Justice Dept. Confirms: Trump Lied When He Accused Obama of “Wiretapping” Trump Tower

The man in the Oval Office is an egomaniacal smear machine with no brakes
Politics • Views: 30,927

Amazingly, there still seem to be some people at the Justice Department who won’t blindly follow along with Trump’s crazed attacks on President Obama: Justice Dept: No evidence of Trump Tower wiretapping.

The Justice Department confirmed in a court briefing filed late Friday that neither it nor the FBI has evidence that Trump Tower was the target of surveillance efforts by the Obama administration during the 2016 presidential election.

[…]

The motion confirms that neither the FBI nor the Justice Department’s National Security Division have records documenting wiretaps as alleged by President Trump in a series of tweets earlier this year.

In March, Trump wrote on Twitter that he had he discovered that former President Barack Obama had Trump Tower wiretapped during the runup to the November election, which he called “McCarthyism.”

For reference, here’s the tweet in which Trump falsely accused Obama of a major crime, an accusation that was promptly seized upon and promoted by the entire right wing media noise machine:

Slinging around groundless charges of wire-tapping is indeed McCarthy-esque.

But the worse aspect is this “man” is the same person he has been for 70+ years. He has been all about TRUMP and there is nothing else. Nothing else. There is no room for people in TRUMP. Period.

And yet, with all the facts of all those years of Trump being one of the biggest and most arrogant assholes walking this earth, the media wants to find normalcy.

He’s got none. He is not normal in any manner that is also considered a worthwhile human trait. None.

And much of the coverage of him by the media is not normal because they seem to have some need to not ever really get down to the actual criticisms of Trump that are warranted.

Trump is challenging every single thing about…well everything. Are we really going to let him redefine so much?

I remain convinced that media ownership will not permit proper reporting on tr*mp because tr*mp is just the tertiary syphilis of US politics. Once you start asking how did this happen, the answers will inevitably lead back to deeply corrupt plutocrats owning the media, owning 100% of the Republican party and owning too much of the Democratic party.

Pretty interesting analysis, based on credit scores and buying history of defaulters.

House flippers triggered the US housing market crash, not poor subprime borrowers

The grim tale of America’s “subprime mortgage crisis” delivers one of those stinging moral slaps that Americans seem to favor in their histories. Poor people were reckless and stupid, banks got greedy. Layer in some Wall Street dark arts, and there you have it: a global financial crisis.
Dark arts notwithstanding, that’s not what really happened, though.
Mounting evidence suggests that the notion that the 2007 crash happened because people with shoddy credit borrowed to buy houses they couldn’t afford is just plain wrong. The latest comes in a new NBER working paper arguing that it was wealthy or middle-class house-flipping speculators who blew up the bubble to cataclysmic proportions, and then wrecked local housing markets when they defaulted en masse.

This makes a LOT of sense; a classic speculation bubble, with the inevitable collapse.

Blaming the poor subprime borrowers was always a giant load of bullshit. Borrowers overextending themselves for house flipping is much closer to the mark. But I still think primary responsibility is on the banks that originated the bad mortgages (i.e., liar loans) and the bubble that formed in trading of mortgage-backed securities, credit default swaps etc.

There were a lot of moving parts to that collapse and I’m not sure you can place all the blame on one segment alone. There were a lot of brokers promoting the idea of zero down loans, but really what those were two loans - a traditional mortgage covering 75-80% of the price, and a second which was either a HELOC that they emptied out to pay the balance or a short term mortgage with a balloon payment at five years (which they sold to borrowers by promising they could refinance in a couple years because real estate always goes up).

Those short term balloon payment loans are often what flippers use(d) because they never intend to own the property that long. But when lending standards were loosened, brokers gave those out like joints at a concert

The price increases that led to the bubble and collapse, however, were probably driven by flippers. Buying a house for 200k, putting 10k in and then selling for 240k would obviously do that. Enough action like that in the market drives up comps which means you can list at a higher price each time, even if you’re not a flipper. Then factor in a growing population with relatively low housing starts, you get a perfect storm.

Why can’t it be “blame the greedy banks AND the greedy speculators” instead? I read it as the banks ignoring the consequences of a speculative bubble and obviously doing this out of greed. Later, of course, they compounded the problem by flipping the bad debt themselves. You’re right that they essentially got away with it.

This is admittedly a matter of interpretation.

But discussing speculation as a factor in the 2008 crash without once noting the banks’ role in fueling and profiting from that speculation is a remarkable omission.

Especially since it is part of the job of the financial sector to prevent destabilizing speculative asset bubbles from forming if possible.

The article is not an overall analysis of responsibility for the crisis, but a focused defense of one targeted group, the poor subprime borrowers who are universally assigned a sizable share of the blame. The banks’ role in this is obvious enough; they made the loans after all. They also failed in their fiduciary responsibility to recognize a speculative bubble. This is important because the common claim in GOP America is that banks were pressured to make worthless loans to “just anybody,” in the interest of political correctness. This is not the truth at all. They would have raised hell about it at the time if it were. Instead, they gleefully joined in the speculative frenzy.

I suspect that the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act had a lot to do with the banks’ failure to recognize a speculative bubble. They became speculators themselves, rather than the watchdogs against it.

At my lunch break, the swallows’ nest was down to one who hadn’t flown yet. I thought, with two adults feeding it, it would get fat before it could fly, but they are all out now. I don’t know whether they come back to the nest at night, and I’m not hanging around to find out, but I’ll look around tomorrow to see whether they’re feeding over the street, as the parents have been for weeks. The kids are lighter brown and smaller, so I should be able to spot them.

Pretty interesting analysis, based on credit scores and buying history of defaulters.

House flippers triggered the US housing market crash, not poor subprime borrowers

This makes a LOT of sense; a classic speculation bubble, with the inevitable collapse.

This is the very same problem China faces now: speculative real estate investing.

The media dutifully regurgitates every last utterance, without the slightest bit of situational awareness. Do none of the reporters know to ask a followup or to engage anyone in the WH about all the nonstop lies?

Really? Trump’s budget calls for cuts to FEMA and USCG. Significant cuts, that would mean fewer Guardsmen to do the very rescues that Trump says were so good/important/critical.

He doesn’t even know what the hell he’s talking about or doing. That’s all he does.

re: #80 Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines

There was a confluence of factors: bank deregulation, greedy investment advisers and mortgage brokers, sloppy bank accounting practices, unsophisticated borrowers, unscrupulous and overly optimistic investors, a booming RE market, the whole flipping movement, and more.

But the borrowers were not forcing anyone to lend them money. Quite the opposite. The mortgage guys were seducing people with easy money, which the investment guys made worse by creating lucrative financial instruments based on those sketchy loans.

The USCG is required to head into fierce winds, and they have the equipment and the training for it. No one expects the media to risk life and limb to cover a severe hurricane, yet surprisingly, many do. I saw plenty of YouTube videos of reporters standing hip-deep in water, mic in hand, dealing with driving rain, and others where reporters were rescuing people and handing out supplies.

Trump can take a long walk off a short pier.

re: #69 EPR-radar

I read the article. It was basically don’t blame the poor borrowers and greedy banks. Instead blame the not so poor borrowers that were speculating.

Looks like a free pass to the banks to me.

As for where I’m coming from, I’m a severe bank critic that thinks the banks got away with murder in the last crash, and will do so again in the inevitable next crash.

You definitely shouldn’t blame poor borrowers, because sub-prime loans defaulted at a lower rate than non-subprime loans at every point during the crisis. The greed of the banks wasn’t in loaning to people with poor credit but in bundling all their loans together into speculative derivatives that collapsed as the market did.

SK’s article is right, it was flippers that caused the crash and it’s wrong to lump them in with the average poor buyer just trying to put a roof over their heads. Yes the banks were often giving second, their, etc loans to flippers using the same lax criteria, but again, sub-primes on average defaulted at a lower rate so they logically couldn’t have been the driving force behind the crash.

138
Charles Johnson  Sep 2, 2017 • 5:39:21pm

My Twitter fight last night about the New York Times claim that Trump’s iPhone “has no web browser” really left a bad taste in my mind.

It’s a stupid claim. If that’s what Trump’s people told the NYT writers, they were lying. If the writers misinterpreted some other claim this way, they’re idiots.

Yes, I’m well aware of Apple’s MDM system that lets an admin restrict access to apps, but even that does NOT remove the Safari web browser from an iPhone. It just conceals it. And since Trump is very obviously using the Twitter app on his iPhone, he doesn’t need it anyway — all he has to do is tap on a link and it will open in the Twitter app’s built-in webkit-based browser.

It really irritates me that some journalists think they understand these issues and feel free to insult and degrade people who point out they don’t. This is one reason why I continue to have big problems with US media in general, this “circling the wagons” approach to criticism. Way too many of these people are over-privileged, over-paid egotistical assholes who try to crush anyone who criticizes them.

Didn’t Dinesh suggest reporting Soros to the Israeli authorities as a Nazi war criminal? I think he should go to Israel and try it. You can be prosecuted for making a false or frivolous report to law enforcement in Israel, just as you can be here. Maybe he can add an Israeli conviction to his US one.

final paragraph:

Kenya is not the only developing country election where Cambridge Analytica is now getting involved. Bloomberg News reported that the company is also conducting initial research in Mexico, in advance of that country’s presidential election in 2018.

Speculation: Putin’s cyberwarfare initiative seems to have many players.
