And early sanity break for you camera buffs: A Big, Dumb Button

My wife Sara and I used to have this running joke leading up to her birthday each year. Each year I’d say “Honey! What would you like for your birthday?”

and she would reply “I’d like a Hasselblad”. Usually with a big smile on her face, in a wink-wink-nudge-nudge kind of way.

Then I’d say “Ha ha, no, seriously, what would you like?” and we’d both laugh and move on to more serious things.

Hasselblad. The 500c/m. Man. That camera. It’s like the Rolls Royce of cameras. It would send shivers down our spines and we’d get all giggly any time we’d talk about it.

Hasselblad. We both wanted one. For me, the Hasselblad 500c/m is the perfect camera. It’s this beautiful, perfect melding of function and art mixed together. It really is a work of art; this little square box and can come all apart and attach to other things to make other types of cameras. If he was a Transformer he’d be the classiest one. He’d probably have a swirly moustache and wear a top hat and speak in an elegant accent.

A really sweet story.

Ratings. The idiots that hired her and Megyn Kelly in an attempt to broaden audience appeal ended up turning off everyone including most advertiser’s key demographic. Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes and Lawrence O’Donnell have been killing it in their timeslots, if NBC is smart they’ll keep those three, sack Chuck Todd and move Chris Matthews up to the early afternoon slot where he can do less damage with his inane know it all interrupting bullshit. Then they should bring back Tamron Hall for the MTP gig and put Joy Reid in Greta’s timeslot.

Car drives into crowd of people outside French mosque

A man has been arrested after trying to ram a car into a crowd of people in front of a mosque in Paris, police have said.

No one was injured in the attack in the Parisian suburb of Cretei.

Police said the man’s motives for the attack were unclear at the moment, but added that he had not succeeded in driving into the crowd because of barriers placed around the mosque.

According to Le Parisien newspaper, the man said he had wanted to avenge attacks linked to Islamic State that have killed dozens in Paris over the past few years.

Last week, a British man was charged with with terrorism-related murder and attempted murder after allegedly driving a rented van into a crowd of Muslims leaving Finsbury Park mosque on the night of June 19.

I could see Pence, Mattis, Price, Chao, Perry, and Kelly signing off if they got the nod from Ryan and McConnell (hell, Mattis and Kelly might do it just because). Maybe through in Purdue and Zenkie. That’s 8, best case scenario. I think Sessions goes down with the ship and the rest are too deep in Trump’s pocket to make the move.

And here’s the rub, let’s say they get 9 signatures. Trump sends a letter saying he’s fine and then before the Cabinet can send the second letter saying he’s not fine, he fires the 8 cabinet officials who signed the letter (he can’t fire Pence). That’s a straight constitutional crisis the likes of which we haven’t seen before.

The 25th isn’t getting invoked unless there’s a majority of the VP and cabinet (and I can’t tell from the wording if that means just any 9 out of the 16 or if it’s the VP and then 8 out of the 15 cabinet members). And it would be Pence becoming Acting President not Mattis or Kelly, so I don’t think there’s anyway a reasonable person could label it a military coup. This wouldn’t be a situation where the SEALS and Rangers are raiding the White House with tanks rolling down Pennsylvania Ave.

There most definitely is such thing as an Acting President. When GW Bush went under the knife and sent a letter to Congress, Cheney was, for about a day the Acting President.

It’s an interesting question, though, because in serving as Acting President, the VP would be fulfilling his duties as Vice President. It’s not a situation where the President is removed, dies, or resigns; the President, under Section 3 or 4 of the 25th Amendment is still technically the President. The way Section 4 is written, it opens the door for Congress to determine the President can return to office at some future date. I don’t think the Courts would address it under the political question doctrine, so it might be left to some very arcane Senate rule.

At the nadir of the Bush presidency some time during his second term, I thought America’s global image couldn’t have taken much more of a battering. I was wrong. Trump has done even more to debase America’s global brand than Bush ever had, without even starting a war (yet). In a globalized world, much of America’s strength rests in strong diplomatic relations with dozens of key countries in strategic areas. It is strong alliances that enables the US to project its influence, and these allies are also a defensive perimeter that another power cannot easily breach.

As confirmed by #17, countries from Germany, Japan and Australia are now openly questioning whether they can ever trust the US again. Bush raised question marks. Lightning doesn’t strike twice. Trump is confirmation to America’s allies that they are dealing with a very different America than the one which existed during the Cold War. Germany and Australia are certainly hedging their bets by building up relations with China. Not long ago, this was totally unthinkable.

A human lifetime is long enough to see global shifts in power. While I don’t doubt that the clear trajectory of the 21st century (and one that cannot be stopped) is towards a multi-polar world, with Europe, China and India all being key global players, America’s relative decline so far is mostly due to its own making. Maybe that’s a common theme to how Great Powers usually fall…too powerful to be taken down by anyone on the outside, they fall victims of their own making.

The other night I posted about fliers being posted in bars, etc. about fundraisers for people that are sick and don’t health insurance. I just saw this on Facebook for someone I went to high school with. This is in Montgomery County in Texas.

Since October 2015, we have been hit really hard with medical expenses. They are growing by leaps and bounds. The biggest hurdle right now is the mortgage. Because we have to pay for medical expenses before the doctors will see us, we’ve had to pull from our mortgage account. If we do not raise $1900 by this Friday, June 30th, our home will go into foreclosure. Any and all help would be appreciated.

I am still looking at 3 more surgeries. One is for a hernia that developed during recovery of one of my back surgeries. The second is a shoulder replacement and the third is an internal stimulator to help with the pain from my back down my right leg and groin. All treatment has been placed on hold.

Medicare for all.

I am having to modify some Perl code, and I’m quickly realizing why I never bothered to learn the language. But, since I am having to modify existing code, I need some help with a question of anyone who can help:

I added the “use strict;” because I believe any code should be as tight as possible. But that is giving me the following error: “Can’t use string (“second”) as a HASH ref while “strict refs” in use at simple.pl line 7.” Any idea how to clear this message?

While the code isn’t exactly like this, it’s close enough. The less rearranging the better. The real code has two different hash maps, and uses the names in one to map to a collection of methods to run in the other.

Edit: Line 7 is the foreach.

Here’s the problem with the 25th Amendment approach - you need a majority of the Cabinet and the VP to trigger it. That means you need 9 of these 16 people to sign off on having Trump temporarily removed:

Pence, Tillerson, Mnuchin, Mattis, Session, Zenkie, Purdue, Ross, Acosta, Price, Chao, Perry, DeVos, Shulkin, and Kelly.

I could see Pence, Mattis, Price, Chao, Perry, and Kelly signing off if they got the nod from Ryan and McConnell (hell, Mattis and Kelly might do it just because). Maybe through in Purdue and Zenkie. That’s 8, best case scenario. I think Sessions goes down with the ship and the rest are too deep in Trump’s pocket to make the move.

And here’s the rub, let’s say they get 9 signatures. Trump sends a letter saying he’s fine and then before the Cabinet can send the second letter saying he’s not fine, he fires the 8 cabinet officials who signed the letter (he can’t fire Pence). That’s a straight constitutional crisis the likes of which we haven’t seen before.

If only he’d done something terrible while in office that would warrant impeachment proceedings, like oral sex or something.

Yeah, it was sketchy to begin with, but that really just did it for me. I was like, you cannot tell me they have anything aboveboard in mind with that request. We all know they’re going to use it to hunt down the Dear Leader’s political enemies.

Time is running out for the resigning on medical grounds IMO. Maybe this behavior is probably a setup to resigning, but I don’t think it’s in Trump’s DNA to leave such an office under those means.

I’m in agreement with Keith Olbermann… that Trump literally feels he can do no wrong, while he’s self-destructing in front of all of us. He may have to be publicly arrested and taken out of office… and that’s if he doesn’t pull a Budd Dwyer in front of the cameras first.

It’s a dangerous, frightening situation. But of course e-mails and all that.
