.
A second blast has been reported near a church in northern Egypt, hours after at least 21 people were killed during a Palm Sunday service.
The explosion in front of a church in Alexandria has injured several people, according to state TV.
The earlier blast targeted St George’s Coptic church in the city of Tanta in the Nile Delta, about 130km south-east.
Egypt’s Christian minority has often been targeted by Islamist militants in recent years.
The blasts appear to have been timed for maximum impact, as people gathered to mark Palm Sunday.
Egyptian security forces had been put on alert in anticipation of attacks.

Holocaust survivor Irene Zisblatt shares story of struggle and strength with Penn State community
While in the Auschwitz camp, Zisblatt had to repeatedly swallow the diamonds and excrete them in order to keep them from being taken from her.
“Every time I saw danger I swallowed them,” Zisblatt said. “Once a week, once a month, [it] depends what happened that day.”
[…]
Zisblatt was on the brink of extermination as she was escorted to a gas chamber with 1,500 women. The gas chamber wasn’t big enough for all of the women to fit in, so Zisblatt dug her nails to the wood that surrounded the outside of the chamber. When the guards were ordered to shut the door, she was in the way and got pulled out of the doorway. Since she only weighed fifty pounds at the time, she hid in between the ceiling of the gas chamber and the shelter roof until a Jewish boy tasked with working the gas chamber found her. He covered her naked body with his jacket and sent her on a train leaving Auschwitz for a labor camp.
Repeating such tall tales as the “survivor truth” is playing into the hands of the deniers.
Albeit Zisblatt was indeed in Auschwitz (though she incorrectly claims she had a tattoo and that it got removed by Mengele - she actually never had one since she was a so-called “transit Jew” and they did not get tattoos because they were not officially registered in the camp), her book and her lectures are full of exaggerations and false claims and in no way can be seen as reliable sources.

Radio Free Europe has published a number of colour films and photographs from the 1950’s of Moscow during the Soviet era, including what is believed to be the only non-official film of Stalin’s funeral.
WASHINGTON - RFE/RL has published never-before-seen color images of life in the Soviet Union in the 1950s, from a trove of original video and photographs that was recently discovered in cardboard boxes in a former auto body shop in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
The archive belonged to U.S. Army Major Martin Manhoff, who spent more than two years in the Soviet Union in the early 1950s, serving as assistant army attaché at the U.S. embassy. From his vantage point at the embassy, then located just off Moscow’s Red Square, he filmed what is thought to be the only independent footage of Stalin’s funeral procession, providing an unfiltered view of the event not conveyed in official Soviet reels.
Radio Free Europe is claiming that Russian social media is abuzz with the question “Where the hell were our missile defences” in regard to Syria.
The Russian Federation made a big show of deploying its S-400 surface-to-air missile system after Turkey shot down one of its aircraft nearly two years ago.
Speculation ranges from “the system didn’t work” to “the Americans deliberately picked a path to avoid the systems” to “Russia chose not to use it.”
S-400 SAM systems use four missiles to cover a range of distance from in close to hundreds of kilometres away.

Nonetheless, the perceived inefficacy of the S-400s prompted an outburst of snarky commentary on Russian language social networks, with one Twitter user writing: “Listen, I just want to check — is Moscow also secured by S-300 and S-400s?”

I’ve seen it speculated (OK, by a few blog-commenters, but it’s a valid speculation anyway) that the Shayrat strike was designed* for that very purpose: mainly to test Russian/Russian-designed missile-defense capabilities: on-ground damage and/or casualties being a secondary consideration. Though conducting a live-fire exercise against hostile forces is probably a better environment for testing…

And Haley’s remarks earlier too.
The buck stops with Trump though.
It does. This missile attack was a mere warning.
I tried to sift and fact check some obvious points. The question of why the vaunted Russian SAM systems left the attack unscathed is interesting. I made this to show a general idea of the range of some Russian systems. It’s from a simulation game, with a database more or less from Janes. Israel has hit Syria a few times in recent years and seems to avoid taking any casualties.
It seems Russian policy is to reserve those missiles as a threatened and affordable (compared to squadrons of fighters) no fly zone.
If one looks at what the Tomahawk can and can not do well, runways are on the not well list. It seems the only way to do that is dropping a bunch of glide bombs from an attack squadron.. A far riskier escalation.
Island chess. Meanwhile, in the South China Sea, China has sent a fighter jet to an island in the South China Sea also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan. The Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative obtained satellite imagery showing a Chinese J-11 fighter parked on Woody Island in the Paracel Island. China has sent military aircraft to the island before on a rotational basis, but the J-11’s appearance marks the first known appearance during the Trump administration.
Challenged on all sides, likely compromised by Russia Trump may lash out again. Where are the cooler heads? Absent.
Can any of these idiots form a coherent sentence? (Rhetorical question)
Nikki Haley, this morning:
“Regime change is something that we think is going to happen because all of the parties are going to see that Assad is not the leader that needs to be taking place for Syria.”
Also, it might help if they had some modicum of agreement on what their “plan” is before they go and shoot off their mouths on the teevee machine.

Haha. He cracks me up.
mine’s 87 and I’m basically his caretaker, though he’s mentally good enough to still spend his Sundays filling a pulpit in any one of three counties. So who’s looking forward to Jeff Sessions leading the way to a new decimation of minority neighborhoods all in the name of a new War on Drugs?
Because it sure as hell looks like it’ll happen, post-haste
But there was one person who watched these developments with some horror. Steven H. Cook, a former street cop who became a federal prosecutor based in Knoxville, Tenn., saw nothing wrong with how the system worked — not the life sentences for drug charges, not the huge growth of the prison population. And he went everywhere — Bill O’Reilly’s show on Fox News, congressional hearings, public panels — to spread a different gospel.
“The federal criminal justice system simply is not broken. In fact, it’s working exactly as designed,” Cook said at a criminal justice panel at The Washington Post last year.
[…]
Attorney General Jeff Sessions has brought Cook into his inner circle at the Justice Department, appointing him to be one of his top lieutenants to help undo the criminal justice policies of Obama and former attorney general Eric H. Holder Jr. As Sessions has traveled to different cities to preach his tough-on-crime philosophy, Cook has been at his side.
Sessions has yet to announce specific policy changes, but Cook’s new perch speaks volumes about where the Justice Department is headed.
Law enforcement officials say that Sessions and Cook are preparing a plan to prosecute more drug and gun cases and pursue mandatory minimum sentences. The two men are eager to bring back the national crime strategy of the 1980s and ’90s from the peak of the drug war, an approach that had fallen out of favor in recent years as minority communities grappled with the effects of mass incarceration.
These assholes are signaling for the greatest crackdown since the 80s, and it’s obvious who’s going to bear the brunt of it. This despite, you know, the amount of drug related violence not rising in any appreciable way since we went ‘soft on crime’, as they put it. To hear them say it, we’re still a drug ravaged hellhole. if they want to see drugs and ravaging, look at the fucking opiod crisis…but I forget, that’s not a crime epidemic, that’s a health epidemic since the ones suffering the worst of it aren’t fucking brown.

Dallas officials blame computer hacking for setting off emergency sirens throughout the city early Saturday.
Rocky Vaz, director of Dallas’ Office of Emergency Management, said that all 156 of the city’s sirens were activated more than a dozen times.
Officials don’t know who was responsible for the hacking, but Vaz said “with a good deal of confidence that this was someone outside our system” and in the Dallas area.

We took care of wife’s mom for about the last 10 years of her life. She was doing quite well, even swimming 2x a week. Until she fell down the basement stairs and badly broke her shoulder and collarbone. Don’t let elderly people walk around with socks on (unless they have grippy bottoms). Grab bars in shower and toilet.
Valid question:
Will Assad use more chemical weapons? That question requires further questions. Does he have more stockpiles no one knows about? Plausible. How long would it take for him to make another batch for use in a weapons system? Experts would understand the difficulties and time to produce based on the fact Assad remains under sanctions and there’s an ongoing civil war.
Did he acquire the chemical weapons from his benefactor (I suggest this highly unlikely and improbable).
I’ve been watching right wingers like Ari Fleischman try to dump blame on Obama for the fact that Assad still had chemical weapons to use. None of them take any of the aforementioned questions into consideration, or that the only reason Assad decided to use chemical weapons on civilian populations was he got a wink/nod from Trump that regime change wasn’t going to happen.
Moreover, Assad’s killed more than 400,000 in his democide to remain in power. Chemical weapons are a tiny percentage of all the casualties, but those are the ones Trump acted upon with a half-assed ineffectual missile strike. Russia’s laughing all the way to the bank as they know Assad’s gonna be paying for more Russian systems, the conflict could bump the price of oil (helping Russia’s faltering economy, along with those of Iran), and Trump continues to bumble and stumble from one conflict to another with no idea what he’s doing. In fact, his underlings can’t even get on the same page as turmoil continues around Trump. McFarland’s out at NSC and the rest of the incompetents are fighting for primacy and Trump’s ear (whoever whispers last gets their policy heard for the minute).

Nope. Discouraging Democratic voters from voting for Democrats is never a good idea. Private appeals to mayors and district attorneys would have done more good and less harm than providing wavering voters with scenes of Democratic disarray, and encouraging uncertain Republican voters. I’m generally down on the value of any kind of protest other than checking the box next to the (D) on the ballot, because that’s the only one that directly leads to new policy.

Trump’s and Sessions’ view of the world:
Drugs = POC’s.
Unemployment = POCs
Welfare = POCs
Unwed mothers = POCs
Gun violence = POCs
Violent Crime = POCs
And all blacks are unemployed welfare cheats living on welfare, doing drugs, having babies out of wedlock and shooting each other.

Forty years earlier, it was an accepted meme (though later disproven) that then-SoS Dean Acheson had “encouraged” North Korea to invade the South in 1950 by the simple omission of Korea from a speech about Asian defense he had made. Well that, and the drawdown of American forces in SK. Yeah, “the language of diplomacy is difficult”, which is why simpler expressions like “BOOM!!!” are often substituted.

I have been feeling the same, especially since it was clear the bombing accomplished nothing — only destroyed a few aircraft without impeding the Syrians or the Russians at all. But again “small” actions can trigger much larger, potentially catastrophic events, especially in the hands of an ignorant President, who thinks he can run the world like his real estate company.

Well, take it from an ancient geezer one who was there: Nixon may not have baldly stated that he “had a plan to end the war” - secret or otherwise - but he HAD campaigned on a pledge to “end it” (though details were not forthcoming either then or later). Which he did, more or less: even though it took three more years of war, hugely escalated combat, and vast amounts of bloodshed and suffering. By reelection time in 1972, the US’ involvement in Vietnam had been wound down to the point where it was no longer the bleeding cancer in the body politic it had been. Which certainly helped Nixon’s reelection efforts: the Democrats’ nomination of George McGovern as the “antiwar” candidate was seen as an anachronism even at the time: I’m not sure we’ve ever recovered from its effects even four decades on…

That is impossible to do. The only thing racial minorities can do that will not piss off the racist filth of the Republican base is to go off and die somewhere, quietly. Similarly, the only thing non-straight people can do that will not piss off the Republican base is to die.
So fuck them. Political strategy for Democrats cannot be based on trying to make incorrigible bigots and racists happy. They simply need to be outnumbered at the polls.
Edited to add: And to hell with the notion that POC should self-censor their protests to assuage the delicate feelings of white racists. This business of cops killing black people at will is totally unacceptable and should be protested. Any real protest situation is going to be complicated and messy, and the racists and racist-enablers will always find something in the protests that the protestors are supposedly ‘doing wrong’.

There’s a theory that the fear of minorities arises due to the suspicion (conscious it otherwise) that minorities in power will behave in the same discriminatory ways. This generally isn’t true, but somehow it never occurs to people that a way to avoid this being a self-fulfilling prophecy is to avoid being assholes.

Sorry, this looks fishy to me. I may be wrong on this, but isn’t that “G-TRMP” registration number on that helicopter a British, rather than an American registration?
And also: are there really hills that high in Palm Beach?
(Just a guess, this pic was probably taken at one of Trump’s UK properties - Scotland?)
Doesn’t make the ridiculous expenses for Mar-A-Lago “improvements” any better, though.

Might just be a random photo that The Hill used for the tweet.

It’s not a Trump weekend without him golfing.
The only thing that bothers me about Trump’s incessant golfing is the hypocrisy of Trump and the Republicans bitching endlessly and tediously about the times Obama golfed and saying absolutely nothing now.
Other than this exceptionally petty example of IOKIYAR, I approve of Trump’s golfing. Every minute he spends doing that is one less minute he could spend on stealing and wrecking.

OK: that makes it clearer (even if posting a wrong location makes The Hill look sloppy). It sure looks like the same copter, though: still, why the British registration (and how did it get across the Atlantic)? I thought The Donald believed in “buy American”?

The misinformation will be automated.
“….The Role of Botnets in Amplifying Alternative Narratives
These data also provide insight into the effect of automated accounts (botnets) on the data. For example, the most tweeted domain in our data was TheRealStrategy[dot]com. It was tweeted so many times (7436) and connected to so many domains (relative to all other domains) that we had to remove it from the graph. [It was the only highly cited, highly connected media domain we removed.] Examining the temporal patterns (tweets over time) suggests that almost all of the tweets that linked-to this domain were generated by a computer program. That program operated hundreds of different accounts, directing them to tweet out in regular bursts (dozens at the same time). Most often, these tweets linked to TheRealStrategy, but the program also sprinkled in tweets linking to other alternative media domains. Closer analysis revealed many of these Twitter accounts to have similar profile descriptions and to use photos stolen from other people online. This is a very sophisticated botnet that seems to be effectively bringing “real” accounts into its friend/following networks — and primarily propagating conspiracy theories and politicized content.
The InfoWars site was the second-most highly tweeted in our data set (1742 times). Almost all of the tweet activity citing InfoWars came from a coordinated set of accounts — all were similarly named and each sent a single tweet linking to one of two InfoWars articles about different alternative narratives of different shooting events. All of these accounts are now suspended. Though not as sophisticated as TheRealStrategy, this botnet did amplify the content of InfoWars, which was occasionally picked up and retweeted by others.”

well, you know what they say about jazzy ponytails…
My ponytail has gotten so jazzy, I’m considering a trim, for the first time in two years. I asked for a ‘grow-it-out’ haircut, and grow out it has. I should at least tip that woman once a year. I’d trim it myself, like I used to do, but then I might be embarrassed to go back to the pro. I’m in that space where I’d like a neat trim, but don’t want it any shorter. They can do that, right?

re: #317 Shiplord Kirel
This was a bill the our rebub. governor didn’t sign, but allowed to pass into law. If he had vetoed it, the legislature would most likely have been able to overturn. MD currently has the ability to overturn most of Hogan’s vetoes; VA has the ability to currently uphold any of McAuliffe’s vetoes. All is good.
Gov. McAuliffe keeps a perfect veto record
RICHMOND, Va. - Terry McAuliffe not only set a record for the number of bills vetoed by a Virginia governor. He also has a perfect record for the number of vetoes sustained.
Republicans in the General Assembly failed to override any of the 40 vetoes that the Democratic governor issued on bills passed during this year’s legislative session, including measures that sought to increase voting requirements and make it easier to carry concealed weapons.
During his four years in office, McAuliffe has vetoed a total of 111 bills - more than any of his predecessors. None of them have been overturned, Susan Swecker, chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Virginia, noted.

So basically if Va gets a GOP governor they’re fucked.
It’s VA. Keeping the SoVA contingent from getting their anachronistic ideas out of law is important. The lege is a majority repub. there, but not enough to override his vetoes. As to useful stuff, can’t answer. VA is a 4th-dimensional hell hole that I avoid. I just hear stuff on the radio.

re: #264 Brian J.
When translators are incapable of figuring out what Trump’s saying during official meetings, that increases the chances something will get misunderstood, misremembered, or simply not translated properly.
That’d be bad enough in a real estate deal, but it’s downright deadly in international relations where words have serious consequences.
In fact, to take one example - there’s two translations of UN SCR 242 (French and English, and both have equal force under the law).
In one version, the key phrase is “the territories” and in the other “territories”. What does a simple preposition mean?
For the Arabs and Israelis, it’s the difference between a belief that Israel can hold on to some territories captured in 1967, and the belief that Israel must withdraw from all territories captured.
