Just Another Vile Misogynistic Rant From Our So-Called President

This kind of disgusting behavior from Trump isn’t shocking. It’s who he is.
Politics • Views: 38,680

These are the tweets defended today by White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders as “fighting fire with fire.”

No one should be shocked at this any more. The time for that was 18 months ago during the campaign, because Trump showed the world his true colors right from the start. He’s not going to change.

And early sanity break for you camera buffs: A Big, Dumb Button

My wife Sara and I used to have this running joke leading up to her birthday each year. Each year I’d say “Honey! What would you like for your birthday?”

and she would reply “I’d like a Hasselblad”. Usually with a big smile on her face, in a wink-wink-nudge-nudge kind of way.

Then I’d say “Ha ha, no, seriously, what would you like?” and we’d both laugh and move on to more serious things.

Hasselblad. The 500c/m. Man. That camera. It’s like the Rolls Royce of cameras. It would send shivers down our spines and we’d get all giggly any time we’d talk about it.

Hasselblad. We both wanted one. For me, the Hasselblad 500c/m is the perfect camera. It’s this beautiful, perfect melding of function and art mixed together. It really is a work of art; this little square box and can come all apart and attach to other things to make other types of cameras. If he was a Transformer he’d be the classiest one. He’d probably have a swirly moustache and wear a top hat and speak in an elegant accent.

A really sweet story.

Ratings. The idiots that hired her and Megyn Kelly in an attempt to broaden audience appeal ended up turning off everyone including most advertiser’s key demographic. Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes and Lawrence O’Donnell have been killing it in their timeslots, if NBC is smart they’ll keep those three, sack Chuck Todd and move Chris Matthews up to the early afternoon slot where he can do less damage with his inane know it all interrupting bullshit. Then they should bring back Tamron Hall for the MTP gig and put Joy Reid in Greta’s timeslot.

Car drives into crowd of people outside French mosque

A man has been arrested after trying to ram a car into a crowd of people in front of a mosque in Paris, police have said.

No one was injured in the attack in the Parisian suburb of Cretei.

Police said the man’s motives for the attack were unclear at the moment, but added that he had not succeeded in driving into the crowd because of barriers placed around the mosque.

According to Le Parisien newspaper, the man said he had wanted to avenge attacks linked to Islamic State that have killed dozens in Paris over the past few years.

Last week, a British man was charged with with terrorism-related murder and attempted murder after allegedly driving a rented van into a crowd of Muslims leaving Finsbury Park mosque on the night of June 19.

Here’s the problem with the 25th Amendment approach - you need a majority of the Cabinet and the VP to trigger it. That means you need 9 of these 16 people to sign off on having Trump temporarily removed:

Pence, Tillerson, Mnuchin, Mattis, Session, Zenkie, Purdue, Ross, Acosta, Price, Chao, Perry, DeVos, Shulkin, and Kelly.

I could see Pence, Mattis, Price, Chao, Perry, and Kelly signing off if they got the nod from Ryan and McConnell (hell, Mattis and Kelly might do it just because). Maybe through in Purdue and Zenkie. That’s 8, best case scenario. I think Sessions goes down with the ship and the rest are too deep in Trump’s pocket to make the move.

And here’s the rub, let’s say they get 9 signatures. Trump sends a letter saying he’s fine and then before the Cabinet can send the second letter saying he’s not fine, he fires the 8 cabinet officials who signed the letter (he can’t fire Pence). That’s a straight constitutional crisis the likes of which we haven’t seen before.

Mattis is a serving Marine Corps General, Kelly a retired one, they will be incredibly reluctant to invoke the 25th for fear of it being labeled as a military led coup.

This is some West Wing/House of Cards crazy, but… I wonder if Pence could get Sessions on board by promising to nominate him for a judgeship (knowing that the GOP majority in the Senate would probably back him). And how many would not sign on for fear of Pence sacking them once he became Acting President.

Also, here’s another interesting angle, what happens if Pence is serving as Acting President and there’s a tie vote in the Senate, can he still cast the tie breaking vote?

The 25th isn’t getting invoked unless there’s a majority of the VP and cabinet (and I can’t tell from the wording if that means just any 9 out of the 16 or if it’s the VP and then 8 out of the 15 cabinet members). And it would be Pence becoming Acting President not Mattis or Kelly, so I don’t think there’s anyway a reasonable person could label it a military coup. This wouldn’t be a situation where the SEALS and Rangers are raiding the White House with tanks rolling down Pennsylvania Ave.

Right, but technically, Pence would still be VP and just Acting President. Even if the Congressional vote came down that Trump wasn’t capable of carrying out his duties, the Amendment says the VP carries on as Acting President. That’s different than saying the VP assumes the office of president.

There is no such thing as “acting president.”

Section 4 of the 25th Amendment:

Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

There most definitely is such thing as an Acting President. When GW Bush went under the knife and sent a letter to Congress, Cheney was, for about a day the Acting President.

It’s an interesting question, though, because in serving as Acting President, the VP would be fulfilling his duties as Vice President. It’s not a situation where the President is removed, dies, or resigns; the President, under Section 3 or 4 of the 25th Amendment is still technically the President. The way Section 4 is written, it opens the door for Congress to determine the President can return to office at some future date. I don’t think the Courts would address it under the political question doctrine, so it might be left to some very arcane Senate rule.

At the nadir of the Bush presidency some time during his second term, I thought America’s global image couldn’t have taken much more of a battering. I was wrong. Trump has done even more to debase America’s global brand than Bush ever had, without even starting a war (yet). In a globalized world, much of America’s strength rests in strong diplomatic relations with dozens of key countries in strategic areas. It is strong alliances that enables the US to project its influence, and these allies are also a defensive perimeter that another power cannot easily breach.

As confirmed by #17, countries from Germany, Japan and Australia are now openly questioning whether they can ever trust the US again. Bush raised question marks. Lightning doesn’t strike twice. Trump is confirmation to America’s allies that they are dealing with a very different America than the one which existed during the Cold War. Germany and Australia are certainly hedging their bets by building up relations with China. Not long ago, this was totally unthinkable.

A human lifetime is long enough to see global shifts in power. While I don’t doubt that the clear trajectory of the 21st century (and one that cannot be stopped) is towards a multi-polar world, with Europe, China and India all being key global players, America’s relative decline so far is mostly due to its own making. Maybe that’s a common theme to how Great Powers usually fall…too powerful to be taken down by anyone on the outside, they fall victims of their own making.

They could, in theory do that. But as it stands now, there is nothing I see in the US Code that addresses this. And to pass a law designating some other body would be incredibly controversial, the sort of thing that no member of Congress would want to have their name attached to come the following election - especially if it was as blatant as your suggestion.

Good letter, great content. So California has refused and I thought one other state so far, but can’t remember which.

And if having Pence and Kobach isn’t bad enough:

Also named to the commission was former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell

I’ve long said to keep an eye on where Ken Blackwell (and Jim DeMint, but I digress) are and know that shady dealings, creepy actions and trouble will follow.

Trump has been good for MSNBC. Before Trump ran for office, the cable channel was languishing.

This is why Comcast, who owns Chuck Todd Inc., doesn’t really want Trump to go away.

Besides of course being able to manipulate the FCC in their favor.

Yeah, but those were merely attacks on the country/its democracy/electoral integrity, etc: they weren’t the important sort of attacks; the ones that really count. I.e., making fun of Donald Trump personally.

I like most of us don’t like a lot of Joes politics and I have yelled at him on the box a time or 2. This will solidify a lot of things. Where it goes from here????

IMO that it will take a long time to fix the damage already done.

Joe lies about what he said during the campaign, pretending he was always against trump. He also continues to do the “both sides” by adding in an attack on Hillary during his rants against Trump. He knows being anti trump is keeping his ratings up - that is why he does it.

Related, on a more reasearch-y note, LiveScience picked up on a paper published earlier this month:

Quitting Religion? Mom and Dad Would Prefer a Slow Fade

A slow fade from religious life may be less disruptive to your relationship with mom and dad than rejecting or changing religions altogether, a new study finds.

[…]

Previous studies have found that families that share a faith between generations tend to be tighter-knit than those who don’t, meaning that religious shifts between the generations could predict how close families are likely to be.

[…]

The paper:

Parent-Adult Child Religious Discordance: Consequences for Intergenerational Solidarity Across Several Decades

This article focused on the relationship between parent-child religious discordance (affiliation, intensity, and attendance) in early adulthood and children’s perceived affectual and associational solidarity with their parents across 20 years. The data derived from eight waves of the Longitudinal Study of Generations between 1971 and 2005. We selected 635 young adult children whose mothers and/or fathers also reported their religious orientations in 1971 and then constructed mother-child dyads (n = 584) and father-child dyads (n = 475). Results showed that religious affiliation discordance between parents and children negatively and consistently lowered children’s affectual and associational solidarity with parents over several decades regardless of parents’ gender. However, intergenerational discordance in religious intensity and religious attendance showed no such association. These findings indicate that discontinuity in denominational identification is more disruptive to intergenerational relations than discontinuity in religious strength and practice.

In other words, changing the label is more disruptive than simply fading to quiet.

This gets back to the classic us-vs-them dynamic that is so essential in groups.

The other night I posted about fliers being posted in bars, etc. about fundraisers for people that are sick and don’t health insurance. I just saw this on Facebook for someone I went to high school with. This is in Montgomery County in Texas.

Since October 2015, we have been hit really hard with medical expenses. They are growing by leaps and bounds. The biggest hurdle right now is the mortgage. Because we have to pay for medical expenses before the doctors will see us, we’ve had to pull from our mortgage account. If we do not raise $1900 by this Friday, June 30th, our home will go into foreclosure. Any and all help would be appreciated.

I am still looking at 3 more surgeries. One is for a hernia that developed during recovery of one of my back surgeries. The second is a shoulder replacement and the third is an internal stimulator to help with the pain from my back down my right leg and groin. All treatment has been placed on hold.

Medicare for all.

Illinois has a Republican governor but I doubt our legislature would let him get away with this. Too bad Michigan and Wisconsin will likely agree; they so want to disenfranchise the poor and minorities.

While we were talking about Trump, Joe and Mika today, The Republican-control House passed two horrible immigration bills. One is to cut off fundings to so-called “sanctuary cities” and the other increases penalties to previously deported immigrants to 25 years in federal prison.

ALTERNATIVE FACTS.

White American Jesus founded this country back in the Biblical days. In 1492, Christopher Columbus came over, gave all the brown people smallpox, and then the Pilgrims came over and smote the rest with the power of God and turned it back into the Christian powerhouse it was meant to be. And they all lived happily ever after and LA LA LA I CAN’T HEAR YOU THERE ARE NO IMMIGRANTS.

I am having to modify some Perl code, and I’m quickly realizing why I never bothered to learn the language. But, since I am having to modify existing code, I need some help with a question of anyone who can help:

[hidden]
This is the basic structure:

use strict;

sub printit
{
my ($sh) = @_;

foreach my $v( keys %$sh )
{
print $v;
}
}

sub main
{
my %simplehash = (
first => [ 1, 2 ],
second => [ 3, 4 ]
);

printit( %simplehash );
}

main();

I added the “use strict;” because I believe any code should be as tight as possible. But that is giving me the following error: “Can’t use string (“second”) as a HASH ref while “strict refs” in use at simple.pl line 7.” Any idea how to clear this message?

While the code isn’t exactly like this, it’s close enough. The less rearranging the better. The real code has two different hash maps, and uses the names in one to map to a collection of methods to run in the other.

Edit: Line 7 is the foreach.

[/hidden]

Edit: Charles, I think I broke your hide functionality. It seems you didn’t build a Perl grammar parser in it. :)

re: #39 KGxvi

If only he’d done something terrible while in office that would warrant impeachment proceedings, like oral sex or something.

Exactly why I still honestly believe it will come to jail for Trump. If it comes to that he can die there, be interred there as a permanent warning.

Yeah, it was sketchy to begin with, but that really just did it for me. I was like, you cannot tell me they have anything aboveboard in mind with that request. We all know they’re going to use it to hunt down the Dear Leader’s political enemies.

That’s really unfortunate. I’ve hit a big wall with my Irish ancestors.

I hit a wall with one Walter Smith who probably emigrated from somewhere in England.
You wouldn’t think he’d be hard to find, would you?

Will add to my list—up to 4 now.

Edit to add—I like her last line—a lot.

Which is good. Having several states out front on this will make it easier for others not to comply with the request. It should die of its own weight in no time.

Krugman seems to think Trump is having a breakdown, and that may be correct. If so, it’s because he knows what’s coming. I still think he’ll weasel out of jail by resigning on medical grounds and getting pardoned; and bankruptcy is almost better than jail. Ignominy, that’s what I want. I am a bad person but he’s worse.

Everyone underestimates the degree to which Trump has surrounded himself with insulating sycophants. I’m sorry but if the last two years have taught me anything it’s not to get too hopeful about anything with the possible exception of Nvidia stock.

I once overheard this statement in a record store here in Toronto.

Gee! Did you know Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?

It was one of those moments where you could hear the needle scratch across the record in the soundtrack of life.

Probably too long for a slogan, but “Trumpcare, it’s like Trump university except you die, the girl dies, everybody dies” is entertaining.

Epic traffic out there. Thanks to fires on the coast to valley routes, (Topanga, PCH, and now in Calabasas) well my wife left Brentwood at 4:30. Still not home. 3 hours from Brentwood to Universal City. Half tank of gas. That 405…. Twenty miles maybe.

When I bought a 50th anniversary vinyl reissue of Sgt. Pepper, the young clerk at Barnes & Noble looked at the cover and called it ‘Pepper’s Club Band’. Same feeling.

Time is running out for the resigning on medical grounds IMO. Maybe this behavior is probably a setup to resigning, but I don’t think it’s in Trump’s DNA to leave such an office under those means.

I’m in agreement with Keith Olbermann… that Trump literally feels he can do no wrong, while he’s self-destructing in front of all of us. He may have to be publicly arrested and taken out of office… and that’s if he doesn’t pull a Budd Dwyer in front of the cameras first.

It’s a dangerous, frightening situation. But of course e-mails and all that.

Not sure if this one’s posted yet (on my list)

PRESIDENT TRUMP’S COMMISSION to investigate allegations of voter fraud is reaching out to state officials to gather information, but they won’t be getting a lot of help from Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin.
