WATCH LIVE: Trump’s Press Conference With NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg

After Trump’s numerous ignorant and frightening statements about NATO, this should be an interesting press conference.

On the other hand, Secretary Stoltenberg may be too professional to bring up Trump’s idiotic blathering.

Will the media go after this low-hanging fruit? I wish the answer to that could be, “Of course they will! That’s what journalists do!” But we shall see.

Charles Pierce goes down to Alabama to find out what makes evangelicals so forgiving of religious fakers like Trump and former governor Bentley.

“The idea that moral hypocrisy hurts you among evangelical voters is not true, if you’re sound on all of the fundamentals,” said Wayne Flynt, an ordained Baptist minister and one of Alabama’s pre-eminent Geethe fundamentals have become. At this time, what is fundamental is hating liberals, hating Obama, hating abortion and hating same-sex marriage.”

So as we all assumed, being a good evangelical christian is all about hating the right people and things.

No shit, that’s all that ever mattered. Just replace Obama’s name with Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter, keep hating abortion and liberals, and replace same sex marriage with gay rights and you have what has driven the Evangelical machine for 40 years now.

Because you’re not grokking that evangelical is not the same as Evangelical.

The former is about spreading the Good News. The latter is a political organization that started out trying to end-run around desegregation and starting importing more and more elaborate conspiracy theories to create a worldview in which they are the only righteous people (even when they aren’t righteous).

Carter was never their kind.

Here’s another head-banging bit from the Munnee Hunnee interview:

We were going to have a 10 or a 15 minute sit-down. It lasted for three hours. Then the next day, it was another schedule, because everything is very orderly with the Chinese, frankly.

And we had meetings scheduled. Well, the 15 minutes on the first day lasted for three hours. The 15 minutes on the second day lasted for two hours, just one-on-one, the two of us with interpreters.

Who the fuck plans a big international event with two 15-minute meetings as the goal for two days of talks? I guess that’s the extent of the yam’s attention span.

Oh, and what’s with his “we had great chemistry” bullshit—he had “great chemistry” with Obama, then he had “great chemistry” with Abe, and with Mitt Romney (another time it was scheduled for a 10 minute sitdown, but expanded) and now with Xi.

Which is what Reagan and Trump bring to the table as demagogues, by the way.

Reagan did folksy resentment and talking down to anyone that disagreed in that “I don’t need to argue, you’re so dumb and wrong” condescending way and it stuck.

Trump is doing a more aggro version of resentment and condescension.

All parts of the Republican party, even the ones that seem not to mesh, use the same rhetorical structures and tropes, with the ur-premise being that they are a priori both moral and correct, and thus can’t be wrong. As time advances, their distinct religious, economics, and cultural narratives are merging, because the shape matters more than the details.

That ‘graph confused me. Here’s the original from the NYT:

What is most important is determined in the moment, and then the text, the culture, and the ritual can be given new meaning to match that end.

This is what postmodernism was observing—and warning—about the nature of culture. Abstractions are hollow, and can be filled, unfilled, and refilled with something different. Believers can, will, and do deform what they believe over time, and a community of belief can transform “sacred,” “unchangeable” beliefs and not acknowledge the change.

Ukraine really does not like it when people use a “the” in front of its name. Just a guess, but see Charles Pierce’s extracts above. Jimmy Carter’s main “problem” with the Evangelicals was mainly that he was nominally “one of them”, but preferred to focus on the positive aspects of his faith, rather than just making it a matter of who one hated, and how badly. Reagan, despite being a personally irreligious type (as Trump is today) knew the right buzzphrases and catchwords to use to stoke up the hate with the “religious Right”, but also cover it with the right deflective rhetoric.

I think that what Russia actually was aiming for was to smear Hillary and embroil her in more BS “scandals” so as to divide the US even more deeply following what, after all, looked like her near-certain election during most of the campaign. The flukes in the EC turned this nasty little tactic into a strategic goldmine when putin and his merry pranksters got even more division than they could have hoped, along with a president they can manipulate like a marionette.

Yeah, re that: here’s the paragraf from Pierce’s piece re the “church police”:

Lawmakers on Tuesday voted 24-4 to allow Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham to establish a law enforcement department. The church says it needs its own police officers to keep its school as well as its more than 4,000 person congregation safe. Critics of the bill argue that a police department that reports to church officials could be used to cover up crimes. The state has given a few private universities the authority to have a police force, but never a church or non-school entity. Police experts have said such a police department would be unprecedented in the U.S.

“4,000” congregants? OK: so we’re talking real megachurch here: just on the size of it alone, one would assume it might want/need a security force (outside of the usual deacons-on-Sunday sort), but why organized as a “police department”?? And how would that even work?

WASHINGTON—Almost three weeks after canceling a vote on his health-care package over infighting among his fellow Republicans and the opposition of the Democrats, President Donald Trump dug back into the fight on Wednesday, threatening to withhold payments to insurers to force Democrats to the negotiating table.

In an interview in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump said the White House may lack authority to make the payments established under his predecessor to reduce copayments and deductibles for some of the poorest customers who buy insurance under the 2010 Affordable Care Act. Cutting off the payments could trigger turmoil in insurance markets.

“I don’t want people to get hurt,” Mr. Trump said. “What I think should happen—and will happen—is the Democrats will start calling me and negotiating.”

“4,000” congregants? OK: so we’re talking real megachurch here: just on the size of it alone, one would assume it might want/need a security force (outside of the usual deacons-on-Sunday sort), but why organized as a “police department”?? And how would that even work?

Well - I’d say they can have their “police force” given to them by the state (in the form of permission) ONLY if the church starts to pay income and property taxes.

re: #61 Kragar

Taking the “gun church” to the next level? At this point I am not sure that an accountable, state-supervised police department is not the least of several evils. Many politically oriented Evangelical churches, especially in the south, seem hell-bent (so to speak) on turning themselves into fortresses and having an armed presence. In many, this takes the form of hiring private security. This is ok in Texas, where security operators are under fairly tight state police supervision; not so great in Alabama or some other states, where it is much easier to get uniforms and badges and go to work as an armed force. The worst, armed volunteers, are also prevalent and some Houses of Superstition actually encourage certain (white, well-to-do) members to bring their own concealed guns to services. Shooting ranges have joined basketball courts, gyms, and bowling among church-owned amenities in some areas.

I just booked my MIL and her sister some flights to KC at the end of the month…on United. When they asked why I chose United, I told them because they beat their passengers. Their response? “You’re the best son-in-law ever!” Fact is, the prices for first class were good.

Don’t expect the Democrats to negotiate anything. This is politics , not business. Why would you expect the Democrats to bail you out for making such a stupid move?

About this police force able to be formed by a church. Does this include African American churches? I foresee issues much like when Reagan did gun control in CA because of “the blacks getting gunz” in reference to the Black Panthers.

I await the RWNJ to say that the Charleston attack would have been prevented if this were in place then.

The final question I have - who would Jesus shoot in the face?

Imagine the response if/when a mosque applies for its own police force, which they can justify at least as easily as a fundy mega-church. I’ll leave it that.

Better than that, just imagine a Temple of Satan with its own police force. I bet they could come up with some cool uniforms.

re: #88 Belafon

I stopped attending my in-laws’ church with them when visiting because I found out that they do not allow women to vote on any church business — it is a Baptist church in a Houston suburb. We showed up at their house for a weekend visit and my mother-in-law was home alone. When asked where my father-in-law was, she said, “The church is voting on a new Minister of Music, so he went to vote on that.” I asked why she didn’t go with him, since she is MUCH more involved in the church than he is, and she said, “Only the men are allowed to vote.”

I almost fell over. I told my husband I would not go to church their church again. Since I was raised by a single mom, it hit very close to home that my family would have had no representation had we attended a church like that, and it pissed me off to no end. Still does.

Or, you know, since DT’s party controls the f0cking government, they can assemble a majority of their caucuses in both houses and pass whatever legislation they want.

But yeah, OK, DT, Dems need to negotiate with you.

Simple. It’s a way to keep the congregation and those that oppose it (church) under control. Been done before.

FYI for those who have asked:

The origin of the rumor appears to stem from a bit of sloppy Googling by users of a crowd-sourced site called Everipedia, which published erroneous information that then spread across social media and was taken as fact. The site describes itself as “the encyclopedia of everything,” and it functions similarly to Wikipedia, where users contribute the content.

As Dao’s name first began to circulate publicly, users of Everipedia created a page for Dao that identified him as David Thanh Duc Dao, “an American physician based in New Orleans, Louisiana.” To support this identification, users cited links to generic Internet sites that listed the full name of a David Dao who was a doctor in Louisiana — the wrong David Dao.

(Everipedia users would later correct Dao’s page and then identify him with a new name, “David Anh Duy Dao,” “a Vietnamese American physician based in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.” This time, the source was court records related to Dao’s indictment in Kentucky, which listed the correct Dao’s full name.)

But it was too late. Social-media users began identifying the United passenger as “David Thanh Duc Dao,” of Louisiana, which later led other users to point out that this was not the same name listed on Dao’s criminal records in Kentucky.

To be clear: the passenger was indeed Dr. David Anh Duy Dao of Elizabethtown, KY, and all of the breathless conspiracy stuff is nonsense.

Trump doesn’t like people with spines around him, but firing McMaster would make Trump look bad. So he’s hoping that the Taliban will handle that for him. Plus Trump will get to host the most bigly exceptional funeral.
