And Now, Donald Trump Is Threatening Military Action Against Venezuela

Politics • Views: 29,414

Well, folks, as a finale to one of the craziest weeks yet for the Trump Horror, today he actually threatened to use military force in … Venezuela.

Man, did we ever dodge a bullet by not electing that war-monger Hillary Clinton.

UPDATE at 8/11/17 5:03:36 pm by Charles Johnson

And here’s a probable reason why Trump is suddenly so belligerent toward Venezuela:

Repeat from upstairs: Remember how the Argentinian government, facing a domestic crisis, tried to use an invasion of the Falklands to distract from and overcome their own failures?

And what it led to?

We are truly degenerating into a tinhorn third-world laughingstock of a nation…

The Bernie Bros and sisters are coming to Republicans’ rescue

Things could go well for the Democrats in next year’s midterm elections — if they don’t Bern out.

President Trump is woefully unpopular, feuding with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and other Republicans. The GOP can’t manage to repeal Obamacare or do much of anything. Voters say they’d like Democrats to run Congress.

But here come the Bernie Bros and sisters to the Republicans’ rescue: They’re sowing division in the Democratic Party and attempting to enact a purge of the ideologically impure — just the sort of thing that made the Republican Party the ungovernable mess it is today.

The difference is the DNC is reacting in exactly the opposite way to how the GOP handled the Tea Party: Rather than embracing the Bros and presenting them as “true Americans,” the DNC is not only telling the Bros to go to Hell, they’re giving them directions on how to get there.

The Bernie Bros and sisters are coming to Republicans’ rescue

It gets worse. Our Revolution’s 16-31 record in the article is a lie.

The scoreboard referenced in the article counts Democratic primary wins- even unopposed Democratic primaries- as wins even though the general election hasn’t happened yet.

CA-34? Counted as a win because of OR’s last-minute endorsement of Jimmy Gomez, the prohibitive favorite, after the three candidates OR groups endorsed all failed to make the runoff. (Jon Ossoff? Our Revolution has never heard of him despite another last-minute endorsement, which was likely the straw that broke the camel’s back.)

Kim Ellis was defeated in her run for CA Democratic Party Chair, but she is still listed as an upcoming candidate even though she lost nearly three months ago.

A winning candidate for the Portland, OR school board is listed as the “Oregon School Board” candidate to inflate her importance. Similarly, Gil Cedillo is listed as “California 1st” when he was running for the LA City Council.

Shall I go on?

The public martial swaggering is being noted by diplomatic and intelligence agencies worldwide.

Because the disconnects—Trump’s “version” of what’s going on with the nuclear versus what verifiably is, Trump’s vague red lines that other admin officials try to walk back—is on one hand deeply worrisome, but on the other an opening.

Passenger airline travelling from Denver to Pierre made an emergency landing in Scottsbluff yesterday after an engine failure.

No one was injured. The airport manager bought pizza for everyone on the plane.

The airline was left with a problem though: It is an airline’s responsibility to put up passengers in hotels and such. The airline called around to more than fifty hotels and motels in the area and could find only three rooms (due to the upcoming eclipse).

Most of the passengers opted to get rental cars and drive the three hundred miles from Scottsbluff to Pierre.

Both Wyoming and Nebraska have put road restrictions on prohibiting overheight, overweight, and overlong vehicles for the week before and after the eclipse.

That includes RVs. A lot of people are going to be disappointed when their RV is turned away at the state lines.

Even out here in the middle of nowhere, the spot in town they normally use during livestock hauling season for vehicle scales has been turned into a full temporary inspection station. (They aren’t going to stop vehicles just at the state lines.)

Fortunately, I have a front row seat here (the welding goggles came in the mail today), so all I have to do is sit in the backyard.

Well, it might not be ungovernable, but the overwhelming majority of nations who suffer a military coup take a long time (if ever) to return to things like civil rights and democratic norms.

We don’t want a military coup. This needs to be solved through our civil institutions.

I can’t even take a nap without Donald Trump being a jackass.

Threatening to intervene in Venezuela is stupid. Every other country in South America thinks Maduro is awful and destabilizing. But every.single.one of them will rally around Venezuela’s right to self-determination if Trump were to militarily intervene.

We get this nonsense because we have an incurious, idiot president who has no sense of history and not enough gumption to look up Venezuela on Wikipedia and maybe see why this is a really bad idea.

I’m personally of the opinion that US intervention into Venezuela would be far more destabilizing to South America and the world than letting the other countries in South America deal with Maduro. Colombia and Brasil have a vested interest in keeping things calm; they don’t need thousands of refugees streaming over their borders with Venezuela.

The US would be ungovernable after a real military coup, although that may not be as big of a deal as it sounds, since we are 95% of the way to being ungovernable just because Republicans are what they are.

At the moment my favorite fan fiction scenario is one where Ryan and McConnell get midnight visits from very serious people who order them to impeach tr*mp via normal Congressional processes or else face having to do it at gunpoint.

To be quite honest, given the current state of the US media, I consider the US to be ungovernable now.

Over 50% of the governing bodies in the US are composed of people who have watched FOX for a significant part of their adult lives. Many of them are true believers. They have no principles other than the demonisation of other Americans and the destruction of the US state. Installing anyone who does not have significant autocratic and racist beliefs as a head of state has resulted and will continue to result in the complete shutdown of any legislative and judicial action as these governing bodies and people refuse to participate in democratic government.

Removing Trump does not fix this. Without significant cultural shift, America is ungovernable. A plutocratic quasi-anarchy held together only by the fact that it is wealthy enough that most citizens don’t starve.

The “serious” wingnut defense for Trump’s empty threats seems to be that this is all some elaborate strategy aimed at getting China to yank Lil’ Kim’s chain. Thing is, in order to argue that Trump is “better” than Obama, they’re left trying to characterize this as a sign of “strength,” as opposed to being “weak” by…you know…engaging in diplomacy to get China to yank Kim’s chain.

From the Andrea Tantaros article above:

Tantaros allegedly did not want to negotiate a deal with Krechmer’s agent because she “feared” it would “cause her editor to discover that she was not writing the book herself” and the book’s publisher, Harper Collins, “would cancel the book if they discovered that there were any negative issues in the writing process, particularly since she was already running more than two years behind schedule.”

As a wag at Wonkette put it, couldn’t she just put a bunch of Chick Tracts and Phyllis Schafley books in a blender and hit “puree.” Two years behind?

I guess being famous has its perks (like missing deadlines by two years).

An Open Letter to the Time Traveler who keeps making President Trump look like a Liar

Dear Time Traveler,

I know you are out there. And I know what you are doing.

It hardly seems a day goes by now that I don’t witness an example of your machinations. President Trump will make a great speech or grace the nation with one of his witty tweets, and within an hour the locusts of the media are all over him. They’ll smugly rant about how what the president said wasn’t true, about how the Paris Agreement doesn’t actually prevent the US from building coal plants or that more people gained insurance under Obamacare than lost it.

Some look at these reports and say they are proof that President Trump is a serial liar. To those that have been brainwashed by fake news and liberal propaganda and events that they’ve seen with their own eyes, things like falsehoods regarding the size of the crowd at the presidential inauguration or baseless claims about fraudulent voters, show that our president has some sort of aversion to telling the truth.

But I know the truth. Someone is going back in time and changing events, thus making President Trump’s statements false. And that someone is you.

A pretty good essay explaining why they shouldn’t get the same “tolerance” and “free speech rights” as decent people:
extranewsfeed.com

Tolerance is not a moral absolute; it is a peace treaty. Tolerance is a social norm because it allows different people to live side-by-side without being at each other’s throats. It means that we accept that people may be different from us, in their customs, in their behavior, in their dress, in their sex lives, and that if this doesn’t directly affect our lives, it is none of our business. But the model of a peace treaty differs from the model of a moral precept in one simple way: the protection of a peace treaty only extends to those willing to abide by its terms. It is an agreement to live in peace, not an agreement to be peaceful no matter the conduct of others. A peace treaty is not a suicide pact.

(snip)

Unlike absolute moral precepts, treaties have remedies for breach. If one side has breached another’s rights, the injured party is no longer bound to respect the treaty rights of their assailant — and their response is not an identical violation of the rules, even if it looks superficially similar to the original breach. “Mommy, Timmy hit me back!” holds no more ethical weight among adults than it does among children.

I read this a few hours ago, and all I could think of, after ‘madness’ was….why shouldn’t other countries then seek a nuclear deterrent against the US? It is the right of every country to defend themselves against foreign invasion, irrespective of whether I liked their government or not. I don’t need to be told that the governments of North Korea and Venezuela are horrific. I also don’t need to be told that nuclear proliferation is ultimately destabilizing, and bad. But when the leaders of the world’s only hyperpower starts acting in such manner that it thinks it can invade other countries at will, seek ‘regime change’ against any governments it doesn’t like, what is the rest of the world supposed to do? If these threats today will lead to widespread nuclear proliferation, the ‘neo-cons’ in Washington has to bear much of the blame.

On a more pleasant note, I had a really good vacation in Vancouver visiting my son & daughter-in-law. Did a lot of walking up & down hills, with even more stopping & sitting on benches & watching the people of Vancouver walk by. Watched an awesome fireworks display by a UK group & V went back 2 days later to watch the Canadian group fire their works which she said was even more impressive. I listened to & caught a wee bit of the display from my son’s apartment. The building was shaking.

They held the Gay Pride parade while we were there, and I swear, I have never seen so many colorful costumes in one place before. It was the best parade I’ve seen in decades.

On our last full day there we went on a whale watching tour & got to see several harbour seals, harbour porpoises, otters and a small pod of Orcinus orca. Best day ever! I was torn between feeling concerned for the orcas because of the intrusion & tickled I was able to see them in the wild instead of in an aquarium.

Where’s the fucking police?

That would be the Virginia where I was stationed in the Eighties that was still fighting school desegregation court cases in Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

I’m guessing the campus police have authority at UVA, not real police. I wouldn’t be surprised if the campus police at a campus in Virginia wouldn’t wade in until the beatings were over.

I am so glad I don’t live in Dixie any more. (Or Oklahoma, Dixie West.)

For years I’ve been kicking around an idea for a serial novel about the break up of the US. The idea is a constitutional convention triggered by some calamity. I just haven’t figured out what the triggering event would be. Trump has given me a few ideas but I feel like it would have to be something the size of ASOIAF to do it right

More on the anti-immigrant protesters whose ship broke down:

A spokesperson for Sea-Eye, which is among those Defend Europe has accused of “colluding” with Libyan people smugglers, said it was prepared to offer any aid needed.

Michael Buschheuer, the chairman of Sea-Eye, said: “To help a ship in distress is the duty of anyone at sea, without regard for their origin, race, religion or beliefs.”

But when his ship approached the crew of the C-Star reportedly refused help.

“Sea-Eye took on a course towards the C-Star and got in contact with the right-wing extremists but they refused any help,” a spokesperson said.

“On the instructions of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre [in Rome], the Sea-Eye continued its search for shipwrecks and drownings.”

“Baked Alaska is nothing but another conservative whinger when his rules are applied to him.”

He and his buddy seem to have forgotten that the driver owns the car she operates for Uber. That signals to me that she has the right to kick their butts out of her own vehicle. I’m not buying their claim that they said/did nothing wrong. My instincts tell me they said something racist either to her, about her, or about other POCs. We blacks have lots of experience in working with racists. On any other job other than the type she has, we ignore them because if we complain, the boss tends to think the perpetrator/perpetrators did/said nothing that we should interpret as being offensive to us, especially if the boss is another white person. In some cases, you can lose your job if you lodge a complaint alleging racism toward them because you’re viewed as a troublemaker. Although I was a high school teacher for many years, and one would think one wouldn’t have to deal with that type of sh*t in my profession, I had to put up with that sh*t.

Gotta share this, it’s a pic with an article in the Orlando Sentinel about Florida Neo-Nazis.

Remember, Florida Man, Nazis and Meth don’t mix

Nazi gang members arrested after raid on Florida trailer nets meth, guns, veterans’ ID cards, more: report

Authorities found an exhaustive list of weapons, drug paraphernalia and Nazi propaganda when they raided a trailer Tuesday morning in a rural pocket of west central Florida, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

More at the link, but the picture really does warn about the dangers of being Florida Man and mixing that with Naziism and meth.

“I bet most of them don’t have chins.”

It’s interesting that you mentioned that. I read an article at Raw Story a few hours ago about how white supremacists are telling their supporters that they’re too fat. Andrew Anglin weighed in, agreed that white supremacists are overweight, and gave the males tips about dressing. The new tactic seems to be to present a more “professional” appearance. I also noted that they want the males to appear “hot” so they can attract a huge following of females who will hang onto their every word and believe their white supremacist BS. Anglin went a step further and posted a pic of himself illustrating how to wear an untucked shirt. This is the biggest bunch of BS I’ve read in a loooong time. Why change one’s appearance while knowing that once one opens one’s mouth and the ugliness of one’s beliefs come out most people will be offended by it?

I’m black, and they don’t have to worry about me wanting to “replace” them. I do not envy them, and they have nothing I want. And besides, I have better things to do with my time than to attend gatherings based on hating others for things over which they have little/no control/choice. What they need to learn to do is mind their own d*mn business. They’re in Charlottesville, itching for a fight. If those who oppose them don’t show up, it will serve them right. It will send a message to them that they’re not as important as they think they are. Of course, if no opponents show up tomorrow, they’ll claim their efforts at showing their *sses to the world were successful. Poor, delusional tools.

I certainly wouldn’t want to trade the minor discrimination I get over being an atheist or Polish over that received by people-of-colour (I don’t really like that phrase having heard it during Jim Crow days, but I don’t know a better one) in a Nebraska minute (our minute will lolligag around for longer than a New York one).

I see no reason not to respect all persons equally, unless a particular person shows he or she does not deserve my respect.

(The lessons of racism were shown to me quite early when I was a child living on a Maryland Navy base by my mother versus a white Georgia woman who lived across the street from us, and an African-American family that lived next to us, all with children. Somewhat of a long story, but interesting: All of the children were friends, but the way the Georgia woman approached issues between the children and the way the African-American family and my mother did stuck with me my whole life.)

Not much different from the days of the Civil Rigths Movement either. Cops wade in, beat those standing up for rights.

I understand how slavery and Jim Crow shaped the country and its people. I don’t understand why this is still a vexing problem today (hence my childhood story from the Sixties I just posted).

It’s been fifty bloody years since I was a child. The outward signs of racism might be gone (no more “whites only” water fountains and such), but the attitudes are still the same a couple generations later.

re: #53 Brian J.

I can vouch for CA-34 because I live in The district. In the primary there were three Berniebots and 1 Green. All of them were slamming Jimmy. Only made me more determined to get people out to vote for Jimmy. OR endorsed Jimmy at the last minute and that was only after the LA Times did some investigating and found out that Jimmy’s opponent in the Runoff was running as a GOP stealth candidate.
