The “serious” wingnut defense of Trump has been “This is aimed towards China, to get them to do something about North Korea.”
Well Beijing spoke up today…and the result was Donny Two Scoop’s further emasculation:
Beijing put down its DPRK marker today. If Trump keeps crazy-tweeting at Pyongyang we could easily wind up in WW3. https://t.co/mJ0xBHLOrr
— John Schindler (@20committee) August 11, 2017
Indeed, China just publicly said as much. Today’s Global Times, an influential state-run Beijing daily, ran an editorial with the memorable title “Reckless game over the Korean Peninsula runs risk of real war.” It minced no words and made two highly significant statements.
First, noting that “Neither Washington nor Pyongyang really wants war, but a war could break out anyway,” it made Beijing’s position crystal clear: “If North Korea launches missiles that threaten U.S. soil first and the U.S. retaliates, China will stay neutral.” However, the editorial stated, “If the U.S. and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow the North Korean regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so.”
In other words, any preemptively aggressive moves by Trump against North Korea will be regarded as casus belli in Beijing, whose contempt for our president is something China’s not hiding any longer. Indeed, another editorial in today’s Global Times mocked him: “Trump is good at bluffing, but he is just a paper tiger,” citing the infamous phrase used by Chairman Mao at the height of the Cold War to throw stones at the United States.
At this point, there’s no real way to extricate ourselves from this in a fashion that will avoid a loss of face.

Ayep, China is establishing itself as the power broker in the region. It has enough of an economic stranglehold on us that we cannot afford to go to war with them, even if we might win without a nuclear exchange.

They aren’t concerned about that because Trump is president, and that means they can let their racist, homophobic, Islamophobic, anti-immigrant, etc. flags fly in public. They know Trump will not say anything against anything they do/say because they are an essential segment of his base. To my knowledge, The Talking Yam has yet to issue an official WH statement about the mosque bombing in Minnesota, but he wasted no time tweeting about the vehicle plowing into the soldiers in Paris a few days ago.

Fairly close to the end from what I understand. Shatner, at the time, expresses what seemed to be genuine grief at not making amends. But his history with the rest of the cast is poor at the very best and that aspects of his life has been true for decades.

Yeah, a lot of the animosity towards Shatner has been bubbling since the original series was filming. Hollywood back in the day (and some would argue still today) was big on the idea that the lead actor was the center of the production and everything revolved around them. Which led to a lot of friction between Shatner and the rest of the cast because he felt as Kirk was the captain he should be the chief problem solver. This caused a particular flare-up with Nimoy because Shatner felt that Spock was making Kirk look dumb by being the chief problem-solver.

The current nazis have at least started on a better look, though they still have a long way to go to meet Heydrich-level standards. They haven’t even begun to match their predecessors in discipline and hardiness, though, and even then the originals lost the war.

The important thing to remember is that the Germans couldn’t have won WWII because they didn’t have enough resources and couldn’t steal enough to cover the shortfall. See “The Wages of Destruction” by Tooze for details. No matter how strong or crazy they were, the Soviet Union and the US were going to steamroller them; the only question was how many would die in the process.
The modern white supremacy movement is actually closer to the Chile or Argentina situations where the authoritarian government uses them to suppress opposition with the force of “law” behind it. The police helping the white supremacists is a very bad warning sign. The only long term hope is that the billionaires decide profitably is more important than oppression but the case of Chile under Pinochet puts the lie to that fantasy.

The best the Third Reich could have ever hoped for was to fight the Allies to a stand-still or sue for peace at a point early enough in the war that they could keep their gains. Really, after 1941 and Barbarossa, the question was not if the Reich would lose the war but rather when.

Given the civil service laws and regulations, it would be very difficult. Probably the easiest way would be to shut the agency (allowing all employees to be laid off) and then creating a new agency with strict hiring standards.

You know, thinking about it, it seems to me a lot of this started in the late 1990’s (IIRC….it might’ve been the early 2000’s) when demographic projections indicated that whites would become a minority by 2030 or something like.

Awww. :(
if i were president, my temptation in dealing with North Korea would simply be to troll the hell out of them. For instance, I might find several million volunteers here and abroad, and have them just swarm across the border into North Korea, claiming refugee status. Have them state that things really are as bad in America as the North Koreans claim it to be, and that these millions of people are there to work hard, being primarily interested in farming and manual labor. Just keep pushing people playing refugees into the country, but of course everybody has to play it straight-faced. I would have to make announcements to a national audience about how these people were all traitors and they would be killed if they attempted to return to the United States. The entire North Korea system would collapse.
The other idea is just to start referring to North Korea as North Korealina, and to begin treating them as a state. To create a whole fake literature about North Korealina being an original colony. Keep sending them actual Republican state legislators to oversee things. Maybe we could package them in with the millions of fake refugees.
Good morning! The hummers are lining up for breakfast.

Imo that’s the right setting. The 7.1 aperture gave you extra depth of field, well worth keeping given a few of them right there. Lower ISO and it would have opened up the lens and gotten shallow. Noise is getting easier to tame well. But here’s the thing - identity politics aren’t ‘zero sum’. They’re about undoing centuries of negative identity politics, in which whatever wasn’t white, Christian, straight, and male was kept down, pushed away from power, marginalized, silenced, forced underground.
“Unifying visions of the common good” usually means telling these folks that they need to sit down and shut up and accept their second class status, just a little longer. But don’t worry. We’ll get to you in a bit. Promise!

In light of the brownshirts marching today in Charlottesville:
Sebastian Gorka, the West Wing’s Phony Foreign-Policy Guru
Gorka’s a former Breitbart editor with Islamophobic views and ties to neo-Nazi extremists - and he has the ear of the president
“…Gorka’s thesis proposed a dramatic restructuring of the national-security apparatus to create a police state. He suggests a radical reform of “internal barriers between the police force, the army and various intelligence services.” This could also be seen as the start of a Gestapo-like, all-powerful national system of repression. “That’s about as Nazi Germany- or Soviet Union-like a proposal as I’ve ever heard,” says Patrick Eddington of the conservative Cato Institute. “The net effect would be to suspend the Bill of Rights, if his proposal ever saw the light of day.”

Bravely bold Richard Spencer
Rode forth from Montana.
He was not afraid to die,
Oh brave RIchard Spencer.
He was not at all afraid
To be killed in nasty ways.
Brave, brave, brave, brave Richard Spencer
He was not in the least bit scared
To be mashed into a pulp.
Or to have his eyes gouged out,
And his elbows broken.
To have his kneecaps split
And his body burned away,
And his limbs all hacked and mangled
Brave Sir Richard Spencer
His head smashed in
And his heart cut out
And his liver removed
And his bowls unplugged
And his nostrils raped
And his bottom burnt off
And his penis
“That’s, that’s enough music for now lads, there’s dirty work afoot.”
Brave Richard Spencer ran away.
(“No!”)
Bravely ran away away.
(“I didn’t!”)
When danger reared it’s ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
(“I never!”)
Yes, brave Richard Spencer turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
(“You’re lying!”)
Swiftly taking to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.

One of my flaws is I sometimes fail to see the character in someone until I’ve been burned. I think we all suffer from a bit of that. Someone a long time ago told me if I knew who a person truly was, I would never be disappointed in them. Truth. Still, I fail.
