The feel-good story of the day…Richard Spencer Wanted To Have A Press Conference In DC, But Hotels Kept Canceling On Him

Following violent clashes at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend, white nationalist Richard Spencer tried to hold a private press conference in Washington on Monday. But two different hotels in DC canceled on him before the events were scheduled to start.

In the end, Spencer, a leader of the alt-right movement, had to hold the press conference in an apartment he calls an office and part-time residence across the river in Alexandria, Virginia.

I’m beginning to feel something has changed.

This self inflicted debacle is demonstrably wrong. He hassles Obama and Hillary about not using the magical anti-terror words. Hits the myth he tells it like it is. He bowed to pressure to make another statement, which hits the myth he is beholden to no one. He sounded petulant and whiney which hits the myth he is a strong leader.

While none of these things are new in the hypocritical world of the Orange Supremacist, what’s new is the cause. As we’ve seen even Nazis are only willing to admit it in a crowd so for a lot of them they are not going to go on TV sticking up for him. The GOP aren’t going to because they’ll look like Nazis so they’ll hang him out. In fact they’ll go all of “we hate the racists” to try and rec!aim their reputations. Nobody who isn’t a racist fuck stick is going to stick up for him.

The end result is that the only people who are going to publicly stand up for him and reinforce the image are real actual Nazis. At best his paid TV fluffers will try, but their reputation is in the shitter anyway.

I’m quite interested in the idea of framing a message correctly. What he has done is masterfully stupid. He has framed this situation as permission for anyone to attack him on it with impudence. And every single time he fights it he bakes in the idea that he is a racist.

So … he’ll lash out. Someone is getting fired, and there are no good options for him. I’m genuinely interested to see what he’ll do. And then who will quit on him in protest. For instance:
He fires Bannon & Miller quits (or vice versa)?
He fires Kelly & McMaster quits (or v.v.)?
When do Mattis & Tea for the Tillerson jump ship?
He tries to fire McConnell, who quietly points out he can’t.
Best of all: Mueller’s Grand Jury says screw it, we’ve got enough already, thus provoking a massive stroke and, oh, President Pence. Well, Rosy Scenario might be off duty.

This was a generic statue of a Confederate soldier and was inscribed “Confederate States of America.” It was put up in 1924. As with many of these monuments, this was during the period when Jim Crow was tightening its grip on southern society.

Hope they’re careful when pulling down these generic statues. Per Confederate in the Attic, most of them were made by a Yankee casting company that, at least once, screwed up an order and shipped a recognizable Union soldier. (A MA unit, IIRC.) It was mounted in the town square anyway.

I’m fine gathering all these statues and putting them into Arlington along with a sign - these fuckers are the ones that started the Civil War over defending their right to maintain the institution of slavery. It was enshrined in their articles of secession and it was central to their entire worldview.

The argument of states’ rights was to further protect rights to keep slaves.

Everyone else isn’t. It’s now baked in that Trump is at least a soft supporter of white supremacists. If you’re already opposed to Trump, you’re even more opposed now.

The best Trump can hope for is that his base numbers stay even. Everything else has gone to hell by his own arrogance and vanity.

Back from a day registering young voters and attending a routine meeting of AL Dems. I have changed my vote for tomorrow’s primary to fill Jefferson Beauregard’s senate seat. As tempting as it is to help send GOP nutcase Roy Moore up to bedevil the shit out of McConnell, we have a decent Democratic long-long-long shot.

Our best man is a former Bombingham prosecutor who finally successfully convicted two of the Cahaba Valley Boys. That’s the perverted Klan fucks that killed the four kids at the 16th Street church.

I do feel sad that there are so many young men supporting trump and white racist ideas. Why is racism continuing to yet another generation? I can only assume it’s been taught at their mother’s/father’s knee - and I find it sad. This isn’t something that will go when the older generation dies out - it seems to be never ending.

I understand the impulse, but… I’d rather it be transferred to a museum. With an honest explanatory plaque.

As an artist, I understand what you are saying.

As an American that is getting pissed off, the statue is really still doing what it was intended, albeit in a different manner now. It is making a statement. Maybe more than it has in years.

Who knows, even the artist that created it might agree if he were around.

And as an Ohioan, here is a substitute statue of a gentleman born not too far away from Columbus.

Let’s be clear about our society, in 2017.

The Facebook group “Flat Earthers in Christ” has 25,032 Members.

Their group statement:

Our mission is to build one another up in Spirit and in Truth about the Flat Earth and its significance to what the Bible says and what is going on in world events.

This is your society.

This could be the civil war the right have long been threatening. The thing is they’re not the romanticised rebel in this story rising up to take their freedoms back. The majority of the country who are good honest people are turning out to be the real American patriots rebelling against them. Every statue pulled down is taking the country back.

The militia types always had their hero fantasies. In this story they ain’t the hero.

That it’s not in his office also suggests he doesn’t take any of this seriously.

There will be more. And Trump will be pissed, call them all losers and be seen for the total asshole he really is by the business world.

Come on council members, you really want to help America, tell Trump you cannot support him in any way and tell everyone he is actually hurting business as he makes America an international embarrassment.

As others are hinting, Trump is getting pounded. The last two weeks have been bad, and this one is shaping up to look worse for him.

He can be tipped over like that statue. Keep tugging everyone.

Not for ever, though, and I still have faith that the end result will be impeachment and maybe prison.
I wouldn’t have bet a plug nickel on prison just a few days ago - but the people who avoid prison are the ones with influential friends and allies, and trump is burning every bridge he has and then shitting on the ashes.

re: #78 Decatur Deb

Hope they’re careful when pulling down these generic statues. Per Confederate in the Attic, most of them were made by a Yankee casting company that, at least once, screwed up an order and shipped a recognizable Union soldier. (A MA unit, IIRC.) It was mounted in the town square anyway.

I recall reading once that enterprising foundries in the late XIX would set up a “standard” soldier figure (both sides tended to wear similar uniforms), and vary the head (a separate casting) for the potential market. Slouch hat and beard = Johnny Reb; forage cap and mustache = Billy Yank. Weld on the proper military bling, and done. It kept the prices down so that virtually any small town, North or South, could afford one for their Civil War monument.
And by the way Johnny in Durham crumpled, I’m guessing he wasn’t the “deluxe” model….
